As a Kindle author, with three novels available and others in progress, I found Stephen Windwalker's work invaluable. This, and the companion work on marketing to Kindle readership, have provided great support and keen insight on preparing my work to better leverage colophon and copyright issues. The step-by-step support on the publishing process answered many questions that were not present on the Digital Text Platform site. If you plan to publish a Kindle book, or already have one, check out these easy to follow tips (20 of them). I'm delighted that there are more Windwalker tips in progress. It's great to have his works at my back.

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More Review

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, timing is everything... and isn't always fair. Had I not just completed reading Jeffrey & Bryan Eisenberg's "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark?" before picking up "The Long Tail," I would probably have given this book 4 stars.
Chris Anderson has done a very good job of showing us the new "economics of abundance," or the connection of supply and demand thru technology and the Internet.
Question: What happens when everything in the world becomes available to everyone?
Answer: A market that never dies... markets for every niche, and vice-versa.
The Long Tail.
Using corporate examples like Google, eBay, iTunes and Netflix, Anderson lends an interesting perspective on how these companies have grabbed the Long Tail theory (consciously or unconsciously) and used it as the foundation for their staggering success. For customers of these companies, being online means unlimited "shelf space" - access to hundreds of thousands of bits of information, products and services they'd never been exposed to otherwise.
But how does the ordinary businessperson experience the success of the eBays of the world? Here, Anderson falls short. He states his "secret" to The Long Tail:
1.Make everything available
2.Help me find it
It's the "help me find it" part that Anderson ignores. In fact, it's the end of the book... you're left hanging, thinking, "So how in hell am I supposed to help people find me?"
Taken for what it is - a good presentation of a present-day theory (and one that was adequately covered in the original article in Wired magazine), the book is fine. But to really understand what it takes to make the Long Tail theory work for you, you must get a copy of "Waiting for Your Cat to Bark." It's in-depth coverage on not only how our economy works today, but understanding how people buy, how to understand what they're looking for and what you need to do to create persuasion magic not only on your website but in all your marketing materials.
This is not a time for "build it and they will come." Understanding an economy is only the first step. The real question is - what are you going to do about it to make yourself an integral part of the Long Tail?
It's too bad "The Long Tail" and "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark" can't be sold in a box set - they were made for each other.

This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.

RED HOT INTERNET PUBLICITY: An Insider's Guide to Promoting Your Book on the Internet
Average Reviews:

Penny C. Sansevieri is a no nonsense thinker and writer. Beginning her career as an author ('Candlewood Lake', 'The Cliffhanger' etc) she faced the beast of competition in the publishing world, and instead of caving in, she took control, learned all the ins and outs of getting books published, and shared that hard won information and experience in such highly successful books as 'Get Published Today: An Insider's Guide to Publishing Success' and 'From Book to Bestseller: An Insider's Guide to Publicizing and Marketing Your Book!'. Now she has synthesized all of that information in this newest book that is the most complete guide to marketing books on the Internet available.
Sansevieri does not waste the reader's time with puffery or examples of her own successes. Instead she opts to jump right to the essentials, giving a nod to the importance of the Internet as a tool of communication and commerce. She doesn't merely suggest such valuable skills as creating a website for authors to attract attention, she carefully and very thoughtfully provides exact guidelines for squeezing the most benefits from the time involved in design, wording, linking, blogging, networking, virtual book events (and in the age when bookstores become less friendly as opportunities for authors to read and sell their books during spicy evenings, this is a unique concept) - all the techniques she has mined and understands thoroughly.
Sansivieri's book RED HOT INTERNET PUBLICITY contains more useful web resources, addresses of the best blog sites and web design and tool sites, and pieces of sound advice in this brief 200 pages than any on the market today. She is the epitome of a user-friendly teacher and expert and her writing contains not only valuable information and insights but wit to boot! For all authors in search of the keys to the value of Internet promotion, this excellent book will be an exceptional value. Grady Harp, June 07

Cloud Application Architectures: Building Applications and Infrastructure in the Cloud (Theory in Practice (O'Reilly)) Review

Cloud Application Architectures: Building Applications and Infrastructure in the Cloud (Theory in Practice (O'Reilly))
Average Reviews:

All it talks about is Amazon's EC2, S3, MapReduce. It does not talk about "Application Architecture". It does not have ideas about how to break up traditional programs into MapReduce paradigm. It should be called Cloud Operations Architecture. If it was named by that title, I'd give it 5 stars. The book itself is not bad, but it will get obsolete very quickly due to its specificity to Amazon.
subtitle should be :Building Applications and Infrastructure in Amazon Cloud

How to Make Money Online with eBay, Yahoo, and Google Review

How to Make Money Online with eBay, Yahoo, and Google
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was disappointed in this book because it made me believe that it would be about Yahoo! and Google equally with eBay. However, this book was all about eBay with a tiny sprinkling of Yahoo! and Google here and there -- certainly not enough to include Yahoo! and Google in the title of the book. The book has 29 chapters. It doesn't stop talking about eBay until Chapter 21 then resumes its eBay discussion in Chapter 29.
The book should have been called "eBay 101" or "eBay for Not-So-Dumb Dummies." It does have good information for a complete eBay newbie but I would recommend other books for the non-eBay savvy newcomer like Adam Ginsberg's book: How to Buy, Sell, and Profit on eBay or eBay Powerseller Secrets by Debra and Brad Schepp. In fact, those two books I just mentioned alone should be all you need to get started if you want to make money on eBay.
Pass on this book. It's a rip off. The title is not appropriate and designed to deceive people into believing that the book will give you a strong online selling strategy with a successful mix of eBay, Yahoo!, and Google when that isn't the case. It's all about eBay with a few words dropped in here and there about Yahoo! and Google.

I purchased the Kindle version for my iPad so that I could bookmark, highlight and have it close by as a reference tool. As a Searchologist, I recommend it highly.

Programming Amazon Web Services: S3, EC2, SQS, FPS, and SimpleDB Review

Programming Amazon Web Services: S3, EC2, SQS, FPS, and SimpleDB
Average Reviews:

This is a good overview of the suite of services that comprise Amazon Web Services (AWS), I'd have given it a 3.5 star rating if I could. It talks about all of them, but it spends the bulk of its time, very reasonably, discussing S3 (the persistent storage system) and EC2 (the compute cloud - basically Amazon's Rackspace in the clouds) - each getting about 100 pages devoted to it.
As others have noted it is out of date - but any book would have the same problem due to the moving target that AWS is. The biggest news is that EC2 is going to be getting persistent storage, which I believe will change the game completely when it is rolled out to the public. Instead of needing some elaborate connection with S3, now instances will behave much more like a typical physical machine with real disk drive. The book, on the other hand, provides almost no real advice on how to deal with the problem of non-persistence of EC2's current storage mechanism. This is a signifcant problem that everyone will have to deal with and glossing over it is a failing of the book.
This is also a Ruby book, which I found fairly annoying. Nowhere in the description does it suggest that it is done in Ruby. And while Ruby certainly is trendy these days, the actual number of Ruby developers is small - it gets undue weight in computer texts. At the end of the day, though, it generally provides the actual request strings and XML requests and responses for non-ruby folk to come to their own conclusions.
This is a worthwhile book to get if you're interested in quickly getting a good and broad idea on how to work with AWS. It will give a good foundation to get more out of the documentation and forums found on Amazon's AWS site itself.

Building on the success of its storefront and fulfillment services, Amazon now allows businesses to "rent" computing power, data storage and bandwidth on its vast network platform. This book demonstrates how developers working with small- to mid-sized companies can take advantage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as the Simple Storage Service (S3), Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Simple Queue Service (SQS), Flexible Payments Service (FPS), and SimpleDB to build web-scale business applications. With AWS, Amazon offers a new paradigm for IT infrastructure: use what you need, as you need it, and pay as you go. Programming Amazon Web Services explains how you can access Amazon's open APIs to store and run applications, rather than spend precious time and resources building your own. With this book, you'll learn all the technical details you need to: Store and retrieve any amount of data using application servers, unlimited data storage, and bandwidth with the Amazon S3 serviceBuy computing time using Amazon EC2's interface to requisition machines, load them with an application environment, manage access permissions, and run your image using as many or few systems as neededUse Amazon's web-scale messaging infrastructure to store messages as they travel between computers with Amazon SQSLeverage the Amazon FPS service to structure payment instructions and allow the movement of money between any two entities, humans or computersCreate and store multiple data sets, query your data easily, and return the results using Amazon SimpleDB.Scale up or down at a moment's notice, using these services to employ as much time and space as you needWhether you're starting a new online business, need to ramp up existing services, or require an offsite backup for your home, Programming Amazon Web Services gives you the background and the practical knowledge you need to start using AWS. Other books explain how to build web services. This book teaches businesses how to take make use of existing services from an established technology leader.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

