Holtz and Havens put together the business book I've been hoping for. The premise of this groundbreaking business-strategy book is that companies need to be more forthcoming with information about the internal workings of their business. There are three "publics" that a business deals with, according to this book: external (the public), internal (employees) and investors.
From Enron to AIG, opacity in how executives make decisions has cost investors, employees and investors dearly, and the government is stepping up regulations to force companies to be more transparent. Holtz and Havens show that companies that have been transparent all along--with liberal employee-blog policies, social marketing policies and releasing what was once sensitive information (financials, research, opinions, and the handling of corporate mistakes and blunders)--have always fared better and retained the loyalty of their publics even in bad times.
There are concerns to being transparent. Some information is not for competitors' eyes, and some information cannot be legally exposed, especially in publicly traded companies. But the argument for releasing as much information as possible is put forth quite admirably.
By being transparent, a company becomes motivated by honesty, not greed. The employees have a better understanding if the bottom line, and investors feel more confident about the management decisions. A two-way conversation with the public means that a company is better positioned to compete.
The most important points that Holtz and Havens make are that corporate transparency is a legal, moral and competitive requirement, and that transparency among businesses is inevitable, that opacity is not only futile, but self-destructive.
I strongly recommend this book, with a rating of A+. Not only was I inspired by what Holtz and Havens wrote, I am moved to incorporate their ideas into the Flying Pen Press way of business.

While exposing the risks inherent in maintaining a nontransparent relationship with customers, Tactical Transparency provides a methodology that will help your organization create its unique plan to bring greater authenticity to your company and your brands. Drawn largely from interviews with leaders in companies that have achieved measurable success in this arena, authors Shel Holtz and John C. Havens provide step-by-step details on how executives and professional communicators can create a transparency strategy that will keep their organization competitive in the twenty-first century. The authors show how organizations can evaluate their readiness for transparency, what they need to do to get ready, and how to effectively communicate their transparency strategy to their customers and employees. They also identify aspects of blog/new media "netiquette" an important but often misunderstood part of engaging in transparency.

The AMA Handbook of Public Relations Review

The AMA Handbook of Public Relations
Average Reviews:

I loved it. Impressive. I won't say it is a "detailed" handbook to use to actually become expert at PR in the 21st century. But it is a wonderful book that covers the following:
>>New media [Web sites, blogs, & mircoblogs]
>>Old media [Newspapers, magazines, etc.]
>>Public speaking
>>Market research
>>Tactics for keeping up digitally
I'm not sure why "market research" was included. But then the book is sponsored by the AMA. I found the text to be well written and outlined. It is comprised of four parts that are broken into 19 chapters and three appendices. I urge you to examine the Search Inside feature Amazon provides for this book so you can see the 19 chapter titles.
Back in May, 2009 I read and reviewed Putting the Public Back in Public Relations: How Social Media Is Reinventing the Aging Business of PR. In that review I commented that there should have been a chapter on Investor Relations. Well, the instant book has one. See Chapter 13 and the related chapter on The Annual Report (14). I like both books. And I think they compliment one another. I highly recommend any public relations professional who wants to be competent in their field and make things happen today read both as companion books. 5 stars!

Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message Review

Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the first things that struck me when I began reading Citizen Marketers, was the ability that Ben and Jackie (calling them McConnell and Huba just doesn't fit) have to take a concept as misunderstood as Social Media, and scale it down to where it is accessible to all, and to do so without talking down to the reader. In fact, the book does such a good job of giving background on the various forms of social media, that it can double as a general primer on the subject.
But where CM shines is in explaining what exactly Citizen Marketing is, who these people are, and what motivates them. I'll be honest, going into reading this book, I was a bit worried that this would simply be a collection of case studies providing examples of citizen marketing, bookended with an introduction and conclusion chapter. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Ben and Jackie have done exhaustive research into the subject of citizen marketing, and instead of simply rehashing examples such as the CGM buzz behind Snakes on a Plane, Jarvis' Dell Hell, or the liberation of Fiona Apple (quite possibly my favorite story in the book, which I'd never heard of previously), Ben and Jackie talked to all the parties involved, and discovered what they did, why they did it, and who they did it for.
Their conclusion was that they were dealing with, concerned citizens. Citizens whose love of their favorite brand compelled them to take action on its behalf. And thanks to the rise of the internet, and more specifically social media, those concerned citizens not only have the tools necessary to produce their own brand marketing, they have the ability to reach others, and mobilize them to share their cause. One person's blog post lamenting the cancellation of a favorite TV show can blossom into a full-fledged petition drive that saves the series. A bad customer service experience at a fast food restaurant can be recorded and uploaded to YouTube within minutes. Jarvis' post about his dissatisfaction over his Dell erupted into Dell Hell, which eventually forced the Austin-based computer maker to totally re-examine their customer-service, and revamp their policy on reading and responding to bloggers(IOW, creating a policy for reading and responding to bloggers).
But in my opinion, the heart of the book lies in Ben and Jackie's breakdown of Citizen Marketers into four distinct categories, which they have dubbed 'The Four Fs', all with their own motivations for their actions:
1. Filters
The Filters collect all manner of stories, blog posts, podcasts, etc. related to a specific topic, and present them in one place. These filters serve mainly as an aggregator for content in all forms related to a particular topic, but also add their own analysis and commentary on occasion.
2. Fanatics
The Fanatics are very similar to evangelists. They love(obsess?) over their favorite brand/product/person/company, and are committed to informing others about this topic. They are in the truest sense of the term 'Customer Evangelist'. But they also have great love for the brand/company/person, and aren't afraid to criticize any action that they feel is detrimental to its progress.
3. Facilitators
Facilitators are community creators/builders. They bring like-minded individuals together around a central framework, usually an only forum or blog. Ben and Jackie liken them to 'online mayors'.
4. Firecrackers
Firecrackers are the one-hit wonders of citizen marketers. They may create a hit sensation viral video, or a blogging meme, and then never be heard from again. As with their namesake, they burn very brightly and quickly, and burn out just as rapidly.
In conclusion, buy this book. It isn't a marketing book, it's a book about your community of customers. What motivates them, and what inspires them to take action, both on behalf of, and against your brand. A customer is shaken from their apathy toward a brand, and spurned to action either in response to a brand's indifference towards them, or as a result of the brand's reaching out and offering the hand of empowerment to them. Right now your brand likely sits on one side of this fence, and gaining a better understanding of your customers and what gives them the incentive to act, will help you understand how they view you.

""A solid... insightful explanation of how the Internet has armed the consumer—which is to say, everyone—against the mindless blather of corporate messaging attempts. Drop everything and read this book.""—The Wall Street JournalThe woman next to you in the coffee shop, typing madly on her laptop, just might be determining the ending to next year's block-buster film or how quickly the hottest new PDAT hits store shelves. In homes, dorm rooms, waiting rooms, planes and trains around the world, millions of people are exercising enormous influence on what we buy, even though they have no official connection to those products and services. Who are they? What motivates them? Marketing experts Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba explore the ramifications of social media in Citizen Marketers. As everyday people increasingly create content on behalf of companies, brands or products, they are collaborating with others just like themselves and forming ever-growing communities of enhusiasts and evangelists. Fromthe rough to the sophisticated, the ""user-generated media"" of blogs, online bulletin boards, podcasts, photos, songs, and animations are influencing companies' customer relationships, product design, and marketing campaigns, whether they participate willingly or not. Citizen Marketers is the first book to document this phenomenon, examining some of the early winners and losers in this new genre, as well as some of its most noted constituents. With their exceptional knowledge of brands, products, companies and industries, the citizen marketers are democratizing traditional notions of communication and marketing, even entire business models.Features:
Research on social media
Case studies of people and organizations fueling the growth of citizen marketing
Clarifies the context and importance of technological and societal shifts that are changing the nature of customer expectations and relationships

I advise the student-led debate club at our community college. Though I believe the guide was written primarily for high school debate coaches, I bought copies for the officers of our debate club after first reading it myself. The guide is straight-forward and has a lot of clear explanations and examples that can be applied immediately. Though I have to buy copies of this guide out of my own pocket since we don't have a budget for them in my department, I will be purchasing them again this year for my students - I think it is a good investment.

