Me Paradox: Gain the Social Business Edge Review

Me Paradox: Gain the Social Business Edge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Me Paradox is the right blend of advice and theory. It is an inspirational book for those seeking to get ahead in business. At times, the book is light and quick, with practical advice for excelling. It includes charts and practice examples to help guide you towards achieving your goals. But Me Paradox is also a philosophical work that contemplates the future of the business world as influenced by social media and the way it has been perceived and embraced. While the book is light and quick at times, it doesn't fail to delve into complicated ideas. And when it does delve, it does so in a clear and concise way.
The title Me Paradox refers to author Chae J. Pak's innovative idea for approaching social business. It is an idea that is hard to explain, but not as hard to understand once you read the book, and it has to do with putting others before yourself so that you, yourself, see gains. Pak has written from a wealth of experience and a wide breadth of research. His ideas are insightful, useful, and valuable to a world that is becoming as much about online communication as about in-person communication.

By helping readers manage their online reputations, Me Paradox: Gain the Social Business Edge illustrates over 50 key activities that help them earn more money, more autonomy, more respect, more knowledge, more opportunities, and all things that differentiate their careers. Published by New World Press, Me Paradox uses a new concept - the Paradox of Me - to help readers realize that 'one single action has infinite ramifications." As a paradox, the concept of the Me Paradox avoids strict definition. Instead, it is an underlying theme in the book that helps guide readers to their ultimate ends: more fulfilling successes.Roughly, the paradox is about seeing ourselves as a composite of how others are connected to us. If this sounds a little too complicated, that's OK; Me Paradox helps readers gain the social business edge by taking complex and abstract ideas, and putting them into easy-to-read, workable notions. As an example, the Online Reputation Lifecycle breaks down aspects of online social interaction into its parts: engagement, presence, and networks. The book also provides real-life examples, best practices reviews, and personal assessment exercises to give readers hands-on references about themselves and their online practices.Me Paradox is the first definitive book on social business using online reputation management and the catalyst that activates regard. The book is unique in that it isn't as concerned about presenting absolute truths as it is about exploring causes and effects. An example of this is how the book details how information isn't always enough; information can become knowledge, which can then become wisdom, both of which are even more valuable than information alone. The book is real and useful, and it gives the power of action over to the reader - you don't have to live by the book, but if you take its suggestions to heart, you may reap big benefits.Me Paradox is brave enough to tackle abstract ideas, like the Economy of Regard, gift giving and social capital. And it covers these ideas clearly, alongside practical, inspirational advice for managing yourself in the online social territory ' all in the name of your success.

A wonderful book with lots of great first-person advice, tips, and insight for starting a career in a variety of different non-research positions which are still science-oriented. The book is conveniently divided into sections (intellectual property-related jobs, computer-related jobs, etc.). I highly recommend it for anyone who is exploring career options afer a degree in chemistry. Most of the people profiled in the book have done graduate-level research, so I think it's especially insightful for those with advanced degrees in chemistry (or related fields).

First of all, its hard to believe that this book costs $20 - there's not enough information here to justify the price tag. Alright, this book was just released so the price might change within some time and what won't change is this...
Plenty of it is common sense, unfortunately. If you use your head, some of this stuff should not be new to you. Yes, there are online resources mentioned throughout the book, but the only new one to me is JibberJobber.
Maybe its good for beginners, but its not very useful if you ever went through an online search before.

