(More customer reviews)The best book on the market about making it in the music or entertainment business is Doug Niedt's "How to Make a Million Dollars Playing the Guitar."
Why do I say that? First of all Mr Niedt is one of the world's greatest guitar players, he has been there and done that; just check out his concert, recording or teaching background. Second, Mr. Niedt is from Missouri (the 'show me' state). Like Harry Truman, Doug tells it like it is.
Doug gives you 9 questions to answer, for example, "I can't imagine myself doing anything else." Doug then runs you through how to set up goals, have the right attitude, keeping your finances in check and many more lessons. By the time you are finished with the book, you will have a guideline for success.
One of the striking things I learned when reading the book is that talent does not count that much. Doug explains that there are a lot of famous entertainers who do not have much talent, but they do have an audience which is very important!
Doug's book also has chapters on selling your own CDs, good business procedures, creating a web site etc. Bravo Doug, I recommend this book without equal or qualification.

INDEPENDENT REVIEW: from the editor, `Learning Difficulties Association Bulletin' 2010 (Margaret Cameron) Mark Le Messurier, 2010 Teaching Tough Kids: simple and proven strategies for student success, Routledge, London.
Following his earlier successful publication of Cognitive Behavioural Training: a how-to guide for successful behaviour , Mark has again produced a book of practical wisdom for those who work with challenging young people. To quote from the Introduction: `This book is written to enrich the ways we think about the tough kids and fortify the work we do with them in our schools.' This is exactly what the rest of the book addresses.
Mark writes in accessible, conversational style to suit a wide readership, but his ideas are firmly based in sound academic research, as well as the experience of himself and colleagues working with such `tough kids'. The theory is illustrated with numerous case study vignettes, representing a wide range of troubled and troubling behaviours - the surface manifestation of emotional and mental states where `executive function' is poor, for many and complex reasons.

Mark is committed to the belief that educators, himself included, `have the capacity to influence transformation within students'. More than wishful thinking, this belief is supported by research that identifies teachers as one of the most influential variables in student performance - more powerful than the influence of home, peers and the school as a whole. He encourages educators to engage in self-reflection, and provides some tools for doing this effectively, recognizing that our own behaviours can be part of the problem or the solution to the challenging attitudes and behaviours of students.
There is a chapter devoted to explaining restorative approaches, co-authored with Bill Hansberry, a practitioner in this area across a number of schools. This provides an alternative process to the punitive cycle that often dominates behaviour management approaches in schools.
Subsequent chapters focus on understanding the underlying factors and providing strategies to improve concentration, task completion, organization and memory. He then addresses the really difficult area of oppositional styled behaviours - approaches to working out what underlies and triggers the behaviours, and designing effective plans for improvement. Another chapter explores the particular needs of students with Asperger's syndrome, and considerations for developing improved social and emotional connections that are essential for improving their behaviour.

A chapter on `mood lifters' is a welcome reminder that lighter moments in the day can make all the difference to classroom functioning - of course with practical ideas to make this happen. Finally, and not surprisingly from such a relational author, is an explanation of the benefits of mentorship, and how such a program can be implemented.

Teaching Tough Kids is an invaluable resource for teachers and others who work with young people whose behaviour challenges their patience and personal resources. It has the potential to empower both the teachers and their students with more productive, proactive ways of thinking and behaving that make real learning and more positive living possible.

In each of their books in this series, they basically replace the title with a different business and do the same on the inside of the book. Imagine having a book about cats and then buying another book that contains the same information, but just replaces the word cat with dog. It is actually a really good rip off series and you won't know you are being fooled until you see another in the series. Pretty sneaky. Am a certified inspector and this helped very little in guiding me towards building a business in the home inspection arena. Oh well, guess it will show up at a local book sale after I donate it. Cause I would feel aweful to sell this book to anyone for any amount. Oh and for the kicker, I bought it for $25.00 on Amazon and then I found out you can buy it for $10.00 on the actual book's site. Even Amazon got tricked. LOL!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to JavaServer Pages Review

(More customer reviews)Don't be fooled by the title of this book. This is a very good book to quickly learn the basics of JSP with, if you are already familiar with Java. The style is clear, concise and friendly, without the forced (inane?) humor of many of the Idiot's and Dummies books. The codes work. I have read about five JSP books before this one, and I still had many tips and explanations to pick up from this book. It's presentation of Security is a very clear introduction to the topic. This topic is absent in virtually all other so-called beginner books on JSP. I give the book 4 stars instead of 5 because it has nothing on database access. Hopefully, the author will include this topic in the next edition of the book. It was an enjoyable read.
