I've known Jayne for quite a few years, so my expectations for this work were high. Nevertheless, they were exceeded. The book is packed with actionable advice and covers the "how to" as well as they "why to." It would be useful for any business professional hoping to understand the proper use of social media in business development. There are a few typos and editing issues, but they do not detract from the valule of this small, yet densely packed book. Because it is published by a specialty house, it's a little more expensive than you might like, but it is completely worth it. Buy it and USE IT!

I've read or seen most of the material in this book online and am a big fan of Cory's work. I thought this would be a great resource to have instead of a bunch of print outs or bookmarks. Cory Doctorow has some of the best thought out arguments against DRM and for digital freedoms, pointing out tons of interesting historical examples along the way. Great read!

Hardcore Inventing: Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit From Your Inventions Review

Hardcore Inventing: Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit From Your Inventions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

When I cruise through B&N and spot a book that might be helpful to my SCORE-dot-org clients I usually take the necessary steps to write a book review for it. These days I am being a little more particular as to what I will review since I am tiring of the activity. But I could not let this book slide by. In my humbe opinion it is a great companion book to Invent Yourself Rich: 16 Secrets for Creating Million-Dollar Inventions which I read and wrote a review for a few years back.
The instant book has five parts broken into twenty chapters and three appendices as follows:
I. Invent (1-8)
II. Protect (9-11)
III. Promote (12-14)
IV. Profit (15-20)
V. Appendices (A-C)
0. Introduction
1. Success story - The Rescue Streamer Technology
2. Identifying & solving the problem
3. How nature inspired my inventions
4. Scour your brain
5. Making your idea a reality: Inventor's logs, prototypes, & marketing evaluations
6. Build a show prototype
7. Name your invention
8. Checklist - Is your idea feasible, marketable & financially viable?
9. Safeguard your intellectual property - Paranoia can be good
10. Step-by-step guide from disclosure to patent - Etch it in stone
11. Alernatives to utility patents
12. Get your invention out there
13. Find investors: Targeted strikes & mobilizing the troops
14. Protect yourself from fraudulent promotion companies
15. Licening
16. Manufacturing
17. Marketing
18. The home entrepreneur - Bottom-feeding
19. Venture Capitalists & angel investors
20. Critical crossroads
A. Useful Web sites
B. Suggested reading
C. Sample agreements & letters
The book is not written by an attorney nor a business consultant. It's written by an inventor who wants to share his experiences in getting his invention (Rescue Streamer Technology) patented and profitable. He's also probably written it as a marketing tool for his invention. If I had not read the book, then I would never have heard of his invention.
This book is probably more detailed and a little bit more informative than the book I read a few years back. It gives another perspective - so I highly recommend anyone interested in the subject get both books and become very informed on the topic. 5 stars!

Based on the author's experience in the world of inventing and promotion, HardcoreInventing offers the kind of advice you can only learn from experience: how to develop an idea into an invention, how to build a prototype for show, how to safeguard intellectual property, how to market both strategically and in "guerilla" mode, how to find investors, and much more. And all of that is based on his IP 3"Tactical Method" which breaks everything down to Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit.

Blown to Bits: Your Life, Liberty, and Happiness After the Digital Explosion Review

Blown to Bits: Your Life, Liberty, and Happiness After the Digital Explosion
Average Reviews:

This book is perfect for people who want to understand more about information technology and don't want to read something long or technical to learn it. The authors do a superb job taking the reader through how major technologies function (computers, the internet, cell phones, etc.), how they are shaping our lives, and what impacts they have on our laws and society. Amazing stories are woven throughout it, making it readable and fun for techies and non-techies alike. At the end of the book, you'll have a new understanding of the things we take for granted - and what possibilities and threats they pose. You'll also be light years ahead of most other people - who themselves will need to come up to speed in the coming years. A great read!

