eBay Quick Steps
A book review by Frank Dobrowolski
May 12, 2005
by Carole Matthews & John Cronan
Published by McGraw-Hill/Osborne
ISBN 0-07-225506-4 2004 240 pages
List price: $16.99 On Amazon: $11.55 +S/H
This is a short book, with wide margins and many vivid color illustrations and tables. As a result it is a quick read - per its title. It has a simple, direct approach which works well for eBay beginners and novices. It also contains some information that likely would help advanced users.
I like the illustrated, annotated Walk through of an eBay Transaction
1.Prospective seller registers to sell an item on eBay
2.Takes photos of object to sell and writes a description of it
3.Enters the description, photos, payment terms, shipping information, and other supporting material into eBay's auction selling form
4.Track the item as buyers start bidding on it
5.The buyer registers to participate in the auction
6.Buyer finds the item and bids on it
7.Buyer wins the auction and connects with seller to verify the details and the buyer pays the seller
8.Seller sends the package per the shipping terms specified
9.Buyer receives the item
10.Buyer and Seller provide feedback about each other in this transaction.
The Find Your Way around eBay chapter begins with a page-filling illustration that is typical of this book. The eBay home page is shown and eight areas are picked with a comment on each. The chapter continues with more large figures and sidebar "Tips" and "notes".
One page is filled with a table that lists the type of auction, gives a description and notes requirements. For example:
*Auction - Buy It Now [Fixed Price]
*Description - Offers the item for a given price and there is no auction
*Requirement - Seller must have a feedback rating of at least 30 and be a registered user for at least 14 days of be ID Verified.
The guidance on ID Verified contains 11 steps and one figure, one Note and one Tip.
The following chapters are similarly presented in easy to follow text with numerous colorful illustration, tables and sidebars. Chapter 9 presents information I have not seen this in other books on eBay and it is done well here. The Chapter
has sections entitled
*Detect and Report Account theft
*Use Buyer Fraud-Protection Measures
*File a Fraud Alert
*Set up a Bidder Alert
*Block Bidders or Buyers
*Report Unwelcome Buyers
*Use Additional Resources
a.Security Center
b.Law Enforcement & Other Resources
This may be the best book on eBay I have seen for beginners and novices in using eBay. Advanced users probably would find some information that they could use.

Starting an Online Business All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback))

This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.

Django 1.2 e-commerce Review

Django 1.2 e-commerce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Django 1.2 E-Commerce" starts with a very ambitious goal: design, develop and deploy a functionam ecommerce web site for the fictional [...] company. Sounds great, doesn't it?
I started flipping through the usual introductory pages explaining what Django is and why use it for a project like this. It was all fairly brief which already led me to believe that knowledge of Django's inner works and basic setup and configuration was required to follow along.
Well, the instructions are not as streamlined as other programming books I've read and it could be fairly tricky to follow the examples and logic if you're not already familiar with how Django works. There are several typos in the example code as well, mostly due to missing spaces between the commands and arguments. Adding to the confusion is the style the author chose to deliver his explanation of specific code changes, displaying snippets of code that will leave the reader wondering what specific file is being discussed.
Now, if none of these things sound scary to you, you'll be happy to know that the project itself is fairly well designed and worth your time. It was also the first time I saw an example of integrating Django with Google Checkout to set up a "shopping cart" mechanism, and by the time you're done with the second chapter, you will have a very basic but functional ecommerce web site.
The subsequent chapters were a blur, talking about adding external modules and services to enhance your site's searching capabilities as well as exposing the data from your "store" via APIs and generating reports with ReportLab. The author also talks about making use of javascript to add that AJAX-y feeling that we've come to expect of most modern sites and how to take advantage of S3 storage to sell your product.
The last chapter finally walks you through a few different ways you can deploy your final project to the world out there. I thought it was interesting to see Fabric being mentioned as a driver for deployment, as I have been playing with it at work to help me perform a series of tests on several different hosts for QAing purposes. Come to think of it, this may have been the first time I've seen it mentioned in a book, so I'm glad that this project seems to be picking up steam.
Overall, even with the issues of poor proof checking of the source code and the "everything and the kitchen sink" approach to the first chapters, if you're not new to Django and need to get some ideas on how to design and develop an ecommerce website, you may want to check out this book. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.bout+making+use+of+javas

Prepare to Be a Millionaire Review

The previous 4 reviews are by people who are helping to push the book. In other words, pumpers who help authors. When you have a book that utilizes 43 owners telling stories, the information is very lite-weight and superficial. The author should have concentrated on 3-4 owners and obtained more in depth information from them on how they started their business from start to current state. When you try to take into account 43, you are very limited in how much you can tell before you end up with a book the size of an encyclopedia. Thank goodness I found this copy in my library and not a bookstore where I may have had to pay for it.

