A CEO business book which doesn't follow the tired Gilda Radner formula of `Enough of me talking about me...let's hear what others think about me!'. This is a fun to read book chock-full of no-holds-barred advice on everything a growth company faces. In short easy to read chapters, Benioff writes instructively about everything from fostering an innovative product development and marketing machine, to driving explosive sales in existent and new/emerging markets, to focusing on customers while simultaneously inspiring a culture of employee hyper-success. His chapters on giving back to the community should be standard reading at all business schools today. In short, this is a practical guide on how to grow a successful business without selling your soul to Mephistopheles. The enthusiasm infused in the writing is contagious. For those looking for MBA jargon, four quadrant charts, circles with arrows, new buzzwords, or formulaic bromides on business success brought about by `the cult of the leader', don't pick up this book. Benioff and Adler have penned an easy to read practical, no-nonsense step-by-step `how to' guidebook on building and running a great company. John Henry - Danville, CA

The Unemployed Millionaire: Escape the Rat Race, Fire Your Boss and Live Life on YOUR Terms

There's nothing really wrong with "The Unemployed Millionaire" per se...it's just that's there's absolutely nothing new about it either.
As a long time student of personal development, I've read and listened to almost all of the "gurus" such as Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy et alia...and this is an exact rehash of all of their stuff. (in some cases almost word for word!!)
To add insult to injury it's misleading. When I clicked on an ad for Mr Morris' book he made a big hue and cry about Goal Setting not working..."Goal Setting is for Losers - Every goal setting technique you've ever read about actually sets you up for FAILURE! Most people set goal after goal, with grand ambitions, only to fall short time and again... leaving them frustrated and ready give up. (When you read this chapter, you'll never have that problem again"
That sounded fresh...but guess what...the chapter is all about goal setting...exactly the same way it's always been done (actually not as good as some versions I've seen)...write your goal down, give it a time of completion, write it in the present tense etc...same old same old.
Trust me, if you've read any of Zig's, Brian Tracys' or the slew of other personal development books out there, you've already read this one so do yourself a favour and save your money.
PS: At least when Tony Robbins plagiarized every single personal development book under the sun he re-wrote it in his own voice so it appeared as if the ideas were his.

This book is a must have for anyone who seriously wants or is toying with the idea of Affiliate Marketing. Brown takes you through the entire process from getting started to choosing a software application right for you to how to market and promote your site. He explains the ins and outs of Affiliate Marketing on the Web in language anyone can understand, even if you're not smarter than a fifth grader.
Do you know the difference between residual and flashflood traffic techniques? How about pay per click as opposed to pay per lead? I didn't. However, after reading this book I certainly have been educated in the lingo associated with Affiliate Marketing. Brown also manages to take the guess work out of Google.
You don't have to be a web designer to apply the techniques, but if you're somewhat computer savvy it's beneficial. Brown doesn't present a get rich quick scheme, but instead delivers a sure fire way to get more traffic to your site and more money in your pocket. He doesn't lead you down the garden path and his book will definitely help you travel the road to success.

Affiliate marketing is a highly profitable online advertising method in which Web site merchants pay independent third parties to promote the products or services of an advertiser on their Web site. The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated: Expanded and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting-Edge Content.
Average Reviews:

