Greg Jameson begins by telling you the many reasons that you should have a website online. In addition, he provides helpful suggestions for choosing a good domain name. What I fould beneficial are the "types of pages" he says should be included on your site. Questions that I also had that were answered in this book are:
- what are the free ways to generate traffic to a website & the multiple places to get links
- he explains how to do email marketing, what to include, and why it's important
- how you can get usable content for your website, newsletters, etc. He points out a clever trick to find free downloads of
pdf's about any subject which you could utilize to create your own content
- an explanation of what resolution is best for images used on your site & the importance of getting this right
- why creating videos to take advantage of youtube is a smart thing for businesses & how setting up a youtube channel is valuable
to users
- why adding a pop-up written message from within youtube could possibly cause a person to visit your website
- how to get the most from your presence on facebook or position yourself as an expert by blogging
- his description of different problems that your site could face & what one thing you can do to find out these problems have
happened sooner to protect you from revenue losses
But the part of most significance to me was his breakdown of decisions you need to make when dealing with the setup of money collection from customers. These include what you need to make customers comfortable in making a purchase at your site, why your shopping cart choice is so important, and his simplified chart which illustrates what happens when a customer uses his credit card. All-in-all, this is a great book to have. It has so much interesting and unique information that I most definitely would want to own more of Greg Jameson's books. It contains items that can prevent you from making some costly mistakes and ways to create more customers for your site.

This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.

Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days Review

Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days

This book is from a guy that makes a living from creating ads that sell. That is his real job. He does it for online and offline clients. So while he goes about his daily business he amasses tons of information that he eventually decided to put into a book to sell. I don't get the idea at all that this is some guy who makes a career out of writing Internet marketing guides. As you go through the material you begin to realize something: The guy really knows what he is talking about. You can tell by the examples in the book that he does this stuff both offline and online.
The book is very, very good for those wanting to learn marketing techniques online. Honestly it's like a textbook. In many respects he pulls back the curtain on marketing tactics. I found it helpful for understanding why marketers write the way they do. From the long sales copy to bold claim headlines to web page layouts. Sure we all know that headlines matter, buyers like long reads, etc. But Lance explains it in a way that makes sense and gets you thinking how to implement the tactics in your own sites and landing pages.
The book is full of examples from email writing to headlines to layouts. There is so much information on how to create the right advertisement. If you are doing PPC ads and landing pages then this book is for you. If you have a website and are trying to sell something then this book is for you. OK, if you are already making $5K a month then it's probably not for you. But if you are just starting out trying to sell things on the Internet or are making a humble sum of cash then I really believe that a book like this will help. I've read quite a few PPC ebooks and none are close to this. I believe it is because Lance is actually a professional sales copy writer for both online and offline clients. And you know, PPC success is really all salescopy.
You know how marketers will say that you need to do "X" to convert more sales? And you sit there wondering why? And you get the sense that the joker has no clue why either, but he says so because that's what "they" say works, or learned it from someone else, or saw an example from another salespage. Well Lance explains the why, for every step of building a salespage. You'll read through the manual and think "ah, that's why I'm told to do that", or "so that's why this is suppose to convert better". You get the sense that the guy is simply a pro at what he does and has answers for building webpages that sell.

CMS Made Simple 1.6: Beginner's Guide Review

CMS Made Simple 1.6: Beginner's Guide
Average Reviews:

