Nginx 1 Web Server Implementation Cookbook Review

Nginx 1 Web Server Implementation Cookbook
Average Reviews:

I found very little useful information in this book. The author skims over the top with some extremely specific examples, using some rather arcane technologies in my view, with very little if any explanation of the overall picture. If you want to use this cookbook, be prepared to use the exact same ingredients as the author has chosen for you because he does not give you enough information to modify his recipe with your own ingredients.
I guess this book is written for the complete novice who wants to stay that way. The author claims to be an expert with python, yet python is mentioned only in the context of uWSGI which is not associated with an official PEP. In other parts of the book the author uses Ruby on Rails which might be a cookbook kind of technology, simple to use without knowing what you are doing -- kind of like Windows, but again not in keeping with any kind of standard.
The preface claims this book is for system administrators and web developers. I dare say most of them would be disappointed.

This is a very good book for the price. It has a lot of typos, but for the price, I can look past those. The book is very well laid out and gives some good examples, taking you through a very logical process. Some things are a bit over discussed but all in all, I would recommend this book for the novice website builder. Note: This book does not have ALL the answers and there are many things that are much more complicated in building websites than this book gets into. But if you want the basics to logically building a website from scratch, this book is a great start for the price.

The whole world wants to build web sites. This key book in the Getting StartED series takes people with no knowledge of web design and teaches them the basics the friendly, friends of ED way. Rather than setting out to be a language reference or a strict set of guidelines like so many other web design books, Getting StartED Building Websites gives readers the wider picture, including important topics such as web hosting, search engine optimization, and CSS styling alongside the basics of HTML.The chapters are divided into the most common questions, so you'll find headings like "What kind of website should I make", "What about web hosting", and "How do I write good articles". It's this broad base approach that sets it apart from most beginner books that just focus down on one small topic.

37 Days to Launch Review

37 Days to Launch
Average Reviews:

If you've ever had a business idea and wanted to pick the brain of someone who knows what they're doing, the snappy and inspiring book "37 Days to Launch" is a valuable resource. Ryan Duques, entrepreneur and force to be reckoned with, shares the passion and know-how that helped him launch more than a dozen business ventures, including a chain of community newspapers, an online education company, and even a bank.
Duques chronicles his entrepreneurial journey through funny anecdotes (selling his parents their own coffee in the morning when he was 7) and serious reflection. He explains what he learned along the way and how those lessons shaped his business development technique. Some of his ideas were successful, some weren't, but many were launched quickly and all with palpable excitement. The book focuses on a particular startup he and business partner James Warner developed and launched in 37 days: the group deal website SavingsClique.com.
The book features actual material from the SavingsClique.com brainstorming and execution process, including e-mails to designers and programmers, prospective logos he and Warner chose from, and their thought process every step of the way. Although the book revolves around launching a profitable website, the ideas and steps can apply to any goal.
This book speaks to anyone who has an idea but needs a kick in the pants to shut down the excuses and negative self-talk, stop waiting for the "perfect" time (there isn't one), quit worrying that it will take too long (done right, it doesn't have to), and get moving on systematically achieving their dreams. When you finish reading "37 Days to Launch", you'll want to sit down and set up your own plan for success.

Duques shares a glimpse inside the mind of an entrepreneur and how ones business and personal lives meld into one during the launch of a company. Duques s book explores how decisions were made, how mistakes were corrected, and, ultimately, how the business was launched. 101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site (101 Ways series) Review

101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site (101 Ways series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first picked up 101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site, I really didn't expect to find 101 different methods. After reading the book I am sure that 101 is a conservative number.
The author includes two chapters on search engine considerations, as well as chapter-length treatment of marketing in newsgroups, signature files, e-mail, discussion lists, newsletters, link trading, award recognitions, meta-indexes, online advertising, affiliate programs, cybermalls, encouraging repeat visits, press releases, e-zines, web rings, offline promotion, traffic analysis, webcasting, and launching a website. In addition, the book has five appendices, including a brief glossary and a sample implementation and maintenance schedule. The book is especially rich in providing URLs for hundreds of sites that provide additional information.
I was disappointed to find little or no treatment of two very important Web marketing strategies: search engine positioning through doorway pages and viral marketing.
Sweeney does a great job of exposing the reader to the wide variety of methods that can be used to promote a website, but for an in-depth treatment of any of these, the reader will need to consult more specialized books. 101 Ways to Promote Your Website provides an excellent introduction to Web marketing for small to medium-size businesses, and deserves the wide acceptance it has already found in the marketplace.