The title and cover draws people in. 4 Hour Work Week, it's too good to be true. Then we read the first couple of pages, maybe the first couple of chapters. The first chapters are the typical motivational, "you can do it" montage. I'm not going to lie, I felt motivated to give this book a try after reading the first part of the book without even knowing what this book is all about. But as I began to get out of the fluff, and actually found myself reading the core subject of the book, I was utterly disappointed. D is for Definition
In this section Ferriss tells us to do an important task: define what you want. And I agree that most of us live through life not knowing what we want; just following the crowd like a herd of sheep. This section was the motivational, make you feel good section. This wasn't the how, it was the why, and it downright made me pumped.
E is for Elimination
Okay, so he basically says to eliminate all the junk in your life. For example: watch less TV, don't check your e-mail 50 times a day, don't look at your phone 100 times a day, don't surf the web 3 hours a day, etc. It's all good advice, nothing too fancy, or new, just plain old, "don't waste your time" advice. So far so good.
A is for automation
This is where I ran in to problems with Tim's method of creating a "4 hour workweek". First he tells us to outsource a big chunk of our lives using a VA (virtual assistant) from India or Shanghai or wherever. Basically a virtual assistant is a person who assist you in everyday task (checking emails, making reservations, doing research for your job that you got hired to do,set up appointments, etc) so basically an online-personal assistant you hire for dirt cheap. So if you are okay with some guy in India knowing your personal information (SSN, bank account number, phobias, any illnesses you might have, problems in life, and many more as Ferriss states) go ahead and outsource the things you can already do yourself to a guy in India you never met. But Ferris says that misuses of sensitive information are rare; well there could be bias behind that statement, but I'm not willing to find out if it's true or not. The irony of oustourcing your life is that you become dependent on your VA. You no longer have the urge to take control of your own life when it comes to paying bills, making reservations, or doing research for your job because your VA does it for you. So that's the paradox: out source your life, but become more dependent on a foreigner. And Ferriss quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson throughout his book as a motivational spice. But it's apparent that he never read "Self Reliance", the cornerstone of Emerson's philosophy. (Tim if you're going to use Emerson's words, how about not making a book that totally contradicts the philosophy of Emerson? Thanks).
A is for automation Pt. 2
Ferriss then goes on to tell us how we can make up to 40,000 dollars a month of automated income (little work). Basically you create a product and sell it. Plain and simple. He tells you to find a market, find the demographics of your product, make a product and sell it. Yup, your average entrepreneurship. It's nothing new, and Ferris is not an expert entrepreneur. He did have a company BrainQuicken which sells "Neural Accelerator" supplements. The site is 99% advertising and 1% scientific: It sells because it's precisely that. And the product that Ferriss started is not something revolutionary, I'll take my 200mg of caffeine before a workout any day than pay 50.00 dollars plus shipping for BrainQuicken. So if you want to make your own product, market it, sell it and make millions of dollars go ahead. Tim tells you exactly how, but what Tim doesn't tell you is that it takes a lot of work in the beginning, a lot more than 4 hours a week.
L is for Liberation
More like L is for not showing up to work, and being cynical. Now I'm against the 9-5 hours of work. I think that human beings are more efficient enough to get things done in a short period of time, and I believe that society is slowly catching on. But here's Tim's idea of "liberation". Escaping the office: not doing your job or worse, not showing up. Killing your job: quit your job. Mini retirement: take a month vacation every 2 months of work (or pattern that works best for you). Filling the Void: filling in the emptiness and the boredom you feel with fun stuff like becoming a horse archer, learning tango, and winning a fight championship by cheating.
So okay, let's say everything goes well: you are making 40,000 dollars a month, you are working no more than 4 hours a week... now what. Even Ferriss says that you will feel a void... well that sucks doesn't it? Why don't you go and talk to your VA about your problems?
Now obviously I'm against Tim's advertising methods, it's misleading. The book only sells because of the hope it gives 9-5 workers that it's possible. Oh, it's possible but unlikely. Tim is no Bil Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, or Clint Eastwood he is nowhere close to them. You see great testimonials from people from Yahoo!, Wired, Silicon Valley, and hell, from Jack Canfield about Tim's book, but not from people like Gates, Jobs, Buffett, Eastwood, or any other highly successful people, why? Because those four know that true success comes from years of hard work, and building lasting relationships with people. Those four know that decreasing your work hours, outsourcing your life, and making a tons of money is not the road to true happiness. Those four people, even if they read this book, will probably throw it in the fire. But for the cynical, "how do I work little and make tons of money" people out there (which is most of the population) this book will initially look like the next Bible. The fact that this book sold well says a lot about our society.
This is a misleading book, there are tons of other great books you can read for true success: Talent is Overrated (no BS way how people become great at what they do), 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (classic), and How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing with People... to name a few. Very few will read this review before buying, and more copies of this book will sell due to the cynical and lazy nature of people. Don't be one of those people, don't buy this book.

Unlike all of the other suspect reviews, here is a REAL one by someone who actually bought and read the book. Covers basic known marketing methods (no new "miracles"). Author is fond of in-your-face landing pages and sales sites and email autoresponder "newsletters". Plugs for her website and mentoring services (a whole chapter). I've read many marketing books so nothing new here, in fact they all mention the same techniques. If you are starting out book is an ok intro. In my opinion the book is overpriced compared to the marketing books I currently own.

In the introduction, Bob points out a key distinction of this book: "One thing that makes this book different from other "how to become a freelance writer" books on the market is the experience and financial success of the author." (page 2)
The information in Chapter 13: Maximizing Your Personal Productivity" is worth the cost of this entire book. Bob gives six keys (and the explanation in the book): Don't do everything yourself, don't shy away from the Internet, don't become addicted to Internet chat, don't get up, don't go out, and don't undervalue your time." I want my kids to do better than I have, and faster than I have. What better way than encouraging them to read a book with interviews by young entrepreneurs? In 50 Interviews: Young Entrepreneurs - What it Takes to Make More Money than Your Parents (Vol. 1) these young people have determination and ideas that most older people would never have had the guts to follow. Let's face it, if you're over the age of 40 then you came from a time when life was a bit different than it is now. You went to school, got a job, worked your way up, then eventually retired.
Younger people have opportunities that we didn't. Sure, we can follow different paths now, but I think it's wonderful that this book was written so "kids" can see that it's possible to have a business, make money, and not have to slave away for 20-30 years at a job you merely tolerate or even hate.
Every parent should have their kids read this if they want them to be successful entrepreneurs.

