As a teacher of middle schoolers, I am amazed when watching kids use their cell-phones and other assorted gizmos. Teenagers, more than most of us, have an insatiable need to connect with others--literally and virtually--it is a constant in their lives. Steven's book helped me put their behavior (as well as my own and others) into a much larger frame--one that connects the deepest human needs (and the ancient ways of meeting these) with today's technology.
An acknowledgement, I am Steven's sister-in-law!

and Gerd has a lot to say about it. Friction is Fiction is a collection of essays and blogs by media futurist Gerd Leonhard. An excellent introduction to the new paradigm shift in digital media. If you are looking to make sense of the canary in the coal mine collapse of the Compact Disc and the mainstream record company business model Leonhard explains not only what happened but what will continue to happen to content providers and users of music, film, video, books, newspapers and all forms of media. Rather than lamenting the loss of old business models Leonhard focuses primarily on the excitement and opportunities presented by the current media revolution. He is not the only proselytizer of the new culture of free but one of my favorites because of the lack of hyperbole and unnecessary drama. I also appreciate his global perspective and positive attitude. Highly recommended.

Futurist and Thought-Leader Gerd Leonhard (www.mediafuturist.com) shares his thoughts on the Future of Content, Media and Business. 'Friction is Fiction' presents a constantly updated compilation of Gerd's best essays, writings and most popular blog posts. The central meme is that the Internet has completely disrupted the traditional notion of generating higher income by simply taking advantage of possible friction points and hurdles within transactions or business processes, i.e. by controlling the 'people formerly known as consumers'. The Future is all about winning the trust, and turning attention into revenues. This is the low-cost, black & white version of the book - if you want the full-color version please go to http://gerd.fm/cmrfB1

Ron came to our PR agency over a year ago to help us as we struggled to get our clients to understand and implement social media. After Ron was kind enough to let me read the manuscript of "Read This First," confusion reigned no more for me. Social media -- how it came about and why every business needs to do it -- became crystal clear.
Read This First is written in a very conversational tone (much like the good blogger that Ron is) that will reach anybody with a few hours and an open mind. The ideas are exciting and accessible to anyone who wants to grow their business in today's connected world. Ron provides a brief history of how we came to this new era of incredible potential and promise, and how executives should best approach the opportunities in front of them for their organizations.
Because so many people have so much trouble getting their heads around the mind-boggling changes that social media represents, I tell everyone to not just read this first, read this TWICE.

If you want to learn how to monitor and manage your online reputation, if you'd like to know how to properly influence these new influencers, if you'd like to hire employees who are well equipped to work in our new online world, you need to Read This First.

Landow squeezes 20 pages of insight into over 400 pages of some of the most convoluted and repetitive writing to ever be labeled 'critical theory.' This book has little to do with technology or hypermedia as a form of communication. He reminds us, and again suggests, and then points out, and later reminds us again that hypermedia is different from books and periodicals printed on paper. This insight, delivered through meandering and pointless prose, often obscured by subordinate 'critical' statements, is not much of an insight. Using work done in the 1980s and 90s Landow suggests a great reconfiguring of narrative, of writing, and of authors (or authorship- but that's not clear). Much, much better books covering far more ground are "Convergence Culture" by Henry Jenkins and "Radiant Textuality" by McGann.

He practices what he preaches, and his own podcasts are a model for quality audio, intelligent and unobtrusive use of music, clear structure, and being enticing, yet informative. His online material on getting started in podcasting puts a lot of useful material in one place, just what the doctor ordered to do the most important thing: diving in and turning out a quality product from the word go.
His forté is promotion, to make yourself known, for developing niche credibility, product recognition, etc. and doing so using internet technology and information based services/products. As such, the name of the game is proper presentation of that most critical information: who you are and what you have to offer. Jason Van Orden models how to do so professionally, compellingly without being annoying. No overuse of exclamation points and superlatives, here.
I've been using his information to get my own personal and professional fledgling podcasts off the ground. Cannot recommend his work enough.

