Ron came to our PR agency over a year ago to help us as we struggled to get our clients to understand and implement social media. After Ron was kind enough to let me read the manuscript of "Read This First," confusion reigned no more for me. Social media -- how it came about and why every business needs to do it -- became crystal clear.
Read This First is written in a very conversational tone (much like the good blogger that Ron is) that will reach anybody with a few hours and an open mind. The ideas are exciting and accessible to anyone who wants to grow their business in today's connected world. Ron provides a brief history of how we came to this new era of incredible potential and promise, and how executives should best approach the opportunities in front of them for their organizations.
Because so many people have so much trouble getting their heads around the mind-boggling changes that social media represents, I tell everyone to not just read this first, read this TWICE.

What is your Company's Online Reputation?
If you want proof that business communication has changed forever, just type your company's name into a search engine like Google or Yahoo and behold its online reputation. The results are frequently jarring because instead of finding brand messages carefully crafted by those on your payroll, most executives find a mishmash of content created by those who aren't--new influencers who are using New Media technologies to share their thoughts about your products and services. If you want to learn how to monitor and manage your online reputation, if you'd like to know how to properly influence these new influencers, if you'd like to hire employees who are well equipped to work in our new online world, you need to Read This First.
You will learn:
*Why you can no longer control your brand and why you shouldn't try.
*Low cost, low risk, step-by-step methods to bring New Media into your organization. *How to use free, web-based tools to increase employee productivity while enhancing your company's online reputation.
*How New Media is the most measurable medium in the history of corporate communications.
*Case studies of real companies, big and small, using Social Media.

Perspectives on Social Media Marketing Review

Perspectives on Social Media Marketing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Social Media has almost exploded in recent two to three years, and has suddenly become the main way of consuming information online for the significant number of Internet users. Consequently it has become increasingly important for all sorts of organizations to adjust their online marketing strategies in order to take a full advantage of the power of social media. In the early days attempts by even the largest corporations to reach their users through social media were haphazard at best (see for instance Twitter Power 2.0 for a few examples of good and bad use of Twitter by several companies), but over the last year or so this mode of marketing has really come a long way and has matured considerably.
"Perspectives on Social Media Marketing" aims to bring some up to date insights into this new mode of marketing. The book is organized around 89 topics/questions. Each question is answered by Stephanie Agresta, who represents the perspective of marketing agencies, and by B. Bonin Bough, who represents a brand perspective. These two seem to be quite familiar with this topic and are able to respond to each of the questions in a fairly informative and detailed manner. Nonetheless, the responses feel more like sales pitches than educationally motivated explanations. I find this rather odd, since I presume that whoever is reading this book is already "sold" on the whole idea of social media marketing. The responses are also filled with some mild jargon and overhyped ideas and terms. There are a few useful actionable hints and strategies, but these tend to be few and far between.
Overall, this is a useful book if you are new to social media marketing, as it will provide you with some basic ideas of what this kind of marketing is all about. However, if you are considering launching a social media campaign, or are interested in promoting your product or service through social media, then you may be disappointed in the amount of useful advice that this book contains.

PERSPECTIVES ON SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING addresses 89 of the most compelling and important issues that marketers face on a regular basis when it comes to social media, providing advice and insight on how to deal with each issue from the perspective of two thought leaders in this arena: Stephanie Agresta from Porter Novelli and B. Bonin Bough from PepsiCo. Together, they discuss what social media is, how it has changed the marketing landscape, how to implement a tactical and strategic social media plan across your organization, how to best measure the ROI of a social media campaign, and more.

YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts Review

YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a thorough introduction to creating videos for YouTube, aimed at the absolute beginner. It is especially strong on explaining how to tell a story and on how to behave yourself as part of the YouTube community. The emphasis is on making art, not on making money.
It is not a techie book. There's a long chapter called "99-Cent Film School" that covers the mechanics of creating a video, but it's very basic and deals mostly with the selection of equipment, with some discussion of editing. The book is unusual in that it is not Macintosh-centric: the authors use Windows and claim there's no need to consider Macintosh because Windows is cheaper and has more software.
The authors summarize their position on p. 248 as "Don't watch the media, be the media." This is a good sound bite and gives the flavor of the book, although it is not really accurate since they encourage watching and commenting on the videos of other YouTubers. (Besides, if no one watched the media, would there be any media left?) The authors detest traditional media, especially television, and they detest much of the new media too. This doesn't have much impact on the book, except to cause occasional outbursts of gratuitous nastiness. For example, on p. 244 we read, "Social networking provides websites to people who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer." Although there's some truth in this, it is unnecessary to state it here. The isolation from other media also gives the impression that YouTube is its own universe, with no connection to anything else.
The nastiness comes out in concentrated form in the Preface, which attempts to explain "Why You Should Buy This Book" by trashing the competition. Be sure to skip this section of the book! It's not representative of the rest and reading it will turn you off from an otherwise-good book.
There are a number of rough spots that could have been improved by better copy-editing. The book is somewhat rambling. Although it does explain all the YouTube and computer jargon, it may use a term many times before defining it. For example, the term "partner" is used throughout the book but is not explained until Chapter 11. The index is often no help; "partner" is not in the index as such (you have to look under YouTube Partners), and acronyms such as RSS and NLE are not indexed at all.
YouTube URLs are cryptic pseudo-random character strings, and a Very Good Feature of the book is that the authors have placed every URL as a hyperlink on one page on their web site, so you just have to click it. This is not quite as good as feature as it could be, because the cryptic URLs on that page are not annotated other than with a cross-reference number such as "URL 9.3"; if each had a short description or title the page would be easier to navigate and would also be great for browsing.

Social Networking Spaces (Beginning) Review

Social Networking Spaces (Beginning)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a must for the majority of us who want to be involved in social media, but didn't grow up with peer groups to help us out. The book is written in an engaging, informal style that allows learning without needing to memorize each and every word. Each chapter has a brief intro that tells you specifically what you can hope to gain by going through that chapter. Each ends with a summary Q&A related to the chapter and author's conclusion (brief, usually only 2-4 paragraphs)
For the most part, the chapters/topics are self contained; you can read them in any order or you can go sequentially. Personally, I chose the one topic at a time route, using my learning interests in the field as a guide. At this point, I have read and reread a few of the chapters, and browsed the remaining ones that I have not yet "grown into".
Prior to starting the book, I had signed up for a Twitter account, but not done much of anything with it. However, since I was intrigued by the way some people/organizations were using this service, I decided to start in the Twitter chapters (6 and 7). This book was a major help in getting me started: through it, I learned how to post a profile picture and the basics of Twitter etiquette and how to link to other services I might want to work with, including my existing blog. I also learned about short URLs, a piece of knowledge that in and of itself may be worth the price of this book.
After reading the Twitter chapters, I went back and read through the forwards and Chapter 1. The actionable possibilities put forth in the first chapter are truly mind opening, but you almost need to dabble with some of the media in the rest of the book before it really strikes you. Suggestion: skim through Chapter 1, and come back to it after any time you have done some toe dipping in one of the later sections.
The two chapters on Blogging would be very helpful to the novice, particularly one who had little experience with any type of page set up experience. They take you through step by step how to set up a working blog on Google. At the time I read these chapters, I had started a blog on Wordpress and had already worked through some of the kinks of blog set up. However, some of the suggestions for further development in the Q&A and conclusions helped me to improve my blog.
The LinkedIn chapters were the next I gravitated to, and although I had had a LinkedIn account for several years (which I had perpetuated half heartedly), I learned several things about using LinkedIn and available features that have since helped me make my page more robust and join additional groups.
The Meetup Chapter was also a good refresher for this social media program that also has a real face to face component. Again, I had been a member of Meetup for 4-5 years, had actually been a member of several Meetup groups, yet still found that there were a few tricks about the site I had not previously taken advantage of.
The big test was Facebook. I had contemplated setting up my own Facebook page for awhile, but for a number of reasons, had put this action on hold. While undertaking an Emerging media class, the time now seemed right. Chapter 3 is a great examination of the "nuts and bolts" of Facebook for one who has never attempted this media before. I recommend it thoroughly for all newbies. (In fact, I just went back and viewed it again a few minutes ago, and found another option for messaging that I had not known existed.)
To take a slight detour here, I think that the above hits on one of the highly useful aspects of "Social Networking Spaces", namely that you won't absorb everything you read before you try, but you can always go back and check.
But back to Facebook....there are 3 other chapters on Facebook, and they are particularly useful to those who want to use this resource as more than a place to interact with your friends. If you want to tell your story (or someone else's) or find out if your business can benefit by using Facebook, these chapters are a must view.

