This book was sent to me for free from a textbook company that I use. It is a very current primer on social media, why it is important and how it can change your business/organization. I have a feeling it will be dated in another year or so but right now it is a terrific book to read to build your social media knowledge base and understand how all types of organizations are leveraging social media. There are a bunch of case studies in the middle of the book that are interesting, especially the one on how the Red Cross used social media to raise money for the Haiti earthquake relief. I recommend it, especially if you are someone without a strong base knowledge of the topic.

The New Language of Marketing 2.0: How to Use ANGELS to Energize Your Market

I bought three books on web 2.0 and social marketing. This was the worst of the three.
First it repeats things over and over, as in the book is 400 plus pages and it could easily have covered what she had s original in about 100 pages, many chapters started of with or stated basically the same thought in different words.
The up side is if you are part of a large corporation it can offer some good insights.
The downside if you are a small company or individual marketer, it's not going to help all that much. Yes some of the big corporation case studies can be transferred to a small company but again between the repetitious nature of the book, cute little acronyms it tries to put forth and lack of scalability the books overall isn't useful.
I was and am very surprised so many people in these reviews feels she *gets it* or that the book is filled with great information. For me it usn't at all enlightening except for a few points. Most of it was information that other books cover in much better detail and with much better understanding.

YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts Review

YouTube: An Insider's Guide to Climbing the Charts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a thorough introduction to creating videos for YouTube, aimed at the absolute beginner. It is especially strong on explaining how to tell a story and on how to behave yourself as part of the YouTube community. The emphasis is on making art, not on making money.
It is not a techie book. There's a long chapter called "99-Cent Film School" that covers the mechanics of creating a video, but it's very basic and deals mostly with the selection of equipment, with some discussion of editing. The book is unusual in that it is not Macintosh-centric: the authors use Windows and claim there's no need to consider Macintosh because Windows is cheaper and has more software.
The authors summarize their position on p. 248 as "Don't watch the media, be the media." This is a good sound bite and gives the flavor of the book, although it is not really accurate since they encourage watching and commenting on the videos of other YouTubers. (Besides, if no one watched the media, would there be any media left?) The authors detest traditional media, especially television, and they detest much of the new media too. This doesn't have much impact on the book, except to cause occasional outbursts of gratuitous nastiness. For example, on p. 244 we read, "Social networking provides websites to people who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer." Although there's some truth in this, it is unnecessary to state it here. The isolation from other media also gives the impression that YouTube is its own universe, with no connection to anything else.
The nastiness comes out in concentrated form in the Preface, which attempts to explain "Why You Should Buy This Book" by trashing the competition. Be sure to skip this section of the book! It's not representative of the rest and reading it will turn you off from an otherwise-good book.
There are a number of rough spots that could have been improved by better copy-editing. The book is somewhat rambling. Although it does explain all the YouTube and computer jargon, it may use a term many times before defining it. For example, the term "partner" is used throughout the book but is not explained until Chapter 11. The index is often no help; "partner" is not in the index as such (you have to look under YouTube Partners), and acronyms such as RSS and NLE are not indexed at all.
YouTube URLs are cryptic pseudo-random character strings, and a Very Good Feature of the book is that the authors have placed every URL as a hyperlink on one page on their web site, so you just have to click it. This is not quite as good as feature as it could be, because the cryptic URLs on that page are not annotated other than with a cross-reference number such as "URL 9.3"; if each had a short description or title the page would be easier to navigate and would also be great for browsing.

Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day Review

Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day

I loved this book. Over the past year or so I have read quite a number of tomes regarding social media and social media marketing, but none until this one have been written in a planner or workbook format. This one is well written, well organized, and full of content. It has 14 chapters split into the following four parts or sections:
I. The Foundation of Social Media
II. Month 1: Prepare for Social Marketing
III. Month 2: Social Media Channels
IV. Month 3: Complete Your Plan
Two books similar to this one on how to put together a business plan are: "16 Weeks to Your Dream Business" (ISBN: 9780071588362, and "Self Employment: From Dream to Reality" (ISBN: 1563709228). And a book similar to this one on how to put together a fundraising plan is: "The Fundraising Planner" (ISBN: 0787944351). The instant book being reviewed touches on the marketing issues of social media, and then devises a systematic approach to putting together a social media marketing plan customized to your small business.
Each of the 14 chapters ended with a summary section. I found it very easy to cruise through this book by first reading the summary sections and then tackling the rest of the book after having a pretty good idea of what was being covered.
After reading this book you will have devised a social media marketing plan that addresses (1) platform, (2) content, and (3) interaction. You will have decided whether to use Technorati, MySpace, Socialvibe, Flickr, Facebook, Friendster, Linkedin, and/or YouTube. Technorati is the tunnel through which to learn more about the blog or blogs you will create.
So if you want to tap into the power of the Social Web through connected networks and consumer-oriented media, then I recommend this book as one of the tomes you seek out and read in order to build your company's social media marketing plan. 5 stars!