I started reading Join the Conversation by Joseph Jaffe in December. It's now March and I've completed it. I usually pour through a book within a week or two, but this book was different. And not different in a good way. The book has good information, but it's hidden in between sophomoric humor, euphemism crammed sentences and a self-congratulatory tone. My advice - if you plan on reading this book start at chapter 18 (page 246). That's where the real information begins.

With the continued fragmentation of the media and proliferation of media options, the balance of power has shifted from the marketer to the individual. In Join the Conversation, Jaffe discusses the changing role of the consumer and how marketers must adapt by joining the rich, deep and meaningful conversation already in progress. This book reveals what marketers must do to become a welcome and invited part of the dialogue, and how to leverage and integrate the resulting partnership in ways that provide win-win situations for businesses, brands and lives.

Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message Review

Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the first things that struck me when I began reading Citizen Marketers, was the ability that Ben and Jackie (calling them McConnell and Huba just doesn't fit) have to take a concept as misunderstood as Social Media, and scale it down to where it is accessible to all, and to do so without talking down to the reader. In fact, the book does such a good job of giving background on the various forms of social media, that it can double as a general primer on the subject.
But where CM shines is in explaining what exactly Citizen Marketing is, who these people are, and what motivates them. I'll be honest, going into reading this book, I was a bit worried that this would simply be a collection of case studies providing examples of citizen marketing, bookended with an introduction and conclusion chapter. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Ben and Jackie have done exhaustive research into the subject of citizen marketing, and instead of simply rehashing examples such as the CGM buzz behind Snakes on a Plane, Jarvis' Dell Hell, or the liberation of Fiona Apple (quite possibly my favorite story in the book, which I'd never heard of previously), Ben and Jackie talked to all the parties involved, and discovered what they did, why they did it, and who they did it for.
Their conclusion was that they were dealing with, concerned citizens. Citizens whose love of their favorite brand compelled them to take action on its behalf. And thanks to the rise of the internet, and more specifically social media, those concerned citizens not only have the tools necessary to produce their own brand marketing, they have the ability to reach others, and mobilize them to share their cause. One person's blog post lamenting the cancellation of a favorite TV show can blossom into a full-fledged petition drive that saves the series. A bad customer service experience at a fast food restaurant can be recorded and uploaded to YouTube within minutes. Jarvis' post about his dissatisfaction over his Dell erupted into Dell Hell, which eventually forced the Austin-based computer maker to totally re-examine their customer-service, and revamp their policy on reading and responding to bloggers(IOW, creating a policy for reading and responding to bloggers).
But in my opinion, the heart of the book lies in Ben and Jackie's breakdown of Citizen Marketers into four distinct categories, which they have dubbed 'The Four Fs', all with their own motivations for their actions:
1. Filters
The Filters collect all manner of stories, blog posts, podcasts, etc. related to a specific topic, and present them in one place. These filters serve mainly as an aggregator for content in all forms related to a particular topic, but also add their own analysis and commentary on occasion.
2. Fanatics
The Fanatics are very similar to evangelists. They love(obsess?) over their favorite brand/product/person/company, and are committed to informing others about this topic. They are in the truest sense of the term 'Customer Evangelist'. But they also have great love for the brand/company/person, and aren't afraid to criticize any action that they feel is detrimental to its progress.
3. Facilitators
Facilitators are community creators/builders. They bring like-minded individuals together around a central framework, usually an only forum or blog. Ben and Jackie liken them to 'online mayors'.
4. Firecrackers
Firecrackers are the one-hit wonders of citizen marketers. They may create a hit sensation viral video, or a blogging meme, and then never be heard from again. As with their namesake, they burn very brightly and quickly, and burn out just as rapidly.
In conclusion, buy this book. It isn't a marketing book, it's a book about your community of customers. What motivates them, and what inspires them to take action, both on behalf of, and against your brand. A customer is shaken from their apathy toward a brand, and spurned to action either in response to a brand's indifference towards them, or as a result of the brand's reaching out and offering the hand of empowerment to them. Right now your brand likely sits on one side of this fence, and gaining a better understanding of your customers and what gives them the incentive to act, will help you understand how they view you.