"If you want to understand the future before it happens, you'll love this book. If you want to change the future before it happens to you, this book is required reading."–Reed Hundt, former Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission "There is no simpler or clearer statement of the radical change that digital technologies will bring, nor any book that better prepares one for thinking about the next steps."–Lawrence Lessig, Stanford Law School and Author of Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace"Blown to Bits will blow you away. In highly accessible and always fun prose, it explores all the nooks and crannies of the digital universe, exploring not only how this exploding space works but also what it means."–Debora Spar, President of Barnard College, Author of Ruling the Waves and The Baby Business"This is a wonderful book–probably the best since Hal Varian and Carl Schultz wrote Digital Rules. The authors are engineers, not economists. The result is a long, friendly talk with the genie, out of the lamp, and willing to help you avoid making the traditional mistake with that all-important third wish."–David Warsh, Author of Knowledge and the Wealth of Nations"Blown to Bits is one of the clearest expositions I've seen of the social and political issues arising from the Internet. Its remarkably clear explanations of how the Net actually works lets the hot air out of some seemingly endless debates. You've made explaining this stuff look easy. Congratulations!"–David Weinberger, Coauthor of The Cluetrain Manifesto and Author of Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder."Blown to Bits is a timely, important, and very readable take on how information is produced and consumed today, and more important, on the approaching sea change in the way that we as a society deal with the consequences."–Craig Silverstein, Director of Technology, Google, Inc."This book gives an overview of the kinds of issues confronting society as we become increasingly dependent on the Internet and the World Wide Web. Every informed citizen should read this book and then form their own opinion on these and related issues. And after reading this book you will rethink how (and even whether) you use the Web to form your opinions…"–James S. Miller, Senior Director for Technology Policy and Strategy, Microsoft Corporation"Most writing about the digital world comes from techies writing about technical matter for other techies or from pundits whose turn of phrase greatly exceeds their technical knowledge. In Blown to Bits, experts in computer science address authoritatively the practical issues in which we all have keen interest."–Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Author of Multiple Intelligences and Changing Minds"Regardless of your experience with computers, Blown to Bits provides a uniquely entertaining and informative perspective from the computing industry's greatest minds.A fascinating, insightful and entertaining book that helps you understand computers and their impact on the world in a whole new way. This is a rare book that explains the impact of the digital explosion in a way that everyone can understand and, at the same time, challenges experts to think in new ways."–Anne Margulies, Assistant Secretary for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts"Blown to Bits is fun and fundamental. What a pleasure to see real teachers offering such excellent framework for students in a digital age to explore and understand their digital environment, code and law, starting with the insight of Claude Shannon. I look forward to you teaching in an open online school."–Professor Charles Nesson, Harvard Law School, Founder, Berkman Center for Internet and Society"To many of us, computers and the Internet are magic. We make stuff, send stuff, receive stuff, and buy stuff. It's all pointing, clicking, copying, and pasting. But it's all mysterious. This book explains in clear and comprehensive terms how all this gear on my desk works and why we should pay close attention to these revolutionary changes in our lives. It's a brilliant and necessary work for consumers, citizens, and students of all ages."–Siva Vaidhyanathan, cultural historian and media scholar at the University of Virginia and author of Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Rise of Intellectual Property and How it Threatens Creativity"The world has turned into the proverbial elephant and we the blind men. The old and the young among us risk being controlled by, rather than in control of, events and technologies. Blown to Bits is a remarkable and essential Rosetta Stone for beginning to figure out how all of the pieces of the new world we have just begun to enter–law, technology, culture, information–are going to fit together. Will life explode with new possibilities, or contract under pressure of new horrors? The precipice is both exhilarating and frightening. Hal Abelson, Ken Ledeen, and Harry Lewis, together, have ably managed to describe the elephant. Readers of this compact book describing the beginning stages of a vast human adventure will be one jump ahead, for they will have a framework on which to hang new pieces that will continue to appear with remarkable speed. To say that this is a 'must read' sounds trite, but, this time, it's absolutely true."–Harvey Silverglate, criminal defense and civil liberties lawyer and writerEvery day, billions of photographs, news stories, songs, X-rays, TV shows, phone calls, and emails are being scattered around the world as sequences of zeroes and ones: bits. We can't escape this explosion of digital information and few of us want to–the benefits are too seductive. The technology has enabled unprecedented innovation, collaboration, entertainment, and democratic participation. But the same engineering marvels are shattering centuries-old assumptions about privacy, identity, free expression, and personal control as more and more details of our lives are captured as digital data. Can you control who sees all that personal information about you? Can email be truly confidential, when nothing seems to be private? Shouldn't the Internet be censored the way radio and TV are? Is it really a federal crime to download music? When you use Google or Yahoo! to search for something, how do they decide which sites to show you? Do you still have free speech in the digital world? Do you have a voice in shaping government or corporate policies about any of this?Blown to Bits offers provocative answers to these questions and tells intriguing real-life stories. I found this book to be helpful in conducting Internet searches in general, although it is written primarily for those in the legal profession. It is well-written, concise, and it appears the author went out of her way to put as much valuable information as possible into a small package.