I have been using CMSmadesimple (CMSMS) for 5 years or so. It's a very robust CMS (content management system) that is quite easy to learn in a basic way. To get more out of CMSMS though you need to know a bit more than you can easily pick up from just using the application, visiting the WIKI and user forums.
This book is exactly what a user new to CMSmadesimple would need to jump-start the learning experience. A web developer with more experience but no experience specifically with CMSmadesimple or the Smarty templating engine would also benefit from this book. To be sure, the measured pace of the book is perfect for a neophyte to CMSmadesimple.
The approach taken by the book is to teach you how to install CMSmadesimple and then how to build an example website from scratch using the book as your tutor. It walks you through each and every step, carefully assessing your progress along the way with end-of-chapter quizzes and a great method of delivering the content.
The book follows the procedure of telling you what you are about to do, telling you how to do it then explaining to you what you just did. For block-heads like me, it is the only way I learn well... by reading, doing and recapping.
All the major areas are covered including how to Install CMSMS, how to use the core modules, an understanding of how to use Smarty to build your templates, how to convert other website templates to work with CMSMS, a brief discussion of SEO and how to add e-commerce functionality and a discussion of Users and Permissions. There is a lot of information packed into this slender book. All of the information is presented in a no-nonsense, straightforward manner.
If you prefer reference types of books, this probably won't meet your needs as it does take a tutorial approach and is best consumed in a linear fashion. You -could- use it by jumping around from here to there if you just wanted to discover how to do some specific things such as adding a protected page to your site, easily implementing YouTube videos onto your pages or perhaps how to create a form with various types of input fields. But this book is not a reference book for CMSmadesimple. Rather it is a guided approach to learning the basics, and then some, of CMSmadesimple.
The author makes ample use of screenshots along the way. The code snippets are available from the publishers website, which is fortunate since no CD accompanies the book.
There are not many books dealing with CMSmadesimple and I was thrilled to find one that covered all the essentials in an easy to digest way. I'd highly recommend this to anyone contemplating the building of a website with CMSmadesimple. It will greatly enhance your early experiences with the application and explain some of the concepts that even I didn't have a firm grasp on until reading the book. In particular, the brief but helpful discussion of how the Smarty templating engine works is indispensable information.
I can't think of a better introduction to CMSmadesimple. I wish I'd had this book 5 years ago. It would have accelerated my learning greatly. And as an aside, if you are using WordPress to build websites but blogging is not your primary focus for the website, give CMSmadesimple a good look. It is really slick, has an active user forum and is continually undergoing development.

A remarkably good book at describing the actual steps. in detail - that need to be completed to build a truly profitable website! I'm surprised no one has been able to write a book like this before. An actual complete guide that steps through; what type of website to start, getting the right domain name, setting up the web server, easily building and managing the website and finally, a number of excellent promotional strategies - that are actually mostly free!!
I measure how much I like a book by how many tabs I place to mark the pages... and I have quite a few marked with this book. Even the "How to Make a $100,000 from Something You Already Have." Chapter isn't hype.. It's not easy to do, but it is a very interesting way to make money online.
Could have used more detail with regard to e-mail marketing.. but I think that is being picky. Very very, good book!! I Highly recommend it!!

First of all, let me start by saying that I have been using Yahoo Store since 1998, and have run an ecommerce business full time since 1999, when I quit my day job.
I picked up a copy of this book to give to a friend who was starting up a Yahoo Merchant Solutions site to sell online. I figured it would be a good way to give them a reference guide so that they wouldn't have to ask me 10 million questions about how to add a new product, or how to upload a photo, etc.
I bought the book without even looking inside. But I started flipping through it the day before I was going to give the book away. Once I realized how great the book was, I ended up keeping it and buying a different copy for my friend!
This book covers all the basics for people who don't know much about getting started.
But more importantly, it has a ton of really great high level strategies and tactics that even someone like me who has been using Yahoo Store for almost 10 years can use.
In fact, one specific part of the book about the cross selling feature made me realize I was approaching cross selling all wrong.
I spent about two hours making some changes to my Yahoo Store, and the store made an additional $10,387.42 in cross sells in the 90 days following those changes. (Yes, that's a real number. Any Yahoo Store will run a simple report to look it up, and that's what I just did.)
That's just ONE thing I learned from the book. I have a list of 16 other changes that I am starting to implement because of what I learned.
Ideas like optimizing my photos better, creating more buyer guides, improving my About Us page, improving the checkout pages, etc. And I haven't even re-read the book yet.
In summary: This book is not just for beginners! You're going to find good stuff in it even if you're a pro.

