As webweaver and search optimizer for my company, I'm always on Internet information overload. There's a lot to be said for any book that gives me ready access to the many topics I need to access only occasionally, as well as the many others I didn't even know I needed to know about. This book excels at taking you into the confusing fine points of using Google. Blogger tags vs. HTML? I finally got it. Self-hosting your blog? Got that, too. The subtleties of sitemaps ... at last! Yes, with a great deal of effort and eye strain you could find much of this information on Google itself. I, for one, am happy to have so much information compiled and printed next to my workstation and to have the author's knowing voice guide me over the speed bumps. A good investment because of the hours of searching it saved me, though probably doomed to a short shelf life. I only wish the book came with an update feature ...

I just attended a seminar by Mr. Schwerdtfeger and the only thing less than excellent about it was trying to pronounce his last name. I am a web business consultant and the problem is that the possibilities of social media are endless. Mr. Schwerdtfeger makes the steps that work clear and sorts out clearly what does and what does not work, and how exactly to use each form of social media. Each chapter is about 4 pages on one subject, and has a checklist of action steps at the end. This is as close to an action plan as you can find. Anyone using or needing to use social media must have this book. He doesn't say "Use Twitter," he tells you how to make it work for you. He doesn't say "Use Linkedin," but tells you what works and doesn't. BTW--he gave an excellent presentation, but you would also want the book as the details are outlined there. I have been to the workshop, reviewed the book, and read the first 8 chapters. I am definitely finishing it this weekend to develop polish up my social marketing action plan.

Wow! Finally got my hands on THE book for search engine marketing. Stoke's first book was literally my bible to search engine marketing years ago. But this one is at a whole different level! Frankly, for SEM newbies, intermediates, or advanced players, this book is great at all levels. What I love about the book is that it doesn't just talk or teach you about search marketing, it actually has a Point Of View...an approach to search marketing that you can easily incorporate into your management style. He has all of the numbers and data to back it up along with some best practices I haven't read anywhere else.
I highly recommend this book to anyone in the search marketing industry. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

I have known and followed David for a number of years. I have always admired his level of understanding for AdWords - both on the search and the display network.
When I read his book, I was impressed by the step by step walk through of all the little things that you do (or need to do) immediately after launching an AdWords campaign. I don't believe I've ever seen anyone list all those details and steps in one place.
A few of my favorite sections:
I highly recommend the section on defining personas under the researching keywords section.
Designing effective landing pages is thorough, solid.
It was refreshing to see the chapters on how to migrate your campaign into Yahoo and Bing because training and information on PPC strategies around those search engines is very hard to find.

I wrote a detailed criticism/ critique of this book, but it didn't get published...??? So here's my concise re-review: The authour spends far too much time plugging his own web sites and software than giving deep suggestions and information. This book may be ok for novices w/ AdSense: a few good tidbits here and there, but frankly, you can get far better, far more reliable and far more UNBIASED information from Google's AdSense homepage and the myriad blogs etc. on AdSense. I'm very suprised that the overall feedback for this book was as high as it is! Save yourself the money, go to the source at Google directly.

I wanted to use the structured approach to SEO presented in this book but it was mainly a waste of my time. The system is based on the frequency of searchs for your keywords but can not be used since the suggested tools are no longer available and/or based on very old data. SEO changes rapidly and I was hoping this recently published book would be more topical. Frequent plugs for his website are a distraction and the book is unnecessarily jargon heavy. It did get me to follow through on some things so I'm giving it 2 stars.

