As a Kindle author, with three novels available and others in progress, I found Stephen Windwalker's work invaluable. This, and the companion work on marketing to Kindle readership, have provided great support and keen insight on preparing my work to better leverage colophon and copyright issues. The step-by-step support on the publishing process answered many questions that were not present on the Digital Text Platform site. If you plan to publish a Kindle book, or already have one, check out these easy to follow tips (20 of them). I'm delighted that there are more Windwalker tips in progress. It's great to have his works at my back.

What a stroke of luck! I'm half-finished with a book on 16th century history and have culled so many good ideas from this book in such a short time that it's marked up in probably 30 separate places. I learned so much about handling the manuscript in Word; I wish I had this kind of instant help when I wrote my first book four years ago. Things are really changing in the publishing industry and I'm now ready to tackle the promotion for my book.

Penny C. Sansevieri is a no nonsense thinker and writer. Beginning her career as an author ('Candlewood Lake', 'The Cliffhanger' etc) she faced the beast of competition in the publishing world, and instead of caving in, she took control, learned all the ins and outs of getting books published, and shared that hard won information and experience in such highly successful books as 'Get Published Today: An Insider's Guide to Publishing Success' and 'From Book to Bestseller: An Insider's Guide to Publicizing and Marketing Your Book!'. Now she has synthesized all of that information in this newest book that is the most complete guide to marketing books on the Internet available.
Sansevieri does not waste the reader's time with puffery or examples of her own successes. Instead she opts to jump right to the essentials, giving a nod to the importance of the Internet as a tool of communication and commerce. She doesn't merely suggest such valuable skills as creating a website for authors to attract attention, she carefully and very thoughtfully provides exact guidelines for squeezing the most benefits from the time involved in design, wording, linking, blogging, networking, virtual book events (and in the age when bookstores become less friendly as opportunities for authors to read and sell their books during spicy evenings, this is a unique concept) - all the techniques she has mined and understands thoroughly.
Sansivieri's book RED HOT INTERNET PUBLICITY contains more useful web resources, addresses of the best blog sites and web design and tool sites, and pieces of sound advice in this brief 200 pages than any on the market today. She is the epitome of a user-friendly teacher and expert and her writing contains not only valuable information and insights but wit to boot! For all authors in search of the keys to the value of Internet promotion, this excellent book will be an exceptional value. Grady Harp, June 07

The Web-Savvy Writer: Book Promotion With A High-Tech Twist, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

What a lovely book. I'm really glad I purchased a copy for myself. I'm a SCORE volunteer counselor and quite often my clients ask about Web sites and Web site design, and how to incorporate them into their small business' marketing plan. This book is the one that comes to my mind when I recommend a tome for them to read so I don't have to go into a long-winded sermon on the ins-and-outs of building a Web site. The other book I like a lot is Susan Daffron's book entitled Web Business Success (ISBN: 0974924504).
The book has 12 chapters, but I haven't listed them below. The list below includes the topics covered in the book that I have prioritized and grouped the way I would have liked the book to read.
1. How to Design a Web site
2. Add a Blog
3. Add a Podcast
4. Add an Ezine
5. Create eBooks
6. Create audio CDs and DVDs
7. Learn about Shopping Cart technology
8. Learn about RSS technology
9. Learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
10. Learn about Online Advertising
11. Learn about Online Marketing
12. Learn about Using Amazon to Promote and Sell Your Book
My favorite topics were 1, 2, 5, 9 and 11. In my humble opinion they are the meat to putting together a Net presence using a Web site. It is these topics that I recommend my SCORE clients focus on when reading the book. I've tried the ezine thing, and I have found it to be a waste of time and effort. CDs and DVDs are beyond me at this time. But maybe in the future I might consider them as a great marketing vehicle. I think shopping cart technology is good for a retail shop. But an author with only one or two titles may want to skip it. I don't find much use for RSS technology since I don't go heavy on reading blogs. Maybe when there get to be a number of good blogs to read, then I might recommend RSS.
I have recently read a few books on using Amazon to promote and sell POD books. I think they were written after this book, and they seem to do a better job covering topic #12 above. Maybe the material on Amazon in this book is a little dated? But I saw a lot of good stuff on Amazon in this book. Consider also checking out Shepard's book entitled Aiming at Amazon (ISBN: 093849743X) and Weber's book entitled Plug Your Book! (ISBN: 0977240614).
Don't think that this book is only good for authors who want to use the Net to market their book. The principles and techniques beautifully explained in this book are equally applicable to promoting any business. So any wanta-be entrepreneur that doesn't know much about the Net or Web sites will do themselves a favor by getting this book, reading it, and then studying it. 5 stars!