Pro PayPal E-Commerce (Expert's Voice) Review

Pro PayPal E-Commerce (Expert's Voice)
Average Reviews:

The book did a good job of covering everything EXCEPT the Paypal API. It had a smattering of samples in PHP, Java, C#, VB, and Perl up until that point.
Once the PayPal API is discussed, there are only a couple of samples and everything in Java despite the growing (and perhaps exceeding) popularity of PHP for website development. While not entirely the author's fault given the poor shape of PayPal PHP SDK, it was disappointing that so little time and explaination was given on how to use Paypal's API. If you're looking for help integrating PHP with the Paypal API for Website Payments Pro or Express Payment, you're out of luck. This book won't help.
This is unfortunate since the Paypal API is the most complex part of integration and perhaps the reason you would buy a book like this since many of the other integrations such as IPN are fairly easy by comparison.
The book does do a good job of working you through IPN integration, so if that's what you need, then this book will help.
Having had to now try and learn the PayPal API on my own, it does seem like it's fundamentally 'over-complex' and Paypals SDKs do little to hide the complexity. Perhaps the Java SDK is in better shape, but the PHP one is a bear to get configured and working correctly

With over 100 million users, PayPal has more accounts than Discover and American Express combined. Since its inception in 1998, PayPal has quickly grown to become the global standard for online payments and is constantly expanding into new countries, languages, and currencies. PayPal offers a wide range of payment technologies, but it's not always clear which is the best choice for a website. This book gets under the hood to show you how the different technologies work, how to choose the right solution, and how to implement it - complete with real-world examples. This book shows developers how to integrate PayPal directly into websites to make use of its payment technologies. This allows developers, no matter what language they program in, to build shopping carts or similar channel products with PayPal as a payment option. Merchants can also use this book to find out the basics of e-commerce, where PayPal fits in, and how they could take a DIY approach to solving their e-commerce needs.

While I really hate to slam down the authors of the book, this text really offers nothing to readers that isn't in better form elsewhere. The text is ridden with buggy code, incomplete explanations, and the style of coding leaves much to be desired. The "Agile Web Development with Rails" text (also available on [...]) builds nearly the same application (an eCommerce site), but does so while explaining the rails framework as well as offering up a solid reference textbook style for later use.
I teach graduate level computer science, and switched my curriculum to Ruby on Rails this term for my "Complex Websites" course. I reviewed many books, and this one ended up at the bottom of the pile. Sorry.

Make a Fortune Promoting Other People's Stuff Online: How Affiliate Marketing Can Make You Rich

I don't know anyone making a fortune with affiliate marketing, but I do believe it is possible, which is why I bought this book. If you are an affiliate marketer, you might find much of this book repetitive. But, if you are not making a fortune and want to, then this book is for you.
Most of us know it takes a llloooooonnnnnngggg time to make any money from most affiliate programs, and Gardner doesn't tell you you can get rich overnight. I found her information to be true to what everyone else is saying--build a good website (or websites) with great content, find good paying companies to promote and run your affiliate business like---a business. What a concept! (I find many people throw up a few pages of content and a couple of links and then start waiting for the money. As if. . .)
I like this book because there are actual "how-to's" in here--how to set up tracking tools and spreadsheets, how and when to create content, how to promote your business, how to get your website up, when to expand your business, what to do when an affiliate doesn't pay, how to find affiliates, and much more.
If you are looking for get rich quick scams, look somewhere else. If you are looking for a guide to having your own successful affiliate business, get this book.

osCommerce Webmaster's Guide to Selling Online: Increase your sales and profits with expert tips on SEO, Marketing, Design, Selling Strategies, etc.
Average Reviews:

Let's be clear about one thing. The book is not about running a general purpose website that is selling things. It pertains to those sites using the osCommerce software. This provides a programmatic framework with features needed by many small commercial websites.
But it turns out that several key sections of the book do offer advice germane to anyone wanting to sell on the web. One topic is whether you should join various organisations that will certify your website as reputable. Truste, BBBonline, VeriSign, GeoTrust and others are mentioned. These let you put a seal (a clickable image) on your webpages. So that if a reader clicks on it, it will go to that organisation's server and popup a page attesting that your website is an accredited member. The book's coverage of the top companies offering such certifications is good. Another topic well covered is how to provide search results from searches done within your database of products. Here, osCommerce naturally comes with an internal search option.
Search Engine Optimisation is another topic extensively discussed. This is where you try to get your webpages listed as prominently as possible in the (free) results of major search engines. Tips are given, including how to avoid getting blacklisted by the search engines for being an SEO spammer. (Naughty, naughty!)
Unfortunately, a failing of the book is a poorly done index. For example, on the subject of certificates, SSL, seals or any of those certifying organisations, there simply are no entries in the index. Another example is the omission of link farms or spam from the index, even though these are discussed in the text.