Electronic Legal Research: An Integrated Approach, second edition,is dedicated to fully explainingthe rationale of legal research, guiding readers through the individual steps necessary to develop their own research strategies.Through exploration into the topic of legal database searching with substance and depth, Electronic Legal Research facilitates long-term learning. Since new products are introduced every day and the market leaders constantly change, this text takes the approach of one set of skills, Boolean searching. This approach will enable the beginning researcher to do research in nearly any electronic database, specifically training students to research paid legal databases and the Internet. Electronic Legal Research: An Integrated Approach, second edition,is based on the concept of critical thinking allowing for intelligent decisions about how to find information through effective resource selection and query construction. Rather than a traditional how-to book, Electronic Legal Research: An Integrated Approach truly facilitates learning by presenting up to date information and challenging exercises that focus on critical thinking skills and practical skill implementation. This practical approach is a useful research guide for both students and working professionals, in both paralegal and attorney roles.

Access Controlled: The Shaping of Power, Rights, and Rule in Cyberspace (Information Revolution and Global Politics) Review

Access Controlled: The Shaping of Power, Rights, and Rule in Cyberspace (Information Revolution and Global Politics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Smartly organized and edited, Access Controlled is essential reading for anyone interested in studying the methods governments are using globally to stifle online expression and dissent. There is simply no other resource out there like this; it should be required reading in every cyberlaw or information policy program.
The book, which is a project of the OpenNet Initiative (ONI), is divided into two parts. Part 1 of the book includes six chapters on "Theory and Analysis." They are terrifically informative essays. The beefy second part of the book provides a whopping 480 pages(!) of detailed regional and country-by-country overviews of the global state of online speech controls and discuss the long-term ramifications of increasing government meddling with online networks.
The book offers a useful taxonomy to illustrate the three general types of speech and information controls that states are deploying today. Throughout the book, various authors document the increasing movement away from "first generation controls," which are epitomized by "Great Firewall of China"-like filtering methods, and toward second- and third-generation controls, which are more refined and difficult to monitor.
The individual authors seem to adopt a somewhat gloomy outlook toward the long-term prospects for "technologies of freedom" relative to "technologies of control." But I think it's vital to put things in some historical context in this regard. It's important to recall that, as a communications medium, the Net is still quite young. So, is the Net really more susceptible to State control and manipulation than previous communications technologies and platforms? I'm not so sure, although it's hard to find a metric to compare them in an analytically rigorous fashion. It's certainly true that the State has access to more data about its citizens than in the past, but it's also true that we have more information about the State than ever before, too! And, again, we also have access to more of those technologies of freedom than ever before to at least try to fight back. Compare, for example, the plight of a dissident in a Cold War-era Eastern Bloc communist state to a dissident in China or Iran today. Which one had a better chance of getting their words (or audio and video) out to the local or global community?
Despite those small quibbles, Access Controlled is an indispensable resource that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who covers information technology policy and wants to better understand global Internet regualtion. Highly recommended. [You can find my complete review at the Technology Liberation Front Blog]

I am a legal assistant and I use this book constantly! It gives you great strategies to work more efficiently while getting better results. I had no idea how many legal resources there are online! This book tells you which sites are the most reliable and easy to use. It also demystifies annotated legal codes, case digests, state reports and many other research tools. But most importantly it is extremeley well organized and easy to use. I wish that I had discovered this book when I was a student!

