The 7 Essential Steps to Successful eBay Marketing

I sell professionally on ebay, and when I tell people what I do for a living, many times they'll laugh or think that I'm not serious. But this book "gets" that there are lots of us out there who are serious about selling on ebay - we run legitimate businesses with real inventory, real employees, and real profit and loss - we aren't just cleaning out granny's attic for some extra cash. This resource is a true asset for people like us. It addresses some serious issues about selling on ebay and earning a living doing so. It's about so much more than what people usually consider "marketing" - it includes tangible plans for building a comprehensive small business plan and strategic planning for the future success of the business.
The tools chapter is also fantastic - they've done a really comprehensive review of all the tools available. The chapter on writing good item descriptions is also great. I've always struggled with description writing, but the authors disclose the secrets that advertising pros use to write good ads, and I'll be darned, it works great for ebay too!

I started thumbing through this at a friends house. I was just using it as a time killer as I have no aspirations of becoming a personal trainer, but after a few pages I really got taken in by the writing. The author writes in a very easy to read, conversational style. The author's personal experiences, shown in sidebars, gave me the feeling like I was talking to a friend who just happened to know a ton about personal training.
Not to say that the book isn't in depth, as it does a great job of breaking down everything you could possibly have to think about when starting a business. After reading this starting any business seems possible, not just a personal training one. It's very concise without losing the reader in the details. In fact the authors writing style kept me engrossed with the in depth details provided.
If you're thinking of starting any home based business, this book will be helpful. Let alone a home based personal training one. Hell, it made me think I could start one, and trust me, I'm nobodies idea of a personal trainer.

If you're completely clueless to running your own home-based business, this is a great beginner (hence the title "for Dummies"). I found the book to work best when you already have an idea for your business. As with similar books, it's great to have a general idea of what type of business you'd like to pursue before reading the book; it will help you better shape your idea.
The book did spend a lot of time talking about how to deal with family problems, creating a quiet workspace, setting work hours and how to get through a project when you have no desire. While some people might find this beneficial, it read like "filler" to me.
All in all, though, it's worth checking out.

Just in case anybody is on the fence about purchasing this item due to an incomplete description by Amazon go ahead and order it. I spent over a 1/2 hour on the phone with Amazon Customer Service that ended up including a three-way call to the publisher trying to figure out if this book came with the audio cd's that are required by most colleges. Needless to say the call got me nowhere. Even the Customer service rep. from the publisher was clueless on the matter. So I just ended up ordering it anyways thru amazon thinking that if it did not have the cds I would just send it back. Guess what 1 day later package arrives with cds included!

Never Get a "Real" Job: How to Dump Your Boss, Build a Business and Not Go Broke Review

Never Get a Real Job: How to Dump Your Boss, Build a Business and Not Go Broke
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book on the recommendation of Peter Shankman via his Help a Reporter e-mail blast. I read the sample, read the reviews and thought that this would be one of those "must have" books for entrepreneurs.
I plowed through the first half but grew tired of Gerber's "get tough" attitude/lecturing. Gerber is not quite bloviating but his voice is pretty close. Luckily the second half of the book is much better. It's filled with useful lists of resources that you can probably find on Google using the right search terms* -- but it's nice to have them collected in one place.
This book is probably great for someone who just graduated from college and doesn't have a job. Although, if you've got a very limited budget, I might recommend The Zen of Social Media Marketing and -- perhaps -- Smarter, Faster, Cheaper: Non-Boring, Fluff-Free Strategies for Marketing and Promoting Your Business (another Shankman recommendation) as better choices for your buck. I can't fully recommend the latter, however, until I have finished reading it, Keep your eyes posted for the review....
*I only added the remark about Google because Gerber always stresses that you shouldn't pay for something that you can find on Google for free.

