37 Days to Launch Review

37 Days to Launch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've ever had a business idea and wanted to pick the brain of someone who knows what they're doing, the snappy and inspiring book "37 Days to Launch" is a valuable resource. Ryan Duques, entrepreneur and force to be reckoned with, shares the passion and know-how that helped him launch more than a dozen business ventures, including a chain of community newspapers, an online education company, and even a bank.
Duques chronicles his entrepreneurial journey through funny anecdotes (selling his parents their own coffee in the morning when he was 7) and serious reflection. He explains what he learned along the way and how those lessons shaped his business development technique. Some of his ideas were successful, some weren't, but many were launched quickly and all with palpable excitement. The book focuses on a particular startup he and business partner James Warner developed and launched in 37 days: the group deal website SavingsClique.com.
The book features actual material from the SavingsClique.com brainstorming and execution process, including e-mails to designers and programmers, prospective logos he and Warner chose from, and their thought process every step of the way. Although the book revolves around launching a profitable website, the ideas and steps can apply to any goal.
This book speaks to anyone who has an idea but needs a kick in the pants to shut down the excuses and negative self-talk, stop waiting for the "perfect" time (there isn't one), quit worrying that it will take too long (done right, it doesn't have to), and get moving on systematically achieving their dreams. When you finish reading "37 Days to Launch", you'll want to sit down and set up your own plan for success.

Duques shares a glimpse inside the mind of an entrepreneur and how ones business and personal lives meld into one during the launch of a company. Duques s book explores how decisions were made, how mistakes were corrected, and, ultimately, how the business was launched. Great Again: Revitalizing America's Entrepreneurial Leadership Review

Great Again: Revitalizing America's Entrepreneurial Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hank Nothhaft and David Kline knock it out of the park with "Great Again," a logical, practical and enjoyable description of what's wrong with America today, and the simple prescription for fixing it. If all business books were this well-written and informative, I'd be reading a lot less fiction. Once started, I could not put it down.
"Great Again" is an inspirational read: passionate, provocative, well-paced, and informative. Nothhaft makes it very clear that the answers are not difficult, and do not require trillions of dollars in government programs, stimulus, and bureaucracy. On the surface, America's economic woes may seem very complex, but "Great Again" cuts through the clutter, extracting gems easily understood by the casual reader. Yet the reader is likely to experience some frustration as well: today's political systems of lobbying and special interests will make real progress elusive - at least until we truly are in a crisis - at which point it may be too late. It is ironic that on one hand, the conscientious CEO wants to do the right thing for America by keeping manufacturing jobs here, even in the face of lucrative tax incentives and other benefits from China and other emerging economies. Meanwhile, politicians who refuse to address corporate tax rates are the same ones threatening to penalize businesses for moving jobs off-shore, while at the same time penning job killing legislation (like Sarbanes Oxley or the more recent Dodds-Frank consumer "protection" legislation). If we can't get a government that actually helps and encourages business growth and entrepreneurship (like China), we should at least get one that stays out of the way.
The use of anecdotes - like the author's childhood in steel town Sharon, PA., as the example of what the American dream used to mean, is effective. I found myself asking, "Yeah, how come my dad - also a blue collar manufacturing worker - was able to own and house and support my mom, my brother and me on one income?" And "Today, why does it take another few billion in borrowed money to fix a bridge?" Ditto for the extensive use of stories told in the words of experienced and successful entrepreneurs. By weaving the facts and figures into their stories and dialogue, there is no tedium - this makes for an entertaining read that will actually be read - this is not the kind of business book that goes straight from the bookstore to the bookshelf.
"Great Again" makes for a fascinating primer in the relationship between patents and jobs, as are the mechanics of the Patent Office. I had no idea the Patent Office is self-funded (and forgot it was established by the US Constitution!) My blood boils to learn that our insatiable Congress has withheld the income rightfully earned by the Patent Office - redirecting it to other federal programs. I'm a huge opponent of the "stimulus" plan, but having read "Great Again," I'd be an advocate to giving the Patent Office $1B - or more - of the yet un-squandered stimulus to increase the Patent Office's staffing of lawyers and engineers needed to break this million-patent log jam. THAT would be real stimulus.
"Great Again" fills a void that has been the missing element of "the lost decade" - leadership - the kind of leadership that realizes expanding the size of the pie through innovation and private investment provides greater prosperity for all. As heated debates about job creation and federal budgets in Washington DC rage, the message of "Great Again" is as timely as it is urgent. While the "flat-earthers" like Freidman are getting the ink, there is a frightening dearth of informed, instructive, and actionable content like this available. As clueless politicians begin to realize they've followed the Freidmans and Krugmans down a bottomless sinkhole, "Great Again" just may be the formula we need to prevent America from becoming a Banana Republic. Bravo!