Great Again: Revitalizing America's Entrepreneurial Leadership Review

Great Again: Revitalizing America's Entrepreneurial Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hank Nothhaft and David Kline knock it out of the park with "Great Again," a logical, practical and enjoyable description of what's wrong with America today, and the simple prescription for fixing it. If all business books were this well-written and informative, I'd be reading a lot less fiction. Once started, I could not put it down.
"Great Again" is an inspirational read: passionate, provocative, well-paced, and informative. Nothhaft makes it very clear that the answers are not difficult, and do not require trillions of dollars in government programs, stimulus, and bureaucracy. On the surface, America's economic woes may seem very complex, but "Great Again" cuts through the clutter, extracting gems easily understood by the casual reader. Yet the reader is likely to experience some frustration as well: today's political systems of lobbying and special interests will make real progress elusive - at least until we truly are in a crisis - at which point it may be too late. It is ironic that on one hand, the conscientious CEO wants to do the right thing for America by keeping manufacturing jobs here, even in the face of lucrative tax incentives and other benefits from China and other emerging economies. Meanwhile, politicians who refuse to address corporate tax rates are the same ones threatening to penalize businesses for moving jobs off-shore, while at the same time penning job killing legislation (like Sarbanes Oxley or the more recent Dodds-Frank consumer "protection" legislation). If we can't get a government that actually helps and encourages business growth and entrepreneurship (like China), we should at least get one that stays out of the way.
The use of anecdotes - like the author's childhood in steel town Sharon, PA., as the example of what the American dream used to mean, is effective. I found myself asking, "Yeah, how come my dad - also a blue collar manufacturing worker - was able to own and house and support my mom, my brother and me on one income?" And "Today, why does it take another few billion in borrowed money to fix a bridge?" Ditto for the extensive use of stories told in the words of experienced and successful entrepreneurs. By weaving the facts and figures into their stories and dialogue, there is no tedium - this makes for an entertaining read that will actually be read - this is not the kind of business book that goes straight from the bookstore to the bookshelf.
"Great Again" makes for a fascinating primer in the relationship between patents and jobs, as are the mechanics of the Patent Office. I had no idea the Patent Office is self-funded (and forgot it was established by the US Constitution!) My blood boils to learn that our insatiable Congress has withheld the income rightfully earned by the Patent Office - redirecting it to other federal programs. I'm a huge opponent of the "stimulus" plan, but having read "Great Again," I'd be an advocate to giving the Patent Office $1B - or more - of the yet un-squandered stimulus to increase the Patent Office's staffing of lawyers and engineers needed to break this million-patent log jam. THAT would be real stimulus.
"Great Again" fills a void that has been the missing element of "the lost decade" - leadership - the kind of leadership that realizes expanding the size of the pie through innovation and private investment provides greater prosperity for all. As heated debates about job creation and federal budgets in Washington DC rage, the message of "Great Again" is as timely as it is urgent. While the "flat-earthers" like Freidman are getting the ink, there is a frightening dearth of informed, instructive, and actionable content like this available. As clueless politicians begin to realize they've followed the Freidmans and Krugmans down a bottomless sinkhole, "Great Again" just may be the formula we need to prevent America from becoming a Banana Republic. Bravo!

The innovation engine that powered the U.S. economy to unmatched prosperity over the last century is now failing, threatening the way we work and live. As the nation spins its wheels--reeling from the job losses of the recession and seemingly unable to generate the breakthroughs needed to propel alternative energy, medicine, and other critical fields--Europe and especially Asia have begun to capture the leadership of crucial new technology sectors. How can America revitalize its innovation leadership and kick-start the economy again? In Great Again, veteran high-tech CEO Henry Nothhaft takes us inside the heart of America's innovation community to surface a new proposal for the job creation and economic growth we need.Bringing to life the human drama of the exhilarating, demanding and often frustrating startup environment, Nothhaft offers this complex world as the setting for a promising solution to the country's current standstill.Nothhaft, with journalist David Kline, says a breakthrough can be achieved through a series of practical and achievable tax, regulatory and other reforms that would help strengthen entrepreneurial startup businesses--and offer the necessary fuel for an American resurgence. They key is to bolster the segment and lessen the startup's struggle against a perfect storm of "red tape" burdens. In fact, this entrepreneurial ecosystem may be the only force in society that can create revolutionary innovations that would lead to new industries and millions of new jobs--generating prosperity again for all citizens.Great Again provides fresh research and original analysis to offer an entirely new lens for recovery.Filled with evocative stories and surprising evidence of the crucial role of the innovative force in society, the book presents an action plan that both entrepreneurs and policymakers can rally behind.