I'm not yet ready for Flickr or Youtube (except as a viewer) or Ning or Virtual Worlds or some of the other topics covered by the author, but I'm sure that when I am ready, this book will be a great starting point.

YouTube for Business: Online Video Marketing for Any Business
Average Reviews:

I loved this book. It is well outlined and well written. And it is very topical in today's business marketing world where small businesses can use YouTube to enhance their online marketing efforts significantly. The book has 16 chapters divided into the following five parts:
I. Marketing your business online with YouTube (1-3)
II. Producing Your YouTube Videos (4-8)
III. Managing Your YouTube Videos (9-11)
IV. Working with YouTube Video Blogs (12-13)
V. Promotion and Monetization (14-16)
And each Part is concluded with a "Profile" which applied what had been discussed in the chapters preceding it. I found these profiles very helpful and informative. Not too long ago I read and reviewed "Show Me: Marketing with Video on the Internet" (ISBN: 1884230016). I had high hopes for that book and wanted it to be like the instant book being reviewed. Unfortunately it fell short of my expectations. However, after reading "YouTube for Business" this other book might be a good companion read?
Internet marketing today seems to be about putting together successful ways to generate traffic to your company or nonprofit Web site. You can do this by performing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. You can do this by creating lots of content pages in your Web site. You can do this by writing articles and posting them on free article-posting sites online. Each article will have a by-line directing traffic back to your site. You can generate traffic by creating one (or more than one) blog which will direct traffic back to your site. And after reading this book you can generate traffic by creating simple videos you post on YouTube that will direct viewers back to your Web site.
The really neat thing about YouTube traffic generation is that it not only generates traffic, but it allows you to get your face and voice in front of people as though you were standing there talking with them. You can become three-dimensional rather than just two.
My favorite part of the book was Part II where the author goes into some depth into how to produce videos for posting on YouTube. And it is these same videos you will want to paste into your main Web site and your blog posts. I highly recommend this book for just about any small business owner who wants to make a name for themselves better and quicker. 5 stars!
PS. Take a look at the Search Inside material offered by Amazon so you can examine the Table of Contents of this book and more fully understand what this book has to offer.

