I read a review copy of her book in one sitting, took eight pages of notes and then eagerly agreed to feature her book on [...] -because her new book is jam-packed with excellent information for the many women in our audience who are thinking about starting a business (either at home or abroad).
What exactly is inside? Some motivation to start your business. Some ideas on how to choose a business that is 'right' for you. A great chapter about the importance of matching your personality with your business. Another great chapter on funding/financing options. A few really spot-on 'how-to' chapters for using email marketing, blogs, social media and social networking for your business (although if you're already fluent in using all of these, you might find yourself just scanning these chapters). Some wonderful success story examples scattered throughout the book. Some fantastic quotes (that I now have hanging on my wall!). And lots more.
Congrats Tamara. Yet again, you inspire me. Andrea.

(More customer reviews)If you're completely clueless to running your own home-based business, this is a great beginner (hence the title "for Dummies"). I found the book to work best when you already have an idea for your business. As with similar books, it's great to have a general idea of what type of business you'd like to pursue before reading the book; it will help you better shape your idea.
The book did spend a lot of time talking about how to deal with family problems, creating a quiet workspace, setting work hours and how to get through a project when you have no desire. While some people might find this beneficial, it read like "filler" to me.
All in all, though, it's worth checking out.

(More customer reviews)I've been a long-time fan of the authors' website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I've read lots of "work at home" books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst's and Haaren's new book doesn't dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know - where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they've checked out every one of the websites, plus they've organized the listing into job types (they've included categories such as "merchandiser" and "notary" that are more "work FROM home). They've even included a category of websites for work in the "adult" industry (if you're so inclined)!
The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.
All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

Much has been written about getting started in the specialty food business. I've been creating and selling my own specialty food products in the USA since 2002, and have never seen a book or website which came close to telling you everything you need to know to make a profit doing this.If you check to see who has written any other book or website on this subject, you'll most likely find that the author has never created and sold any of their own specialty food products. The strength of this book is that it explains these rather complex (arcane even) IRS rules in plain common sense language that the average businessman can follow. And further it gives hints and tips that are based on what is known about how the IRS really operates - these are the real rules instead of the written rules. For instance -- Filing by mail reduces your chance of being audited. Why, because the IRS doesn't transcribe all of the information on the printed return to electronic form where it can be analyzed by computer. If you file electronically, everything you enter is available for the computer to analyze.
You'll never know if information like this kept you from being audited, but it's certainly information that you'd want to know. In this book there is a wealth of such information that can't help but be of use as you prepare your tax forms.

I didn't expect each interview to be so vague. None of the interviewees divulged how they became successful or any marketing plans they used to make money online.
There are too many internet "rah-rah you can do it" books out there so this is just another one that will collect dust on my bookshelf. It's pointless for people to keep writing these books unless they plan on including the entrepreneurs marketing strategies for their online businesses.
If you need some inspiration then get this book. If you are expecting some kind of marketing secrets to be revealed then you will be very disappointed.

The title refers to beginning a "side" business, presuming that you still have another primary source of income which is perhaps why it does not seem very detailed. Since I have a business background, much of this book seemed very simplistic to me, but for the person lacking a business background who wants to start his or her own business, it does provide a good set of things that a person would need to know before getting started.
That said, if you are really serious then you will need more than this book. You may need to consult professionals in the financial or legal realm, and also do more research because what you find in this book is pretty much just the basic groundwork stuff without a whole lot of details. For example, in the section on accounting, there is a very brief explanation of a balance sheet and income statement, not enough to really provide enough information to a person who is not familiar with these concepts. If you are talking about doing a side business that remains pretty small then maybe that is okay but if you are planning on starting something that may eventually become your primary source of income, then you are going to have to get more in-depth information in pretty much all of the areas covered by this book.
For someone thinking about starting that side business, this book would be helpful. I have read other Nolo publications and in my opinion this seems to be one of the weaker ones. Most of the others have been excellent and I can't say that about this book. It's good, but like I said, very basic.

How to Start a Successful Home-Based Freelance Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation Business Review

(More customer reviews)This books certainly contains some helpful information if you're going to start you own bookkeeping business, but 3 major things make me recommend you think twice before purchasing this book:

1. To say frankly, this books is about starting ANY professional service business, not just bookkeeping. It certainly refers to some accounting topics - i.e. choosing accounting software etc., but essentially it gives you no idea about how to build competitive advantage of your bookkeeping business and doesn't tell you any ins and outs of this particular business type
2. This books is poorly edited - it has two authors and it looks like these authors wrote different part of the books and nobody took time to make sure that the book is cohesive and doesn't say the same ideas twice. Pictures in this book just magnify the impression of a poor editor work - they are absolutely not stylish and resemble the standard picture set of MS Word in 1990s. This is certainly not to say that poor editing will preclude you from understanding what this book is about, but I expected much more from the item priced at $40.
3. Talking about "Tax preparation" part of this book, the whole content of this chapter can be put into one sentence "At some point of time in developing your bookkeeping business, you might find it interesting to expand your services into tax preparation field". Well, this looks too simplistic to me - taxation is one of the most complicated areas of finance and just to say that sometimes you will wake up and decide to get into this field and next morning you will be there is just odd.
To put is short, if this book cost $15 and were titled "A couple of nice ideas about getting into the world of services business", I would certainly give it 5 star. But a combination of this book's actual name and its $40 cost only earns a 3 star rating.