Biopunk: DIY Scientists Hack the Software of Life

For a full-length review, please see my blog entry on the 5AM Solutions web site. Excerpts:
"I was excited to read this book since I am very interested in bioinformatics and punk (although the book has nothing to do with punk music). Although I wouldn't call myself a practitioner of do-it-yourself (DIY) biology, I do work for a very entrepreneurial bioinformatics and software company. The general theme of Biopunk by Marcus Wohlsen, is that we are arguably reaching a point in biotechnology similar to where computing technology was in the 1970's. That is, where the germ of successful companies can grow out of innovations by a handful of people working on a shoestring in garages and basements. Think about Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak starting Apple in their garage, or Bill Gates and Paul Allen starting Microsoft while barely 20 years old. The point, echoed by many of the people who show up in the book, is that until recently biotechnological innovation has been only accessible to scientists at commercial companies or in academic labs.
Biopunk has tons of good raw material and no end of interesting stories (bridges made of trees, a lab engineering bacteria to produce malaria medicine, etc.) but not all of them seem relevant to the main thrust of the book (that malaria lab is a commercial ones, not DIY). If Wohlsen had expanded his book to cover more territory and taken more care to weave these stories together, it could have been a powerful summary of current trends and future predictions in biotechnology."

Business Ethics: Case Studies and Selected Readings (South-Western Legal Studies in Business Academic)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One benefit of this book is that it contains articles, commentary, and discussion questions all in one text. It also covers a wide variety of issues, which is good since business ethics is a vast subject. On the negative side, I don't think the organization of the sections is the most effective way to approach the topic. The sections are organized based on a 1991 survey of CEOs in which the participants ranked their most important types of ethical dilemmas. As a result, there isn't the logical flow or progression of ideas from chapter to chapter that one might expect from a philosophy book. Unfortunately, the pragmatic interests of CEOs are not the same as the educational needs of students who are new to business ethics. There is also no discussion of ethical theories and no direct interaction between the articles. On the whole, this book may be beneficial if used in conjunction with a survey of ethical theories and ethical decision-making, but taken by itself it makes for a rather uneven introduction to business ethics.

The Digital Diet: Today's Digital Tools in Small Bytes Review

The Digital Diet: Today's Digital Tools in Small Bytes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In their book, The Digital Diet- Today's Digital Tools in Small Bytes, authors Churches, Crockett, and Jukes have empowered everyone from the most naïve of digital immigrants (like myself) to veteran "techies" (like most of my student teachers) for effectively using technology to foster productive learning in the classroom. In pragmatic, down-to-earth, 1-2-3 directions they have garnered the essence of major technological tools and presented them to learners (students and teachers) in an efficient, graduated way. They offer the latest strategies to help engage students in their own learning through various tools readily available and easily accessible on the internet.
The book's blueprint is excellent - provide the essential vocabulary, explain through both graphics and words in a common sense manner, deliver a well-thought-out rubric aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy, and provide resources for further study. Each chapter ends with follow-up questions, which can be used for individual reflection or group discussion.
Their guiding principles for what it means to be a responsible, ethical digital user should be required knowledge for every member of the internet society! This book is deceptively simple in its design and monumental in its impact. I've spend the entire week-end following up on their suggestions and can honestly say, "I'm hooked!!"
As someone who works with teachers and administrators on a daily basis, I can wholeheartedly assure both novice and veteran educators that this book is worth your time and money. It simplifies the mysteries of teaching to the digital learner and challenges us to view students as partners in their own learning! It is empowering, informative, and most of all -- useful!

This comprehensive revision of the last edition shows real improvements. Two new chapters are included on Competitive Intelligence and One-to-One Marketing. Both are welcome additions. The Internet chapter is on-line since it would be futile to try and publish on paper about a subject that changes daily. There are severeal references to internet subjects and even some of these do not exist anymore. The books design has been modernized and the cases and real-world stories are very up-to-date. I use this text to teach a Marketing Certificate program at UCSB Extension to International students and they find it very understandable and stimulating.
