Middle-Class Lifeboat: Careers and Life Choices for Navigating a Changing Economy Review

Middle-Class Lifeboat: Careers and Life Choices for Navigating a Changing Economy
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I'm extremely worried about my career in this economy. (I'm a Hair Salon Owner and a Stylist) I've been doing this for a long time and I love it. But we have been hit by this economy so hard that I thought I would get this book to prepare for hard times. Get a 2nd job. Most of the Careers listed aren't safe or feasable. I have a Massage Therapist working for me and also network with 5 others and they are taking 2nd and 3rd jobs to even bring home any money. This is a luxury for people right now. Mobile services! Again, most people can't afford a Personal Shopper; an Errand Service. Cleaning Services are being cut back when it is something you can do yourself. A few years ago, these were good, (just good) suggestions. Times have changed and people are looking for real ways to survive. I think they needed to update the information and really think about people that are living pay check to pay check. Most of these people are who we'd be marketing to. If they are living pay check to pay check then a massage, a haircut, personal shoppers, errand services, personal chefs, cleaning services, interior decorating, etc. will not be their sweet spot. They are going to buy the necessities and that is about it. I would do your own research, because this info is too old to deal with these economic conditions.

Fashion Unraveled - Second Edition: How to Start and Manage Your Own Fashion (or Craft) Design Business Review

Fashion Unraveled - Second Edition: How to Start and Manage Your Own Fashion (or Craft) Design Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved the practical, down-to-earth attitude of the book. Many guides for first-time business owners seem to emphasize the excitement and ease of being your own boss. Fashion Unraveled makes no such claims--it lets you know that you are definitely capable of starting your own successful business but it's going to take time and a tremendous amount of effort. You shouldn't expect your business to turn a profit until the third year of operation, but if you have a desirable product and know how to sell and market it, you will eventually be able to live off the income from your business. I think this book could definitely be used by people who choose fashion design as a hobby rather than a fulltime career (for example, I've met a few women who design purses or t-shirts, but don't intend to launch their own line or open their own store), but it's mainly aimed at those who would prefer to work for themselves one day.
Fashion Unraveled is also very user-friendly. It explains some complicated business concepts in a very straightforward manner, and it keeps its information clear and understandable without ever talking down to the reader. As the preface states, the whole layout of the book is designed with creative people in mind--almost every page contains lined space to jot down notes and ideas, and the Case Study examples at the end of every chapter shows the entire development phase of one woman's fashion design business, accompanied by identical pages for the reader to fill in with their own market research, mission statements, business model, etc. The case study and the various interviews listed in the Designer Profiles were very inspiring--here are real people who are making a living in the industry!
This 2nd edition of the book presents extremely current information about the fashion industry, and takes into account the recent economic downturn and the explosion of new media like Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. The author lists dozens of internet resources that designers can use to find trade show listings, distribute press releases, connect to indie fashion communities and more. A contemporary businessperson must know their competition, cultivate their online presence, and be constantly ready to network, follow up, and promote their clothing line. The advice is perfectly geared toward today's audience and is coming from an author who has extensive hands-on experience in fashion design, business, and teaching.
I must say, I am not a fashion maven. This is not my field, and yet I was absolutely riveted by this book. The parts I was most moved by were the discussions of eco-friendly practices in the fashion business. I visited some of the sites mentioned and as a result, I've developed a strong interest in upcycled and recycled clothing and sustainable fashion. It's like discovering a whole different world, where instead of contributing to a disposable culture, fashion can be turned in the opposite direction and used to help people be more aware of their impact on the environment.
Fashion Unraveled is basically an entire college course in one book. Whether you're a newbie to the world of fashion like myself, a serious-minded designer or crafter ready to become an entrepreneur, or just a fan of Project Runway and the fashion world in general, you'll find this book informative, inspiring, and tailored for your keeper shelf.

First of all, its hard to believe that this book costs $20 - there's not enough information here to justify the price tag. Alright, this book was just released so the price might change within some time and what won't change is this...
Plenty of it is common sense, unfortunately. If you use your head, some of this stuff should not be new to you. Yes, there are online resources mentioned throughout the book, but the only new one to me is JibberJobber.
Maybe its good for beginners, but its not very useful if you ever went through an online search before.

When it comes to marketing online, content is an afterthought for far too many marketers. It's a pity because, as Wendy Montes de Oca points out in her new book, content can be a huge source of income for any business. That's why I love that Wendy has comprehensively explained dozens of ways to leverage content for an online business. The best part is that, like the pro direct marketer she is, Wendy's strategies are all trackable and quantifiable. So you know exactly how valuable your efforts are to your business

Branding Yourself: How to Use Social Media to Invent or Reinvent Yourself (Que Biz-Tech) Review