Young serial entrepreneur Scott Gerber is not the product of a wealthy family or storied entrepreneurial heritage. Nor is he the outcome of a traditional business school education or a corporate executive turned entrepreneur. Rather, he is a hard-working, self-taught 26-year-old hustler, rainmaker, and bootstrapper who has survived and thrived despite never having held the proverbial "real" job.In Never Get a "Real" Job: How to Dump Your Boss, Build a Business, and Not Go Broke, Gerber challenges the social conventions behind the "real" job and empowers young people to take control of their lives and dump their nine-to-fives—or their quest to attain them.Drawing upon case studies, experiences, and observations, Scott dissects failures, shares hard-learned lessons, and presents practical, affordable, and systematic action steps to building, managing, and marketing a successful business on a shoestring budget. The proven, no-b.s. methodology presented in Never Get a "Real" Job teaches unemployed and underemployed Gen-Yers, aspiring small business owners, students, and recent college graduates how to quit 9-to-5s, become their own bosses, and achieve financial independence. Q&A with Author Scott Gerber The title of your book is 'Never Get a Real Job," but are you suggesting that there's an entrepreneur in everyone? Millennials are no longer beneficiaries of the hand-out, resume-driven society of old. Boomers and Gen Xers need to stop training Gen Y to believe that the mantra of ‘work hard, get good grades, go to school and get a job' that they were told to buy into, is alive and well. It's not - it's dead - and now it needs to be buried for good. Fact: there are over 81 million young people unemployed worldwide. And this number does not account for the tens - if not hundreds - of millions more that are underemployed. It's becoming more and more apparent that in today's world, young people will need to create a job to keep a job. Millennials need to re-train themselves to become self-sufficiency experts capable of generating their own incomes. I truly believe everyone can become entrepreneurial and partner with individuals whose strengths fill in gaps and weaknesses. The key is for us to stop thinking 'Facebook" and start thinking about practical, nuts-and-bolts, income-generating, on-the-ground businesses. When we finally turn that corner, Gen Y will truly become the most entrepreneurial generation in history. How should young entrepreneurs go about determining if their 'passion" can become a scalable business? The Hollywood-esque scene for most young entrepreneurs, where two guys are sitting at a bar, write their idea on a napkin and then proceed to build a gazillion dollar business is fiction - at least for 99.9999% of us. In truth, every entrepreneur needs to have a gut-check moment. They shouldn't simply 'believe" their idea will work as a business and get started. Rather, they need to prove it to themselves, poke holes in it, determine if it can generate real revenues - as well as how fast those revenues will start rolling in - and be able to defend their assumptions to their harshest critic. I know my detractors will mention 'revolutionary" and 'game-changing" companies such as Facebook and other Silicon Valley darlings that went on to raise millions, get acquired for billions, or go public. However, I would never advocate to young entrepreneurs, especially in our current economy, that jumping right into a business on passion alone is an advisable way to start a business. What made you want to be an entrepreneur? The thought of working for someone else gave me chills. Office politics, dress down days, cubicle life, water cooler rants, a lack of real decision making ability--they all made me want to reach for Vodka and a bottle of Xanax. If I was going to fall flat on my face or go bankrupt, it certainly wasn't going to be because I let myself end up in a position where I could be underpaid or downsized without any warning. "Real" jobs, and the quest to attain one in the first place, didn't make sense for me--and they especially don't make sense now in the new, post-recession economy. I found all the arguments that "real" jobs are stable and secure to be ludicrous. After all, how stable and secure is ANYTHING that you don't control, own or have a real say in? And with ever-growing rises in outsourcing, globalization, on and offline educational institutions, and recessions, I know I absolutely made the right decision and have absolutely no issue telling others they should do the same in order to take control of their lives and financial futures. Jobs are not going to materialize out of thin air just because politicians say they can make it happen. The only job that is remotely safe for young people in this new economy is one of their own creation and design that they own and control. However, even though we live in a world of an over abundance of collegiate institutions, enhanced automation, increased globalization, and ever-growing outsourcing options, Gen Y is still being force fed that this age-old "send out resumes to get a job" is still relevant and applicable to today--when the reality is that this notion is anything but the actual reality. Yet there hasn't been any real action. Just empty promises and words from politicians and pundits. Nor has there been any sort of helping hand to teach Gen Y about the new way forward they must learn in order to stay competitive and effective. This needs to change.

