Digital Photography Digital Field Guide Review

Digital Photography Digital Field Guide
Average Reviews:

Former professional photographer Harold Davis has written a top notch book that peels back all the complexities of digital photography and puts world class photo tips in layman's terms.
You're probably reading this review because you're considering buying this book and you want a bit of insight into its value.
Well, if that's the case, here's why you should:
1) The explanations and directions on how best to use ISO, aperture, and shutter control are written in very simple straightforward text that is so much easier to understand than those complicated instruction manuals that come with so many cameras. Hey, you've probably spent several hundred dollars on a nice camera....and here's a guide that tell you actually how to use that same camera to take better shots.
2) There are a series of practice lessons that guide you through the best vantage points, the best focal points, even the best time to take photos - whether landscape, portraits or floral shots. Mr. Davis not only helps you set up a shot with this guide, but he'll tell you what the best exposure would be for the shot itself. Now that's helpful when you're out in the field trying to figure out how to capture nature better than through a simple snapshot.
3) Mr. Davis also covers what I would call targeting learning. He takes a subject (sunsets or water for example) and tells the reader the best settings that will produce the best outcome. He also talks about variations on themes, and I found those chapters to be compelling reading.
4) Finally, this volume has a whole section on editing and improving photos after the shot. Again, it is in an easy to read - and easy to use - format that explains the concepts and usage without complicating things.
In essence, this book is about two things. Speed of use and speed of improvement. If you want to know how to use your camera to take better photos....and you want to know how to do it without reading dozens of pages about arcane photographic terms, then this is the book for you.
This book is one you'll use over and over in your photographic journey.
Highly recommended.

Information Technology for Management: Improving Performance in the Digital Economy Review

Information Technology for Management: Improving Performance in the Digital Economy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In short, this book does not teach about management. It hardly teaches anything useful about I.T. and it is not a quality resource for a graduate-level class.
Yes, the content, is all from very current sources. It was very impressive to see this textbook handled in a Fall '09 class when its published date is 2010. However, all that goes aside when reading the book's content. It takes very high-level definitions of commonly-known applications and somehow makes a subject matter out of them. For example, one of the questions in chapter 7 asks to "define the Wi-Fi revolution." I doubt that this buzzwordy term, along with the thousands of other buzzwords that comprise the bulk of subject matter in this book, was important for me to know in a management role. Throughout the book, they drop all kinds of odd abbreviations. In chapter 5, they refer to "EC", which is not defined anywhere in that or any of the previous chapters, and isn't clearly described until chapter 6, which is all about "E-commerce". Lots of e-this and e-that terms are peppered across the boldly-colored pages.
Every other page has something that could be considered a "sidebar" - a large sub-article that is relative to the content of that section - that ends up consuming the entire page. This breaks up the continuity of the book when trying to read through. I will go through a plain white page with black text, see the paragraph wrap in mid-sentence, turn the page expecting to see the rest of the paragraph, and then the page is blue with a whole separate article in a different font. I understand that textbooks do this from time-to-time to add in knowledge relevant to the content, but this happens with the turn of *every* page. The sidebars themselves are discontinuous, all exploding in different shades of pink, blue, or green.
Many of the graphics drawn in the book make no sense. The section on Data Visualisation tells us that graphics are supposed to convey knowledge as drawn from a data source so the information can be understood easily (e.g., a graph). The artists of this book must not have read that chapter.
I'm halfway through the book now and am about to take my midterm this Sunday. Having read half a textbook on IT Management, I haven't read one bit about PMP certification, which is a global standard for project managers. I'm disappointed and will certainly inform my school of this, but I wanted to inform any potential institutions that this textbook is full of fluff and needn't be used.

Eileen completely rounds out and defines the personal and virutal world of socializing for business in the era of social media marketing. I had a hard time putting down this book unless it was to jot down some notes and action items. Worth the read, more than once.

Data Driven: Profiting from Your Most Important Business Asset Review

Data Driven: Profiting from Your Most Important Business Asset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In contrast to several recent books on the importance of managing with data analytics, Data Driven starts with the IT infrastructure required to maintain consistent data, then focuses on data quality from the executive perspective of the hidden costs of poor data, and finally, explores how to make better decisions through proper data management.
A nice twist is a chapter on content providers who bring packaged data to the marketplace. This is a growing segment that is applicable to every business, since every business collects data that has value to companies in its ecosystem.
There is a chapter on Social Issues, which is great in intent but weak in content. Sad...
The book ends with "what to do over the next one hundred days" advice. If managers are serious about treating data as a business asset, then this chapter lays out the essentials of what to do.
I recommend this book for business executives to orient their thinking about data as a business asset and to realize what tangible actions must be done to make that a reality in their companies. I know that these are old old themes for the IT profession. However, these fundamental themes are oldies but goodies!

Ethics in Information Technology Review

Ethics in Information Technology
Average Reviews:

This text is highly reductionist. From the beginning his only concern is argue for protecting from monitary loss (he describes unethical behavior based on how much money you loose). In summary this is a book designed to develop a background for understanding why we have corporate security on IT/IS systems. The book really should be titled "MIS and Corporate Security the Current Social Backdrop".
There is nothing real for the student to grab ahold of from an ethical stand point. Use this as source book for indentifying the current trends but don't expect it to cause your students to think.

Security 2020: Reduce Security Risks This Decade Review

Security 2020: Reduce Security Risks This Decade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Disclaimer: I worked for Doug for a few years, and I know a number of the other contributing authors.
I liked this book, and I think it is a useful review of where InfoSec is coming from and a useful guide to how things are likely to go in the next years.
It strikes a good balance between technical details and executive management readability, which is good for a couple of reasons.
First, it will be useful to a wider audience, and broader awareness of these issues is a good thing.
Second, given that broad appeal, it can provide some common ground for the tactical folks in the trenches (like me), and the strategic folks in management. Making sure everyone is aware of the risks and getting everyone on the same page isn't always easy, and Security 2020 can help bridge the gap.
This is not "InfoSec 101" nor is it intended to be, though the writing is approachable enough that anyone will get something out of it. But for anyone in InfoSec directly, in a related role such as systems or network administration, or considering such a role, there's a lot of good stuff here. (Some might argue that systems or network administration are InfoSec roles, and I agree but depending on how your organization is structured you can end up with separate "silos"... Regardless--being on the same page is a Good Thing.)
If you've been around a while, the early chapters will be a good review, otherwise they'll help explain how we got where we are. Then it jumps to a blend of current threats and issues, where we're likely to go, and how we'll get there. My favorite section was the various scenarios in chapter 9, though the conclusions in chapter 10 are very interesting too.
Bottom line: if you have any role or interest in Information Security at all, this is good food for thought.

iPad in the Enterprise: Developing and Deploying Business Applications Review

iPad in the Enterprise: Developing and Deploying Business Applications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Given the inroads that the iPad is making in the Enterprise, the book is very timely and the content serves as a good commentary on many aspects related to the adoption of the iPad for Enterprise use.
-The book is organized into five parts: Strategy, Architecture, Design, Development and Deployment. This organization works very well to cover the content of this book.
-iPad in the Enterprise is written with a broad set of enterprise readers in mind - IT and non IT executives, architects as well as developers. Different parts are focused on different types of readers and as such each part is fully contained and can be read on its own.
-The enterprise focus is maintained well throughout the book, except for a couple of areas where the treatment of the content does not quite do justice to the enterprise focus.
I provide a detailed book review here on my blog on PROPELICS
