Middle-Class Lifeboat: Careers and Life Choices for Navigating a Changing Economy Review

Middle-Class Lifeboat: Careers and Life Choices for Navigating a Changing Economy
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I'm extremely worried about my career in this economy. (I'm a Hair Salon Owner and a Stylist) I've been doing this for a long time and I love it. But we have been hit by this economy so hard that I thought I would get this book to prepare for hard times. Get a 2nd job. Most of the Careers listed aren't safe or feasable. I have a Massage Therapist working for me and also network with 5 others and they are taking 2nd and 3rd jobs to even bring home any money. This is a luxury for people right now. Mobile services! Again, most people can't afford a Personal Shopper; an Errand Service. Cleaning Services are being cut back when it is something you can do yourself. A few years ago, these were good, (just good) suggestions. Times have changed and people are looking for real ways to survive. I think they needed to update the information and really think about people that are living pay check to pay check. Most of these people are who we'd be marketing to. If they are living pay check to pay check then a massage, a haircut, personal shoppers, errand services, personal chefs, cleaning services, interior decorating, etc. will not be their sweet spot. They are going to buy the necessities and that is about it. I would do your own research, because this info is too old to deal with these economic conditions.

eBay Quick Steps
A book review by Frank Dobrowolski
May 12, 2005
by Carole Matthews & John Cronan
Published by McGraw-Hill/Osborne
ISBN 0-07-225506-4 2004 240 pages
List price: $16.99 On Amazon: $11.55 +S/H
This is a short book, with wide margins and many vivid color illustrations and tables. As a result it is a quick read - per its title. It has a simple, direct approach which works well for eBay beginners and novices. It also contains some information that likely would help advanced users.
I like the illustrated, annotated Walk through of an eBay Transaction
1.Prospective seller registers to sell an item on eBay
2.Takes photos of object to sell and writes a description of it
3.Enters the description, photos, payment terms, shipping information, and other supporting material into eBay's auction selling form
4.Track the item as buyers start bidding on it
5.The buyer registers to participate in the auction
6.Buyer finds the item and bids on it
7.Buyer wins the auction and connects with seller to verify the details and the buyer pays the seller
8.Seller sends the package per the shipping terms specified
9.Buyer receives the item
10.Buyer and Seller provide feedback about each other in this transaction.
The Find Your Way around eBay chapter begins with a page-filling illustration that is typical of this book. The eBay home page is shown and eight areas are picked with a comment on each. The chapter continues with more large figures and sidebar "Tips" and "notes".
One page is filled with a table that lists the type of auction, gives a description and notes requirements. For example:
*Auction - Buy It Now [Fixed Price]
*Description - Offers the item for a given price and there is no auction
*Requirement - Seller must have a feedback rating of at least 30 and be a registered user for at least 14 days of be ID Verified.
The guidance on ID Verified contains 11 steps and one figure, one Note and one Tip.
The following chapters are similarly presented in easy to follow text with numerous colorful illustration, tables and sidebars. Chapter 9 presents information I have not seen this in other books on eBay and it is done well here. The Chapter
has sections entitled
*Detect and Report Account theft
*Use Buyer Fraud-Protection Measures
*File a Fraud Alert
*Set up a Bidder Alert
*Block Bidders or Buyers
*Report Unwelcome Buyers
*Use Additional Resources
a.Security Center
b.Law Enforcement & Other Resources
This may be the best book on eBay I have seen for beginners and novices in using eBay. Advanced users probably would find some information that they could use.

The Secrets to Succeeding in Network Marketing Offline and Online: How To Achieve Financial Success Selling Network Marketing Products And Services
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Street's "Network Marketing" picks up speed after a slow start and becomes the quintessential guide to one-on-one sales in the modern marketplace. A significant portion of "Network Marketing" focuses on distinguishing network marketing from pyramid schemes, franchising and other sales methods. Street's focus on successful companies like Amway and Mary Kay contrasts with the illegalities of pyramid schemes and the costs of business franchising. Street's explanation of direct sales history is a welcome primer since newcomers to direct sales and network marketing are the target market for this book.
Street's greatest virtue in "Network Marketing" is his patient explanation of sales basics like building a home office. The average reader will be brought to speed on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone, pay-per-click advertising and developing effective websites. While other books offer this information without context, "Network Marketing" offers plenty of examples to show the evolution of network marketing in the Internet Age. If case studies on DirectTrack, Commission Junction and Amway were left on the editor's table, "Network Marketing" could not have achieved its potential.