Every Dog's Legal Guide: A Must-have Book for Your Owner

If you are thinking about buying a dog (it explains puppy mills, contracts to consider when you buy a dog and licensing laws); you already have a dog (laws you might want to consider even if you're sure your dog is always well-behaved and how to get dog insurance); you want to provide for your dog after your death (what may or may not work in your will); you hate your neighbor's dog's barking (how to talk to your neighbor or seek mediation, or your liability if you are cruel or provoke the dog) or if you suspect your neighbor's dog is mistreated or are in any other way concerned about dogs: YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. There is much more covered than what I have put here.
I expected to read a few key chapters, but ended up reading it cover to cover. It contains interesting facts throughout (have you ever thought about the number of dogs injured/killed by riding in the back of a pick-up truck?), history of dog laws, real cases and the rulings in those cases (though obviously missing the recent case of Ms. Whipple's murder); and sound, common-sense advice whether it is written in the law or not.
For the sake of the dogs and the people who own or are around them, I hope everybody will read this book.

Entertainment Law in a Nutshell (Nutshell Series) Review

Entertainment Law in a Nutshell (Nutshell Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sorry, I can't agree with the previous rave review.
The book focuses mainly on the movie, TV and music industries. Sports, theater, and, for the most part publishing and electronic gaming are ignored (though of course some focus is to be expected in such a short book). The point of view tends to be that of an attorney representing talent, rather than representing a producer, a studio, an investor, etc.
Prof. Burr's choice of emphasis is odd in many places. For example, she spends 10 pages discussing the privileges and perils of celebrity. Aside from mentioning that Kobe Bryant, Robert Blake and others have been involved in criminal cases, there isn't any mention of legal issues; it's more like a rather tame piece of tabloid journalism. As a result, it seems as if chunks of her book are intended for a popular audience, rather than the typical Nutshell audience of law students or practicing attorneys.
The legal content is very haphazard. If you weren't aware of guild agreements or music performance rights societies, you can learn about them in this book. Prof. Burr introduces some collateral topics such as bankruptcy and trusts and estates law when discussing how entertainers squander their wealth (though to be accurate, she discusses celebrity bankruptcies, rather than bankruptcy law).
On the other hand, entertainment finance and the related securities and corporate law issues never are mentioned. Yet movie lawyers, at least in L.A., actually tend to be quite sophisticated about these topics. Completion bonds aren't discussed at all. TV syndication is mentioned only in passing.
The rights of publicity and privacy are discussed only in the context of celebrities - though they apply to ordinary folks too. If you're buying someone's "life rights", or want to shoot a documentary or publish an interview, you might not know from this text that you need to worry about these subjects.
(In addition, the description of the Eastwood v. Superior Court case (Calif. Court of Appeal 1983) concerning the "right of publicity" is slightly misleading. This right is characterized as a "property interest ... grounded in state staututes, common law, and the federal unfair competition act" (p. 288). In California, the common law right is a component of the right of privacy and is definitely NOT a property interest. Nor is the original California statutory right (Civil Code Sec. 3344) a property right, as the heirs of Bela Lugosi found in a famous case. After that decision, the California legislature passed Civil Code Sec. 3344.1, relating to knowing violations of the right of publicity of a deceased person; it is only this stautory right that is a property right.)
The chapter on entertainment contracts is especially scattered. The movie section has a good discussion of case law concerning "pay or play" provisions, but then jumps around. There's a long discussion of publishing contracts, though the publishing industry isn't mentioned anywhere else in the book. The concept of "turnaround" - one of the great IP inventions of entertainment lawyers - is mentioned only tangentially (as a writer's right of reacquisition) and in a different part of the book; you'll never find it in the scanty index. Generally, contracts are discussed in terms of case law, rather than in terms of the documentation customary in typical deals. This point of view may be helpful for litigators, but definitely isn't a deal lawyer perspective.
A last chapter on globalization mentions piracy in Thailand ca. 1992, but has nary a mention of China (book was written in 2004). Localization, local content requirements and international distribution issues aren't addressed at all.
The book is also marred by bad proofreading and bad editing, with chunks of text being repeated verbatim within a few pages of each other (e.g., compare p. 227 with p. 244, and p. 246 with p. 247). In lieu of this book, I'd recommend you consult a "legal issues for laypeople" type of book that focuses on the particular industry you're interested in, such as Mark Litwak's books or Erickson et al. for the movie business.