Google Analytics 2.0 Review

Google Analytics 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read a ton of guides and information on Google Analytics, have taken a 6 week training course (provided by ROI Revolution who happen to be mentioned in this book as it would have it) and have used it for my companies sites as well as some of my clients. I had never read the first version of this book due to the not-so-flattering reviews of it so I decided to take a look at the latest version to see what it had to offer and if it had any useful content I had missed.
After reading it I would say that it is a useful basic guide for anyone getting started with Google Analytics as well as for those looking to brush up on their knowledge and to have a handy guide. There are also some solid, advanced topics they cover in the book such as regular expressions, advanced filters, as well as many side bars and notes during chapters. However, some of these advanced topics feel like they have been thrust upon the reader under the assumption that the reader already has some understanding of some of the advanced topics. I feel as there was not enough back-story to properly introduce some of their advanced topics and many times the location of these advanced topics messed with the flow of the book; they were introduced at times when the section of the book you were reading was rather basic.
The flow of the book (and the interesting tone at some points) seemed a bit off to me and one of the biggest things in Google Analytics was completely left out or barely even touched upon and that was setting up tracking for an E-Commerce site. There is a lot that goes into this (though it is not necessarily difficult but there are many different variables and codes you will need to know and utilize) and you truly need to assess your website and how it is structured before setting up the tracking code, the hidden form and some of the other utm functions (too little time and space to explain all that here). I was very surprised, and quite dissapointed actually, this was completely left out as it it really is a huge part of Google Analytics. They also did not mention or explain many of the other different variables and codes that allow you to more fully take advantage of Google Analytics and make it work just right for you and your business.
Not a bad basic guide to have handy for understanding the reports and some other things but really surprised at how much they left out for the sake of some of the really basic stuff they left in or espoused upon way too much. There are other resources you will need to truly grasp the whole setup process for more complex websites; this book makes it all seem so simple and basic as it doesn't explain that all too well.

The Six-Figure Second Income: How To Start and Grow A Successful Online Business Without Quitting Your Day Job

I enjoyed reading this book. I purchased it from Amazon because Jim Cockrum endorsed it in his newsletter (which is how I heard of it). The book basically outlines step by step how to set up an information product business online. The first chapter explains why this business model is ideal for most people, due to low overhead and the almost bottomless demand for information products online. Chapter 2 suggests ways to build a profitable infoproduct quickly. I think they should have explained the "profitable" side of things a bit more explicitly. For example, while many people might have collections of recipes at home they think they could sell online, most people searching for recipes online are searching for FREE information, not an ebook they have to pay for. Ideally, you should create an infoproduct for a market where infoproducts are already selling well. Scanning the categories of products on Clickbank.com is a good way to get ideas for products of your own. If you aren't sure what to create, think about the products that people are already selling on Clickbank, and then come up with a complementary or supplemental product that would be a logical "upsell" to the audience for those products. This is the most important decision you will make, and determines if your product will sell, more than any other factor. Beyond that the book outlines the different content formats you can choose to make, how to set up a website, get traffic and turn your "prospects into buyers." I learned the most from chapter 6, and I think that chapter alone is worth the price of this book. While it doesn't explicitly teach you how to write a sales letter it tells you some important things to consider when setting up your sales page. I think a few sales letter examples and a simple template would have enhanced this chapter a lot, especially for beginners who are new to information marketing online. A separate chapter on outsourcing would have been helpful also. My thoughts are you should probably write rough drafts of your ebook and sales page and then outsource the rewrites to someone more experienced to "clean them up" for you. I prefer vWorker for all my outsourcing, since I have the option to pay for deliverables only, rather than for time. It seems to result in faster turnaround, and since the funds are escrowed, I don't have to release them until I am completely happy with the end product. For beginners, I also recommend using e-Junkie rather than Clickbank or 1shoppingcart. With e-junkie you get payment processing, but they also create expiring download links automatically and I believe they also host your actual product files, so you don't have to create any web pages yourself other than just the sales letter page, with the order button connecting to your e-junkie checkout. That saves time, and also eliminates some of the learning curve with having to create web pages and learning to FTP your files to a download page, as well as not having to learn to install a script to create expiring download links yourself. If you're a beginner and you don't know much about web design you should probably try out Blinkweb's hosting - you get a free domain name and a wysiwyg editor that includes simple sales page templates that are super easy to use, and are designed specifically for information marketers. All you have to do at that point is upload an image of an "add to cart" button and link it to your e-junkie account for checkout. e-Junkie does the rest. If you don't like paying $14.99 a month for hosting and you don't mind the learning curve, then google "Chris Farrell" and sign up for his free "Success Grenade" videos that walk you through web page setup step by step. You'll learn how to FTP your web site, create download and squeeze pages, upload files to your site's hosting account and more. I think Blinkweb + e-Junkie would save you more time and let you get your business up and running a lot faster, but if you don't mind a few months extra work and study, you can learn to do it the "hard way" through Chris Farrell's video series. Overall, "The Six-Figure Second Income" has a lot of good ideas and recommendations, even though I disagree with some of the recommendations in chapter 4, since they aren't very beginner-friendly, and can stymie someone for months before they can get an actual product online. Even if you start with only Blinkweb for hosting/web design, e-Junkie for shopping cart/payment processing, and the basic Aweber account for managing your customer list, it will cost under $40 a month to get going, and takes a lot of the technical stuff off your plate.