Children are the future.Yeah. Right. We've heard that so many times that the expression has lost all meaning. But there is truth in it. Young people see the world with fresh eyes, looking past outmoded systems and prejudices. They embrace change, they dream up new ideas, and they do it all without batting an eyelash. Incidentally, these happen to be the qualities that set entrepreneurs apart. They also happen to be qualities that are routinely squashed in the public school system. Thinking small, being obedient, and coloring within the lines are considered virtues in the classroom and for anyone looking to get a job in a cubicle. Kids are missing out when no one tells them how much they could achieve by blazing their own trail. That's why we're so passionate about 'What it Takes to Make More Money than Your Parents'. The 25 amazing young people in this book don't just reveal the secrets to their success: they are living proof of the power that young people possess. All you need is an idea and an internet connection. The interviews speak for themselves. If you're holding this book, that means you've already taken the first step to realizing your full potential and making an impact in the world. Don't stop there. We can't wait to meet you at the top.In the mean time, we'd love your support in the form of your stories, suggestions, connections, or celebratory high-fives.

No B.S. Marketing to the Affluent: The No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Guide to Getting Really Rich Review

No B.S. Marketing to the Affluent: The No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Guide to Getting Really Rich
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The very important message of this book is there is a growing number of affluent, mass-affluent and super affluent consumers that are not confined by or do not let price be the major determining factor in their purchases.
Almost anyone selling products or services to the general public will benefit from the valuable lessons contained in this book.
The book is divided into three parts. Part one describes the affluent. Part two discusses what they spend money on and part three talks about how to get them to do business with you.
This is a typical Dan Kennedy no B. S. book. It is straightforward, full of great information and well written, a bit humorous at times. Dan also, as any great marketer would, provides some information about his own products. There is no point in letting this upset you. Learn from what he does.
The central theme of the book is that it is foolish to spend your time, money and energy struggling to get money from people who have very little of it. It is much more productive to concentrate on those where price is not necessarily a major issue.
Another lesson is the more affluent the customer, the more he is looking for expertise, relationship and most of all understand. He wants, actually demands respect. The quickest way to lose an affluent customer is to show disrespect for him and his position. They want and are willing to pay for respect and special privileges.
You need to make owning your product or using your service be of significance to the user. He wants to feel that he is gaining something exclusive.
Most business owner link price to product and feel they must try to justify the price based on the intrinsic value of the product. If you are going to sell for higher margins, you must cut the link between product and price. You do this by always discussing price in context - delivering what the customer values.
The book is a study in marketing. The biggest lessons in the book are that you must get out of your own mind and understand what the customer values. You are not your customer. Focus on the experience of the customer.
And if you are going to be successful in marketing, you must have a marketing system. Random acts of marketing are of little value.
A real education in marketing. There is also a valuable CD included with the book.

Fierce Leadership: A Bold Alternative to the Worst "Best" Practices of Business Today Review

Fierce Leadership: A Bold Alternative to the Worst Best Practices of Business Today
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are fan of previous books in this type of "go against the grain" leadership genre - books like "First, Break All the Rules," "Made to Stick," "Predictably Irrational," "Slack," "The Starfish and the Spider," "Leaders," or "Stewardship," or even "Working with Emotional Intelligence" - you will not find much new here. Or at least I didn't.
If you are a big fan of benchmarking and going out to find "best practices" and then figuring out your strategy, basing your plans on what everyone else is doing versus what of that you can afford, this is THE book for you. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure you're going to be reading this review as another "best practices" book probably came out while I was writing this review and like moths to the flame, you've headed away to that glittering, glowing jewel....
For there rest of us, here is the ground that Susan Scott covers:
1. Moving away from 360-degree anonymous feedback to "365" days a year of face-to-face feedback
2. Hiring for smarts and emotional intelligence rather than just smarts
3. Modeling accountability and responsibility, not just putting them in a corporate ethics "agreement" required of all employees to sign
4. Moving away from employee "team-building" to actually being involved and supportive with your colleagues and your teams
5. Focusing on collaborating with your customers to create new products, better service, and better profits
6. Being transparent - not just in your decision-making and policies, but in getting feedback and input from your employees and your customers to acknowledge mistakes, change strategic directions, and so on
As you can see, if you're familiar with the list of books I noted at the beginning of this review, then "Fierce Leadership" is really just a regurgitation of those themes with Ms. Scott's personal take on them, her experiences, and her suggestions on steps to take in order adopt these themes.
And it is the latter that I believe is the real strength of this book - and where Ms. Scott shines - her step-by-step exercises and activities. There is little doubt that, for instance, by following her advice in Chapter 2 on hiring for smarts and emotional intelligence, you should get better employees and be a better leader.
I caution you to remember that 9 times out of 10, putting all of this into play is not just up to you. There's a whole host of other folks who are involved in implementing any one of these themes. And that's where we should all be cognizant that Ms. Scott is also a consultant, and can conveniently be brought in to help you get everyone in your organization on board.
Don't let this latter point detract from the book - just recognize that adopting these themes will require you to go against the grain, something that takes more than 306 pages of common sense.
To summarize, if you are unfamiliar with the list of resources I cited at the beginning of this review, then get "Fierce Leadership" - it will get you thinking in a new direction. If you've read many or all of the above, you'll not find much new here but may see Ms. Scott's book as a well-needed reinforcement on your journey to better business practices, better leadership, and better profit.