A basic but comprehensive survey of entertainment law, this Nutshell gives a big picture overview of the intellectual property, contract, publicity, estate planning, and First Amendment issues that contribute to the field. Professor Burr also addresses specific legal issues that arise in the film, music, and television industries, including discussion of the rise of reality television. This Nutshell can be assigned as a secondary text to accompany any entertainment law casebook, as the primary text for a seminar, or as background information for someone requiring an overview.

I have found this book to be an invaluble asset as I have brought my idea through the patent process, and especially now as I am beginning to market it.From patent searching to explaining the nuts and bolts of the entire patent process I cannot say enough about how well it is written. As well, I have come to the conclusion that without reading this book I certainly would not have known how to REALLY go about getting my product to market! It is written in easy to understand language explaining the do's and don'ts of the entire process. I found the information given about how to detect and avoid the scam artist involved in the invention industry especially interesting. The companion "frompatenttoprofit.com" website was very useful in this regard. What I found most valuable about this read was how well the author details how to bring a product to market with a minimum of resources being spent. An acquaintence of mine so far has poured over $200,000 into his invention with no results. If he only would have read this book first, he would have known how to avoid such risk!

As a mid-level associate at a large international law firm, I strongly recommend this book to anyone trying to get the law firm job you want, whether you are a prospective or current law student or a recent graduate. I did not attend a top 10 law school, nor was I at the top of my class when interviewing for a summer associate position. As a result, my prospects of getting the big law job I wanted boiled down to my ability to truly nail my job interview. In the end, I was fortunate enough to succeed, but only after I learned the hard way from all the interviewing mistakes I had made along the way. If I had had this book when I interviewed, I know I would have received a lot more offers than I ended up getting. It is an excellent toolkit for selling and distinguishing yourself in the best way possible, which these days will prove more important than ever -- Ivy League or not.

Corporations control one's window to the rest of the world. "Virtual Freedom: Net Neutrality and Free Speech in the Internet Age" discusses net neutrality and the threats to it, and why readers should care. Criticizing the recent changes that have threatened the upholding of net neutrality and how a possible repeal of it could do untold damage to America's economic and social ideals, "Virtual Freedom" is an intriguing and highly recommended read that is well worth considering for anyone concerned with the freedom of the internet.

Communications giants like Google, Comcast, and AT&T enjoy increasingly unchecked control over speech. As providers of broadband access and Internet search engines, they can control online expression. Their online content restrictions-from obstructing e-mail to censoring cablecasts-are considered legal because of recent changes in free speech law.In this book, Dawn Nunziato criticizes recent changes in free speech law in which only the government need refrain from censoring speech, while companies are permitted to self-regulate. By enabling Internet providers to exercise control over content, the Supreme Court and the FCC have failed to protect the public's right to access a broad diversity of content. Nunziato argues that regulation is necessary to ensure the free flow of information and to render the First Amendment meaningful in the twenty-first century. This book offers an urgent call to action, recommending immediate steps to preserve our free speech rights online.