Branding Yourself: How to Use Social Media to Invent or Reinvent Yourself (Que Biz-Tech)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I loved it. The title was good, but I thought it would have been better if "self promotion" had been included in it somewhere. Quite a while ago, back in 1997, I purchased and read 101 Ways To Promote Yourself: Tricks Of The Trade For Taking Charge Of Your Own Success which was all about self promotion and devoted just one chapter of 101 chapters to the Internet. I still love that book since so much of the theory behind it is still applicable today. However, the way to do things now is on the Internet, not through the print media and snail mail. That's where the instant book being reviewed comes in.
Branding yourself is a neat book. It is written by two guys who decided they wanted to get better known, better thought of, and develop connections or relationships with people so they would not get pidgeon holed in one opportunity and be stuck there since they don't know all that many people. While it is great to brand yourself so you have something to promote, personally I am turned off by the term "branding." I like to think more in terms of focusing on something so you can ultimately be considered an expert or authority on what you do. Yes, this is branding, but it's also a strategy regarding how to go about making something successful whether it be a person, a business, or something else that can be marketed to make money.
The focus of this book is to help someone better promote THEMSELVES. However, most of what is discussed here is equally applicable to promoting a professional services firm or other similar small business. And much of what is discussed here can be adapted so the marketer of any small business can grow his or her company very well on a limited budget.
Probably the main reason I liked this book so much was the approach the authors took to present social media marketing to the reader. Social media marketing has been around for a while now, and if a book simply lists tools and techniques the social media marketer can use, then I don't rate such a book very highly when I review it these days. But when the book feels more like a case study as this one does, it is novel and definitely worth a read. Maybe in a few years it won't be considered such hot stuff, but today it's a pretty good book.
The only downer I'll include in this review is that I would have liked the book better if Chapter 6 on Facebook had been left out. I'm not a fan of Facebook. I think it is overrated as a marketing tool, and I don't think it really ads that much to a marketing effort. But it is a popular Web site and I suppose to leave it out of the discussion when talking about building an Internet Presence would be bad.
So if you want to promote yourself so you might find or get a better job, then this book is for you. If you are a professional services firm (solo practice), then this book is for you. If you are a small business owner and want to read a case study regarding marketing on the Internet, then this book is for you. Don't let the book's title scare you from reading it. It's about self promotion, but also about Internet Marketing in general. It's about how to use today's Internet resources to attract job opportunities and new business. 5 stars!

I was fortunate enough to be among the first to review this work prior to its release here on Amazon. My thoughts? BUY IT! Buy it now! Allow me to explain...
I have over a decade of experience conducting internet research, competitive intelligence and training Recruiters on internet research techniques inside Microsoft, Google, Siemens, MCI and a string of startup companies. As such, I have been privy to several trends, tools and tech that all Sourcers should be leveraging in their daily routine. As I read through THE SOURCERS PLAYBOOK, I realized that Geoff Peterson had discussed the most relevant tools and more profitable techniques in a clear, concise and casual manner. Furthermore, the images supported are presented so well that everyone from novice to expert can immediately "get it" and put into action.
I give The Sourcers Playbook my strongest recommendation.

90 Days to Success in Consulting Review

90 Days to Success in Consulting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a true gem. As a consultant, I am glad I came across this. The author is very insightful and the knowledge has probably accelerated my abilities by several years. This book covers everything a consultant needs, including all the things they typically flounder on. The author has impressive insights from experience that are communicated in a very understandable, refreshing style. He tells you what you need to do and why. I've read a lot of consulting books, but this one is the best from a holistic practice perspective. There are other books that focus in on certain aspects of consulting but without the foundation that this book communicates, knowing all that would be for naught. One thing I really liked was that the author does not take you strictly on his path or try to make you into someone making a million dollars a year through giving seminars or running workshops - things that few consultants could ever do to that level. Consultants make it in a variety of ways and this book helps you find your way and excel at it, whether that's on one's own as a top-notch consultant or utilizing contractors or employees, whether doing personal services, projects or providing resources.
Finally, the approach is something I feel like I could live with myself if I use. It's ethical, it's relationship building and it's strictly fair trade. While making no bones about the need to earn from the business, the author emphasizes creating client value as the means to excel and maximize the consultant's potential. Some of the best take-aways were in brand building, finances, and service development.