""A solid... insightful explanation of how the Internet has armed the consumer—which is to say, everyone—against the mindless blather of corporate messaging attempts. Drop everything and read this book.""—The Wall Street JournalThe woman next to you in the coffee shop, typing madly on her laptop, just might be determining the ending to next year's block-buster film or how quickly the hottest new PDAT hits store shelves. In homes, dorm rooms, waiting rooms, planes and trains around the world, millions of people are exercising enormous influence on what we buy, even though they have no official connection to those products and services. Who are they? What motivates them? Marketing experts Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba explore the ramifications of social media in Citizen Marketers. As everyday people increasingly create content on behalf of companies, brands or products, they are collaborating with others just like themselves and forming ever-growing communities of enhusiasts and evangelists. Fromthe rough to the sophisticated, the ""user-generated media"" of blogs, online bulletin boards, podcasts, photos, songs, and animations are influencing companies' customer relationships, product design, and marketing campaigns, whether they participate willingly or not. Citizen Marketers is the first book to document this phenomenon, examining some of the early winners and losers in this new genre, as well as some of its most noted constituents. With their exceptional knowledge of brands, products, companies and industries, the citizen marketers are democratizing traditional notions of communication and marketing, even entire business models.Features:

eBay marketing expert and author Marsha Collier returns to bookstores with "The Ultimate Online Customer Service Guide: How to Connect with Your Customers to Sell More" (Wiley). In it, Collier, a long time internet user (can you say UseNet?) shows readers how the old adage "the customer is king" can be applied in the modern-day marketplace. We've all heard the stories of how certain companies aided their customer relationships by creating a robust online feedback loop (famously Comcast, Zappos, etc.) but Collier explains just how every business, large or small, can benefit from the new world of social communication. Collier explains how to build customer relationships, not just on your dedicated website, but how to interact with users on various platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Posterous and the latest geo-tagging sites like Foursquare and Whrrl. Maintenance and tone are important ingredients in Collier's customer service recipe and she even goes so far as to describe the habits of all the various demographic groups and sub-groups (GenMix) along with examples from companies that work well in this arena (Dell, JetBlue) to those who got stuck behind the curve (NASCAR). Read, learn, engage.

Social Media 101: Tactics and Tips to Develop Your Business Online Review

Social Media 101: Tactics and Tips to Develop Your Business Online
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Will books be replaced by blogs? Social Media 101 is a blog in book form. While there's some good information here, the book lacks narrative, mixes cliches with some worthwhile tools and serves up a lot of scattered information.
The longer I read Social Media 101, the more I wondered if author Chris Brogan had read a book lately and realized that what works in an interactive medium looks like a mess on the printed page. Readers of blogs find their minds wandering after 800 words. Book readers expect more than a bunch of ideas that flashed through someone's head. Moreover book buyers expect a product that provides more value than something free. Much of Social Media 101 reads like a stream of conscious conversation. Brogan starts with "Above all else people," gives us a few cliches and then moves on to "People like to be engaged." As he skips from topic to topic the book gets worse. A chapter entitled Velocity, Flexibility, Economy includes a blurb on Google's smart phone, Flexibility, a blub on various applications and Economy, descriptions of things like Skype which reduce the costs of many jobs. The fact that the author, publishers and editors all okay'd this (probably because the topic "Social Media" is such a draw) is pretty sad.
I know that everyone is dying to find out more about social media and what they can do with it. Unfortunately what readers' need is a thoughtful, well organized tool that will help them put together a strategy. This book of tips won't cut it. The author never bit the bullet and took the time to write a real book from the notes in his blog.

