There are a lot of career books that tell you WHAT you are supposed to do to find a job or take your career to the next level. What I really like about Awaken Your Careerpreneur is that Alexia Vernon helps you figure out WHO you want to be in your career and to customize all of her tips for your specific purpose. Her stories are funny and relevant and what she calls SUCCESSwork, interactive coaching exercises, really help you stay on track. It would have been great to have read this book 20 years ago so I highly recommend it for college students and recent grads. Although those who are switching careers, want to start a business, or simply want to goal set for bigger and better things will also find it really valuable.

Fashion Unraveled - Second Edition: How to Start and Manage Your Own Fashion (or Craft) Design Business Review

Fashion Unraveled - Second Edition: How to Start and Manage Your Own Fashion (or Craft) Design Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved the practical, down-to-earth attitude of the book. Many guides for first-time business owners seem to emphasize the excitement and ease of being your own boss. Fashion Unraveled makes no such claims--it lets you know that you are definitely capable of starting your own successful business but it's going to take time and a tremendous amount of effort. You shouldn't expect your business to turn a profit until the third year of operation, but if you have a desirable product and know how to sell and market it, you will eventually be able to live off the income from your business. I think this book could definitely be used by people who choose fashion design as a hobby rather than a fulltime career (for example, I've met a few women who design purses or t-shirts, but don't intend to launch their own line or open their own store), but it's mainly aimed at those who would prefer to work for themselves one day.
Fashion Unraveled is also very user-friendly. It explains some complicated business concepts in a very straightforward manner, and it keeps its information clear and understandable without ever talking down to the reader. As the preface states, the whole layout of the book is designed with creative people in mind--almost every page contains lined space to jot down notes and ideas, and the Case Study examples at the end of every chapter shows the entire development phase of one woman's fashion design business, accompanied by identical pages for the reader to fill in with their own market research, mission statements, business model, etc. The case study and the various interviews listed in the Designer Profiles were very inspiring--here are real people who are making a living in the industry!
This 2nd edition of the book presents extremely current information about the fashion industry, and takes into account the recent economic downturn and the explosion of new media like Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. The author lists dozens of internet resources that designers can use to find trade show listings, distribute press releases, connect to indie fashion communities and more. A contemporary businessperson must know their competition, cultivate their online presence, and be constantly ready to network, follow up, and promote their clothing line. The advice is perfectly geared toward today's audience and is coming from an author who has extensive hands-on experience in fashion design, business, and teaching.
I must say, I am not a fashion maven. This is not my field, and yet I was absolutely riveted by this book. The parts I was most moved by were the discussions of eco-friendly practices in the fashion business. I visited some of the sites mentioned and as a result, I've developed a strong interest in upcycled and recycled clothing and sustainable fashion. It's like discovering a whole different world, where instead of contributing to a disposable culture, fashion can be turned in the opposite direction and used to help people be more aware of their impact on the environment.
Fashion Unraveled is basically an entire college course in one book. Whether you're a newbie to the world of fashion like myself, a serious-minded designer or crafter ready to become an entrepreneur, or just a fan of Project Runway and the fashion world in general, you'll find this book informative, inspiring, and tailored for your keeper shelf.

First of all, its hard to believe that this book costs $20 - there's not enough information here to justify the price tag. Alright, this book was just released so the price might change within some time and what won't change is this...
Plenty of it is common sense, unfortunately. If you use your head, some of this stuff should not be new to you. Yes, there are online resources mentioned throughout the book, but the only new one to me is JibberJobber.
Maybe its good for beginners, but its not very useful if you ever went through an online search before.

Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0: 1,001 Unconventional Tips, Tricks and Tactics for Landing Your Dream Job
Average Reviews:

