I got this book a few weeks ago. I read it in 30 minutes, which was easy because the type is big and there is a lot of space between the paragraphs and more importantly, there is almost nothing to be learned from this book if you have read any other book on marketing... ever.
So I put it down and went back to Amazon to see if I had misread the ratings the book had. I could not understand why 11 people would give it 5 stars. I shop Amazon specifically because of the rating system and I wanted to know how 11 people could possibly have given this thing more than 2 stars at most. Not only is it sophomoric, it seems nobody cared about its publication either; there are typos and missing words all over. Now here is the interesting part: 10 of the reviewers who gave it 5 stars did so in a 6 day period in Sept 2008 right after the publication date. After that there is a 3 star review from someone who actually addressed the contents of the book and then one more review after that. And if you look closely, only that one 3-star review actually addresses the contents of the book, the others all say almost the same thing - please read them closely - every single one of them could have been written off the book jacket. So what we have here is a book that teaches nothing, that is being promoted in Guerrilla fashion by his friends who all gave it 5 star reviews in the first week the book shipped. Out of curiosity, I quickly looked at what other books the first 3 reviewers had reviewed, and saw that all 3 had only reviewed this one book except that #3 had also given 5 stars to a book by reviewer #1.
If the book was any good I would say who cares, but it is not a 5 star book. Luckily I was able to return my book, because even an orchestrated effort like this to fool us Amazon shoppers into BUYING the book cannot stop us from returning it.

I just want to say this book is great. I had been hearing about Guerrilla marketing for some time, but I didn't know how or if it actually worked. The authors do a good job of introducing crusty old-school marketers like myself to the down-and-dirty techniques of Guerrilla Marketing. I was espically fond of the coverage given to on-line and social media.

This book sadly doesn't live up to the hype. It reads as an advertisement for the services of the authors and even uses one of the authors as a case study.
The authors use every old marketing trick in the book to try to sell in the new internet world. Truly long online sales letters and one page websites that try to gather user data are not revolutionary and are a true turn off to lots of folks.
It is rare that I return a book but this one is going back.

Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0: 1,001 Unconventional Tips, Tricks and Tactics for Landing Your Dream Job Review

Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0: 1,001 Unconventional Tips, Tricks and Tactics for Landing Your Dream Job
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First review: March 13, 2010
Now, April 13, 2011, 13 months later...
If you are serious about finding a new career opportunity, this book is required reading. Don't do another thing at all in your job search until you have this book in your hands and read it. It is better that you do nothing at all than to do something without David Perry's guidance, coaching, wisdom and insight.
Do you want a larger paycheck sooner rather than later? If so, invest in yourself. Buy this book. Not buying it will probably cost you thousands of dollars. Buying it will cost you about $[...] (with shipping). If you had the opportunity to buy David Perry a Starbucks, sit down with him for 3 hours and pick his brain, I bet you would do it. That is what you are doing here...having a virtual cup of coffee with the best in the business in job hunting. But it gets even better...with his book you have all of the notes from that meeting, in writing, to review and use over and over again.
Now, with that having been said, I am sitting here at my desk eagerly downloading my preview copy of Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0. WHY?
I am a "headhunter." I do not call myself a recruiter. I do not call myself an "executive search" consultant. I PLACE PEOPLE into COMPANIES. I help companies "hire to win." I am 100% commissioned in what I do. If I do NOT place my candidate into an open position, I don't get paid. I don't eat! I am in the JOB HUNT BATTLE EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE!
Thus, what I do MUST WORK! All too many job hunting books are written by HR professionals and career counselors who will get their salary or get their "career counseling consulting fee" regardless of whether you get hired or not.
SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH GUERRILLA 3.0?? In one word, "EVERYTHING"!
I started my "headhunting" business in 2003. I was very good at it. In 2005, I saw Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters in the book store. I read the bio and learned that David Perry is a "recruiter" so I figured I would buy a copy and peruse it. After just a few pages, I was highlighting, paper clipping, taking notes and devouring the book. The very next day I was in the office reshaping the way I did business.
*I learned how to write powerful cover letters and send them to my clients on my candidate's behalf
*I honed my voice mail scripts
*I started role playing mock interviews with the candidates I presented
*...and the list could go on...
The main point is I learned how to truly differentiate myself as a recruiter. I learned how to be a "guerrilla" and that is when I can say I went from being a recruiter to being a "headhunter." More importantly, I learned how to powerfully differentiate the candidates I represented so THAT THEY WOULD GET HIRED!!! And they did. I was a top 200 recruiter in the MRI Network out of over 8000 recruiters for 3 years in a row. GUERRILLA WORKS for getting hired.
In 2009, I started building my firm and started hiring people to work for me. The first book I went to buy for training my new people was Guerrilla and to my dismay, it was "out of print." I panicked. But with a few clicks, I quickly discovered that, in just another few weeks, Guerrilla 2.0 was coming out. I pre-ordered 7 copies.
When the book landed in my office, we all did a deep dive. That year our entire recruiting firm, with rookies, billed close to a million dollars by PLACING PEOPLE.
So you can see why I can't wait to read 3.0.
David teaches you HOW TO PLACE YOURSELF...HOW TO RISE ABOVE YOUR COMPETITION AND WIN THE JOB YOU WANT instead of letting it go to someone else.
If you get 3.0 and don't get anything from it, I want to know why. Shoot me an email at [...]
Yes, his methods are different. Yes, they can be scary. Yes, you initially will be nervous using them. Guess what!? I have made money using them and you will too....HOW? You will get hired and get your paycheck!!
And here is the best part...he tells you exactly what to do. You aren't left guessing. So unless you are retired or planning on retiring this year, you need this book. Whether you are an introvert, extrovert, salesperson, engineer, manager, accountant, lawyer or just graduating from college, this publication is required reading.