The Web-Savvy Writer: Book Promotion With A High-Tech Twist, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

What a lovely book. I'm really glad I purchased a copy for myself. I'm a SCORE volunteer counselor and quite often my clients ask about Web sites and Web site design, and how to incorporate them into their small business' marketing plan. This book is the one that comes to my mind when I recommend a tome for them to read so I don't have to go into a long-winded sermon on the ins-and-outs of building a Web site. The other book I like a lot is Susan Daffron's book entitled Web Business Success (ISBN: 0974924504).
The book has 12 chapters, but I haven't listed them below. The list below includes the topics covered in the book that I have prioritized and grouped the way I would have liked the book to read.
1. How to Design a Web site
2. Add a Blog
3. Add a Podcast
4. Add an Ezine
5. Create eBooks
6. Create audio CDs and DVDs
7. Learn about Shopping Cart technology
8. Learn about RSS technology
9. Learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
10. Learn about Online Advertising
11. Learn about Online Marketing
12. Learn about Using Amazon to Promote and Sell Your Book
My favorite topics were 1, 2, 5, 9 and 11. In my humble opinion they are the meat to putting together a Net presence using a Web site. It is these topics that I recommend my SCORE clients focus on when reading the book. I've tried the ezine thing, and I have found it to be a waste of time and effort. CDs and DVDs are beyond me at this time. But maybe in the future I might consider them as a great marketing vehicle. I think shopping cart technology is good for a retail shop. But an author with only one or two titles may want to skip it. I don't find much use for RSS technology since I don't go heavy on reading blogs. Maybe when there get to be a number of good blogs to read, then I might recommend RSS.
I have recently read a few books on using Amazon to promote and sell POD books. I think they were written after this book, and they seem to do a better job covering topic #12 above. Maybe the material on Amazon in this book is a little dated? But I saw a lot of good stuff on Amazon in this book. Consider also checking out Shepard's book entitled Aiming at Amazon (ISBN: 093849743X) and Weber's book entitled Plug Your Book! (ISBN: 0977240614).
Don't think that this book is only good for authors who want to use the Net to market their book. The principles and techniques beautifully explained in this book are equally applicable to promoting any business. So any wanta-be entrepreneur that doesn't know much about the Net or Web sites will do themselves a favor by getting this book, reading it, and then studying it. 5 stars!

