(More customer reviews)OK. Here is the problem. The internet is still rapidly changing. What this means is that a book, no matter how well written, about the Internet is doomed for failure.
This book talks about search strategy, websites, tools, software, etc. The problem is by time the book is researched, written, submitted and then published the data is not only useless it is frustrating.
I ended up being exposed to this text for a Graduate class on research methods. I work in IT so the class itself wasn't bad for myself but it was sad to watch the frustration on the part of the other students part in trying to translate the text in the book to the internet of then. The issue was the reality was 3 years apart. That just doesn't work for the Internet.
A text would be fine for top level studies of the Internet. A paper text is not the best format for a true drill down on Internet usage. Periodicals, Internet Sites and Interactive Media seem the best platform for learning the technical aspects of the Internet.

The Web Library: Building a World Class Personal Library with Free Web Resources Review

(More customer reviews)Glancing at the title I thought it was just another list of websites, and although many sites are listed, most of them aren't the common knowledge everyday sites that librarians and general web surfers already know about. What makes the book quite a bit different is that the author includes quite a few interviews with people from the websites that are mentioned -- people from Project Gutenberg, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, etc. The author also uses several methods to judge site longevity (i.e., will the site be around in the future), plus there's a website he manages to keep track of changes. With Open Access becoming a trend, this book is the most credible to date.

I had quickly learned that I was becoming involved in something more than looking at a census or filling out a chart. Learning from others with more experience helped me develop my research skills and saved me from a lot of trial and error learning. As genealogy has become one of the most popular pursuits, the need for guidance has grown, too. The number of those "how-to" books has increased, but some offer more than others, especially since technology has come to play such a large role in our research. This book fills a real need.
From beginning with home resources to making use of all the technology available, George gives his readers 472 pages of first class advice and information. The book is intensely readable, and the examples are clear and to the point. Both the beginner and the advanced researcher will benefit from chapters on using the Internet, locating advanced records, and following alternate paths to find the records you need.
One of the best features of the book is the chapter "Plan A Very Successful Genealogical Research Trip". When spending the time, effort, and cash to get to a research locality, we want to be as successful as possible. Planning is the key. George gives step-by-step directions to get prepared and uses practical examples to illustrate just how to do this. I know I will be more successful on my next trip because of things I learned here.

Searching & Researching on the Internet & the World Wide Web 4th edition, by Ernest Ackermann, a computer science professor and Karen Hartman, a reference librarian, is a welcome update to the field of Internet "how-to" books. As it is updated every two years it does not fall behind in this rapidly changing field. The content and organization make it useful for independent study or as an Internet course textbook. Logically organized, it begins with chapters on basics introducing the Internet and the Web, browsers and bookmarks, before progressing to research skills and tools. Each chapter includes detailed activities designed to demonstrate the tools, services, or resources being discussed in the chapter. The authors are good about encouraging readers to adapt and to use their newly learned navigation skills should they encounter differing results from those presented.

The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See Review

(More customer reviews)I retired five years ago after thirty years in a very large public library system, and recently found it necessary to return to the trenches for awhile, in a rather smaller system. In that half-decade, of course, the Internet changed drastically and, even though I'm constantly online and intimately familiar with the major search engines (and many of the minor ones), there was a large number of new reference information sources with which I was not at all familiar. So I went looking for professional tools to remedy my ignorance. This is the first book I've seen in the publisher's "CyberAge" series, and medthodologically, it's quite good. As others have noted, the static nature of print-on-paper means rapidly outdated material, but Sherman and Price show you how to attack the problem, so, even though I came across several (unfortunately) extinct databases, I was able to locate several new ones, too. This is a terrific instructional work for reference librarians, and the accompanying web site is near the top of my bookmarks at work.

Enormous expanses of the Internet are unreachable with standard web search engines. This book provides the key to finding these hidden resources by identifying how to uncover and use invisible web resources. Mapping the invisible Web, when and how to use it, assessing the validity of the information, and the future of Web searching are topics covered in detail. Only 16 percent of Net-based information can be located using a general search engine. The other 84 percent is what is referred to as the invisible Web-made up of information stored in databases. Unlike pages on the visible Web, information in databases is generally inaccessible to the software spiders and crawlers that compile search engine indexes. As Web technology improves, more and more information is being stored in databases that feed into dynamically generated Web pages. Cengage Advantage Books: The Pocket Wadsworth Handbook Review

(More customer reviews)I've used the previous version, The Pocket Holt Handbook,
in the past and loved it because it was slim, visual,
colorful, and easy to use.
All the things I liked about the Holt are missing here.
It's thicker and more bloated. It's more expensive --
as usual for these things. And it's harder to find
things. All the color markers are gone. The brightness
is gone. It looks exactly like every dull, boring,
grammar handbook out there.
I guess I have no choice but to order it for my
students -- the alternatives are monsters that
weigh a ton and cost a fortune. However, I'll
continue to use my little Holt -- and encourage
my students to look for used copies if they can.
