This book would also be helpful for those who oversee student publications like yearbooks, school newspapers, or literary magazines. After reading this book, I suspect that using publishing in the classroom would also be helpful in school subjects apart from language arts or English. (More customer reviews)Glancing at the title I thought it was just another list of websites, and although many sites are listed, most of them aren't the common knowledge everyday sites that librarians and general web surfers already know about. What makes the book quite a bit different is that the author includes quite a few interviews with people from the websites that are mentioned -- people from Project Gutenberg, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, etc. The author also uses several methods to judge site longevity (i.e., will the site be around in the future), plus there's a website he manages to keep track of changes. With Open Access becoming a trend, this book is the most credible to date.

I also particularly enjoyed the chapters on contracts, working with agents and self-promotion as a 'brand'.
That's the wonderful thing about The ASJA Guide to Freelance Writing ~ it addresses such a wide range of specialist areas that there's something in it for every writer working in any genre. And one of the surprise sections is the Appendix which features a variety of quick but insightful comments from other professional writers. They share their trade secrets, everything from techniques for improving their craft to increasing productivity and profitability.
While the bulk of the material is aimed at journalists and non-fiction writers (since these writers make up the bulk of ASJA's membership), much of the information and advice can be applied by all writers to improve their skills and their business. If you're serious about writing, read this book and have a pen handy.

Hypertext 3.0: Critical Theory and New Media in an Era of Globalization (Parallax: Re-visions of Culture and Society) Review

(More customer reviews)Landow squeezes 20 pages of insight into over 400 pages of some of the most convoluted and repetitive writing to ever be labeled 'critical theory.' This book has little to do with technology or hypermedia as a form of communication. He reminds us, and again suggests, and then points out, and later reminds us again that hypermedia is different from books and periodicals printed on paper. This insight, delivered through meandering and pointless prose, often obscured by subordinate 'critical' statements, is not much of an insight. Using work done in the 1980s and 90s Landow suggests a great reconfiguring of narrative, of writing, and of authors (or authorship- but that's not clear). Much, much better books covering far more ground are "Convergence Culture" by Henry Jenkins and "Radiant Textuality" by McGann.

Although you can download the ebook for free from his site, I was impressed by the comments on his blog and the reviews here that I decided to give the paperback a chance. This has become one of my top books of 2010.
I've been blogging since 2004, with modest success. While I knew quite a bit about blogging and WordPress, I managed to pick up some tips and tricks in the first six chapters. Chapter 7 covered what I felt that I needed help the most - how to write online content that attracts and keeps readers. I also learned a lot from Chapters 8 through 13 and will refer to them once I nail down the principles in the seventh chapter.
This book is such an easy read that I plowed through it this morning, highlighting almost every page.