First review: March 13, 2010
Now, April 13, 2011, 13 months later...
If you are serious about finding a new career opportunity, this book is required reading. Don't do another thing at all in your job search until you have this book in your hands and read it. It is better that you do nothing at all than to do something without David Perry's guidance, coaching, wisdom and insight.
Do you want a larger paycheck sooner rather than later? If so, invest in yourself. Buy this book. Not buying it will probably cost you thousands of dollars. Buying it will cost you about $[...] (with shipping). If you had the opportunity to buy David Perry a Starbucks, sit down with him for 3 hours and pick his brain, I bet you would do it. That is what you are doing here...having a virtual cup of coffee with the best in the business in job hunting. But it gets even better...with his book you have all of the notes from that meeting, in writing, to review and use over and over again.
Now, with that having been said, I am sitting here at my desk eagerly downloading my preview copy of Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0. WHY?
I am a "headhunter." I do not call myself a recruiter. I do not call myself an "executive search" consultant. I PLACE PEOPLE into COMPANIES. I help companies "hire to win." I am 100% commissioned in what I do. If I do NOT place my candidate into an open position, I don't get paid. I don't eat! I am in the JOB HUNT BATTLE EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE!
Thus, what I do MUST WORK! All too many job hunting books are written by HR professionals and career counselors who will get their salary or get their "career counseling consulting fee" regardless of whether you get hired or not.
SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH GUERRILLA 3.0?? In one word, "EVERYTHING"!
I started my "headhunting" business in 2003. I was very good at it. In 2005, I saw Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters in the book store. I read the bio and learned that David Perry is a "recruiter" so I figured I would buy a copy and peruse it. After just a few pages, I was highlighting, paper clipping, taking notes and devouring the book. The very next day I was in the office reshaping the way I did business.
*I learned how to write powerful cover letters and send them to my clients on my candidate's behalf
*I honed my voice mail scripts
*I started role playing mock interviews with the candidates I presented
*...and the list could go on...
The main point is I learned how to truly differentiate myself as a recruiter. I learned how to be a "guerrilla" and that is when I can say I went from being a recruiter to being a "headhunter." More importantly, I learned how to powerfully differentiate the candidates I represented so THAT THEY WOULD GET HIRED!!! And they did. I was a top 200 recruiter in the MRI Network out of over 8000 recruiters for 3 years in a row. GUERRILLA WORKS for getting hired.
In 2009, I started building my firm and started hiring people to work for me. The first book I went to buy for training my new people was Guerrilla and to my dismay, it was "out of print." I panicked. But with a few clicks, I quickly discovered that, in just another few weeks, Guerrilla 2.0 was coming out. I pre-ordered 7 copies.
When the book landed in my office, we all did a deep dive. That year our entire recruiting firm, with rookies, billed close to a million dollars by PLACING PEOPLE.
So you can see why I can't wait to read 3.0.
David teaches you HOW TO PLACE YOURSELF...HOW TO RISE ABOVE YOUR COMPETITION AND WIN THE JOB YOU WANT instead of letting it go to someone else.
If you get 3.0 and don't get anything from it, I want to know why. Shoot me an email at [...]
Yes, his methods are different. Yes, they can be scary. Yes, you initially will be nervous using them. Guess what!? I have made money using them and you will too....HOW? You will get hired and get your paycheck!!
And here is the best part...he tells you exactly what to do. You aren't left guessing. So unless you are retired or planning on retiring this year, you need this book. Whether you are an introvert, extrovert, salesperson, engineer, manager, accountant, lawyer or just graduating from college, this publication is required reading.

I've been a long-time fan of the authors' website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I've read lots of "work at home" books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst's and Haaren's new book doesn't dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know - where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they've checked out every one of the websites, plus they've organized the listing into job types (they've included categories such as "merchandiser" and "notary" that are more "work FROM home). They've even included a category of websites for work in the "adult" industry (if you're so inclined)!
The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.
All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies (For Dummies (Career/Education)) Review

Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies (For Dummies (Career/Education))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a seasoned IT & Engineering Recruiter with over 15 years experience. I have been through the .Com Boom, the .Com Bust, several recessions, a whole cornucopia of technology births, and the advent of social media as a job-search tool. As a recruiter I know that it just gets harder and harder to find and qualify excellent candidates, for me and for my clients. I use social media daily to find and to qualify candidates. When I present a candidate to my client, I know that the client will go to Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace, or wherever, and take a look at my candidate. And I've seen cases where candidates were presented to clients, who then found those candidates on social networking sites, and for one reason or another, lost interest. Unless you're living in a cave, job-seekers need to understand to what extent they are digitally exposed. Joshua has been working as a social-media/job search/networking guru for a number of years and this book gives job-seekers a crystal clear blue print of what to do and what not to do in order to use social media to help and not hinder their search.

I was having a tough time updating my Resume after years out of the job hunt picture. I got this book by Tony Beshara, and have had a hard time putting it down. It has EVERYTHING you need to write one of the best possible Resumes, to help you get hired. Just the sample Resumes alone are worth the price of the book.
If you can only afford one book for your job search, then this should be that book-Without the best Resume, you may not even get the interview. And of course if you get the interview, read "Acing the Interview", another excellent book.

