eBay Quick Steps
A book review by Frank Dobrowolski
May 12, 2005
by Carole Matthews & John Cronan
Published by McGraw-Hill/Osborne
ISBN 0-07-225506-4 2004 240 pages
List price: $16.99 On Amazon: $11.55 +S/H
This is a short book, with wide margins and many vivid color illustrations and tables. As a result it is a quick read - per its title. It has a simple, direct approach which works well for eBay beginners and novices. It also contains some information that likely would help advanced users.
I like the illustrated, annotated Walk through of an eBay Transaction
1.Prospective seller registers to sell an item on eBay
2.Takes photos of object to sell and writes a description of it
3.Enters the description, photos, payment terms, shipping information, and other supporting material into eBay's auction selling form
4.Track the item as buyers start bidding on it
5.The buyer registers to participate in the auction
6.Buyer finds the item and bids on it
7.Buyer wins the auction and connects with seller to verify the details and the buyer pays the seller
8.Seller sends the package per the shipping terms specified
9.Buyer receives the item
10.Buyer and Seller provide feedback about each other in this transaction.
The Find Your Way around eBay chapter begins with a page-filling illustration that is typical of this book. The eBay home page is shown and eight areas are picked with a comment on each. The chapter continues with more large figures and sidebar "Tips" and "notes".
One page is filled with a table that lists the type of auction, gives a description and notes requirements. For example:
*Auction - Buy It Now [Fixed Price]
*Description - Offers the item for a given price and there is no auction
*Requirement - Seller must have a feedback rating of at least 30 and be a registered user for at least 14 days of be ID Verified.
The guidance on ID Verified contains 11 steps and one figure, one Note and one Tip.
The following chapters are similarly presented in easy to follow text with numerous colorful illustration, tables and sidebars. Chapter 9 presents information I have not seen this in other books on eBay and it is done well here. The Chapter
has sections entitled
*Detect and Report Account theft
*Use Buyer Fraud-Protection Measures
*File a Fraud Alert
*Set up a Bidder Alert
*Block Bidders or Buyers
*Report Unwelcome Buyers
*Use Additional Resources
a.Security Center
b.Law Enforcement & Other Resources
This may be the best book on eBay I have seen for beginners and novices in using eBay. Advanced users probably would find some information that they could use.

The 7 Essential Steps to Successful eBay Marketing Review

The 7 Essential Steps to Successful eBay Marketing

I sell professionally on ebay, and when I tell people what I do for a living, many times they'll laugh or think that I'm not serious. But this book "gets" that there are lots of us out there who are serious about selling on ebay - we run legitimate businesses with real inventory, real employees, and real profit and loss - we aren't just cleaning out granny's attic for some extra cash. This resource is a true asset for people like us. It addresses some serious issues about selling on ebay and earning a living doing so. It's about so much more than what people usually consider "marketing" - it includes tangible plans for building a comprehensive small business plan and strategic planning for the future success of the business.
The tools chapter is also fantastic - they've done a really comprehensive review of all the tools available. The chapter on writing good item descriptions is also great. I've always struggled with description writing, but the authors disclose the secrets that advertising pros use to write good ads, and I'll be darned, it works great for ebay too!

What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It: The Definitive Guide to Product Sourcing for eBay and Beyond Review