Holy IT: A Guide to Finding and Doing Your Thing - Your 'IT' (Volume 2) Review

Holy IT: A Guide to Finding and Doing Your Thing - Your 'IT' (Volume 2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What are you doing about what you aren't doing? This is the jump-start question Scott Wittig asks his readers in his book, Holy IT!: A Guide to Finding and Doing Your Thing. Wittig challenges his readers to take that uncomfortable first step in determining what they really want to do with the rest of their lives and then do it! According to Wittig, all you have to do to determine your IT is 1)Identify 2)Predict 3)Determine 4)Execute. Wittig borrowed these steps from Driver's Ed. He also emphasizes that your IT must have the 3 P's: passion, but must also include purpose and be a project (put stuff on your calendar you can do!) or it'll never get off of the ground.
Holy IT! is a fun read packed with quotes (mostly from John Maxwell) and graphics. You can probably read this text in one sitting and start working on your IT immediately afterwards. This book is also a workbook with lots of available white space to take notes and to GET QUIET. Wittig discusses how important meditating and reflecting on your IT is so you can shut out the other voices and get to work on what YOU need to do. Wittig advocates forming a mastermind group. Forming and getting the most out of mastermind groups is another key element in successfully manifesting your IT. In these groups the members forge a safe place to discuss issues and problems. Members offer feedback and accountabilty, which is necessary when you're starting out on your IT and need reinforcement that your path is the correct one to follow. In fact, one of his mastermind partners who is a graphic designer created Wittig's eye-catching book cover of an acorn.
The acorn is a symbol of growth, but it's also part of the squirrel's story in Chapter 10: The Law of the Squirrel. If a squirrel is indecisive and darts back into the road because he thinks he can get a bigger acorn, then he most likely to get squashed by a car. The analogy works: if you're indecisive about your IT, you'll never get past "go." Wittig reminds us to get rid of our friends who are naysayers, the "toppers" (who try to best you at every turn) and stick to the cheerleaders, even if they are outnumbered by the previous groups.
Wittig wants his readers to achieve clarity as well as take a honest look at themselves. Many times, the IT isn't far from home. Tom Rath says, "You cannot be everything you want to be-but you can be more of who you already are." Coach K of Duke University echoes this sentiment with, "Look in your house, not out of your window." On the flip side, Wittig also makes you ask yourself, "How can I drop something and hand that over to someone else?" and "What is it that I've always done (that's kind of bugged me) that I could just quit doing?"
Written in a down-to-earth style that is exactly how Wittig speaks in person, this fun-to-read book with short chapters is infused with positivity. The book of course mirrors Scott Wittig's IT of helping others achieve. One of my favorite take-aways was how Wittig tells us that when we switch careers our previous career helps us with what will do now. And as as someone who has switched careers from a retail environment to a creative writing one, Wittig provides much-needed validation to everyone who wants to know that their previous jobs weren't a waste of time or effort.

Plug Your Business Marketing on MySpace, YouTube, blogs and podcasts and other Web 2.0 social networks Review

Plug Your Business Marketing on MySpace, YouTube, blogs and podcasts and other Web 2.0 social networks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. Thus it only gets a 4 star rating from me. Maybe I feel this way because I've read the author's other book entitled Plug Your Book and this book comes off being very similar? Maybe it was because it was 142 pages and has a sales price of almost $20? Or maybe it was because I have read other books that cover much of the same material and they go into more depth?
The book is comprised of the following 14 chapters:
1. Introduction
2. MySpace Buzz
3. Building Your Web Site
4. Blogging for Business
5. Blog Tours
6. Multimedia
7. Tag - You're It!
8. The Social Jungle
9. Social Media, Social Search
10. Syndicating Your Content
11. Revenue from Your Site
12. Pay-Per-Click Advertising
13. Power Tools
14. Ethics of Online Marketing
I found Chapter 2 to be the best in the book. I can see how a rock band or an author can promote themselves at MySpace. In fact, they do successfully. But I'm not yet convinced that MySpace is really conducive to marketing a small business. It would have been nice if the book had clearly explained at least a few success stories regarding small businesses marketing on MySpace. By reading the book I am left thinking it is just a hope to successfully market a small business using that social network.
I liked Chapter 3 and found it to be a good introduction to putting together a Web site. I recommend reading The Web Savvy Writer (ISBN: 0977830403) if you are interested in a more in depth coverage on the subject. I liked Chapter 4 and also found it to be a good introduction to blogging for business. For more on the subject I recommend reading Ted Demopoulos' books (ISBN: 1419584359 and ISBN: 1419536451). And I liked chapters 7 and 8, but for a more in depth coverage I recommend reading Sell Your Book on Amazon (ISBN: 1432701967).
The "Recommended Reading" list at the end of this tome included some interesting books. I would have liked to have seen Marketing to the Social Web (ISBN: 0470124172) and Marketing in the New Media (ISBN: 1551807319) included as well, but they weren't. As you can see from my review that this book covers a lot of ground in just a few pages. I highly recommend it as a lead-in to many other books. 4 stars!