Have you ever thought of writing a book -- for yourself, for your family, to promote your business, to share your story or experience with the world? If your answer is "yes" to any of these than this is the book for you. Author Sonja Hakala compiles, in one place, an overview of all the major publishing options -- independent publishing, private publishing, self-publishing, traditional publishing and electronic publishing -- so readers get an understanding of each in order to achieve exactly what the title promises. Hakala's 196-page book is packed with useful information including the history of publishing and how to really assess a book from the inside and out in order to make sure yours is up to par with traditional publishing standards. Having worked in publishing for 25 years, Hakala knows the industry and she has "put her money where her mouth is," so to speak, by independently publishing her book through her own company, Full Circle Press, it is a beautiful testament to those writers who choose to take this route in seeing their book come to light. This book just feels right in your hands and once you open it, you'll find yourself immersed in a world that few writers ever truly understand, yet, Hakala is there to help you navigate it. As a memoir writing instructor and writer myself, I plan to comb the pages of this book for both my own benefit and that of my students. I have already recommended it to those that have completed their memoirs and the great thing about it is Hakala's tome offers something for both those who have a story to share with the greater world and those who want to limit their audience to their immediate families. As far as I'm concerned this is a must-have for any writer or lover of books, for that matter. Material on the history of book publishing and the design of books really has a greater audience. Having heard Hakala speak in person, this is the opportunity I've been waiting for -- a chance to soak up all the knowledge she has to share at my own leisure. I better stop now so you'll have a chance to go buy this information packed book and begin to write your book, your way!

Holy IT: A Guide to Finding and Doing Your Thing - Your 'IT' (Volume 2) Review

Holy IT: A Guide to Finding and Doing Your Thing - Your 'IT' (Volume 2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What are you doing about what you aren't doing? This is the jump-start question Scott Wittig asks his readers in his book, Holy IT!: A Guide to Finding and Doing Your Thing. Wittig challenges his readers to take that uncomfortable first step in determining what they really want to do with the rest of their lives and then do it! According to Wittig, all you have to do to determine your IT is 1)Identify 2)Predict 3)Determine 4)Execute. Wittig borrowed these steps from Driver's Ed. He also emphasizes that your IT must have the 3 P's: passion, but must also include purpose and be a project (put stuff on your calendar you can do!) or it'll never get off of the ground.
Holy IT! is a fun read packed with quotes (mostly from John Maxwell) and graphics. You can probably read this text in one sitting and start working on your IT immediately afterwards. This book is also a workbook with lots of available white space to take notes and to GET QUIET. Wittig discusses how important meditating and reflecting on your IT is so you can shut out the other voices and get to work on what YOU need to do. Wittig advocates forming a mastermind group. Forming and getting the most out of mastermind groups is another key element in successfully manifesting your IT. In these groups the members forge a safe place to discuss issues and problems. Members offer feedback and accountabilty, which is necessary when you're starting out on your IT and need reinforcement that your path is the correct one to follow. In fact, one of his mastermind partners who is a graphic designer created Wittig's eye-catching book cover of an acorn.
The acorn is a symbol of growth, but it's also part of the squirrel's story in Chapter 10: The Law of the Squirrel. If a squirrel is indecisive and darts back into the road because he thinks he can get a bigger acorn, then he most likely to get squashed by a car. The analogy works: if you're indecisive about your IT, you'll never get past "go." Wittig reminds us to get rid of our friends who are naysayers, the "toppers" (who try to best you at every turn) and stick to the cheerleaders, even if they are outnumbered by the previous groups.
Wittig wants his readers to achieve clarity as well as take a honest look at themselves. Many times, the IT isn't far from home. Tom Rath says, "You cannot be everything you want to be-but you can be more of who you already are." Coach K of Duke University echoes this sentiment with, "Look in your house, not out of your window." On the flip side, Wittig also makes you ask yourself, "How can I drop something and hand that over to someone else?" and "What is it that I've always done (that's kind of bugged me) that I could just quit doing?"
Written in a down-to-earth style that is exactly how Wittig speaks in person, this fun-to-read book with short chapters is infused with positivity. The book of course mirrors Scott Wittig's IT of helping others achieve. One of my favorite take-aways was how Wittig tells us that when we switch careers our previous career helps us with what will do now. And as as someone who has switched careers from a retail environment to a creative writing one, Wittig provides much-needed validation to everyone who wants to know that their previous jobs weren't a waste of time or effort.

