While I wish I'd been given much of the candid, honest and caring advice this book offers back when I began my author journey, I have found I still very much enjoy this book. When I'm getting a little down, I can pick this up and be reminded why I love what I do.

There are a lot of career books that tell you WHAT you are supposed to do to find a job or take your career to the next level. What I really like about Awaken Your Careerpreneur is that Alexia Vernon helps you figure out WHO you want to be in your career and to customize all of her tips for your specific purpose. Her stories are funny and relevant and what she calls SUCCESSwork, interactive coaching exercises, really help you stay on track. It would have been great to have read this book 20 years ago so I highly recommend it for college students and recent grads. Although those who are switching careers, want to start a business, or simply want to goal set for bigger and better things will also find it really valuable.

Android for Work: Productivity for Professionals

The book, Android for Work, covers the essential tools needed to effectively use your Android phone for both business and casual users. It shows how to use each of the major areas that are included in all of the major Android phones from email to GPS maps to business productivity applications and everything in between. The books is aimed at the business professional but has application to every user. It's certainly a must-read for the professional but also has useful information for every user showing how to setup the phone and describing many, many useful downloaded apps for all users. The bottom line is that I absolutely loved the book. I have had my Nexus One phone since the first hour it was offered by Google but never used it to it's full capability until I read this book. I kept my phone next to me as I read it and found I was picking up the phone constantly to adjust it's settings or to download the apps that were recommended by Ms. Karch. I have never felt more in control of a personal productivity device before. I couldn't recomend this book more for any professional or casual user who wants to expand their use and enjoyment of their Android phone.

Ordinary People Can Achieve the Extraordinary Review

Ordinary People Can Achieve the Extraordinary

A lot of the self help literature it seems needs to be the right message for you at the time you need to hear it. I guess it wasn't my time for this book. It sounded interesting and engaging but didn't really deliver to my liking on meaty content. I felt like I was attending a rally and getting all pumped up and then big let down, i.e. lotsa sugar, no nutritional value.

Living Cheap & Loving It, Tomatoes in the Flower Bed Review

Living Cheap and Loving It, Tomatoes in the Flower Bed

Living Cheap and Loving It, tomatoes in the flower bed
What a perfect book for these financially troubled times.
The author, Carrol Wolverton along with several contibutors, has written a simple cost cutting handbook with tips from A to Z.
She gives information about everyday household, money saving ventures-- from energy saving light bulbs to using the microwave to cut down on the energy used to cook your food.
Did you know that you can save energy by using the right size burner for the size of your pan?
I was surprised that so many people would throw out a shirt or blouse that has a missing button, when there is a perfectly good button sewn onto the hem, just waiting to be sewn on.
The author suggests washing small batches of clothes or dishes by hand.
Anything you can provide for yourself, from gardening to home improvement will cut your cost of living and make a smaller impact on the environment.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time (3rd Edition) Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time (3rd Edition)
Average Reviews:

I just finished the 3rd edition of MYT, and was quite impressed. I haven't seen the first two editions, but this one certainly fills the bill, if you're looking for solutions to time-pressure problems. That the book is funny, is a real bonus. It makes it easier to get through every chapter. I found the section found "Thinking Your Way Out of Timetraps" to be the best part of the book. After all, much of what we face on a daily basis is self-induced. You can blame your boss, you can blame other people, but when you really get honest with yourself, as you learn in the book, most of the time pressure you feel is a result of your own activities and beliefs. Do yourself a favor and get this book.

Fierce Leadership: A Bold Alternative to the Worst "Best" Practices of Business Today Review

Fierce Leadership: A Bold Alternative to the Worst Best Practices of Business Today
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are fan of previous books in this type of "go against the grain" leadership genre - books like "First, Break All the Rules," "Made to Stick," "Predictably Irrational," "Slack," "The Starfish and the Spider," "Leaders," or "Stewardship," or even "Working with Emotional Intelligence" - you will not find much new here. Or at least I didn't.
If you are a big fan of benchmarking and going out to find "best practices" and then figuring out your strategy, basing your plans on what everyone else is doing versus what of that you can afford, this is THE book for you. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure you're going to be reading this review as another "best practices" book probably came out while I was writing this review and like moths to the flame, you've headed away to that glittering, glowing jewel....
For there rest of us, here is the ground that Susan Scott covers:
1. Moving away from 360-degree anonymous feedback to "365" days a year of face-to-face feedback
2. Hiring for smarts and emotional intelligence rather than just smarts
3. Modeling accountability and responsibility, not just putting them in a corporate ethics "agreement" required of all employees to sign
4. Moving away from employee "team-building" to actually being involved and supportive with your colleagues and your teams
5. Focusing on collaborating with your customers to create new products, better service, and better profits
6. Being transparent - not just in your decision-making and policies, but in getting feedback and input from your employees and your customers to acknowledge mistakes, change strategic directions, and so on
As you can see, if you're familiar with the list of books I noted at the beginning of this review, then "Fierce Leadership" is really just a regurgitation of those themes with Ms. Scott's personal take on them, her experiences, and her suggestions on steps to take in order adopt these themes.
And it is the latter that I believe is the real strength of this book - and where Ms. Scott shines - her step-by-step exercises and activities. There is little doubt that, for instance, by following her advice in Chapter 2 on hiring for smarts and emotional intelligence, you should get better employees and be a better leader.
I caution you to remember that 9 times out of 10, putting all of this into play is not just up to you. There's a whole host of other folks who are involved in implementing any one of these themes. And that's where we should all be cognizant that Ms. Scott is also a consultant, and can conveniently be brought in to help you get everyone in your organization on board.
Don't let this latter point detract from the book - just recognize that adopting these themes will require you to go against the grain, something that takes more than 306 pages of common sense.
To summarize, if you are unfamiliar with the list of resources I cited at the beginning of this review, then get "Fierce Leadership" - it will get you thinking in a new direction. If you've read many or all of the above, you'll not find much new here but may see Ms. Scott's book as a well-needed reinforcement on your journey to better business practices, better leadership, and better profit.