Viral Loop: From Facebook to Twitter, How Today's Smartest Businesses Grow Themselves Review

Viral Loop: From Facebook to Twitter, How Today's Smartest Businesses Grow Themselves
Average Reviews:

Penenberg deftly explores the viral growth of businesses through a few historical stages. Tupperware is a good early example, but the book really takes off when he delves into the dawn of the web, a period the author has a tremendous grasp on. He knows this history and the people who shaped it as well as anyone, and brings to it a shrewd analysis that carries through to the more current examples. Unlike too many other books in the category, it is extremely well-reported.
For someone who grew up alongside the Internet, reading the book gave me a richer understanding of the developments that brought us to the current stage. It's impossible not to notice that without a Web there is no Mosaic there is no Netscape there is no IE there is no Google there is no Myspace, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, there is no whatever's next. Every one of those businesses grew in a strikingly similar way. Which means that the next ones will as well; a powerful lesson for anyone working in the digital space.
Viral Loop is a rare business/tech book that looks back lucidly at the past, is astonishingly relevant to what is happening TODAY, and won't seem the least bit dated in the coming years--if anything, I bet it'll seem prescient.

Building Web 2.0 Business Websites: Business Process Innovation with Web 2.0 and Joomla Review

Building Web 2.0 Business Websites: Business Process Innovation with Web 2.0 and Joomla
Average Reviews:

I will not set here and say I am a Joomla master by any means. I will tell you I have a dozen or so books on the subject and this book is not only poorly written, but the author has no real understanding of Joomla.
With the size of the font, you would think it was written for a 5 year old. It is obvious it was written to just take up space and make it look like a bigger book than its content is worth.
One third of the book just shows html code that is incomplete and left me wondering why the author thought it would work in Joomla or a browser for that matter?
He rambles on and on in the topics with no direction, constantly repeating his words and in the end left me with more questions than answers. There is very little relevance to show this writer even has an understanding of Web 2.0 let alone the ability to write about it.
If you don't believe me just go to his web site [...]. What you see is exactly what he calls a Web 2.0 web site, because the shady examples in the book are this web site. The book tells me to go to the site and I can download the code used in the book. As of this comment there is no link anywhere on the site.
Folks there are a ton of great books on Amazon to help you build with Joomla, this is without a doubt the most useless book I have ever read. It took my two and a half hours to go from cover to cover. I learned absolutely nothing! Jackley Cesar Shame on you for this worthless book! It may be worth 2 dollars not a penny more! If there was a negative position on the star rating you would still rank below that! Sadly enough I have to give you at least one star just to be able to warn people of the mistake they are about to make!

YouTube for Business: Online Video Marketing for Any Business

I loved this book. It is well outlined and well written. And it is very topical in today's business marketing world where small businesses can use YouTube to enhance their online marketing efforts significantly. The book has 16 chapters divided into the following five parts:
I. Marketing your business online with YouTube (1-3)
II. Producing Your YouTube Videos (4-8)
III. Managing Your YouTube Videos (9-11)
IV. Working with YouTube Video Blogs (12-13)
V. Promotion and Monetization (14-16)
And each Part is concluded with a "Profile" which applied what had been discussed in the chapters preceding it. I found these profiles very helpful and informative. Not too long ago I read and reviewed "Show Me: Marketing with Video on the Internet" (ISBN: 1884230016). I had high hopes for that book and wanted it to be like the instant book being reviewed. Unfortunately it fell short of my expectations. However, after reading "YouTube for Business" this other book might be a good companion read?
Internet marketing today seems to be about putting together successful ways to generate traffic to your company or nonprofit Web site. You can do this by performing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. You can do this by creating lots of content pages in your Web site. You can do this by writing articles and posting them on free article-posting sites online. Each article will have a by-line directing traffic back to your site. You can generate traffic by creating one (or more than one) blog which will direct traffic back to your site. And after reading this book you can generate traffic by creating simple videos you post on YouTube that will direct viewers back to your Web site.
The really neat thing about YouTube traffic generation is that it not only generates traffic, but it allows you to get your face and voice in front of people as though you were standing there talking with them. You can become three-dimensional rather than just two.
My favorite part of the book was Part II where the author goes into some depth into how to produce videos for posting on YouTube. And it is these same videos you will want to paste into your main Web site and your blog posts. I highly recommend this book for just about any small business owner who wants to make a name for themselves better and quicker. 5 stars!
PS. Take a look at the Search Inside material offered by Amazon so you can examine the Table of Contents of this book and more fully understand what this book has to offer.