The innovation engine that powered the U.S. economy to unmatched prosperity over the last century is now failing, threatening the way we work and live. As the nation spins its wheels--reeling from the job losses of the recession and seemingly unable to generate the breakthroughs needed to propel alternative energy, medicine, and other critical fields--Europe and especially Asia have begun to capture the leadership of crucial new technology sectors. How can America revitalize its innovation leadership and kick-start the economy again? In Great Again, veteran high-tech CEO Henry Nothhaft takes us inside the heart of America's innovation community to surface a new proposal for the job creation and economic growth we need.Bringing to life the human drama of the exhilarating, demanding and often frustrating startup environment, Nothhaft offers this complex world as the setting for a promising solution to the country's current standstill.Nothhaft, with journalist David Kline, says a breakthrough can be achieved through a series of practical and achievable tax, regulatory and other reforms that would help strengthen entrepreneurial startup businesses--and offer the necessary fuel for an American resurgence. They key is to bolster the segment and lessen the startup's struggle against a perfect storm of "red tape" burdens. In fact, this entrepreneurial ecosystem may be the only force in society that can create revolutionary innovations that would lead to new industries and millions of new jobs--generating prosperity again for all citizens.Great Again provides fresh research and original analysis to offer an entirely new lens for recovery.Filled with evocative stories and surprising evidence of the crucial role of the innovative force in society, the book presents an action plan that both entrepreneurs and policymakers can rally behind.

This comprehensive revision of the last edition shows real improvements. Two new chapters are included on Competitive Intelligence and One-to-One Marketing. Both are welcome additions. The Internet chapter is on-line since it would be futile to try and publish on paper about a subject that changes daily. There are severeal references to internet subjects and even some of these do not exist anymore. The books design has been modernized and the cases and real-world stories are very up-to-date. I use this text to teach a Marketing Certificate program at UCSB Extension to International students and they find it very understandable and stimulating.

Server+ Study Guide Review

Server+ Study Guide

Having bought the 1st edition by Govanus, I was unpleasantly surprised by its insufficient content and rambling commentary about the author's experiences. When I saw the bad reviews it got, I decided to try Sybex again and buy this 2nd edition by the Klingon sounding Hryhoruk. It was definitely better and worth the expense. BUT, after having passed all the chapter exams with scores of 95 or 100, I failed one of the two final exams on the included CD, which asked a significant number of questions that were NOT covered by the 2nd edition, but were covered on the 1st edition! It seems that Sybex decided to use/recycle questions from its 1st edition in the 2nd edition without coordinating or checking on their relevance. This can be very upsetting on the day before taking the real exam! You need to find at least one other source of study, since I found this 2nd edition Sybex book to be really lacking in the troubleshooting part of the exam, which I failed. Fortunately, my strengths in the other areas brought my overall exam score up to 81%, so I did get the Server+ certification. Since troubleshooting is essential in real life, Sybex has to get this part improved so that you don't suffer from the paper certification syndrome of good theoretical knowledge, but little practical application.

Financial Accounting (Media Enhanced Edition) Review

Financial Accounting (Media Enhanced Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this Textbook in my MBA Financial Accounting course at DePaul Unversity in Chicago, IL. I had very little knowledge of the topic before I took this class.
This book is well written, well organized, and is not too wordy. Because of the depth of this book and its brevity, every sentence is important and I found I had to reread chapters about three times before I really understood the material.
I did notice a few minor typos in the chapter exercises, but for the most part I found it extremely accurate.
This is a difficult subject and this book covers much material. Each chapter must be read carefully. To fully understand the material, I highly encourage doing the exercises in the back of each chapter. Houghton Mifflin has the answer keys in Excel files on their web site, but you need a password to get it.
I can understand the person who found this book confusing. I don't think this book is great for somebody new to the subject. But after getting your feet wet in the subject, this is an excellent text.
This book will make a wonderful reference for years to come. In fact, my father, a small business owner wants my copy.

Yes, you need back surgery. No, back surgery will not help your condition. With all the inaccurate and misleading information out there, it's no wonder that doctors themselves have conflicting views on how to treat a given back problem. However, it is the decision you make regarding back surgery that counts. The problem has always been finding the information necessary to make a wise choice--or it was, until now. Dr. Edwin Haronian has put together a guide that looks at the conditions and the procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical, and answers the most common questions people have about treating back problems. The book is divided into three parts. Part One begins by examining the anatomy of your back. It then discusses the common types of back conditions that result in pain, along with each disorder's telltale signs. From there it looks at the latest and most effective treatments available, from acupuncture to medications to surgeries. Should you select surgery, Part Two offers important pre-op and post-op suggestions to make you an informed patient. And once you return home, Part Three provides a proven program to prevent back problems in the future. No back surgery is minor. A lot of questions need to be asked, answered, and understood before you can make a smart decision about your treatment. With this book in hand, you will have the facts you need to make the choice that is best for you .