Marketing in the Moment: The Practical Guide to Using Web 3.0 Marketing to Reach Your Customers First Review

Marketing in the Moment: The Practical Guide to Using Web 3.0 Marketing to Reach Your Customers First
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found reading this book like sipping a frothy latte, enjoyable but light and when it's gone, it's gone. I picked up some tips, but I found this book much more oriented towards speculative strategic thinking than practical tactics.
The book's core argument, that we're moving away from "open" web platforms that don't have much privacy or filtering, towards "closed" ones, was a useful insight for me. I don't disagree with his core premise about user behavior. But I roll my eyes when social media marketing is presented as other than labor-intensive and thus costly. The argument that just because you can use Facebook to market your business for free does not make marketing on Facebook free. The author, like many social media writers, kind of ignores the time-intensity of using guerilla tactics in social media.
Some web users barely use a search engine at all, which is the "open" web. They may spend all their time on closed platforms such as virtual reality games, Facebook, and especially platforms that work well with little mobile devices. It's a shift in user habits that is very real and it means that your future customers are going to find you inside those closed platforms, not by using the search engines. I was really impressed by the thinking on this and I think he's right about it.
That said, in the chapters of the book that cover specific types of platforms the author enthuses too much about what's great about the platform but doesn't adequately (in my opinion) address the costs of entering these new advertising and engagement media. Like many social media enthusiasts he seems to feel we should just jump into all of it with both feet. The problem is the labor-intensity of learning to adapt and the grunt work of building presences within these new platforms. Obviously we're going to have to choose a few and ignore the rest, but the author's enthusiasm for all the new platforms means that if you follow his advice you'll be buried up to your neck in new websites to join and explore.
The author addresses our concerns at the start: that social media marketing can be a big time and resource waster. He promises that he'll show us ways to always come out ahead and get maximum bang for our buck. I didn't feel he made good on the promise though.
While the book offers a lot of practical tips, the author is most interested in internet trends towards what he calls Web 3.0. He's speculating as to which media channels may get big and important. In his enthusiasm for all the new toys, I found his arguments for using these new tools became ungrounded. While the book does contain some practical advice for using things like Twitter and texting, it also ventures into areas of marketing in the new media, such as virtual reality worlds, where you would have to have staff investing tremendous amounts of time learning the platforms and networking within them.
The author's inspirations are billion-dollar companies like Zappos. These businesses have the resources to put full-time staff on projects like building a presence in "Second Life" and the 20-odd other virtual reality sites he reals off as worth investigating. I'm happy for the author that he gets to mastermind massive campaigns in these new media and direct his scores of virtual employees, but as a practical matter I found many of the tactics suggested in the book pretty impractical for a business without deep pockets.
I found a few tips I could use. The book is nicely designed and the author has a breezy prose voice. While reading I was excited about some of the methods described so I signed-up for a SecondLife account to check it out. I encountered an environment that clearly has a massive learning curve. If you had an employee or two on staff who already enjoyed virtual reality worlds, they'd learn faster I suppose - but as a solo-preneur and marketing consultant, I'm just too busy with everything I'm already doing to invest my time learning platforms that basically amount to playing with virtual paper dolls

In the words of the author in the Preface, "this text was written primarily for use by undergraduate and postgraduate students, taking nonprofit marketing as an optional part of their studies". This textbook was developed as a bridge between the theory in the classroom and practicality in the real world. The text is divided into three parts: part one explains the concepts of marketing and the frameworks that are relevant to nonprofits organizations in all fields; part two explains how to develop a marketing orientation; and part three demonstrates how marketing applications can be applied to specific fields such as fundraising, the arts, educational institutions and healthcare fields. Numerous case studies illustrate marketing concepts. Each chapter begins with an objective and ends with a summary, discussion questions and extensive references.

This book was intended primarily for higher education students. However, it is an excellent primer for professionals, who might be novitiates of marketing concepts, but who are seeking to incorporate marketing principles into their organizations' strategic plans. The first section presents a broad overview of the nonprofit sector as well as defining marketing and how marketing concepts can benefit the nonprofit sector. Sargeant stresses the need for nonprofits to shift their view of marketing from circumstances based management strategy to marketing as a philosophy incorporated into the management structure. Achieving a customer focus, both internal (staff) and external (customers, donors, governing bodies, etc.) is also emphasized. These marketing concepts support the fundamentals of the planning process outlined by Stueart and Moran.

Part three, Specific Applications to fundraising, arts, education, healthcare or social marketing is most beneficial to a novice. In this section, Sargeant walks the newcomers through the steps necessary to achieve an effective marketing strategy for their specific type of nonprofit organization.

I feel this book is an excellent recommendation for the professional seeking to develop an in-house marketing philosophy or to have an understanding of the marketing process before hiring an outside marketing professional.

RIP OFF.
There is no value contained in the book. It is literally an about-us page from every company's website as each note is but a mere page long.
There are no case studies or analysis of any kind. It's not about what the companies did right or not, it's an advert for these companies and Matt Haig's affiliates/people who produced better books years ago.
Don't buy it. Don't read it.
