Searching & Researching on the Internet & the World Wide Web 4th edition, by Ernest Ackermann, a computer science professor and Karen Hartman, a reference librarian, is a welcome update to the field of Internet "how-to" books. As it is updated every two years it does not fall behind in this rapidly changing field. The content and organization make it useful for independent study or as an Internet course textbook. Logically organized, it begins with chapters on basics introducing the Internet and the Web, browsers and bookmarks, before progressing to research skills and tools. Each chapter includes detailed activities designed to demonstrate the tools, services, or resources being discussed in the chapter. The authors are good about encouraging readers to adapt and to use their newly learned navigation skills should they encounter differing results from those presented.

(More customer reviews)"They wanted to write a book that wasn't an encyclopedia." So says the authors, and boy did they fail.
This book attempts to cover WAY too much material in its 650 odd pages. Here's an example from someone whose field is economics. In less than two pages this book introduces the following:
variable cost, average total cost, marginal cost, fixed costs, price elasticity, determinants of elasticity (which they absolutely botch), and optimal output via merger of Marginal Revenue and Marginal Cost (with the four curves associated therein all plotted at once). WOW! Who knew that economics was so easy? Two pages to explain what most economic textbooks can't do in less than two full chapters. Most chapters run around twenty-five to twenty-eight or so pages in length and introduce somewhere around forty new vocabulary terms each; an astonishing amount of slam-and-jam style learning.
This book needs one of two things to happen: either it needs to double in length in order to discuss the truck loads of terminology it deems necessary to learn marketing; or it needs to focus on far fewer topics.

(More customer reviews)An expensive, but good book for someone who has limited experience with computers, Networks etc. and want a good basic knowledge of that area. The book covers a lot of topics without going into too deep of a detail.
Unfortuntely, I should have looked closer at the content of the book because I was wanting a more update version of the Shelly Cashman book "Understanding and troubleshooting your PC". A lot that I read, I already knew, but it was still a good book.

(More customer reviews)One of the book's biggest problems is that it rambles. The book has 14 multi-topic-chapters. This could be solved with going to 20 or 24 focused chapters. Part of the problem is the book's target audience - accounting, business or management majors that should know what IT can do for them. I have over 25 years in business and over 10 years in IT, dealing with Fortune 100 companies to mom and pop shops. When I read this book, I get they impression they talked to one person or one company and they take that as industry standards. Oops these generalizations miss the mark. If they talk to only one company they should say so- this is the way XYZ does this. If you have a 42 page chapter called "Database Systems and Business Intelligence" the business intelligence (BI) section should be longer than a 1/2 page. I have thought this book wouldn't be a good value at half the price.

I looked it over and I am sure it's fine for some, but if you managed to turn your computer on, find the Internet, find amazon, and search for these reviews, then you no longer need this book. I wasn't impressed that the author rated his own book, but at least he gave it 5 stars. I would hate to think of an author giving less than that to his own book.

I spent over a 1/2 hour on the phone with Amazon Customer Service that ended up including a three-way call to the publisher trying to figure out if this book came with the audio cd's that are required by most colleges. Needless to say the call got me nowhere. Even the Customer service rep. from the publisher was clueless on the matter. So I just ended up ordering it anyways thru amazon thinking that if it did not have the cds I would just send it back. Guess what 1 day later package arrives with cds included!

Both are welcome additions. The Internet chapter is on-line since it would be futile to try and publish on paper about a subject that changes daily. There are severeal references to internet subjects and even some of these do not exist anymore. The books design has been modernized and the cases and real-world stories are very up-to-date. I use this text to teach a Marketing Certificate program at UCSB Extension to International students and they find it very understandable and stimulating.

(More customer reviews)The book is fine, but textbook publishers need to realize teachers assign reading and homework assignments according to page numbers. So when a teacher say complete the assignment on pages 144-145, because they don't list those numbers in the Kindle edition it makes it impossible to do. Other wise it's an excellent textbook that covers the topics well. Unfortunately that one downside makes it extremely difficult to recommend in the Kindle edition.