I Hate People: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job Review

I Hate People: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Synopsis:
Designed for navigating pitfalls and stop signs in the workplace, I HATE PEOPLE! helps you identify the top drains on your time and resources and teaches office jujitsu tactics to help wrest back your time.
Divided into four parts, the book first identifies and classifies each of The Ten Least Wanted who pose the greatest threat to getting your work done in the office. Without going into a full discussion of The Ten Least Wanted, here they are:
* Stop Sign (like the Kodak executive who predicted digital cameras had no future)
* Flimflam ("expert at identifying people to do her bidding")
* Bulldozer ("wrong decision is better than indecision")
* Smiley Face (think Batman's Joker - constantly smiling with something up his sleeve)
* Liar Liar
* Switchblade (Judas)
* Minute Man ("Do you have a minute, I just have one thing...")
* Know-It-None (full of facts, but most of which are useless or wrong)
* Spreadsheet (Obsessive micromanager)
* Sheeple (avoids making decisions)The second part of the book introduces the concept of Flying Solo. If you enjoy your work but not distractions from people around you, then your best solution would be to become a successful Soloist. As a soloist, on your best days, you are someone who works effectively with small groups and on your own. By sharing the stories and techniques of successful soloists from a broad range of industries and companies, the book develops a clear picture of how a soloist works.
The last half of the book deals with the work environment. The third section, Office Life, incorporates The Ten Least Wanted with the constraints and demands of office life, such as constant interruptions, disruptions, unreasonable expectations and demands, and excessive rules and red tape. While the last section, Spaces and Places, discusses the need to carve out your own "personal cave" - whether you work in a bull pen, a cubicle, office with a door, or occasionally from home.
Review:
The advice and strategies are interspersed with enough anecdotes from successful soloists to make I HATE PEOPLE! both helpful and interesting read. I'll spare you the comments about how I would have loved to read this while working at Big Law or any similarly predictable remarks. I do think the book's strength is that it helps identify the difficult people and situations that we absorb, acquiesce and live out on a regular basis. I look forward to trying out several of the suggested strategies, such as being more sensitive to and wary of the Switchblades around and trying a "hard stop" with my Minute Man.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who feels frustrated in the office and is looking for ways to eke out more time and autonomy.

Easily the best book about job hunting using the Internet I have found, and one of the better all around books on job-hunting, period. Unlike many other books on the subject, it is not just a list of websites, soon to be outdated. Though hundreds of websites are listed, that isn't the book's focus; instead, the authors talk about different job hunting approaches, the effectiveness of these various methods, and how the Internet can be used to increase the chances of finding a job, regardless of the approach used. In most cases, this can be a real eye-opener.
Anyone who has tried to find a job using the Net has no doubt found that it is not as simple as just posting a resume on Monster. Instead, the book tells you which job-hunting methods work best (and which ones don't), and goes on to teach you how the Internet can be used in any kind of job hunt, whether you spend most of your job-hunting time in front of a computer or not.
The authors place a heavy accent on learning how to use the Internet as a research tool; they go beyond simple search engine use, and even delve into finding the information that search engines themselves can't find. They explain why the job boards are so ineffective (evidently, only about 4% of job-hunters find employment through the job boards), and the best ways to use networking in your job hunt.
Written in an easy and often humorous style, I found the book to be extremely helpful and informative. Highly recommended.

This book is one of the few recent books that covers personal branding. I feel like this was a timely book in the fact that the importance of personal branding is growing day by day.
The first few pages of the book are riddled with strong references, including Marshall Goldsmith, Keith Ferrazzi, Tim Sanders, David Meerman Scott, and others.
I also thought that one of the main strengths of the book was that it was well structured. The author uses four distinct steps (discover, create, communicate, and maintain) as a part of personal branding.
The target audience of this book is Generation Y. Many of the examples reference college, internships, getting your first job, etc. I am glad that the book is targeting to a specific audience, but unfortunately I felt that the material was less useful to Generation X, Baby Boomers, and other generations.
That being said, the author tells an upbeat, yet pragmatic story about the importance of personal branding. It reads fairly quickly, and I'm sure almost everyone will pick up a few tips and tricks about how to improve their own unique brand.

There are three major benefits that you will gain from reading this book.
First it will serve as a motivation to all who want to give up the rut we all call a job and move out on their own.
The second benefit is really a step by step guide about how to move out on your own. Not only does Jonathan tell you how, he gives links to hundreds of resources to help you accomplish what you want.
The third valuable benefit is the wisdom that Jonathan shares from his own experiences.
The third benefit is perhaps the most valuable. Under the wisdom he shares, there are two very valuable lessons - either of them worth the price of the book.
The first lesson is how to deal with fear. Here Jonathan gives some extremely good advice. Fear is probably the number one reason most people do not achieve their dreams. His advice is to explore and quantify the fear. Ask what are the consequences of failure, what is the worst case scenario, and examine the results. Often this will put fear in perspective. Then let go of the fear. Do this only once and let go.
Then you need to explore and quantify inaction. What are the results of doing nothing? If "staying the course is going to create a miserable future", that should be an unacceptable alternative. Once you explore and quantify inaction, let go. Again do this only once. What you focus on expands. So only examine the fear and inaction once and then move on.
Then the important part is to stimulate success daily. Again, what we focus on expands. So stimulate success daily. You do this by being clear about what you want, believing you can achieve it and taking focused action.
The other huge lesson is how, when and why to involve others family/friends/mentors in your mission
The last lesson is probably the best advice in the entire book. There is no one person, guru, mentor who can give you the magic formula or set of directions that will work for you. In the final analysis, "no one can stand in your shoes. No one else can take action but you."
Take responsibility for your own life.
Ask yourself this question, "Will this career choice let me spend the greatest amount of time absorbed in the activities and relationships that make me come alive while earning the living I need to live?"
The book is well written and easy to read. If you really wish to change your life, to take charge and put your future in your own hands, this is a great place to start.
