101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site (101 Ways series) Review

101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site (101 Ways series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first picked up 101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site, I really didn't expect to find 101 different methods. After reading the book I am sure that 101 is a conservative number.
The author includes two chapters on search engine considerations, as well as chapter-length treatment of marketing in newsgroups, signature files, e-mail, discussion lists, newsletters, link trading, award recognitions, meta-indexes, online advertising, affiliate programs, cybermalls, encouraging repeat visits, press releases, e-zines, web rings, offline promotion, traffic analysis, webcasting, and launching a website. In addition, the book has five appendices, including a brief glossary and a sample implementation and maintenance schedule. The book is especially rich in providing URLs for hundreds of sites that provide additional information.
I was disappointed to find little or no treatment of two very important Web marketing strategies: search engine positioning through doorway pages and viral marketing.
Sweeney does a great job of exposing the reader to the wide variety of methods that can be used to promote a website, but for an in-depth treatment of any of these, the reader will need to consult more specialized books. 101 Ways to Promote Your Website provides an excellent introduction to Web marketing for small to medium-size businesses, and deserves the wide acceptance it has already found in the marketplace.

Biopunk: DIY Scientists Hack the Software of Life Review

Biopunk: DIY Scientists Hack the Software of Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a full-length review, please see my blog entry on the 5AM Solutions web site. Excerpts:
"I was excited to read this book since I am very interested in bioinformatics and punk (although the book has nothing to do with punk music). Although I wouldn't call myself a practitioner of do-it-yourself (DIY) biology, I do work for a very entrepreneurial bioinformatics and software company. The general theme of Biopunk by Marcus Wohlsen, is that we are arguably reaching a point in biotechnology similar to where computing technology was in the 1970's. That is, where the germ of successful companies can grow out of innovations by a handful of people working on a shoestring in garages and basements. Think about Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak starting Apple in their garage, or Bill Gates and Paul Allen starting Microsoft while barely 20 years old. The point, echoed by many of the people who show up in the book, is that until recently biotechnological innovation has been only accessible to scientists at commercial companies or in academic labs.
Biopunk has tons of good raw material and no end of interesting stories (bridges made of trees, a lab engineering bacteria to produce malaria medicine, etc.) but not all of them seem relevant to the main thrust of the book (that malaria lab is a commercial ones, not DIY). If Wohlsen had expanded his book to cover more territory and taken more care to weave these stories together, it could have been a powerful summary of current trends and future predictions in biotechnology."

The Complete Idiot's Guide to HTML5 and CSS3 Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to HTML5 and CSS3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started out with HeadFirst HTML with CSS and XHTML by Freeman and Freeman. If you read the reviews of that book, you will see that it gets great reviews and among those reviews is the comment that people with no prior knowledge of coding are able to code both HTML and CSS after reading that book, which was true for me as well. But the book was published in 2006 and while the concepts remain quite valuable, HTML 5 and CSS 3 have new features and in some cases, different rules.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to HTML 5 and CSS3 has been an excellent follow-up to update what I learned from the Head First book. This new title is not impenetrable for a beginner, but I think it would be tremendously helpful to have some prior exposure to HTML (even a little) so that terms such as 'document type declaration' don't throw them. The pace might be a slight bit fast and one might lack a little bit of the 'why you do things' if it's the very first HTML book that one reads. If that were descriptive of me, I think I'd still be happy with purchasing this book, though.
I found the book to be pleasant reading, relatively quick reading, and surprisingly thorough--not to mention that it is quite within my budget, unlike some of the other choices that I might very much like to have but would pretty much take up my book budget with a single purchase. It was efficient in its presentation, not deviating to unrelated humor, personal stories, or other types of content that I prefer not to invest time in.
This book is ideal for a layperson or an interested person who has a bit of prior knowledge of HTML (such as understanding what 'head' and 'body' tags are; what an 'unordered list' is, etc, and who has some idea of how the items that one sees on a page relate to the code) and who wants to update their knowledge specifically to the new HTML5 and CSS3. There were a couple of things I had to read twice but as someone who works in a very different field, I still followed it quite easily--more readily than most books in this subject area. After devoting perhaps two thirds of a day to this book, I feel fairly ready to take advantage of the new features.
Those who spend their entire workdays designing web pages might find this book is not quite as technical or in depth as they would ultimately want although it still might work well for a quick and pretty good orientation to HTML5 and CSS3. For the price, you really can't go wrong. For an absolute beginner, supplementation with something that had more pictures (or even the 'Head First' book, which is still quite good) might be the best bet; for someone like me with a little experience and no desire to become a fulltime designer, this book is all I need and was a good match for the amount of money I was willing to spend; for someone who designs full time, there might be an interest in adding additional books that most of us wouldn't find intuitively easy to consume.
This was a great choice for me, though, and I am pleased at how much I learned and how painless it was to learn.