Writing and Publishing: The Librarian's Handbook Review

Writing and Publishing: The Librarian's Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a wonderful book for librarians who have any interest at all in writing for publication. With contributions from about 50 librarians from every sector of librarianship, there's not a writing-related topic that I can think of that isn't discussed in at least a passing manner except indexing and it's probably in there and I just missed it.
I work with a lot of colleagues who are panic-stricken at the idea of having to do research and write for promotion and tenure. (Something I've always found perplexing since so many of us have undergraduate degrees in English and History!) I wish I could buy ten copies and pass them out to each one looking at going up for tenure in a few years. Unfortunately, however, the publisher -- the American Library Association -- is charging $65.00 for a book that should be $19.95; $29,95 at the most. (Oh, I almost forgot, if you've paid your $130.00 personal annual membership to ALA, you can get it for the bargain price of $58.50.) One would think that if any title would be subsidized by ALA to be affordable to its members, this would be it... but, nooooo. ALA keeps on squeezing!
Still, Carol Smallwood has pulled together a marvelous collection. There are nearly 100 articles; here's a sample: "Writing for Tenure"; "Becoming an Expert: Find Your Niche"; "Writing with Colleagues: Strategies for Getting the Work Done"; "Librarian Writing Groups"; "Working with Book and Journal Editors to Revise Your Manuscript"; "Preparing for Publication: Strategies for Identifying Potential Library Journals"; "The End of the Beginning: Learning from Rejection"; "Self-Publishing"; "Twenty-Five Years at BookExpo"; "Publishing Mystery Fiction"; "Writing for Reference Books"; "Tips for Compiling a Publishable Bibliography"; "Press Kits and News Releases"; "Writing a Newspaper Column"; "Book Reviews"; "Peer-Reviewing"; "Ten Tips for Becoming a Successful Restaurant Reviewer"; "Writing Video Reviews"; "Freelance Magazine Writing for Librarians"; "Crafting a Compelling Bibliographic Essay"; "Textbook Writing"; "Writing for Children's Magazines"; "The Public Library as Picture Book Publisher"; "The Poet Librarian"; "Blogging Tips for Librarians"; "Librarians as Personal Bloggers"; "Writing for Library Websites"; "Confessions of an Amazon.com Reviewer"; "Editing Books"; and, "Editing a Library Association Magaziine," among many others!
ALA has done a good job with the physical format and layout, as the book has an attractive cover and sturdy soft binding; the content is practical, helpful, and diverse; and, specific topics are presented one-to-three pages at a time, grouped into broad topical sections. The text is very readable/skimable in a double columned format with a good-sized font.
Highly recommended for personal, professional reading and library collections of all kinds for the resident librarians to have the opportunity check-out and use!

Often in self-help books utility and inspiration are mismatched. You either leave the read full of inspiration with no clear next steps or you have too much information with no hope of achievement. Well not in this case, the title and theme alone allow you to honor and revel in your femininity and feel powerful. The author was creative and provided an easy read with tangible how-to examples and moments. The whimsical picture was set from beginning to end while highlighting her steps and struggles though the process. The author does not mislead you but rather her honesty helps you to visualize and embrace the true obstacles that lie ahead. While the struggles are clear, the rewards appear realistic and achievable..."Success in self-publishing will take you out of the ranks of undesirable and unknown." Finally, a real strength of humor and helpfulness makes this a great self-help book. As someone who has never had a real interest in self-publishing the insights left me with a genuine sense of something that I too can and may do one day.