The bible for debaters and their coaches. Nearly every high school and college in America has a debate club and/or a debate team. There are hundreds of competitions at the county and state level, culminating in heated national competitions. Yet, at many high schools and colleges, coaches are drawn from the history or English departments with little or no experience in the highly structured procedures of this popular discipline. And while competitive debate has been growing each year as a prime academic activity, there have been no popular handbooks to help students and coaches prepare for contests effectively and efficiently. Practical and authoritative, this guide includes not only tips and guidelines for effective preparation and delivery, but full-length, actual transcripts of successful competitions in each format. Endorsed by the two national governing bodies for competitive debate—the National Federation of State High School Associations and the National Forensic League—and priced for the budget-conscious student and high school teacher alike, Competitive Debate: The Official Guide is set to become the instructional "bible" for tens of thousands of present and future debaters and their coaches. Inside, Dr. Richard Edwards—award winning debate coach, professor, former competitive debate judge, and author—leads readers through the three popular formats of competitive debate: • Policy Debate • Lincoln-Douglas Debate • Public Forum Debate

I had downloaded "The Wealthy Freelancer" to my Kindle for a plane trip to and from Austin, TX. I thought just to pass the time. Boy, did I ever pass the time quickly. These guys have written an amazingly compelling page turner that will resonate with new freelancers just having made the leap as well as old hands who think they have seen and heard it all. I am always skeptical about books like this, thinking it's just so much cheer leading. This is anything but that. From the opening chapter it is crystal clear that these guys have the street cred to talk the talk. I was disturbing my seat mate on the flight by periodically saying aloud, "I've done that" or "I've thought that" or "Damn Right!" This is a book that I will keep as a reference manual and a booster shot for those times when I need reminding why I escaped from my office cubicle. In summation I would say you can read "The Wealthy Freelancer" now or waste several years of your life, read it later and say, "Why didn't I think of that."

Kivi understands that marketing a nonprofit is a whole different animal. Anyone in charge of marketing/promotions for a nonprofit understands the budget constraints and organizational push-back that comes with the territory. Kivi writes this book with all those obstacles in mind. Not only does this book help people new to the concepts of marketing, but also to those who are familiar with them but now need to apply them to the nonprofit world.
The book is not only helpful to those who are in charge of external communications but anyone involved in representing the organization. This book would be a great addition to the library of any development team or nonprofit leader. The clear explanations and practical applications really made me feel confident in my new found responsibilities at work. I worried that the content of this book might be just a rehashing of nonprofit-marketing content from Kivi's blog or other sites but was very happy to find a wealth of new practical information organized in a very clear way.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking out ways to get new people interested in getting involved with your nonprofit.

Networking is a great book when it comes to networking. I must admit I consider myself quite up-to-date on the subject, and did not think I would need another book on the topic. And I was wrong!
Carrera explains and demonstrates a wide span of networking tools, techniques and methods - from person-to-person (in real life), via how to make the most of business card scanners, to how to successfully use social media. I picked up several new things that I am successfully applying.
The book is written in a clear and structured manner, making it easy to read and follow.

All the Rave: The Rise and Fall of Shawn Fanning's Napster Review

All the Rave: The Rise and Fall of Shawn Fanning's Napster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying that I'm very curious about the anonymous Bay Area reviews that say the book is wildly inaccurate. I'm writing a dissertation chapter on Napster (not the company, more the system), and although I didn't comparing every date and name, it seemed accurate. There are also two completely contradictory reviews by people who supposedly worked at Napster, but who knows if they did.
I feel this book is better than two other Napster books, "Sonic Boom" and "Irresistible Forces". Menn seems to have done a really good investigative job - he is a reporter after all - and includes people, perspectives, and histories that the other books don't mention at all. For instance, it turns out I've met someone who is mentioned in Menn's book but isn't in the other books. Menn interviews people who didn't invest in Napster, not just those who did. In other Napster stories, John Fanning is a father figure, and it ends there. Menn actually researches John Fanning's history, and it is ugly, complete with lawsuits and a police record. Other sources annoying tease us with hints of who Shawn Fanning's father is, and say he is a famous Boston-area musician. Menn tells us who he is - I'm from Boston, and I have never heard of the guy (Joe Rando).
Having read books, business press, law reviews, computer press, mainstream press, and other sources about Napster, I do think Menn does a very good job. Since I was not involved in Napster, I cannot say which versions, which stories, are true. Menn's work, however, gives a much richer picture of the company and the dealings within and around it than other sources I have read.