Plug Your Business Marketing on MySpace, YouTube, blogs and podcasts and other Web 2.0 social networks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. Thus it only gets a 4 star rating from me. Maybe I feel this way because I've read the author's other book entitled Plug Your Book and this book comes off being very similar? Maybe it was because it was 142 pages and has a sales price of almost $20? Or maybe it was because I have read other books that cover much of the same material and they go into more depth?
The book is comprised of the following 14 chapters:
1. Introduction
2. MySpace Buzz
3. Building Your Web Site
4. Blogging for Business
5. Blog Tours
6. Multimedia
7. Tag - You're It!
8. The Social Jungle
9. Social Media, Social Search
10. Syndicating Your Content
11. Revenue from Your Site
12. Pay-Per-Click Advertising
13. Power Tools
14. Ethics of Online Marketing
I found Chapter 2 to be the best in the book. I can see how a rock band or an author can promote themselves at MySpace. In fact, they do successfully. But I'm not yet convinced that MySpace is really conducive to marketing a small business. It would have been nice if the book had clearly explained at least a few success stories regarding small businesses marketing on MySpace. By reading the book I am left thinking it is just a hope to successfully market a small business using that social network.
I liked Chapter 3 and found it to be a good introduction to putting together a Web site. I recommend reading The Web Savvy Writer (ISBN: 0977830403) if you are interested in a more in depth coverage on the subject. I liked Chapter 4 and also found it to be a good introduction to blogging for business. For more on the subject I recommend reading Ted Demopoulos' books (ISBN: 1419584359 and ISBN: 1419536451). And I liked chapters 7 and 8, but for a more in depth coverage I recommend reading Sell Your Book on Amazon (ISBN: 1432701967).
The "Recommended Reading" list at the end of this tome included some interesting books. I would have liked to have seen Marketing to the Social Web (ISBN: 0470124172) and Marketing in the New Media (ISBN: 1551807319) included as well, but they weren't. As you can see from my review that this book covers a lot of ground in just a few pages. I highly recommend it as a lead-in to many other books. 4 stars!

Get massive exposure for your business, no special computer skills needed.-- Quit wasting money on traditional advertising and marketing campaigns.-- Blog to connect with customers and generate word of mouth.-- Boost your visibility with Google; use MySpace for viral marketing.-- Ignite word of mouth with Web social networksNo matter what kind of business you have, its success depends on two things: It must serve a need, and you must find customers. Most new businesses fail simply because the right people never heard about them. And this is the paradox for entrepreneurs: People aren't paying attention to traditional marketing and advertising anymore. But free advertising is alive and well.Whatever you want to call it --- buzz, word of mouth, peer-to-peer or viral marketing -- you can't just manufacture it. You must earn it -- by engaging your target market.Fortunately, there is a very straightforward, ethical way of gaining this free exposure: by participating on social networks. These social media sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, and other Web 2.0 networks, allow members to create profiles of themselves (or their business) with the objective of meeting like-minded friends and partners who share the same passions and goals. The individuals participating on these networks might be searching for anything -- a mentor, a ride to work, a date for Saturday night, recommendations for a movie, a new job, or perhaps they want to meet someone who's an expert in their hobby. For business owners who learn to use them, social networks can provide valuable free exposure to a worldwide pool of new customers and fans. These social networks have turned traditional marketing on its head. No longer must a business owner scrape together a huge pile of cash for a marketing campaign, then pray that it works. Hundreds of thousands of businesses, large and small, are leveraging social networks to lure new customers, often at virtually no cost. And unlike most traditional advertising, social networking can pay dividends for years to come because it forges a strong link between you and consumers, enabling your biggest fans to become evangelists for your business.Internet social networks allow entrepreneurs to build their business one customer at a time. It's the same as having a "street team" pounding the pavement for you. Just as your street team might pass out fliers about a show or new product, your MySpace friends can forward the same type of information using electronic messages to a much larger audience. When you're successful, your loyal customers begin spreading the word for you, generating true word of mouth. Entrepreneurs can no longer depend on interruption-based ads, such as commercials and junk mail, which force consumers to stop what they're doing and pay attention. But with social networking, you can influence these consumers precisely at the point where they're engaged. In the old days, with postal direct mail or telephone cold-calling, your chance of getting a response from someone who didn't know you was about 2 percent -- and that's if you had a big marketing budget and were doing everything right. But today, the social-networking skills described in this book can result in response rates of 80 percent or more. What are you waiting for? Put these revolutionary ideas to work today! --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

I have come across this book in my local Borders bookstore just today and as a huge fan and frequent user of YouTube I must say that I like it a lot. The book is perfectly suitable for beginners and I believe that it was written with them in mind. However, because of its pretty comprehensive character, it can serve well as a basic reference manual for all other readers as well.