The Public Domain Publishing Bible: How to Create Royalty Income for Life, 2nd Updated Edition Review

The Public Domain Publishing Bible: How to Create Royalty Income for Life, 2nd Updated Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Andras M. Nagy is a self-proclaimed gambler. The enterprise described in his book The Public Domain Publishing Bible is not to be undertaken by the faint at heart.
Public domain titles contain initial publication dates before 1923. According to U.S. copyright law, anyone can republish these titles for profit. Nagy stresses that it is imperative to add original content to these works in terms of illustrations, footnotes, introductory material, covers, etc. Otherwise, you will be competing with numerous versions of these titles republished without modification. He states that sometimes Amazon.com will not even pick up your version if you merely republish the text as is.
The field is also littered with what Nagy calls "copyright bullies." These individuals claim that they own the copyright to a public domain title. Their claim is invalid, but they will attempt to intimidate you by suggesting legal action. In the very least, their aim is to get you to cease publishing the work. Nagy urges you to stand your ground and demand proof of ownership. Personally, I don't know if I would want to run into potential legal problems. Nagy recommends hiring the U.S. Copyright Office to investigate the copyright status of a title before publishing it. It is a financial drawback at $150 an hour.
To make money Nagy uses print-on-demand (POD). If he has the only in-print version of a public domain title, he uses Ingram's Lightning Source to take advantage of the wholesaler's extensive distribution network. If he's competing against other republished versions, Amazon's CreateSpace has lower set-up fees. He recommends using free software applications such as Scribus, Open Office and Gimp to cut start-up costs. Nagy also discusses book scanning for those not interested in typesetting. Optical character recognition (OPR) scans the entire physical book allowing text to be directly inputted into a word processing program. You can hire a book scanning service or invest in the equipment to create your own scans.
Nagy goes on to explain publicity tactics for promoting your public domain catalog. His main focus is on creating a web site that is search engine optimized (SEO). He explains off-the-page SEO techniques such as blogger reviews, directory submissions and article & press release distribution. On-the-page efforts entail an ALT tag for every image, keywords in page titles and anchor tags for inbound links.
At times, Nagy drifts away from his subject when he writes about creating a screenplay or the IndieBound movement. These sections would have been better off as appendices instead of breaking up the narrative.
Nagy's 10 basic rules for public domain publishing are:
1. Be selective in what you publish
2. Add creative modifications
3. Sell wholesale
4. Republishing titles as is use CreateSpace
5. Do your own set-up & design
6. Use reasonable freelancers for what you can't do
7. Take a long term view
8. Learn to work with Amazon & Lightning Source
9. Work with independent bookstores
10. Write what you know. Stick to fields you like.
Overall, this is a comprehensive guide on how to republish public domain titles with a realm of useful resources and pertinent web sites.

Show Me About Book Publishing: Survive and Thrive in Today's Literary Jungle Review

Show Me About Book Publishing: Survive and Thrive in Today's Literary Jungle
Average Reviews:

I'm not an expert by any stretch. But I've read almost every book on this subject. So I have a pretty good frame of reference.
This book is somewhat promotional for the services of the authors. Subtle but there are references scattered throughout the book that they can help you. So some of the advice is skewed toward that aim I believe. And I don't agree with all the advice. It definitely seems to be for someone going the traditional bookstore route. Common sense info on cover design and editing importance. I belive it's a bit light on content. Only 150 pages if you leave out the resources section.
And I don't think all the advice is good. They downplay POD. They make it sound like it's impossible to produce a decent looking POD book. I still think the best option for the small self-publisher/author I've found is going through lighting source. That way you maintain control and profit. They don't really talk about it. Ithink there is one sentence about it.
At one point they mention that you should price your book according to what's inside. Well, the people looking to buy it can't read it first, so you had better price it according to what your market is willing to pay for books in that category.
It seem's to really miss the boat with fulfillig on the "survive and thrive in TODAY'S literary jungle." This one's going back.

Plug Your Book Online Book Marketing for Authors, Book Publicity through Social Networking Review

Plug Your Book Online Book Marketing for Authors, Book Publicity through Social Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was excited to get this book since I wanted new ways to "plug" my book. Currently I have an ebook and the subtitle of "Online Book Marketing for Authors" got me to take a look at Weber's book.
The copyright date is 2007 and since then a lot has changed. In fact he has a section on social marketing. It is all about MySpace. There is no mention of Facebook. To Steve's credit he has set up a site (blog) with updates and there he does have posts about Facebook and social marketing. This book, however needs an updated edition.
This isn't necessarily a bad book if you want to focus on marketing your book through Amazon, which is what most of the book is focused on. If that's your goal then this is a good book to get. The writing and layout of the book is good and makes it easy to read.
Bottom line is that the subtitle should be "Online Book Marketing Through Amazon and MySpace", and it is in need of a serious update/revision.