First review: March 13, 2010
Now, September 12, 2011, 18 months later...
If you are truly serious about finding a new career opportunity, this book is required reading. Don't do another thing at all in your job search until you have this book in your hands and read it. It is better that you do nothing at all than to do something without David Perry's guidance, coaching, wisdom and insight.
Do you want a larger paycheck sooner rather than later? If so, invest in yourself. Buy this book. Not buying it will probably cost you thousands of dollars. Buying it will cost you what two Starbucks coffees would cost you. If you had the opportunity to buy David Perry a Starbucks, sit down with him for 3 hours and pick his brain, I bet you would do it. That is what you are doing here...having a "virtual cup of coffee" with the best in the business in job hunting. But it gets even better...with his book you have all of the notes from that meeting, in writing, to review and use over and over again.
So why was I eagerly waiting for the release of "Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0?"
I am a "headhunter." I do not call myself a recruiter. I do not call myself an "executive search" consultant. I PLACE PEOPLE into COMPANIES. I help companies "hire to win." I am 100% commissioned in what I do. If I do NOT place my candidate into an open position, I don't get paid. I don't eat! I am in the JOB HUNT BATTLE EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE!
Thus, what I do MUST WORK! All too many job hunting books are written by HR professionals and career counselors who will get their salary or get their "career counseling consulting fee" regardless of whether you get hired or not.
SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH GUERRILLA 3.0?? In one word, "EVERYTHING"!
I started my "headhunting" business in 2003. I was very good at it. In 2005, I saw Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters in the book store. I read the bio and learned that David Perry is a "recruiter" so I figured I would buy a copy and peruse it. After just a few pages, I was highlighting, paper clipping, taking notes and devouring the book. The very next day I was in the office reshaping the way I did business.
*I learned how to write powerful cover letters and send them to my clients on my candidate's behalf
*I honed my voice mail scripts
*I started role playing mock interviews with the candidates I presented
*...and the list could go on...
The main point is I learned how to truly differentiate myself as a recruiter. I learned how to be a "guerrilla" and that is when I can say I went from being a recruiter to being a "headhunter." More importantly, I learned how to powerfully differentiate the candidates I represented so THAT THEY WOULD GET HIRED!!! And they did. I was a top 200 recruiter in the MRI Network out of over 8000 recruiters for 3 years in a row. GUERRILLA WORKS for getting hired.
In 2009, I started building my firm and started hiring people to work for me. The first book I went to buy for training my new people was Guerrilla and to my dismay, it was "out of print." I panicked. But with a few clicks, I quickly discovered that, in just another few weeks, Guerrilla 2.0 was coming out. I pre-ordered 7 copies.
When the book landed in my office, we all did a deep dive. That year our entire recruiting firm, with rookies, billed close to a million dollars by PLACING PEOPLE.
So you can see why I couldn't wait to read 3.0.
David teaches you HOW TO PLACE YOURSELF...HOW TO RISE ABOVE YOUR COMPETITION AND WIN THE JOB YOU WANT instead of letting it go to someone else.
If you get 3.0 and don't get anything from it, I want to know why. (You can find it under my profile on LinkedIn.)
Yes, his methods are different. Yes, they can be scary. Yes, you initially will be nervous using them. Guess what!? I have made money using them and you will too....HOW? You will get hired and get your paycheck!!
And here is the best part...he tells you exactly what to do. You aren't left guessing. So unless you are retired or planning on retiring this year, you need this book. Whether you are an introvert, extrovert, salesperson, engineer, manager, accountant, lawyer or just graduating from college, this publication is required reading.

I received an special offer for this book via Clickbank. Book was "free" as long as I'd pay postage. A very good deal, I though.
This is a good book. Not great, but worth checking out. I give credit to the author for covering so many aspects of online business in one book. The problem is, there isn't enough space for everything he wants to cover-- at least in detail. It's kind of like being at a buffet, with a lot of choices, but only being able to take a tiny bite. You get an idea of what is available, but don't walk away totally satisfied.
Luckily, I have been studying online marketing for a while. When I read this stuff, I got what he was saying. If this is your first book about online maketing though, or you're looking to "get rich quick", you may end up frustrated as some of the aspects here will likely be too complicated for you to understand since you'll have to "fill in the blanks" yourself. For a beginner, I think something like Laptop Lifestyle - How to Quit Your Job and Make a Good Living on the Internet (Volume 1 - Quick Start Guide to Making Money Online) is a better option, since it moves a little slower and gives step-by-step lists of what you can do to either sell your own products online or make money using affiliate programs.
The best part about this book is that it gives detailed case studies of successful businesses and how they are making money online. There are a lot of ways to make money online and this will get you thinking about how you can find something that works for you.

Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies (For Dummies (Career/Education)) Review

Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies (For Dummies (Career/Education))
Average Reviews:

I am a seasoned IT & Engineering Recruiter with over 15 years experience. I have been through the .Com Boom, the .Com Bust, several recessions, a whole cornucopia of technology births, and the advent of social media as a job-search tool. As a recruiter I know that it just gets harder and harder to find and qualify excellent candidates, for me and for my clients. I use social media daily to find and to qualify candidates. When I present a candidate to my client, I know that the client will go to Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace, or wherever, and take a look at my candidate. And I've seen cases where candidates were presented to clients, who then found those candidates on social networking sites, and for one reason or another, lost interest. Unless you're living in a cave, job-seekers need to understand to what extent they are digitally exposed. Joshua has been working as a social-media/job search/networking guru for a number of years and this book gives job-seekers a crystal clear blue print of what to do and what not to do in order to use social media to help and not hinder their search.