Practical Teaching in Emergency Medicine Review

This text should have been written before I was a medical student - several of my attendings were lacking in any instruction or leadership qualities, other than just being great individuals. They needed this background, as did I, when teaching medical students. Specifically, the use of computer/internet sources is a great chapter.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Practical Teaching in Emergency Medicine

Inherent to the teaching and practice of emergency medicine are specific challenges not found in other specialties - the unknowns of the emergency department, the need to identify life- and limb-threatening conditions, the pressure to solve problems and find solutions quickly, and the orchestration of clinical specialists and ancillary services.
Because of these unique demands, books written by clinicians from other disciplines, that extrapolate their information from other specialties, aren't always suitable references for teachers of emergency medicine. This book is different – it shows how to incorporate effective teaching strategies into the unique teaching atmosphere of the emergency department, how to effectively lecture, lead small groups, give feedback, foster life-long faculty development skills, and much more – it is written by emergency medicine physicians for emergency medicine physicians.
Practical Teaching in Emergency Medicine gets to the essential core of how to best teach the art of practicing emergency medicine – and provides the blueprint to become a better teacher, providing guidance on how to accomplish skilful teaching in busy emergency departments. It provides emergency physicians and trainees with the necessary tools to effectively and efficiently transmit information to learners in the often times chaotic emergency department environment.

Lies Salon Owners Believe: And the Truth That Sets them Free
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At one time it seemed that everthing I touched turned to gold. I was motivated also, like the author, by an impoverished childhood. As a successful adult, I had everything I wanted and needed. I now find myself rising out of the ashes of a number of devastating life changes that I had no control over. I previously loved being in the beauty industry. So I started out on the road again to improve my technical skills. Mission well accomplished. I tried working for a handful of owners and felt myself critical of the way they ran thier business...I ended up with a "bad attitude"! Meanwhile, they were experiencing NO GROWTH, and/or producing NO FRUIT. I really learned what not to do, but I felt that there had to be more to learn (I'm an artist, not a business person.) This book, for me, crystalized, in my mind, a big picture for how to approach building my business. It adressed the easy to overlook mistakes I saw owners making. Especially helpful to me has been the advice to "Create and structure your spa business in a way that is emotionally and financially rewarding to you." So simple...and it was the way I made money in the past, but I never applied this to my work in hair. THIS is how we can avoid the burnout that plauges so many owners. Now I work for myself, and I'm starting small, but this advice and many other simple concepts promoted in this book have already paid dividends. I appreciate that Mr. Lok came from humble beginings and worked "smarter." I apologize to the negative reviewer...I must politely disagree. This book is an easy to reference gem. I will read it more than once. I rarely save books, but this one is staying.

Foreword by Jay Conrad Levinson, The Father Of Guerilla Marketing, 21 million copies sold worldwide

• Have you lost the passion, the drive and the fire you once had for your business? • Are you tired of riding the financial roller coaster, where sometimes your appointment book is overflowing with a waiting list and sometimes it's empty as a desert? • Are you hitting the "glass ceiling" of success that virtually every salon or spa owner hits - where income peaks, plateaus, and eventually goes down? • Is your salon/spa business sucking the life out of you? Physically draining and preventing you from having a normal life, such as family get-togethers, time with your friends, your children's sports day, dance performances, and so on. • Are you sick and tired of wasting money on advertising that doesn't get you new clients? • Are you looking to expand to a bigger space or add another location but you are afraid to make the move? • Are you sick of struggling, taking all the risks and putting in "sweat equity" that you're about ready to throw in the towel and get a "regular job" with regular work schedule and regular pay? • Do you want to continue running your salon/spa and have a great "lifestyle" with plenty of money to pay your bills, your mortgage, your car loan and to build a nest egg of cash while having the freedom to work less and when you want? If you answered "YES!" to one or more (maybe all) of these questions, then Lies Salon Owners Believe is the book for you. In this book, Dan Lok and DJ Richoux shatter the seven lies that are holding your business back. Next, they reveal the truth behind why most salon businesses don't work - and what to do about it. They also share with you strategies and techniques you can utilize to increase your odds of success. Now is the time to take control of your destiny and to take action. Use the strategies in this book to achieve the life you've always wanted. Now is the first time that you have a chance to stop hoping for a better life and start creating it.

How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job: A Guide to Starting a Career in Asset Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book because I am in the process of changing career path and move into equity research. I found "How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job" to be extremely helpful in preparing for interviews, and while the book is primarily targeted to business school and undergraduate students, I believe it is also a very good reference book for more experienced finance professionals.
The book begins with an overview of the asset management industry and the role of securities analysts (sell and buy side). The author than explains how to best prepare for the different types of interviews: the stock pitch, brainteasers, case interviews, and the "analyze a stock on the day" interview, among others. What I found particularly helpful was Chapter 4, "Understand and prepare for the stock pitch interview": the author uses Colgate-Palmolive stock as an example and clearly defines all the steps necessary to select the stock, obtain financial reports, calculate the key financial ratios, determine the risks and, most importantly, how to structure the investment thesis.
I would definitely recommend "How to Get an Equity Research Analyst Job" to anyone who is interested in sell side equity research and people who want to make a career change.