Social commerce: Quand le e-commerce rencontre le Web d'aujourd'hui (French Edition) Review

Social commerce: Quand le e-commerce rencontre le Web d'aujourd'hui (French Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

If I had to guess, social commerce is the next areato really blow up »-- Mark Zuckerberg, Août 2010

PrestaShop 1.3 Beginner's Guide Review

PrestaShop 1.3 Beginner's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PrestaShop 1.3, Beginner's Guide by John Horton does exactly what is suggested by the title in that it provides a comprehensive and detailed guide to novices looking to set up their own online shops. While it is aimed at total beginners it never talks down to the reader and neither does it merely scratch the surface of the topic requiring you to go off and search for the real valuable information somewhere else. This book takes you from clueless beginner (which I undoubtedly was) to someone equipped with the knowledge, resources and additional support to be quite confident in setting up an effective online retail presence (which I believe I now am).
From the word go, I was caught by the evident enthusiasm of the author and the fact he is clearly such an expert on the subject. I also liked the fact that he laid down his 'seven day challenge' and included some excerpts from his own 'story' throughout the book. Anyone who has even a faint idea about selling products online would undoubtedly benefit from this book as it gives you not just the technical information but the business input too. Likewise, if you already have an idea of what you want to sell and why it is a good product then you have a complete technical guide as to how to make that happen.
It actually helps if you have at least a certain comfort level with some simple computing basics, but even if you don't the processes described are in sufficiently layman's terms to make it easy for almost anyone. I can be quite confident in saying that this book contains pretty much everything you will need to set up a sophisticated and successful online shop. It doesn't go crazy though and go off on any disingenuous tangents by, for example, trying to explain Content Management Systems or some other equally esoteric topic. Overall, I think an excellent balance is achieved.
PrestaShop 1.3, Beginner's Guide is written in a very chatty and engaging style and the author's personality comes through loud and clear - you really do feel like he wants to make it as easy as possible for you to succeed. It is always down-to-earth and although the author clearly knows his topic well, he does go to great lengths to take everything step by step and make it as absolutely logical as possible. The level of detail is sufficient if you have never covered the particular task before. The addition of screen shots is also very convenient and makes the process easier. The 'What just happened' section is particularly good and there are plenty of reassuring summaries throughout so you can feel the book is not just running away with itself and the reader can keep recycling and reprocessing the information. Most importantly, he has done it himself and made a success of it. He has set up over 10 online shops, has been through all the different options, experienced the pitfalls, the highs and lows, and is passing on the very best information and advice possible to a new lucky group of shop owners.
I am personally working in business and found the book full of very solid advice which could applied in many settings. It is also a great introduction to some of the most modern forms of online marketing including the use of Twitter, Facebook, and Google Adwords. One thing I liked was John's regular reference to the need for a strong, viable business case. Prestashop is a magnificent product but will totally fall flat if your basic offering does not create a customer which Peter Drucker famously said was the purpose of business. It is too easy to fly into the detail of a business before taking time to fully understand your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and why people buy from you. Likewise, the author also covers key and hard-to-grasp issues like Search Engine Optimisation which I think he correctly identifies as something readers will need to understand.
I can honestly say that PrestaShop 1.3, Beginner's Guide covers everything you will need. Not only that, John refers to several free resources he himself has written and provides an extensive list of resources at the end of the book. This book is almost encyclopedic in its treatment of how to set up and use Prestashop and it is certainly something that can used in that way. You don't only get Prestashop related material you also get a lot of valuable business advice, of course in a Prestashop context.Another benefit readers will receive is regular pointers to where they can find other free resources also written by the author.
I have to state clearly that John is a long-term friend of mine - to give you an idea we go back to those halcyon days of the Spectrum ZX-81 and the Commodore 64 - yes, we are getting on. Bearing this in mind, I have done my best to write something honest and useful to potential buyers of this book. Although he plays it down, John has always been marvellous with computers and able to effortlessly explain complex technical issues to me, a relative technophobe. Therefore, it does not surprise me he has written something so useful, practical and frankly inspiring.