Brian has created a fun read that's indicative of what mobile technology holds for our future. Every chapter holds nuggets of information and personal stories that leave you thinking, "Wow, that's pretty cool." Even Steve Jobs didn't know what he had on his hands when he announced the original iPhone as a combination of a mere "three revolutionary products"--an iPod, a cell phone, and a keyboard-less handheld computer. Once Apple introduced the App Store and opened it up to outside developers, however, the iPhone became capable of serving a rapidly growing number of functions--now more than 350,000 and counting.

How to Make Money Using Etsy: A Guide to the Online Marketplace for Crafts and Handmade Products Review

How to Make Money Using Etsy: A Guide to the Online Marketplace for Crafts and Handmade Products
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been selling knitted items on Etsy for over a year now, but only recently started getting serious about it. Sales have come in, but they are slow. I wanted to do something to get more buyers. It's just that Etsy has grown to be so big now, unless you're luckly enough to be featured on the main page, your store can get buried (and mine was buried). So, I bought this book and also Etsy Success - How to Make a Full-Time Income Selling Jewelry, Crafts, and Other Handmade Products Online to get ideas on how to get the word out.
The author takes an "internet marketing" approach to the advice he gives. Basically, he has taken the things that have worked for successful internet marketers (who sell ebooks and other products) and shows you how to apply them to your Etsy store. This was a new approach I hadn't thought of.
There's a lot of mention of SEO (search engine optimization) but it wasn't too complicated to understand. He gives really good advice on setting up a blog and that was helpful. There are also interviews with successful bloggers (some of whom I had read before) which were helpful to better understand how a blog works to get new buyers and keep them interested. Reading about their success also really inspired me.
The big thing I learned was that there's a big difference between advertising your Etsy store and marketing it. Marketing takes a little more work, but can lead to the best results, so it is more efficient in the long run.
This book gave me ideas on how I can spend minimal time marketing my store without it turning into a full-time job, so I have the best of both worlds. This was especially important to me, because I still need time to knit! :)

This book addresses the underlying foundational elements, both theoretical and methodological, of sponsored search. As such, the contents are less affected by the ever-changing implementation aspects of technology. Rather than focusing on the how, this book examines what causes the how. Why do certain keywords work, while others do not? Why does that ad work well, when others that are similar do not? Why does a key phrase cost a given amount? Why do we measure what we do in keyword advertising? This book speaks to that curiosity to understand why we do what we do in sponsored search. The content flows through the major components of any sponsored search effort, regardless of the underlying technology or client or product. The book addresses keywords, ads, consumers, pricing, competitors, analytics, branding, marketing, and advertising, integrating these separate components into an incorporated whole. The focus is on the critical elements, with ample illustrations, and with enough detail to lead the interested reader to further inquiry.