What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It: The Definitive Guide to Product Sourcing for eBay and Beyond
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Upon first reading "What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It," authors Lisa Suttora and Chris Malta seem genuine in their efforts to provide the eBay seller with legitimate sources for items to sell on this extremely competitive marketplace. It isn't apparent until you are well into the book, that the ulterior motive behind it all, is to drive you to the two web sites owned by the authors. At first, I was so impressed with the information that I was receiving, that it didn't bother me that I might have to sign up for both websites in order to actually utilize the information in the book. After all, Chris Malta and Lisa Suttora are two of only a hand full of certified eBay providers. How could I possibly go wrong by signing up for their services.
First, I signed up for Chris Malta's, "Drop Ship Source Directory," at a one time cost of $69. While I have no question that Chris is an honest guy, and makes an all out effort to provide subscriber's with a plethora of wholesale distributors that are willing to drop ship, it soon becomes apparent that it is virtually impossible to find any drop shippers that can provide you with competitive enough pricing to make listing the product on eBay a profitable endeavor. After literally spending weeks looking through the entire list of drop shippers, and comparing closed auction prices on eBay, I have come to the conclusion that either drop shipping is not the way to run an eBay business, or the list of drop shippers that Chris Malta supplies is inadequate to help the eBay seller who wishes to use this method to run their eBay business. The web site is very difficult and time consuming to maneuver, and unless you have the patience to spend months searching for the niche drop shipper that will enable you to make money on eBay, I would stay away from this product. Malta also offers other wholesale product sourcing databases, but these are at extra cost. He now admits that it is best to use a combination of drop shippers and light bulk wholesalers when selling on eBay, however for many years, his Drop Ship Source Directory was touted by Malta as being "the source", for making a great living on eBay. Sorry Chris, but it no longer works.
As for Lisa Suttora, I got sucked into signing up for her web site, "Whatdoisell.com, as well. While she provides a ton of information on how to go about selling on eBay, when it came down to actually researching her list of wholesale suppliers, I ran into the same quandary. I compared wholesale prices from product sources on her web site with prices for closed eBay auctions. In all cases, the prices for closed eBay auctions were either lower than what I could have purchased the items for, using her list of wholesalers, or the items had not sold at all. I canceled my $19.97 monthly subscription, as I found it to be useless. In addition, and even more troubling was the fact that I emailed Lisa Suttora several weeks before signing up to her web site subscription. I had a long list of questions and concerns. When I didn't hear back, I contacted one of her employees and asked if she had received my email. Her answer was an emphatic yes, however Lisa never bothered to get back to me. Rude behavior, to say the least.
So, in review, there will be those who think this book is great, however, I am not one of them. Upon reading the book, if you are willing to look between the lines, you will discover that what you are being told is nothing more than an advertisement for the authors goods. If you follow up and purchase the goods, as I did, you will most likely be extremely disappointed with the results.

Author: David A. Karp
Description:
eBay Hacks by David A. Karp
Published by O'Reilly ISBN 059610068X
Reviewed by Jim Lauria-HuNTUG member
From the introduction: "Essentially, you'll find in this book the tools to help you trade smarter and safer, make more money, and have fun doing it."
This second edition-revised and updated to June 2005-provides the eBayer with tips and tools (aka hacks) for successful bidding, buying and selling on the premier online auction web site.
I found the hacks provided by the author to be extremely helpful and informative, easy to use and understand. As a long time eBay seller I had become complacent with the tools and techniques which I had been using for months or even years. This book has given me new ideas and approaches to make my eBay business better.
Karp provides clever shortcuts and powerful tools to do all sorts of neat things like create better titles, listings and descriptions to fancier photographs (Hack 74) and even how to cultivate a good reputation and protect yourself and your $ (Hacks 25 & 85). He also provides warnings about your safety, privacy and money matters.
Included is a chapter on eBay's Application Programming Interface, XML, Perl, PHP and RSS and development of custom software apps that can be worked in to one's own business apps and can also be passed along to others-hey maybe even for a small fee!
The book is well written with plenty of photos, screen shots and lots of code to get you up and buying/selling in quick fashion. 438 pages that read through really quickly and are packed with plenty of good stuff.
I would recommend this title for anyone-novice or pro-who is or would like to make or save some money using eBay or just to have some fun while selling your wares. The book lists for $24.95-less online.
I give this one 5 stars.

Whatever you call it--an online auction house, the world's largest flea market, or a vast social experiment--no metaphor completely describes the huge trading community that is eBay. Underneath it all, eBay is also a computer program and a complex socio-economic system, requiring experience, finesse, and the right tools to master.

eBay Hacks, 2nd Edition has been completely revised and updated to make use of an array of new tools and features, as well as to reflect the changes in the eBay API, eBay's policies, and general practices of its increasingly sophisticated users. In all, the new edition of eBay Hacks sports 30 brand-new hacks plus dozens of hacks that have been expanded, deepened, or otherwise completely rewritten.

eBay Hacks shows you how to become a more efficient buyer and seller with clever tricks and shortcuts that will surprise even the most experienced eBayers. The book's wide range of topics covers all aspects of using eBay, such as advanced searching techniques, sniping tools, selling strategies, photography tips, and even research techniques for PowerSellers. But eBay Hacks doesn't just cover the basics; you'll learn how to write scripts to automate tedious tasks, take better photos, and tap into the eBay API to develop your own custom tools. Unlike any other book, eBay Hacks, 2nd Edition also provides insight into the social aspects of the eBay community, with diplomatic tools to help to get what you want with the least hassle and risk of negative feedback.

This bestseller supplies you with the tools you need to master eBay, whether as a buyer or seller, casual surfer or serious collector, novice or seasoned expert. With this guide, you will become a savvy power user who trades smarter and safer, makes more money, enjoys successes, and has fun doing it.