Drupal E-commerce with Ubercart 2.x Review

Drupal E-commerce with Ubercart 2.x
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first glance at the title of this book, you might be tempted to think that it is not too much more than a reference guide to the complex Ubercart module. Surprisingly, you're only half right. While the authors, George Papadongonas and Yiannis Doxaras, do a great job of covering almost all aspects of the modules that ship with Ubercart, they also go way beyond that. It turns out this book is actually a pretty good guide for not only configuring your Drupal-powered ecommerce site, but also quite valuable in the planning, promoting, and tracking phases as well.
As you'd expect, the authors do a nice job covering the many modules that need to be enabled and configured for a basic Ubercart site. In many cases they go screen-by-screen in the configuration - something that isn't easy to make very engaging. They cover Ubercart's conditional actions functionality quite nicely and how it can be used to configure tax and shopping modules. They also cover product classes and product kits - two very powerful features of Ubercart that every site admin should leverage.
Where the book really shines though is in the descriptions of all the various topics (mainly other modules) in the Ubercart universe. They wisely provide information about popular supporting modules that many ecommerce sites lack, including wish lists, product recommendations, and coupon codes. It is effective use of modules like these that really make ecommerce sites useful.
Overall, this book is a nice surprise. At well over 350 pages, it is beefier than most Drupal books, and provides a wealth of practical information that most Ubercart-powered sites will benefit from.