Access Controlled: The Shaping of Power, Rights, and Rule in Cyberspace (Information Revolution and Global Politics) Review

Access Controlled: The Shaping of Power, Rights, and Rule in Cyberspace (Information Revolution and Global Politics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Smartly organized and edited, Access Controlled is essential reading for anyone interested in studying the methods governments are using globally to stifle online expression and dissent. There is simply no other resource out there like this; it should be required reading in every cyberlaw or information policy program.
The book, which is a project of the OpenNet Initiative (ONI), is divided into two parts. Part 1 of the book includes six chapters on "Theory and Analysis." They are terrifically informative essays. The beefy second part of the book provides a whopping 480 pages(!) of detailed regional and country-by-country overviews of the global state of online speech controls and discuss the long-term ramifications of increasing government meddling with online networks.
The book offers a useful taxonomy to illustrate the three general types of speech and information controls that states are deploying today. Throughout the book, various authors document the increasing movement away from "first generation controls," which are epitomized by "Great Firewall of China"-like filtering methods, and toward second- and third-generation controls, which are more refined and difficult to monitor.
The individual authors seem to adopt a somewhat gloomy outlook toward the long-term prospects for "technologies of freedom" relative to "technologies of control." But I think it's vital to put things in some historical context in this regard. It's important to recall that, as a communications medium, the Net is still quite young. So, is the Net really more susceptible to State control and manipulation than previous communications technologies and platforms? I'm not so sure, although it's hard to find a metric to compare them in an analytically rigorous fashion. It's certainly true that the State has access to more data about its citizens than in the past, but it's also true that we have more information about the State than ever before, too! And, again, we also have access to more of those technologies of freedom than ever before to at least try to fight back. Compare, for example, the plight of a dissident in a Cold War-era Eastern Bloc communist state to a dissident in China or Iran today. Which one had a better chance of getting their words (or audio and video) out to the local or global community?
Despite those small quibbles, Access Controlled is an indispensable resource that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who covers information technology policy and wants to better understand global Internet regualtion. Highly recommended. [You can find my complete review at the Technology Liberation Front Blog]

Social Pollination: Escape the Hype of Social Media and Join the Companies Winning At It Review

Social Pollination: Escape the Hype of Social Media and Join the Companies Winning At It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you own a small business (or large one, for that matter) you've heard the buzz about social media. You've been told and told again you NEED to get on it, but you have no idea where to start. Monica Obrien's social pollination is where every business should start. It should be on the desk of every business owner looking to dive into social media, or thinking about hiring someone to do it for them. The book comes armed with relevant case studies, insight from leading experts, and most importantly, step by step guides for beginners (and experts). After reading the book, the reader will answer four important questions:
1) What is social media and how can it be leveraged as a business tool?
2) Is social media right for me? What business objectives can it help MY business achieve?
3) What are the specifics tactics and steps I need to take to accomplish those objectives in a cost-effective, timely manner?
4) How can I track and measure my progress and ROI.
There are many social media books that do a phenomenal job explaining how social media is changing the business world. However most of them stop there, and the reader is left thinking "ok, well, now what?" Monica picks up where those books leave off, by providing actionable tactics and tips business owners can implement immediately after reading.
The book does not tout social media as a cure all solution, like many experts and books seem to do. Instead she encourages readers to think of social media as a business TOOL. The author helps the reader understand the types of goals and objectives they might hope to accomplish, before deciding if social media is worth it for them.
From there, she provides a thorough overview of best practices and specific strategies. It a comprehensive guide book that a marketing team can use to get started right away. At the very least, it can be used to combat any outside social media hires who are charging without adding any real value.
All in all, this is a must read for business owners, marketing professionals, or students looking to understand the next monumental shift in marketing/advertising.