What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It: The Definitive Guide to Product Sourcing for eBay and Beyond Review

What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It: The Definitive Guide to Product Sourcing for eBay and Beyond
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Upon first reading "What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It," authors Lisa Suttora and Chris Malta seem genuine in their efforts to provide the eBay seller with legitimate sources for items to sell on this extremely competitive marketplace. It isn't apparent until you are well into the book, that the ulterior motive behind it all, is to drive you to the two web sites owned by the authors. At first, I was so impressed with the information that I was receiving, that it didn't bother me that I might have to sign up for both websites in order to actually utilize the information in the book. After all, Chris Malta and Lisa Suttora are two of only a hand full of certified eBay providers. How could I possibly go wrong by signing up for their services.
First, I signed up for Chris Malta's, "Drop Ship Source Directory," at a one time cost of $69. While I have no question that Chris is an honest guy, and makes an all out effort to provide subscriber's with a plethora of wholesale distributors that are willing to drop ship, it soon becomes apparent that it is virtually impossible to find any drop shippers that can provide you with competitive enough pricing to make listing the product on eBay a profitable endeavor. After literally spending weeks looking through the entire list of drop shippers, and comparing closed auction prices on eBay, I have come to the conclusion that either drop shipping is not the way to run an eBay business, or the list of drop shippers that Chris Malta supplies is inadequate to help the eBay seller who wishes to use this method to run their eBay business. The web site is very difficult and time consuming to maneuver, and unless you have the patience to spend months searching for the niche drop shipper that will enable you to make money on eBay, I would stay away from this product. Malta also offers other wholesale product sourcing databases, but these are at extra cost. He now admits that it is best to use a combination of drop shippers and light bulk wholesalers when selling on eBay, however for many years, his Drop Ship Source Directory was touted by Malta as being "the source", for making a great living on eBay. Sorry Chris, but it no longer works.
As for Lisa Suttora, I got sucked into signing up for her web site, "Whatdoisell.com, as well. While she provides a ton of information on how to go about selling on eBay, when it came down to actually researching her list of wholesale suppliers, I ran into the same quandary. I compared wholesale prices from product sources on her web site with prices for closed eBay auctions. In all cases, the prices for closed eBay auctions were either lower than what I could have purchased the items for, using her list of wholesalers, or the items had not sold at all. I canceled my $19.97 monthly subscription, as I found it to be useless. In addition, and even more troubling was the fact that I emailed Lisa Suttora several weeks before signing up to her web site subscription. I had a long list of questions and concerns. When I didn't hear back, I contacted one of her employees and asked if she had received my email. Her answer was an emphatic yes, however Lisa never bothered to get back to me. Rude behavior, to say the least.
So, in review, there will be those who think this book is great, however, I am not one of them. Upon reading the book, if you are willing to look between the lines, you will discover that what you are being told is nothing more than an advertisement for the authors goods. If you follow up and purchase the goods, as I did, you will most likely be extremely disappointed with the results.

If you're completely clueless to running your own home-based business, this is a great beginner (hence the title "for Dummies"). I found the book to work best when you already have an idea for your business. As with similar books, it's great to have a general idea of what type of business you'd like to pursue before reading the book; it will help you better shape your idea.
The book did spend a lot of time talking about how to deal with family problems, creating a quiet workspace, setting work hours and how to get through a project when you have no desire. While some people might find this beneficial, it read like "filler" to me.
All in all, though, it's worth checking out.

This book is expensive - is making the book sellers and publishers rich. This is another example of schools very frequently requiring new versions of a book, with just a few changes, to make it seem as if you MUST purchase the newest version, while an older, dicounted version would suit you just as well.
My shool did not have any used books for sale. The school was charging @$200.00 plus, I paid @$150.00 here, and the last version sold here for @ $25.00! If you are considering purchasing this book, look for an older version.
The book does have valuable information for people who are starting a new business.

Work at Home Now: The No-nonsense Guide to Finding Your Perfect Home-based Job, Avoiding Scams, and Making a Great Living
Average Reviews:

I've been a long-time fan of the authors' website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I've read lots of "work at home" books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst's and Haaren's new book doesn't dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know - where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they've checked out every one of the websites, plus they've organized the listing into job types (they've included categories such as "merchandiser" and "notary" that are more "work FROM home). They've even included a category of websites for work in the "adult" industry (if you're so inclined)!
The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.
All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

This book is excellent because it addresses unrealistic assumptions. After 18 years in the corporate world, I have seen many mistakes entrepreneurs tend to make. This book is perfect for a home-based business and correctly lays out all the steps to writing a detailed business plan. Also, if you need to obtain a bank loan, this guide will help you write a business plan that will put you a step ahead of many others seeking the same money. I believe bankers tend judge entrepreneurs by their ideas, their ability, and the reasonableness of their assumptions. Aggressive business plan assumptions raise significant doubts in the minds of bankers. Very realistic advice and a must-read before starting your business.

I've already made money from Tory's awesome advice in two areas: adding
AdSense to my website which brings me money every month and with Alpine
Access, which I loooove. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make some money at home.

Escape the cube. Ditch the commute. It's not just a dream anymore. Many people already spend 12 hours a day getting to work, working, getting home from work. Here's some good news: thanks to advances in technology, acceptance of outsourcing, the trend towards corporate flextime, and other factors, working from home is easier than ever. Good Morning America's Workplace Contributor Tory Johnson and consumer advocate Robyn Freedman Spizman tell readers exactly how to turn today's cultural change to their advantage without giving up an income. Specific business plans will teach them how to: • Take their current position home • Find a new company whose policies will allow them to work from home • Reseach a product they believe in, and sell it from home • Start their own business, doing something they love, for a minimal initial investment With real-life stories, a step-by-step plan, resource guides, and lists of scams to avoid, this is the book that will help readers finally make the leap––and show them that they don't have to give up their family, creativity, or peace of mind to earn a decent salary.

Probably the best $ you can spend to prevent making real costly mistakes...