Magento 1.4 Development Cookbook Review

I am making a point not to review the language used in the book however, it is necessary to note that the English language purist, would have a few remarks on the grammar, spelling and overall construction of sentences. The book also employs a jovial and fun writing style which may or may not please readers of technical books. Having said that, the book is still very readable and once the reader becomes used to the writing style, the ability to understand the material is not impaired.
The book is aimed at PHP developers who want to boost their Magento skills. It claims that basic PHP knowledge is necessary but no prior Magento experience. Knowing that Magento is a very complex piece of software, this statement was somewhat surprising to me and indicated a promise that, I'd say, is not so easy to keep.
The material covered in the book stretches over a wide variety of topics oriented towards but not exclusively limited to developing with Magento. In the first chapter we learn how to set up a development environment using svn, a LAMPP (XAMPP) stack and Netbeans for the development IDE. Then we get an overview of working with some Magento design and CMS features such as customizing the error page and adding an RSS feed to your site. Chapter 3 goes into adding extra functionality to your Magento site by integrating WordPress, adding a Lightbox and jQuery (!). Covered next are topics on customizing a store, addressing working with the product catalog and adding a professional touch to your site. Then we get a quick glance at working with the Magento database directly. Chapter 8 is solely devoted to creating a Magento module (or extensions) from scratch, followed by more chapters on adding functionality to Magento via modules and widgets. The final two chapters discuss the performance optimization and debugging and unit testing techniques.
As we can see, the topics are quite ambitious for the just over 250 pages.
It is important to bear in mind that this is a `recipe' book which means that due to the very nature of the format, the individual recipes are small, short and self contained pieces of functionality that, in theory, could be applied immediately to solve a certain problem. This, in turn, means that the author doesn't have the luxury of delving deeper into the topic at hand which has the effect of leaving readers wanting for more clarity and explanation in some chapters.
Personally, I would argue that the `recipe' book format may not be the most suitable for writing about complex topics such as Magento, especially if the goal is to advance one's in-depth knowledge and learn more advanced aspects of developing with Magento. While we end up with useful snippets of core or steps for performing certain tasks, we never quite get enough background information in order to fully understand why things work. Granted, the Author tries to add value under the "How it Works" parts of each recipe but, again, the format constraint doesn't allow for lengthy elaborations.
Be that as it may, let's see in more detail, what we can learn and apply by working through this book.
Content
The book is supposed to cover Magento 1.4 development, however, while reading it, I couldn't escape the feeling that parts were written with Magento 1.3.x in mind and possibly later adapted for 1.4. Magento 1.4 changed a few things from 1.3.x, notably the way that the design themes are handled but the book still uses the Magento 1.3.x paradigm of adding extension designs to the default/default theme as opposed to the base/default.
Each recipe starts with the title of the recipe, an optional "Getting ready" paragraph outlining the prerequisits for the recipe, the "How to do it..." part containing the steps, actions and code for the execution of the recipe and the "How it works" part, where the recipe is explained. Sometimes a certain topic will be covered over several recipes where subsequent recipes build upon covered material.
So let's see what each chapter has to offer.
Chapter 1
A lot of development books will start with tips on how to set up an environment for development. Here we learn how to set up our local development server with Apache, MySQL and PHP and create our local development site via an Apache virtual host entry. We then set up the subversion (svn) client and check out the latest Magento version form the Magento svn repository. The author shows us how to set up some MySQL GUI tools and create the Magento database. Subsequently, he shows us how to set up our development environment using the Netbeans IDE and finally explains the relevant directories in a default Magento installation.
The topics covered here are straightforward development procedures that are well known to practicing developers and can comfortably be skipped. One note I have is that it would have been nice to state the alternative way of installing Magento using the official download as well as an alternative to using svn. Personally, I prefer using git for all my Magento projects and don't bother with checking out Magento code via svn. The svn approach may be more relevant in the case of wanting to keep up to date with the very latest bleeding edge Magento development for research and testing purposes.
Chapter 2
In this chapter we are immediately plunged into editing some theme phtml files. Curiously, here, we can see that the author is aware of the app/design/frontend/base structure of Magento 1.4 but later in the book we have references to the older style of Magento 1.3.x. Also, we seem to be encouraged to edit the template files directly. It would have been good to first outline the procedure of setting up your own design package and theme and use that as the basis of all customizations.
Nevertheless, we learn how to add a home page link to the default navigation, alter the document title, customize the 404 page, add adwords tracking to the order confirmation page, add a custom CMS layout template, add an RSS feed displaying the last 5 tweets from a Twitter account. We also learn how to place the built in contact form into a CMS page and integrate the Flash based JW Image Rotator on the home page.
Logically, some of the recipes are already in the territory of modules but those are covered much later in the book. At this point, we have to accept this and trust the author. No doubt that some of the recipes here will be useful to beginners starting out with Magento, but there is little new ground covered for someone who has already worked with Magento.
Chapter 3
This chapter promises more excitement starting with a recipe on how to integrate WordPress into Magento. After that we see how to add a new CMS page in the Magento admin, add jQuery support and a 3D rotating tag cloud and integrate the Lightbox 2 in our product pages. Finally, we edit the site footer template and insert a block of accepted payment method images.
Once again, practical recipes achieving several useful goals, but...
For me, the WordPress recipe is too simplistic. It simply shows how to install WordPress and theme it so it matches your Magento theme and that's it. There are several other methods of integrating WordPress but none have been mentioned.
I also have a problem with the jQuery recipe. As the author himself says, Magento already comes with the Prototype and Scriptaculous JS frameworks so why add more weight to the site by installing jQuery? Understandably, jQuery has more fantastic plugins and performs better but ultimately I would avoid adding a whole new JS library to a Magento store if page load and rendering performance is important. A warning or note around that would have been sufficient.
Chapter 4
This chapter is titled "Customizing a Store". It is a mix of admin user guide showing us how to use the built in Google Optimizer features, create custom variables for use in email templates, enable Google Analytics and create catalog and shopping cart price rules for your promotional activity. The other recipes will teach how to delete orders, create a featured product and a custom admin theme.
Mostly novice material but it was useful to see how to quickly create featured products and a custom admin theme if you want to alter the admin branding for your clients. I had an issue with the deleting orders recipe (by installing a free extension from Magento connect) as this functionality is omitted from Magento on purpose but it was referring to deleting orders performed while testing the store under development. I would not recommend leaving this extension accessible to a store owner when the store goes live.
Chapter 5
is called `Playing with Products' and, again for the most part, is a guide to the Magento admin back end surrounding the catalog and products. We are shown how to set up the catalog configuration, load shipping rates for the Table Rate shipping method, create a configurable product and insert a YouTube video in the product description field. The other recipes cover adding a Facebook `Like' button on the product page and adding a product to the cart via using a URL query string.
This chapter feels like it's definitely targeted towards the Magento novice and there is not much to learn if you already have some Magento experience under your belt.
Chapter 6
Entitled "Adding a Professional Touch to your Site" I can't see what that has to do with installing Magento on PHP 5.3.2 where mcrypt is not available. Also, the other recipes just tell us how to set up some admin configuration values in order to optimize the store for SEO and enable PayPal. All these are user manual material.
Chapter 7...Read more›