The Lobbying Strategy Handbook: 10 Steps to Advancing Any Cause Effectively Review

The Lobbying Strategy Handbook: 10 Steps to Advancing Any Cause Effectively
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't usually review books on lobbying, but that has more to do with the fact that there are few good books written on this important act of advocacy. I have been a lobbyist for a trade association for over 25 years and I would have loved to have been given a resource like Pat Libby's book when I started out in the business. Don't get me wrong, there is considerable material out there on the political process, it is just that it is not very usable to the average person interested in promoting a legislative cause or agenda.
What I like about The Lobbying Strategy Handbook is that it gives a fairly sound foundation in the basics of law making, the governmental budgeting process and lobbying. The most important part follows with a clear, "how to", ten-step advocacy campaign procedure, with some real life case studies.
The author created and directs a university institute for non-profit education in California and previously ran several non-profits, lobbying for their key issues. She clearly knows what she is writing about from first hand experiences. The reader might not qualify for a degree reading this book, but they will certainly know how to develop and promote a legislative strategy.
Lobbying is not just for the "high rollers" working the corridors of power in Washington. Pat makes this whole advocacy procedure accessible to everyone, especially on the local level. And isn't that what our democratic process is really all about - giving every citizen the abilities to make changes in the way our government works.

The Lobbying Strategy Handbook shows how students with passion for a cause can learn to successfully influence lawmaking in the United States. The centerpiece of this book is a 10-step framework that walks the reader through the essential elements of conducting a lobbying campaign. The framework is illustrated by three separate case studies that show how groups of people have successfully used the model. Undergraduate, graduate students, and anyone interested in making a difference, can use the book to guide them in creating and conducting a grassroots campaign from start to finish.

How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job: A Guide to Starting a Career in Asset Management Review

How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job: A Guide to Starting a Career in Asset Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book because I am in the process of changing career path and move into equity research. I found "How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job" to be extremely helpful in preparing for interviews, and while the book is primarily targeted to business school and undergraduate students, I believe it is also a very good reference book for more experienced finance professionals.
The book begins with an overview of the asset management industry and the role of securities analysts (sell and buy side). The author than explains how to best prepare for the different types of interviews: the stock pitch, brainteasers, case interviews, and the "analyze a stock on the day" interview, among others. What I found particularly helpful was Chapter 4, "Understand and prepare for the stock pitch interview": the author uses Colgate-Palmolive stock as an example and clearly defines all the steps necessary to select the stock, obtain financial reports, calculate the key financial ratios, determine the risks and, most importantly, how to structure the investment thesis.
I would definitely recommend "How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job" to anyone who is interested in sell side equity research and people who want to make a career change.

Legal Aspects of Managing Technology Review

Call this book Release 2.0! It's a fine upgrade from Prof. Burgunder's prior release.
With the growth in the internet and the advent of business method patents, interest in patent, trademark and copyright issues has surged to new heights. Awareness and integration of these legal aspects into our management of technology is absolutely vital for the future.
I practice law. Specifically, I work on intellectual property matters. I am also building two websites. As a result, I am keen on staying on top of my field. Professor Burgunder's new treatise is an important addition to the literature in this field. He writes in an accessible manner: open to students, interested people and legal practitioners alike. In addition, the arrangement of the book is well thought-out: you don't have to read or study it from the first chapter. Depending on your familiarity with this field, you can select topics and areas to review or you can build a college course around the book.
I was also delighted to see that Dr. Burgunder has been intelligent in the use of a web site to keep the book current.
If you are interested in technology and legal issues, this is a great book to help you! I recommend it heartily.

Do as I have by starting your day reading three or four of the blog posts contained in "Vandalism of Words" pages. You won't regret it, and it will definitely put a smile on your face...

What Is This Book About?Great question. The answer is so splendidly simple. This book is about anything, everything and nothing. It is an ideal companion on a bus or train where regular interruptions are guaranteed as every part of this book is very, very short.Ideal also for parents of young children who get interrupted a lot by screaming, crying and toilet training. Great too for those with a limited attention span.If you have already scanned the table of contents you will have noticed that there is certainly no rhyme, logic or theme in this book. The reason for this is that each short utterance captures my thoughts on a singular day during the last twelve months. So get ready for a wild ride, or, ask for a refund now and read no further.