Socialnomics: How Social Media Transforms the Way We Live and Do Business Review

Socialnomics: How Social Media Transforms the Way We Live and Do Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Qualman insightfully advises companies to patiently build relationships with customers through social media, rather than instantly getting a customer's name and e-mail address into its database. "Good businesses realize that it's not all about the instant win of getting someone into a database," he says. "Rather it is cultivating that relationship via social media. If it's done correctly, you will have a relationship that lasts a lifetime." Throughout the book he tries, but doesn't quite succeed, to show how to "correctly" cultivate such relationships.
Another insight: He says on page 111 that marketers will need to create content (news, entertainment, and how-to information, for example) for their websites, not just advertising messages.
Unfortunately, insights like those are few and far between.
Qualman's platitudinous premise is stated in the introduction, and again in the conclusion:
"It's all about the economy, stupid. No, it's all about a people-driven economy, stupid. If anything, I hope that you have learned this from reading this book."
(In the introduction, Qualman explained that the phrase "It's the economy, stupid" was coined in 1992 by James Carville, Bill Clinton's campaign manager. Qualman merely "adjusted" that phrase to create the book's alleged premise.)
After reading the book, I still don't have the slightest idea how the "people-driven economy" differs from "the economy." Or what the adjusted phrase means.
This book is full of superficial anecdotes and miniscule case studies, platitudes and generalizations, unsupported opinions, idle speculation, specious claims, inconsistent style, imprecise language, typos, and bad punctuation.
In some of Qualman's examples, I couldn't tell whether the facts were real or hypothetical. In many of the micro-case studies, he shows how a company accomplished a certain objective through social media, but does not establish that the objectives could not have been accomplished more cost-effectively through other marketing channels.
He describes the case of Dancing Matt--about Matt Harding, who filmed himself dancing around the world and put his videos on YouTube. The videos were hugely popular, so Stride Gum sponsored his further travels and video production. Stride exercised restraint and placed its logo discreetly at the end of the video (in the post roll). Qualman claims Stride earned "millions of dollars in brand equity," but does not support that claim with any data or sources. Is it his own guesstimate, or did the company tell him it earned "millions"? No clue.
He claims that social media activities "connect parents to their kids like never before." He offers no source, data, or study to support that statement, and he is clearly not qualified to offer that opinion.
Regarding microblogging, he says, "What once took place only periodically around the watercooler [sic] is now happening in real time." Huh? What can be more real-time than water cooler conversations?
He says (on page 52) that micro-blogging functions as a kind of log that you can look back on--at the end of a day or week or month--and review your posts and updates. "It's extremely enlightening because it shows you how you are spending what precious time you have." Ah, yes, it's not only improving the way parents relate to their kids, it's therapeutic as well.
As a downside of social media, he says, Generation Y and Z [are having] difficulty with face-to-face conversations." No support for that claim. Is that his personal observation? He's a marketer, not a sociologist.
He says that staying connected, through social media, to the people who elected Obama president will be the "key to his success as president." The key!
He says social media "allows for a government to be more in tune with the country and to truly run as a democracy by stripping away the politics and getting to the core of what matters." Uh huh.
He recites marketing platitudes that have been true for decades or centuries, but treats them as though social media makes them especially true. An example: "Companies that produce great products and services...will be winners in the socialnomic world."
Here is an example of idle speculation. Qualman uses an example involving NBC's failure to put its 2008 Olympics coverage online in certain circumstances. "Most likely, NBC and their advertisers...were judging themselves using old metrics..." Sorry, you can't prove a point with a "most likely." Qualman could have contacted NBC's marketing department and asked them why they didn't. But that would have required real journalism.
Regarding the concept of network neutrality (although he doesn't use that phrase), Qualman says that if Internet service providers start charging for usage ("per stream") rather than a fixed monthly fee, that would be "malicious."
Qualman devotes almost five pages (perhaps the longest case study in the book) to the Scrabulous case, where the Agarwalla brothers created an online game similar to Scrabble, which they called Scrabulous and which attracted 500,000 daily users at its peak. Hasbro, owner of the Scrabble brand, issued a cease-and-desist letter and pushed Scrabulous off the web. Qualman excoriates Hasbro for being heavy-handed in the case, and he quotes several other marketing professionals who likewise criticize Hasbro for being short-sighted. Yet Qualman presents not a single quote or statement from Hasbro, nor does he speculate as to why Hasbro's believed its legal action was necessary.
I could go on, but you get the point.