Career Crossroads Review

Career Crossroads

I stalled on reading this book being the procastionater I am. Once I did get into it, I really got excited. I did not know how to apply what I have done in a career of 15 years until I finally had to sit down and rethink all I have done. Once I read it, I got to comparing what I had done and how to apply the skills I had to whatever I was applying for. It made me realize how much I could do. I went into a interview (usually nervous)and was calm, and felt confident in it. They didn't ask me questions that I thought they would ask. Because of my studying this book and analyzing myself I gave answers that surprised even me. Needless to say, I felt I gave my best in this interview and felt really good about it. I got the call a day later for the 2nd interview and the day after they called to offer me the job. I am where I want to be and I owe it to
Career Crossroads.
Thank you

Conor once again creates the essence of what makes a great read. First is the entertaining story, which is delightfully humorous and just plain fun to read. But the more rewarding adventure is in the deeper second level. He is spot-on in detailing the issues, that roller coaster ride, that confronts anyone in transition, and teaches with verve, the necessary skills to overcome the challenges in finding your next great opportunity. And Conor wastes no time in getting to the point. In the Prologue, he states that "these eight building blocks will help the job seeker become more productive and engaged". Engaged is the operative word. It's the Rosetta Stone to Conor's insight of the subject. Whether this is your first experience in transition, or facing the experience all over again, this is a must-read, and needs to an essential part of your reference library. Following his advice will not only take months off your search, but will make the journey a far better experience for you - and your family!

Job Search Bloopers: Every Mistake You Can Make on the Road to Career Suicide...and How to Avoid Them Review

Job Search Bloopers: Every Mistake You Can Make on the Road to Career Suicide...and How to Avoid Them
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" is definitely true in the case of "Job Search Bloopers" by Laura DeCarlo and Susan Guarneri. When I first viewed the book on the shelf, the cartoon cover and fun title led me to believe that I'd be reading fluffy, turn-the-page quickly anecdotes from a series of unfortunate job seekers--something like the "Darwin Awards" of the careers industry.
What I wasn't prepared for, was that this content-rich book was going to be a must read for all job seekers. Based on numerous true-to-life examples from professional resume writing members of Career Directors International, this book covers everything from cover letter casualties, resume writing roadblocks, interview inadequacies and more...in fact, every part of the job search experience where something can go wrong (and has) is covered.
Just pointing out mistakes made by job seekers is only part of the book and this is where the nuggets of gold can be found as the authors excel in creating new strategies so that job seekers can either overcome, or hopefully never have to face, these self-sabotaging stumbles.
The strategies are smart, intelligent and commonsense and you can either read from beginning-to-end or you can choose individual chapters to source information that suits your situation. If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is when one person has a disappointing experience, he or she is not the only one! You can learn from the mistakes of others in an entertaining way, while at the same time finding out what to do to resolve it, or do it better next time.
Truly a must-have in the library of job seekers globally.

You're Hired Interview Skills to Get the Job Review

You're Hired Interview Skills to Get the Job
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a former HR manager, career coach and consultant, I've read a lot of hiring and selection books.
When I received a copy of You're Hired for review, I rolled my eyes and thought, "Please, not another book on how to get a job. I've already read the best, like the timeless, What Color is Your Parachute? Fortunately, You're Hired was a nice change of pace. It's concise and focused on key aspects of interviewing for a job, without the fluff.
In five chapters with 10 brief Appendices, Epstein discusses three phases of job interviews: Before, During, and After the Interview.
-- In Chapter One, Epstein highlights the importance of "Creating Right Livelihood" in order to craft a satisfying and financially productive career. He shows the reader how to envision and plan this "Right Livelihood" through a lengthy but useful activity in Appendix A.
--In Chapter Two, the author comments on preparation of an effective resume and thoughtful research in order to land an interview.
-- In Chapter Three, Mr. Epstein talks about the importance of selling yourself during the interview by being prepared, authentic, confident, and connected with the interviewers.
-- Chapter Four highlights the importance of written "thank you" notes, timely follow-up and declining counter-offers made by one's current employer.
-- Chapter Five features a one-page conclusion summarizing the contents of the book.
The writing style is down-to-earth and personalized as if Epstein is coaching and encouraging the reader through the process of interviewing. The tone is not pretentious as I've observed in other books of a similar nature. The chapters are well-organized and build upon each other.
I didn't understand the relevance of Appendix C on "Boolean Searching on the Internet" and can't imagine a busy job searcher would actually read those 10 pages that seemed out of place in this guide. I would have found it more helpful to read an additional chapter on networking through associations or organizations in order to discover the "hidden" job market.
Armchair Interviews recommends this book for professionals in career transition or students seeking a concise guide for learning the basics of interviewing for success.