The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated: Expanded and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting-Edge Content.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title and cover draws people in. 4 Hour Work Week, it's too good to be true. Then we read the first couple of pages, maybe the first couple of chapters. The first chapters are the typical motivational, "you can do it" montage. I'm not going to lie, I felt motivated to give this book a try after reading the first part of the book without even knowing what this book is all about. But as I began to get out of the fluff, and actually found myself reading the core subject of the book, I was utterly disappointed. D is for Definition
In this section Ferriss tells us to do an important task: define what you want. And I agree that most of us live through life not knowing what we want; just following the crowd like a herd of sheep. This section was the motivational, make you feel good section. This wasn't the how, it was the why, and it downright made me pumped.
E is for Elimination
Okay, so he basically says to eliminate all the junk in your life. For example: watch less TV, don't check your e-mail 50 times a day, don't look at your phone 100 times a day, don't surf the web 3 hours a day, etc. It's all good advice, nothing too fancy, or new, just plain old, "don't waste your time" advice. So far so good.
A is for automation
This is where I ran in to problems with Tim's method of creating a "4 hour workweek". First he tells us to outsource a big chunk of our lives using a VA (virtual assistant) from India or Shanghai or wherever. Basically a virtual assistant is a person who assist you in everyday task (checking emails, making reservations, doing research for your job that you got hired to do,set up appointments, etc) so basically an online-personal assistant you hire for dirt cheap. So if you are okay with some guy in India knowing your personal information (SSN, bank account number, phobias, any illnesses you might have, problems in life, and many more as Ferriss states) go ahead and outsource the things you can already do yourself to a guy in India you never met. But Ferris says that misuses of sensitive information are rare; well there could be bias behind that statement, but I'm not willing to find out if it's true or not. The irony of oustourcing your life is that you become dependent on your VA. You no longer have the urge to take control of your own life when it comes to paying bills, making reservations, or doing research for your job because your VA does it for you. So that's the paradox: out source your life, but become more dependent on a foreigner. And Ferriss quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson throughout his book as a motivational spice. But it's apparent that he never read "Self Reliance", the cornerstone of Emerson's philosophy. (Tim if you're going to use Emerson's words, how about not making a book that totally contradicts the philosophy of Emerson? Thanks).
A is for automation Pt. 2
Ferriss then goes on to tell us how we can make up to 40,000 dollars a month of automated income (little work). Basically you create a product and sell it. Plain and simple. He tells you to find a market, find the demographics of your product, make a product and sell it. Yup, your average entrepreneurship. It's nothing new, and Ferris is not an expert entrepreneur. He did have a company BrainQuicken which sells "Neural Accelerator" supplements. The site is 99% advertising and 1% scientific: It sells because it's precisely that. And the product that Ferriss started is not something revolutionary, I'll take my 200mg of caffeine before a workout any day than pay 50.00 dollars plus shipping for BrainQuicken. So if you want to make your own product, market it, sell it and make millions of dollars go ahead. Tim tells you exactly how, but what Tim doesn't tell you is that it takes a lot of work in the beginning, a lot more than 4 hours a week.
L is for Liberation
More like L is for not showing up to work, and being cynical. Now I'm against the 9-5 hours of work. I think that human beings are more efficient enough to get things done in a short period of time, and I believe that society is slowly catching on. But here's Tim's idea of "liberation". Escaping the office: not doing your job or worse, not showing up. Killing your job: quit your job. Mini retirement: take a month vacation every 2 months of work (or pattern that works best for you). Filling the Void: filling in the emptiness and the boredom you feel with fun stuff like becoming a horse archer, learning tango, and winning a fight championship by cheating.
So okay, let's say everything goes well: you are making 40,000 dollars a month, you are working no more than 4 hours a week... now what. Even Ferriss says that you will feel a void... well that sucks doesn't it? Why don't you go and talk to your VA about your problems?
Now obviously I'm against Tim's advertising methods, it's misleading. The book only sells because of the hope it gives 9-5 workers that it's possible. Oh, it's possible but unlikely. Tim is no Bil Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, or Clint Eastwood he is nowhere close to them. You see great testimonials from people from Yahoo!, Wired, Silicon Valley, and hell, from Jack Canfield about Tim's book, but not from people like Gates, Jobs, Buffett, Eastwood, or any other highly successful people, why? Because those four know that true success comes from years of hard work, and building lasting relationships with people. Those four know that decreasing your work hours, outsourcing your life, and making a tons of money is not the road to true happiness. Those four people, even if they read this book, will probably throw it in the fire. But for the cynical, "how do I work little and make tons of money" people out there (which is most of the population) this book will initially look like the next Bible. The fact that this book sold well says a lot about our society.
This is a misleading book, there are tons of other great books you can read for true success: Talent is Overrated (no BS way how people become great at what they do), 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (classic), and How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing with People... to name a few. Very few will read this review before buying, and more copies of this book will sell due to the cynical and lazy nature of people. Don't be one of those people, don't buy this book.