The F.A.S.T. Track Internet Marketing Method for Local Businesses: How to Attract Droves of Customers From the Internet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For anyone who runs a local business, but who hasn't ever used the internet to market that business, this book is a goldmine.
The author makes a very strong case for how important the internet is, even for local businesses, small mom-and-pop operations, etc, and more importantly, presents a very large number of different ways that the internet can be used to help a local business reach more people. The process is very systematic, but also flexible: for example, if you want to focus more on search engine marketing and less on ezine marketing as a way of getting people to your business' website, you can easily do that. The author discusses all kinds of different ways to get people to your site, and then a bunch of other ways to actually convert those visitors in to customers.
The only minor complaint I had about the book is that I wished some of the specific sections on different marketing tactics was a little longer. I don't think that this is a huge deal, because each marketing method is given several pages, and is more than enough to get you started, but if possible it would've been nice. That being said, the author discusses 14 different marketing methods, so I can understand why she wouldn't write an encyclopedia on each one.
Overall I thought that this book was great. For people like me, who run local-based businesses that don't traditionally use the internet very much, I think that this book is an absolute goldmine.

Starting Your First Business: Gain Independence and Love Your Work (American Dream Series)
Average Reviews:

Here's a business start-up book that truly "tells it like it is." Even though it's part of The American Dream Series, author Jim Sapp "gets real" right away, urging new business starter-uppers to do some heavy soul-searching and personality assessment. Following your dreams is one thing, but owning and operating your own business certainly can't be done with a dreamy attitude. Business ownership isn't for everyone, says Sapp, especially not the indecisive, pessimistic, or otherwise faint of heart. He sprinkles the book with frank "Reality Checks" and warnings about the difficulties, stress, and need for careful research, planning and resource gathering. With suggestions like forming an advisory board, using SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), and applying for SBA (Small Business Administration) loans, Sapp is all about using available resources and assistance, including his own products -- his www.sappbizz.com website offers many helpful documents and forms, including and a free Business Plan Checklist. Fully one third of the book deals with money -- raising, managing and controlling it. And that's a good way to sum up this excellent business how-to book: It's "on the money."

Average Reviews:

This book was a little better than OK, but I can't say that I particularly liked it. I'd love to rate it a 3.5 star, but I have to give it either a 4 or a 3. Well, I'll throw it a bone - voila! It gets a 4. The book has five sections and 19 chapters as follows:
I. What's new online? (1&2)
II. A new mindset (3-6)
III. Developing your 7-step action plan (7-15)
IV. Completed plan and beyond (16-19)
V. Appendix (A&B)
1. What's important to today's Web marketer?
2. Changing roles
3. Creativity and innovation
4. Think like a direct response copywriter
5. You're a publisher now!
6. Your new social media Web site
7. The 7-step action plan
8. Step 1: Niche
9. Step 2: Brand
10. Step 3: Story
11. Step 4: Search
12. Step 5: Content
13. Step 6: Tactics - Social Media
14. Step 6: Tactics - Tried and true
15. Step 7: Results
16. Putting it all together
17. Let the message work for you
18. Collaboration with colleagues and customers
19. Tracking your success
A. Bibliography
B. Worksheets
I loved Chapter 5 on being an infopreneur. But I would have liked more coverage on emailing, ebooks, webinars, and teleseminars.
The author has her own online marketing and design company called "Digital Media Works, Inc" which you can easily find by doing a Google search for that name. I was about as impressed with her company Web site as I was impressed with her book. Clearly this book is a marketing piece for her company.
It surprised me that a book on Internet Marketing only devoted one chapter (Chapter 6) to the ins and outs of designing a Web site. And it surprised me that a book on Internet Marketing that included a bibliography did not include more books (and current ones at that) on Internet Marketing. Chapter 14 covers email sigs, article marketing, online press releases, and ezines.
If you are interested in Social Media Marketing, then this book is one you may want to take a look at. It does a reasonble job discussing the subject. I was surprised there was not a chapter on blogging just after Chapter 6. I would have included a chapter on blogging there. Then at Chapter 13 I would have gone into marketing tactics used when blogging. I was surprised there was not a chapter on social networks (Linked In, MySpace, Facebook, etc.) just after Chapter 6. I would have included a chapter there on the social networking sites, and then at Chapter 13 I would have gone into the marketing tactics used when doing social networking. The Brighter Marketing Bible Review