Ultimate Guide to Google Ad Words, 2nd Edition: How To Access 100 Million People in 10 Minutes

At the beginning of Chapter 28 (17 Things Yo' Momma Never Told You About Google), the authors talk about the concept of 10,000 hours of work necessary to master any subject/field. Perry makes the observation that it would be very difficult to spend 10,000 hours studying Google Adwords - there is simply not that much you can study about Google Adwords. But there is a ton of things that you can study that comes before and after the click.
In my opinion, this book does an excellent job of talking about the things that come before and after the click.
The book covers all the information you need to know to run a successful Google Adwords campaign. But there are lots of other things you need to know to run a successful business - the things that come before and after the click. Chapter 12 goes into great detail about developing your USP (unique selling proposition). The first sentence of chapter 12 is. "This could be the most important chapter in the book." You must be able to answer the question, "Why should anyone do business with you? Why should anyone buy your product? What is your unique guarantee?" Unfortunately most people run "me too businesses". Follow the advice in chapter 12, develop your own unique business.
The book also gives a good introduction to copywriting, including some good advice from one of the best in the business - John Carlton. Anyone trying to sell in print (either online or offline) must learn the concepts and principles as put forth in the chapter on copywriting.
While the authors state that chapter 12 might be the most important chapter in the book, I believe that chapter 23 is of equal value. Here the authors talk about "grinding down the competition." The concept is that success is not a flash in the pan, brilliant idea. Success is more often the result of dogged determination, plodding incremental improvements and simply sticking with the basics long after others have given up.
The authors constantly remind the reader that split testing is the keys to riches. You can never know/guess what the market wants or is willing to spend money on. You must be willing to listen to the market. Don't try to impose your ideas/will on the market.
It is very easy for business owners to think that they know what will work, what people want and which ads "look" good. But as the authors point out time and time again, you cannot guess with any degree of accuracy about what will work . You must test, test and test some more. I think the most difficult thing for the reader to accept is that to be successful you must give up your pre-conceived notions of what you think/know will work be open to learning from the markets.
There are plenty of words of wisdom from Claude Hopkins (author of the classic - Scientific Advertising - written in 1923) scattered throughout the book. They are in the form of tidbits "Uncle Claude Sez".
There are some exceptionally good supplemental bonuses that you can download from a link provided in the book. For new Google users you can get a $25 credit to start your account.
There are plenty of references throughout the book to additional sources. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in marketing on the Internet sign up for Perry Marshall's free information. Yes he will make offers to sell you additional programs but you are free to decide if they make sense for you. You will get a great marketing education from the very valuable free information he gives away.
I highly recommend this book. It contains a wealth of information about how to run a successful business. It does not/will not give you quick/easy way to guaranteed profits. Ultimately, the authors tell it straight. It takes doing an awful lot of work, seeking continuous incremental improvements to get ahead in today's highly competitive world. If you are looking for a great guide that is truthful, then this is a great resource.