Putting the Public Back in Public Relations: How Social Media Is Reinventing the Aging Business of PR

Not a bad book. I thought it read pretty well. It's full length, has some good content, and is current as far as I could see when it comes to the topic of social media MARKETING (SMM). And it presents SMM from the slant of a competent up-to-date public relations professional. If you are a public relations professional and have not yet crawled out of the Dark Ages and become computer literate, then I highly recommend you give this book a read. But for the rest of us who have been following SMM (whether we are public relations specialists or not), then I didn't really see much new covered or included in this tome. As a result I am going to drop my star rating for it down a notch. The book is broken into the following 5 parts and 19 chapters:
Part I. The true value of new PR (1-5)
Part II. Facilitating conversations: New tools & techniques (6-10)
Part III. Participating in social media (11-14)
Part IV. PR 2.0: A promising future (15-18)
Part V. Convergence (19)
0.1 -The socialization of media & PR 2.0
0.2 -Introduction: Social media is the reinvention of public relations
1. What's wrong with PR?
2. PR 2.0 versus public relations
3. PR 2.0 in a Web 2.0 world
4. Traditional versus new journalism
5. PR is about relationships
6. The language of new PR
7. Blogger relations
8. Social media releases (SMRs)
9. Video news releases (VNR) 2.0
10. Corporate blogging
11. Technology does not override the social sciences
12. Social networks: The online hub for your brand
13. Micromedia
14. New "marketing" roles
15. Community managers & customer service 2.0
16. Socialization of communication & service
17. The rules for breaking news
18. A new guide to metrics
19. PR 2.0 & PR 1.0 equals putting the public back in PR
A. The SEC & the importance of recognizing corporate blogs as public disclosure
B. It's alive! A roadmap to the social media dynamic landscape
I did not see a chapter on Investor Relations (IR). And since we all know that is ALL about public relations in large companies I viewed that as a gap, hole or deficiency in the book. I don't consider it to be something that can easily be merged into the topic of "corporate blogging." This is especially true after the authors included Appendix A regarding SEC regulations.
My favorite part of the book was Appendix B where the authors include a grid of URLs and short explanations for each. I found it to be a wonderful crib sheet or toolkit for an SMM professional to use when building his or her marketing and PR game plans. 4 stars!

Social Media Analytics: Effective Tools for Building, Interpreting, and Using Metrics Review

Social Media Analytics: Effective Tools for Building, Interpreting, and Using Metrics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a how-to book. It's more of a "why should I", or "which tool do I buy" book? There are many books that address why companies need to be using Social Media, how to sell it to the C-suite, how to set up a Facebook page, or how to engage with fans and followers. Social Media Analytics is the only book that takes a deep dive into several of the major vendors of monitoring and measuring tools. Whether your are selling a brand or monitoring a political campaign, you'll need to know what to measure, how to measure, and how the data can provide actionable results. You're not buying analytics just to look at pretty charts and graphs, are you?
The importance of the analyst is emphasized in this book, and for good reason. Without a solid understanding of what you're looking for before setting up an analytics platform, you could end up with reams of data that are meaningless, and provide no value to your business, or client. Too many agencies are using an ax when what they really need is a scalpel.
Many of the tools discussed in the book aren't designed for very small businesses, but the concepts can be scaled down and used with free or inexpensive tools. For the larger business or agency, Social Media Analytics provides the framework to make the best tool/platform choices. Decision makers will learn the vital importance of understanding what they want from data, before they commit to a platform/vendor. The wrong choice can waste time and money!
Marshall Sponder is the only Social Media Analyst with access to dozens, if not hundreds of analytic platforms. He is able to discuss each tool from the perspective of an experienced user, rather than relying on sales pitches to determine a platform's capabilities and limitations.
Social Media Analytics is full of relevant case studies, and in-depth interviews with executives and developers of analytic platforms. Digital versions of the book include many links to companies and articles cited in the book.
There's a lot of value here for PR, marketing, and MarComm agencies, but perhaps even more for their clients and other decision makers who want to know the quality of the data they are paying for, and how useful the resulting reports will be.