It has EVERYTHING you need to write one of the best possible Resumes, to help you get hired. Just the sample Resumes alone are worth the price of the book.
If you can only afford one book for your job search, then this should be that book-Without the best Resume, you may not even get the interview. And of course if you get the interview, read "Acing the Interview", another excellent book.

Career Crossroads Review

Career Crossroads

I stalled on reading this book being the procastionater I am. Once I did get into it, I really got excited. I did not know how to apply what I have done in a career of 15 years until I finally had to sit down and rethink all I have done. Once I read it, I got to comparing what I had done and how to apply the skills I had to whatever I was applying for. It made me realize how much I could do. I went into a interview (usually nervous)and was calm, and felt confident in it. They didn't ask me questions that I thought they would ask. Because of my studying this book and analyzing myself I gave answers that surprised even me. Needless to say, I felt I gave my best in this interview and felt really good about it. I got the call a day later for the 2nd interview and the day after they called to offer me the job. I am where I want to be and I owe it to
Career Crossroads.
Thank you
Janet Hafke

The title of the book is mis-leading. This book is not just for software professionals. It is a great read for just about any professionals who want to raise their performance up a notch; for any professional who is interested in doing better in not just their professional but also their personal lives. Any professional who has the discipline to read this book and diligently practice what it says will achieve lasting success & satisfaction.
The best part of the book is that it blends advice with interesting practical anecdotes that strike a chord and stick to your mind.
Read it. More importantly ... practice it. Your life and career will be that much better for it.

You're Hired Interview Skills to Get the Job Review

You're Hired Interview Skills to Get the Job

As a former HR manager, career coach and consultant, I've read a lot of hiring and selection books.
When I received a copy of You're Hired for review, I rolled my eyes and thought, "Please, not another book on how to get a job. I've already read the best, like the timeless, What Color is Your Parachute? Fortunately, You're Hired was a nice change of pace. It's concise and focused on key aspects of interviewing for a job, without the fluff.
In five chapters with 10 brief Appendices, Epstein discusses three phases of job interviews: Before, During, and After the Interview.
-- In Chapter One, Epstein highlights the importance of "Creating Right Livelihood" in order to craft a satisfying and financially productive career. He shows the reader how to envision and plan this "Right Livelihood" through a lengthy but useful activity in Appendix A.
--In Chapter Two, the author comments on preparation of an effective resume and thoughtful research in order to land an interview.
-- In Chapter Three, Mr. Epstein talks about the importance of selling yourself during the interview by being prepared, authentic, confident, and connected with the interviewers.
-- Chapter Four highlights the importance of written "thank you" notes, timely follow-up and declining counter-offers made by one's current employer.
-- Chapter Five features a one-page conclusion summarizing the contents of the book.
The writing style is down-to-earth and personalized as if Epstein is coaching and encouraging the reader through the process of interviewing. The tone is not pretentious as I've observed in other books of a similar nature. The chapters are well-organized and build upon each other.
I didn't understand the relevance of Appendix C on "Boolean Searching on the Internet" and can't imagine a busy job searcher would actually read those 10 pages that seemed out of place in this guide. I would have found it more helpful to read an additional chapter on networking through associations or organizations in order to discover the "hidden" job market.
Armchair Interviews recommends this book for professionals in career transition or students seeking a concise guide for learning the basics of interviewing for success.