My least favourite thing about having a business is marketing - I find it a total chore, and I'm often lost as to what i should be doing and why. The Brighter Marketing Bible makes it easy - it's step by step, specific, easy to understand and most importantly (for me) written in a very human style.
I have enjoyed reading this book far more than I expected to, and the exercises have been really useful - it's a very welcome addition to my groaning bookshelves!

Six-Week Start-Up: A Step-By-Step Program for Starting Your Business, Making Money, and Achieving Your Goals Review

Six-Week Start-Up: A Step-By-Step Program for Starting Your Business, Making Money, and Achieving Your Goals
Average Reviews:

So, can you get a business started in six weeks? I think the answer is yes, but it's going to depend on the type of business you want to start. If you're planning on starting an amusement park or oil refinery, it's going to take longer. But Abrams says in the introduction that this book is for more typical entrepreneurs who are planning to start a small business (retail or service company).
There are certainly plenty of other books on the market about starting a business (I've read many of them, and looked at many more in the bookstore), but what led me to buy this one was the week-by-week approach. Abrams starts each week with a checklist of things to get finished in that week. The first week focuses on business concept-oriented tasks (defining goals for the business, strategic position, etc.) and developing an "identity" (name, logo, etc.).
The later weeks go into things like setting up an accounting system, incorporating, finding office space, doing market research, and hiring employees.
The book has a lot of worksheets you can use to handle issues such as developing a marketing plan or personnel policies. Many of the worksheets are useful, although I wish I hadn't written in the book itself (tip: xerox the worksheets, and write on those! that way you'll have "backups" if you need to start over! Wish I had!).
So, after six weeks will I have my doors open for business? Yes--no question. But since I'm starting a consulting company and setting up a home office, I don't have huge organizational issues to worry about (like building a warehouse or something similar). And I think the premise of this book will work for most people who are starting a similar *small* business. I give it five stars, though, because even if it takes more than six weeks, the information here is solid.

Running a Side Business: How to Create a Second Income Review

Running a Side Business: How to Create a Second Income
Average Reviews:

This book provides a broad overview of things to consider when starting your own business. The title refers to beginning a "side" business, presuming that you still have another primary source of income which is perhaps why it does not seem very detailed. Since I have a business background, much of this book seemed very simplistic to me, but for the person lacking a business background who wants to start his or her own business, it does provide a good set of things that a person would need to know before getting started.
That said, if you are really serious then you will need more than this book. You may need to consult professionals in the financial or legal realm, and also do more research because what you find in this book is pretty much just the basic groundwork stuff without a whole lot of details. For example, in the section on accounting, there is a very brief explanation of a balance sheet and income statement, not enough to really provide enough information to a person who is not familiar with these concepts. If you are talking about doing a side business that remains pretty small then maybe that is okay but if you are planning on starting something that may eventually become your primary source of income, then you are going to have to get more in-depth information in pretty much all of the areas covered by this book.
For someone thinking about starting that side business, this book would be helpful. I have read other Nolo publications and in my opinion this seems to be one of the weaker ones. Most of the others have been excellent and I can't say that about this book. It's good, but like I said, very basic.