About the Book

Practically overnight, social media has become a critical tool for every marketing objective—from outreach and customer relations to branding and crisis management. For the most part, however, the data collected through social media is just that: data. It usually seems to hold little or no meaning on which to base business decisions. But the meaning is there . . . if you're applying the right systems and know how to use them.

With Social Media Analytics, you'll learn how to get supremely valuable information from this revolutionary new marketing tool. One of the most respected leaders in his field and a pioneer in Web analytics, Marshall Sponder shows how to:
Choose the best social media platforms for your needs
Set up the right processes to achieve your goals
Extract the hidden meaning from all the data you collect
Quantify your results and determine ROI

Filled with in-depth case studies from a range of industries, along with detailed reviews of several social-monitoring platforms, Social Media Analytics takes you beyond "up-to-date" and leads you well into the future—and far ahead of your competition. You will learn how to use the most sophisticated methods yet known to find customers, create relevant content (and track it), mash up data from disparate sources, and much more. Sponder concludes with an insightful look at where the field will likely be going during the next few years.

Whether your social media marketing efforts are directed at B2B, B2C, C2C, nonprofit, corporate, or public sector aims, take them to the next step with the techniques, strategies, and methods in Social Media Analytics—the most in-depth, forward-looking book on the subject.

How often does it happen that you find something so suddenly, directly, and immediately useful? All the time? Never?
For those who have begun an online presence, whether starting a new business, raising awareness for a cause, or just social networking, you know the internet is a cacophony of screaming voices all demanding to be heard. And there you are, stepping into the gale, trying to get your message out while torrents of distractions roar by: lolcatz, FAILBlog, Greatest WoW Freak Out Ever! How do you fight that?
You don't. You gear up with a powerful sound system, crank it to eleven, and take the stage.
Chapman has taken her years of experience in the online realm and distilled the essences of what works. A fulltime writer, blogger, and web designer, she has contributed her expertise on social media and internet topics to some of the most popular blogs in the world ([...]). With that expertise, she has produced a truly essential handbook for marketing in the digital age.
Part primer, part reference guide, part marketing plan, part personal consultant, Internet Famous dives right in to the history of social media, identifies the many varieties, and explains the various benefits of each. And there are many... Sure, most of us already know about Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Maybe even LinkedIn. But what about Buzznet? Flixster? DeviantART?
Knowledge of these sites doesn't translate into overnight success, of course, so Chapman takes the reader on a logical journey from the very start. She helps the reader identify their ultimate goal and launches a thorough analysis of how to get there: finding a niche, building your own site, promoting it (and yourself) with blogging/microblogging, involvement in social networks, photo sharing, videos, podcasting/vlogging, SEO (search engine optimization), linkbait, and a lot more.
Once the major parts are in place, Chapman advises sagely on the strategies of internet marketing. Her expertise glows with dos and don'ts to avoid derailing your entire effort (My personal favorite is "How to not look like a dork"). She presents valuable strategies for preserving your online reputation, even how to respond to negative publicity should you encounter it. And she provides time management practices which will keep you from being sucked into your computer all day.
Follow her advice, and you just may find your online fame carries over to the off-line world of fans, interviews, and social events. Oh, yeah...and income. Highly recommended. Essential for anyone starting any form of on-line presence.