Job Hunting After 50 Review

Job Hunting After 50
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At it's core, "Job Hunting After 50" sends a decidedly discouraging message. On the one hand, the author stresses (repeatedly) how critical it is for the older job seeker to keep a positive attitude; on the other, referencing the admittedly sorry state of 2011's job market, she persistently suggests job seekers lower their expectations, particularly salary expectations.
Certainly, there's no getting around the fact that a lot of U.S. workers are having to make tough decisions, including accepting lower wages, but a job search manual should have more to offer than a resigned "accept less". (How about some strategies for not bidding down one's own starting salary? A discouraged worker is just as much at risk of undercutting their own chances there than of holding out for an unrealistic amount.) And that's just the start of where this book falls short.
For the post-50 job seeker, some of whom haven't been in the position of being "between jobs" frequently, if ever, there's a potential minefield of job scams out there, as well as considerations such as "is that health care plan with the new job (if it exists) sufficient to cover anything more than basic preventative?", or "will that temp-to-perm job actually go perm?" (the ranks of the permanently temp-status are growing), or even "will I have to consider relocation to stay in my profession?"
These questions are all beyond the scope of this book, and some of them really shouldn't be. One sadly proliferating industry is that of pseudo headhunter/job coaches who purport to take on unemployed professionals as "clients", for a fee, but actually offer the barest of "motivational" services, maybe going to far as to mail around a client's resume. These get no mention here, nor the identity thiefs and other shady characters who collect personal info anonymously from hungry job candidates, online. While Ms. Silvis touches on the benefits of technology to one's job search, she doesn't get into the pitfalls, or just what to expect on the job hunt that you wouldn't have encountered 10 years ago.
There's useful information in this book, but much of it matches what can be found on job search websites or even "handy hints" articles from Yahoo.com or the newspapers. There's no "insider content" here, certainly, to give a job seeker an edge, and in fact the book seems better suited to a candidate willing to consider basically any job within their capacity to perform (Can you teach crafts? Can you tutor, or start a business?), rather than to an experience worker/professional who is targeting a specific job or industry, or looking to repurpose specific professional skills.
One of my frustrations with this book is that I can't identify an agenda or point of view on the author's part other than that of general "interview coach". What might the author have been able to share as regards her own experiences as a professional in the field of adult education, that could give the job candidate an actual advantage in their search? It does seem to me that the author's efforts with this book were restricted to collecting useful information -- not necessarily acquired first hand -- and then organizing it in her writing. She did not go on to add anything from her own observations or experiences, and thus relegated herself to that status of "invisible" narrator in this book, never referencing herself or even citing "case studies" of actual job seekers she has met.
Similarly, the author doesn't really give concrete examples of how to tool up the resume, with "before" and "after" examples. She strongly suggests mature job seekers not to list every job or educational experience, date of graduation, etc., but considering that the mature worker is often quite proud of his or her decades of accomplishments and reticent to "cut" any accomplishments, it would have been very helpful to show a number of "before" and "after" resumes, with annotations to show how the hard choices were made and how the resume was strengthened. Nada.
In some ways, I think this book might better be titled "How not to turn off or waste the time of an HR screener or interviewer." For those facing their first serious job hunt in years, if not decades, that's a triage solution inadequate to the scope of their questions.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Job Hunting After 50

The good news is that companies do hire mature workers. The bad news is that many baby boomer job seekers do not know how to carry out a modern job search or present themselves to employers in the way that best represents their background. Ineffective resumes, job searches, and interviews can derail anyone's job search, but they can completely shut out the mature job applicant. Job Hunting After 50 will prepare you with a plan of action to carry out an effective job search to get the job you want. It covers self-assessment of skills and qualifications, preparing a resume for today's market, dressing with style, using technology to find a job, identifying common mistakes made by job seekers over 50 and how to avoid them, and interviewing skills. Emphasis is placed on updating skills, improving energy level and attitude, and determining where the best jobs are for this age group. Commit the necessary time to finding a job, but work smarter by following the principles in Job Hunting After 50.

Nail Your Law Job interview: The Essential Guide to Firm, Clerkship, Government, In-House, and Lateral Interviews Review

Nail Your Law Job interview: The Essential Guide to Firm, Clerkship, Government, In-House, and Lateral Interviews
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a mid-level associate at a large international law firm, I strongly recommend this book to anyone trying to get the law firm job you want, whether you are a prospective or current law student or a recent graduate. I did not attend a top 10 law school, nor was I at the top of my class when interviewing for a summer associate position. As a result, my prospects of getting the big law job I wanted boiled down to my ability to truly nail my job interview. In the end, I was fortunate enough to succeed, but only after I learned the hard way from all the interviewing mistakes I had made along the way. If I had had this book when I interviewed, I know I would have received a lot more offers than I ended up getting. It is an excellent toolkit for selling and distinguishing yourself in the best way possible, which these days will prove more important than ever -- Ivy League or not.