First of all I am shocked, shocked I tell you that the American Management Association would publish a series of books of this low caliber.
Like most things these days the buildup and hype is overshawdowed by the delivery. On the back cover of the book it states that "This unvelievably powerful book shows step-by-step how to get all of your items listed not only on eBay but also on Amazon.com..." but it doesn't it only briefly mentions Amazon; in two places in only a very minor way (check it out for youself, use the look inside to check the back cover, table of contents, and the index.)
This is the most simplistic of internet books I have ever read...with all the the practical internet nutrition as a bag of skittles. Most chapters are no more than 7 or eight pages, with unbeleivably huge font type and paragraph headings that it ressembles a kids book.
For example Chapter 10, Creating Yahoo Ads, totals less than two full pages!!! This chapter only has about 48 (FORTY EIGHT) lines of full text, about what a sixth grade reader would expect.
I first picked up the book because of the cover text which states, "Use Froogle, Datafeeds, Cross selling, Advanced Listing Strategies and more to boost sales on the webs #1 auction site."
Being interested in the concept of datafeeds I was dissapointed when I got to that portion of the book.
One other mention here. The author does a good job of making a plug for his other books and websites, but I suggest you go to his website. For someone that is making money on the internet and writing books about it the site looks like those from 10 years ago, about the time eBay was started. It has the coolness factor of white shoes with plaid pants. I will say though that he did have a good idea with the diagram about linking multiple websites on page 127.
Very dissapointed. Do your self a favor and look for other ebay books.

First, let me qualify myself. I've been selling on eBay for several years now and attained the level of Gold PowerSeller this past summer. That basically means I average over $10,000 in monthly sales. I bought this book because I attended a session hosted by the author at eBay Live! in June and thoroughly enjoyed it. It covers everything you need to know about setting up your business, equipment needed (whether shoestring budget or optimal setup), finding product at a price you can afford AND make a profit, tools to use, how to price, how to market and tons more. You only need a few of these gems to make a difference, but there are plenty to pick from. It's well written and easy to understand, whether you're a novice or a seasoned eBay pro. What it WON'T do is tell you how to obtain an eBay ID, set up a seller account and that sort of thing. But there are scores of books that tell you that, in addition to the eBay help pages.
This book isn't for the casual eBay seller. If you just want to sell a few things out of your attic instead of holding a garage sale, don't bother. But if you're serious about building an ongoing eBay business, this book is a must-have.

eBay 101: Selling on eBay For Part-time or Full-time Income
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book from cover to cover, amazed (and wishing I'd had this one with me when I STARTED on Ebay). What author Steve Weber has done with this book is to gather the information that can take sellers years to learn and created a virtual seller's encyclopedia of tips for selling successfully on Ebay. What this means to you - the potential seller on Ebay - is the chance to hit the ground running, avoid embarrassing blunders and come across as a professional seller, minimizing fumbles and keeping your customers happy and your profit margin...extremely profitable.
For the relatively modest price of this book, you'll get the expertise of an Ebay seller who has racked up $1.4 million dollars in sales to 130,000 customers. I"m surprised by how much he was willing to disclose, the kind of secrets many sellers hold near and dear.
Not only that but Weber had the wisdom to let other top sellers and users weigh in. They have written specific articles on such important areas as taking great photos, writing top descriptions, 10 major auction mistakes and how to milk market niches for maximum profits (rare fishing lures, vintage clothing or old video games are some examples.
Before you create your first listing, Weber suggests you do some research that I'd call "due diligence" or "taking a trial run to get a feel for Ebay." How do you do this? By being a buyer and actually bidding on items or using the Buy it Now feature to purchase 10 items. I think this is brilliant strategy, allowing potential sellers to get a feel for the buyer's end of things. You'll get a feel for dealing with someone you've probably never met face to face and the sense of novelty that comes from using an online auction site. Once you've been in a buyer's shoes, you have instant knowledge that should make you a better seller.
I wish I had the space to describe all the sections and related material in this book. From registering as a user to timing your auction, expanding your business and finding inventory, Weber explains every aspect of the Ebay selling process.
Consider this: he started out with $80, bought four bags of items and doubled his investment after selling only half of those items! From there he went on to sell enough to move from a tiny one-bedroom apartment to a nice house, all by himself. He makes a convincing case for the fact that if he can do it, so can you. I'm convinced, especially since I've used similar techniques and I know they work - and work well.
PLEASE NOTE: I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing another of Mr. Weber's books, Plug Your Book. I'm including that information here for full disclosure but I have not ever been paid for any reviews of these books and my opinion is expressly my own. Both books are wonderful. If you are a writer, bookseller or interested in exploring ways to market yourself, books or sell on Ebay, Mr. Weber's books are "must reads". eBay 101: Selling on eBay For Part-time or Full-time Income, Beginner to PowerSeller in 90 Days