The book is structured so that following the chapters in order leads to building a fully functioning and live trading PrestaShop. Guidance is also given should you wish to learn or practice your skills in an offline, non-trading environment. Every chapter contains clearly structured and illustrated step-by-step explanation to achieve the goals discussed. Nothing is left for readers to work out themselves, but it would be very simple for them to use the information to go beyond the specific tutorials, should they wish to do so. There is optional additional reading, including more than a dozen specifically written downloadable e-books made available on the book's support website just for readers of PrestaShop 1.3 Beginners Guide. This book is for anybody who wants a fully functioning e-commerce store using PrestaShop. You do not have to have any previous knowledge of PrestaShop or any aspect of e-commerce or business in general. If you do, then you will probably find this guide really valuable as well. The book covers all you need to know about starting your own e-commerce business.

This book can open a person's mind to see how many opportunities actually exist out online. This book is general, which gives a broad view of what is needed in a online business, and what's recommended. But this book is a little out of date, published 2006. This book does not get into the technical aspects of online business, but it does provide enough knowledge to commence a business strategy.

This book doesn't give a lot of information on the actual ins and outs of setting up a company, purchasing inventory, communicating with suppliers, or the actual business aspects of running an online retail store. It is mainly a guideline for how to build your own website to sell products - and it only gives a couple of suggestions for simple e-commerce sites to use. As a matter of fact, it actually kind of seems like a sales pitch for Yahoo! Merchant Solutions. If you want to sell your daughter's friendship bracelets, this is a good purchase. If you are serious about becoming an actual successful web retailer, this is not the book for you.

How to Make Your Own Free Website: And Your Free Blog Too Review

How to Make Your Own Free Website: And Your Free Blog Too
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought Mr. Matthews' ebook on marketing and selling ebooks at the same time I purchased this one. While that one focuses a lot on marketing and selling (duh, right?), this has more in the way of setting up free websites and blogs with little to no knowledge of HTML.
As I just recently self pubbed my first short novel/novella, I wanted to see what I could do setting up a website for little to no money. (I'm the stereotypical cash-strapped writer, lol.) The website I was contemplating setting up was an all modular, drag and drop-type of set up, but I felt the cost on a monthly basis just doesn't work at this point in time.
So I got this book. And it pointed me in directions I never thought about. It discussed certain things about websites I'd never considered. As I already have a free blog, I didn't pay as much attention to that, but I'll re-read because I figure I can only better my blog with more suggestions. :-)
And his advice on using a Google external tool for a domain name - it was the easiest explanation for using that particular tool that I've ever seen.
Well worth the (paltry) price for the ebook version.

eMarketing eXcellence, Third Edition: Planning and optimising your digital marketing (Emarketing Essentials) Review