Legal Aspects of Managing Technology Review

Call this book Release 2.0! It's a fine upgrade from Prof. Burgunder's prior release.
With the growth in the internet and the advent of business method patents, interest in patent, trademark and copyright issues has surged to new heights. Awareness and integration of these legal aspects into our management of technology is absolutely vital for the future.
I practice law. Specifically, I work on intellectual property matters. I am also building two websites. As a result, I am keen on staying on top of my field. Professor Burgunder's new treatise is an important addition to the literature in this field. He writes in an accessible manner: open to students, interested people and legal practitioners alike. In addition, the arrangement of the book is well thought-out: you don't have to read or study it from the first chapter. Depending on your familiarity with this field, you can select topics and areas to review or you can build a college course around the book.
I was also delighted to see that Dr. Burgunder has been intelligent in the use of a web site to keep the book current.
If you are interested in technology and legal issues, this is a great book to help you! I recommend it heartily.

I have a youngster who is very interested in a career in music. He is still in high school and is currently in a band locally. None of the group in the band seem to have any idea of how to get it organized, or what they need to do to succeed. I read this book and it explains everything someone totally naive would need to know about the music business. It gives you more information than you can imagine, and it certainly let me help him see how complicated trying to become successful in a band can be. I found the book very easy to read, and lots of information.

Patent Pending in 24 Hours Review

Patent Pending in 24 Hours

I'm a budding inventor who wanted to protection for a children's toy I invented recently. Using this book, I filed a patent application in about 15 hours.
To understand the value of this book, you need to understand that there are two types of patent applications.
The first is a Provisional Patent Application (PPA) which is an informal patent application that simply establishes a filing date and allows you to legally use "patent pending" for 1 year, when sharing your invention with others and testing its marketability. The second is a Regular Patent Application (RPA). This is a formal application at which the Patent Office looks closely and can result in patent protection for the next 20 years if it's granted. The PPA costs $100 for most, and the RPA costs thousands upon thousands.
This book helps you file a Provisional Patent Application (PPA).
I found it to be very clear, and told me what I had to do. It assumes you know nothing. I found it's example illustrations very helpful as I made up drawings, and particularly helpful was how to navigate the US Patent and Trademark Office site to download and fill out applications. It also gave some good tips for patent searching. The sample PPA, a doll that has "light-up" tears, gave me a good idea how to write the PPA.
I did find, however, that the author constantly uses phrases like "For more information, see my book "Patent it Yourself" which I found a little frustrating. I ended up finding a copy of Patent It Yourself in the library to get some of my questions answered.
Also, some foreign offices require information that is not explained in Patent Pending in 24 Hours (at least one "claim"), so I had to use Patent It Yourself to get this information, and include it in my PPA, so in this respect, Patent Pending in 24 Hours is not complete if you want international protection eventually.
I recommend that you get both Patent It Yourself and Patent Pending in 24 hours if you want all your questions answered. They both contain information not found in the other.

I don't know why I'm telling you about this great book. If you're one of my competitors, you're going to read this review, probably buy the book, learn all the secrets on how to get partnerships with Fortune 500 companies, and then go after all the deals I'm about to close.
This book tells you step by step how to analyze your business product strengths, how to figure out who would be your ideal partnership targets, and then how to go out and get them. The only thing that Ron Kunitzky doesn't include is a silver platter.
Whether you are running a big, medium sized or small business, there is priceless information in every chapter of this book that will lead to more sales and profits. It took me over a week to read this thing. After every page I would have to stop and write down another idea on how I could use Kunitzky's principles to further my business plan.
One second thought, do me a favor. Forget what you just read. This book stunk. The secret to my past business successes is finding new resources like this and then not telling anyone about them. If by some chance I inadvertently succeeded in peaking your curiosity and you happen to buy this book, at least promise me you will keep it to yourself.
