There are a lot of career books that tell you WHAT you are supposed to do to find a job or take your career to the next level. What I really like about Awaken Your Careerpreneur is that Alexia Vernon helps you figure out WHO you want to be in your career and to customize all of her tips for your specific purpose. Her stories are funny and relevant and what she calls SUCCESSwork, interactive coaching exercises, really help you stay on track. It would have been great to have read this book 20 years ago so I highly recommend it for college students and recent grads. Although those who are switching careers, want to start a business, or simply want to goal set for bigger and better things will also find it really valuable.

Hardcore Inventing: Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit From Your Inventions Review

Hardcore Inventing: Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit From Your Inventions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

When I cruise through B&N and spot a book that might be helpful to my SCORE-dot-org clients I usually take the necessary steps to write a book review for it. These days I am being a little more particular as to what I will review since I am tiring of the activity. But I could not let this book slide by. In my humbe opinion it is a great companion book to Invent Yourself Rich: 16 Secrets for Creating Million-Dollar Inventions which I read and wrote a review for a few years back.
The instant book has five parts broken into twenty chapters and three appendices as follows:
I. Invent (1-8)
II. Protect (9-11)
III. Promote (12-14)
IV. Profit (15-20)
V. Appendices (A-C)
0. Introduction
1. Success story - The Rescue Streamer Technology
2. Identifying & solving the problem
3. How nature inspired my inventions
4. Scour your brain
5. Making your idea a reality: Inventor's logs, prototypes, & marketing evaluations
6. Build a show prototype
7. Name your invention
8. Checklist - Is your idea feasible, marketable & financially viable?
9. Safeguard your intellectual property - Paranoia can be good
10. Step-by-step guide from disclosure to patent - Etch it in stone
11. Alernatives to utility patents
12. Get your invention out there
13. Find investors: Targeted strikes & mobilizing the troops
14. Protect yourself from fraudulent promotion companies
15. Licening
16. Manufacturing
17. Marketing
18. The home entrepreneur - Bottom-feeding
19. Venture Capitalists & angel investors
20. Critical crossroads
A. Useful Web sites
B. Suggested reading
C. Sample agreements & letters
The book is not written by an attorney nor a business consultant. It's written by an inventor who wants to share his experiences in getting his invention (Rescue Streamer Technology) patented and profitable. He's also probably written it as a marketing tool for his invention. If I had not read the book, then I would never have heard of his invention.
This book is probably more detailed and a little bit more informative than the book I read a few years back. It gives another perspective - so I highly recommend anyone interested in the subject get both books and become very informed on the topic. 5 stars!

Distinctive Design: A Practical Guide to a Useful, Beautiful Web Review

Distinctive Design: A Practical Guide to a Useful, Beautiful Web
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having had my own website for a few years I am always looking for ways to improve it by making it more user friendly and beautiful to visit at the same time. I was hoping to gain some insight into "distinctive design" by reading this book. Unfortunately, I did not find anything useful for my needs.
Much of the book read as a textbook based on theory, rather than application. After reading the table of contents I couldn't wait to read each chapter...expecting to read the book and come away with all sorts of practical ways to improve my site. Instead I found that most theories discussed were common sense, or not explored to the depth I would have liked. I also found that the examples and even the graphics contained within the book were rudimentary.
I would only recommend this book for someone who is starting to design websites and has more technical experience rather than design experience. This will not teach you how to create good design, just what is considered to be good design in theory.
Distinctive Design was not at all what I was expecting and frankly I came away with absolutely nothing that I felt would improve my own site. It may be great for a classroom discussion, but not for real world application in my opinion.

Professional Web Design: Techniques and Templates Review

Professional Web Design: Techniques and Templates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the classroom, when I teach web design, unless the courseware comes with templates the students spend the time creating pages from scratch. While this is worthwhile for novices, there are times when you need templates for some web projects.

In this book the authors has given you over 200 HTML templates, which are on the cd-rom, to work with. By following along with the book you'll end up creating over 50 pages. You find yourself working with frames, forms, tables, graphics and CSS.

The book should have had the design outputs in color to allow you to be able to see what the outcome would like. I did like the 3 case studies included, which take you from a basic web page to a very advanced design layout.

The cd-rom included trial version of Photoshop, FireWorks, Flash and HomeSite all of which have newer versions out and should be updated for the next edition. I found the JavaScript Cook to be a very handy and useful tool for creating scripts without an in depth knowledge of the coding techniques.

The other handy utility included in the HTML/CSS Developer's resource guide, which makes the creation of CSS easier. With all the helpful tool and tricks the book is certainly a welcome addition to my HTML/Web Design library. Overall a very good value for the money.

Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (Missing Manuals) (English and English Edition) Review

Creating a Website: The Missing Manual (Missing Manuals) (English and English Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the most complete all-in-one manual on website development I have ever read. I was amazed on the amount of information covered in this book, it is almost overwhelming. But, if you stick it out, the end result will be a thorough foundation on website development, community building and, if you wanted to, use your new found knowledge and skills to make money on the web. This book is written, like the title states, in a manual-like style, mixed with step-by-step solutions, simple examples and detailed explanations. And If that wasn't enough already, in the appendix there is a HTML5 reference, and a bunch of website links, grouped by chapters to further extend your knowledge in each subject. I found this book easy to read and understand which is one of the main reasons why I liked it so much. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to start a career in web design or development as it will give them a rock-solid foundation on how things work and fit all together. I would also recommend this book to small business owners, or marketing managers as it will give them a complete understanding of the whole development process so they can intelligently discuss their next web project with prospective designers without their eyes glazing over from lack of knowledge. Finally, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone else, who, maybe just wants to start a blog, or make a webpage, or learn how to use stylesheets or javascript in an already existing website -- this is the book for you because you will accomplish that in just a chapter or two and come out ahead with a great reference manual to boot.

Design and Launch an Online Web Design Business in a Week (Clickstarts)

There's is simply no way anyone who "learns" to build a web design business site in one week can know anything about web design. Such an individual won't even have a clue as to how much he is screwing over his clients by providing web sites that need to be scrapped and replaced by again paying designers who know what they're doing to do things the way they should have been done the first time. Yeah, that never gets old...