Get massive exposure for your business, no special computer skills needed.-- Quit wasting money on traditional advertising and marketing campaigns.-- Blog to connect with customers and generate word of mouth.-- Boost your visibility with Google; use MySpace for viral marketing.-- Ignite word of mouth with Web social networksNo matter what kind of business you have, its success depends on two things: It must serve a need, and you must find customers. Most new businesses fail simply because the right people never heard about them. And this is the paradox for entrepreneurs: People aren't paying attention to traditional marketing and advertising anymore. But free advertising is alive and well.Whatever you want to call it --- buzz, word of mouth, peer-to-peer or viral marketing -- you can't just manufacture it. You must earn it -- by engaging your target market.Fortunately, there is a very straightforward, ethical way of gaining this free exposure: by participating on social networks. These social media sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, and other Web 2.0 networks, allow members to create profiles of themselves (or their business) with the objective of meeting like-minded friends and partners who share the same passions and goals. The individuals participating on these networks might be searching for anything -- a mentor, a ride to work, a date for Saturday night, recommendations for a movie, a new job, or perhaps they want to meet someone who's an expert in their hobby. For business owners who learn to use them, social networks can provide valuable free exposure to a worldwide pool of new customers and fans. These social networks have turned traditional marketing on its head. No longer must a business owner scrape together a huge pile of cash for a marketing campaign, then pray that it works. Hundreds of thousands of businesses, large and small, are leveraging social networks to lure new customers, often at virtually no cost. And unlike most traditional advertising, social networking can pay dividends for years to come because it forges a strong link between you and consumers, enabling your biggest fans to become evangelists for your business.Internet social networks allow entrepreneurs to build their business one customer at a time. It's the same as having a "street team" pounding the pavement for you. Just as your street team might pass out fliers about a show or new product, your MySpace friends can forward the same type of information using electronic messages to a much larger audience. When you're successful, your loyal customers begin spreading the word for you, generating true word of mouth. Entrepreneurs can no longer depend on interruption-based ads, such as commercials and junk mail, which force consumers to stop what they're doing and pay attention. But with social networking, you can influence these consumers precisely at the point where they're engaged. In the old days, with postal direct mail or telephone cold-calling, your chance of getting a response from someone who didn't know you was about 2 percent -- and that's if you had a big marketing budget and were doing everything right. But today, the social-networking skills described in this book can result in response rates of 80 percent or more. What are you waiting for? Put these revolutionary ideas to work today! --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Plug Your Book Online Book Marketing for Authors, Book Publicity through Social Networking Review

Plug Your Book Online Book Marketing for Authors, Book Publicity through Social Networking

I was excited to get this book since I wanted new ways to "plug" my book. Currently I have an ebook and the subtitle of "Online Book Marketing for Authors" got me to take a look at Weber's book.
The copyright date is 2007 and since then a lot has changed. In fact he has a section on social marketing. It is all about MySpace. There is no mention of Facebook. To Steve's credit he has set up a site (blog) with updates and there he does have posts about Facebook and social marketing. This book, however needs an updated edition.
This isn't necessarily a bad book if you want to focus on marketing your book through Amazon, which is what most of the book is focused on. If that's your goal then this is a good book to get. The writing and layout of the book is good and makes it easy to read.
Bottom line is that the subtitle should be "Online Book Marketing Through Amazon and MySpace", and it is in need of a serious update/revision.

Legal Aspects of Managing Technology Review

Legal Aspects of Managing Technology

Call this book Release 2.0! It's a fine upgrade from Prof. Burgunder's prior release.
With the growth in the internet and the advent of business method patents, interest in patent, trademark and copyright issues has surged to new heights. Awareness and integration of these legal aspects into our management of technology is absolutely vital for the future.
I practice law. Specifically, I work on intellectual property matters. I am also building two websites. As a result, I am keen on staying on top of my field. Professor Burgunder's new treatise is an important addition to the literature in this field. He writes in an accessible manner: open to students, interested people and legal practitioners alike. In addition, the arrangement of the book is well thought-out: you don't have to read or study it from the first chapter. Depending on your familiarity with this field, you can select topics and areas to review or you can build a college course around the book.
I was also delighted to see that Dr. Burgunder has been intelligent in the use of a web site to keep the book current.
If you are interested in technology and legal issues, this is a great book to help you! I recommend it heartily.