eMarketing eXcellence, Third Edition: Planning and optimising your digital marketing (Emarketing Essentials)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
e-Marketing eXcellence, third addition, covers the entire scope of e-Marketing:
Objectives - Do you want to sell? build a brand? talk to and or serve customers?
e-Models - e-commerce, communications, online revenue, web2.0.
e-Customers - Who are they? why do they/don't they buy online? how do they buy? how do you build relationships with them? how do they communicate with each other?
Tools - Not just the internet! iDTV, Digital Radio, Mobile etc.
Site design - Establishing the purpose of the site, best practice design, navigation, structure and copywriting.
Traffic building - SEM, display advertising, e-mail, viral, PR.
CRM - Developing lasting relationships with your customers - database marketing, profiling and personalisation.
e-Business - From value chains to value networks; an analysis what's involved in setting up and managing an e-Business.
The main body text is well written, and the depth of coverage for each topic is just right for a book this size.
Throughout the book you'll find the following boxes:
e-Marketing Excellence - Real world case studies of how large corporations have used the topic being discussed in that part of the book.
Practical/Best Practice e-Marketing tip - Specifics on how you can use the topic being discussed in your own e-marketing campaigns.
e-Marketing Insight - Views from corporations, technology providers (e.g. Google), e-Marketing experts to get you thinking in multiple directions.
The book is also littered throughout with high quality charts, graphics and screenshots of actual websites, all in colour, to give you actual examples of how these techniques are being used.
This third edition of the book has extensive coverage on the latest trends in e-Marketing - viral marketing, web2.0 approaches such as social networking and online PR.
One of the highlights of this book, for me, is thorough coverage of the SOSTAC® approach to e-Marketing planning. Created by Paul Smith (who is a co-author of this book), the model provides a structured framework for building your e-Marketing plans. The model can be applied to projects from small to massive. The book concentrates on how to apply the SOSTAC® model specifically to e-Marketing. Essential reading for anyone involved in writing e-Marketing plans.
This book has broadened my knowledge of e-Marketing in a way that I would not have been able to do so without it. I found myself constantly thinking in new directions when reading it. I now have an appreciation of many more aspects of what's involved when planning for, implementing, and testing e-Marketing campaigns, and I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone involved in all aspects (strategizing, managing, implementing) of e-Marketing. The book also serves as an excellent resource for the e-Marketing student.

Best Website: Simple Steps to Successful Websites Review

Best Website: Simple Steps to Successful Websites

A remarkably good book at describing the actual steps. in detail - that need to be completed to build a truly profitable website! I'm surprised no one has been able to write a book like this before. An actual complete guide that steps through; what type of website to start, getting the right domain name, setting up the web server, easily building and managing the website and finally, a number of excellent promotional strategies - that are actually mostly free!!
I measure how much I like a book by how many tabs I place to mark the pages... and I have quite a few marked with this book. Even the "How to Make a $100,000 from Something You Already Have." Chapter isn't hype.. It's not easy to do, but it is a very interesting way to make money online.
Could have used more detail with regard to e-mail marketing.. but I think that is being picky. Very very, good book!! I Highly recommend it!!

Make-Money-Online Series: How to Start Your Online Affiliate Store: Step-By-Step Guide to Making Money Online

As someone that now earns a full-time income being self-employed through online marketing, I know quite a bit about what works and what doesn't. Unfortunately, it took me years to reach this point - through trial and error on my own and by working underpaid internet marketing jobs to learn the ropes. I'm doing great now, but if I would have had the "shortcut" of reading this book when I first started, I can't even imagine where I would be today. Basically, in 78 pages you will learn what took me years to find out the hard way. This isn't some get-rich-quick scheme, so if that's what you're looking for, go elsewhere. But if you want a solid, proven, easy-to-follow system to make you money online, then this is for you. Not only does Blake walk you through everything step-by-step, but he also adds in some related tips which may seem trivial when you read them, but you will be very thankful you followed them later on! (i.e. using webhosting with cpanel). This is a no-nonsense way you can make money online - you will get out of it what you put into it. If you just want to make a little extra cash each month, you can. If you want to work harder and eventually have a full time income through these techniques, you can do that too. It's totally up to you.

How to Make Money Online with eBay, Yahoo, and Google Review

How to Make Money Online with eBay, Yahoo, and Google
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was disappointed in this book because it made me believe that it would be about Yahoo! and Google equally with eBay. However, this book was all about eBay with a tiny sprinkling of Yahoo! and Google here and there -- certainly not enough to include Yahoo! and Google in the title of the book. The book has 29 chapters. It doesn't stop talking about eBay until Chapter 21 then resumes its eBay discussion in Chapter 29.
The book should have been called "eBay 101" or "eBay for Not-So-Dumb Dummies." It does have good information for a complete eBay newbie but I would recommend other books for the non-eBay savvy newcomer like Adam Ginsberg's book: How to Buy, Sell, and Profit on eBay or eBay Powerseller Secrets by Debra and Brad Schepp. In fact, those two books I just mentioned alone should be all you need to get started if you want to make money on eBay.
Pass on this book. It's a rip off. The title is not appropriate and designed to deceive people into believing that the book will give you a strong online selling strategy with a successful mix of eBay, Yahoo!, and Google when that isn't the case. It's all about eBay with a few words dropped in here and there about Yahoo! and Google.