Google's PageRank and Beyond: The Science of Search Engine Rankings Review

Google's PageRank and Beyond: The Science of Search Engine Rankings
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Langville and Meyer have done a superb job describing both Google's technical foundations, and the broader subject of how search engines rank pages. Over half the book is devoted to explaining the maths and rationales behind PageRank. The level of maths is understandable to those who have done some university level courses on linear algebra (i.e. matrices).
The book also has considerable value in analysing what other organisations (like search engines) and researchers have cobbled together. It gives a useful summation of the state of the research, circa 2006. Essentially, everyone seems to focus on link analysis, after Google revolutionised the industry in 1998 by using this. It blew away the previous leader, AltaVista.
It is true, as the authors point out, that most of the material here has already been published. But as discrete events, scattered through various scientific journals and websites. You can certainly get explanations of PageRank on several websites. But the mathematical depth and reliability of those discussions can vary with the site. The book is far handier.
It is a good starting point, if you are interesting in devising your own search methods.

Why doesn't your home page appear on the first page of search results, even when you query your own name? How do other web pages always appear at the top? What creates these powerful rankings? And how? The first book ever about the science of web page rankings, Google's PageRank and Beyond supplies the answers to these and other questions and more.

The book serves two very different audiences: the curious science reader and the technical computational reader. The chapters build in mathematical sophistication, so that the first five are accessible to the general academic reader. While other chapters are much more mathematical in nature, each one contains something for both audiences. For example, the authors include entertaining asides such as how search engines make money and how the Great Firewall of China influences research.

The book includes an extensive background chapter designed to help readers learn more about the mathematics of search engines, and it contains several MATLAB codes and links to sample web data sets. The philosophy throughout is to encourage readers to experiment with the ideas and algorithms in the text.

Any business seriously interested in improving its rankings in the major search engines can benefit from the clear examples, sample code, and list of resources provided.

Many illustrative examples and entertaining asides
MATLAB code
Accessible and informal style

Beginning Java Google App Engine Review

I was very frustrated with my purchase and I was contemplating to write a review out of frustration. However, after I've seen the 5-star reviews from other users, I couldn't believe my eyes. One review was raving about the code samples (absolutely ridiculous) and then I saw one other reader leaving a comment for the review saying that he's been working on the sample code for weeks and still couldn't make it work and I can relate to that.
I pre-order this book from Amazon and when I start reading it, it was a total disappointment. I've been working on GAE/J for a while now and I bought this book specifically to learn more about Google Accounts. The example projects are not complete and it requires you to fill in the blanks to make them work. I've also looked at the other chapters and they lack in content. The book tries to give you overall, breadth-first view of the technology (as you would expect from a beginner level book), but while doing so it mentions about bunch of GAE topics, but fails on giving good coverage for that topic. Especially in chapter 4, when the author(s) talk about frameworks, they don't mention about gotchas on how to make these frameworks work at the first place, because if you're using Spring, BlazeDS and GraniteDS (or any other frameworks, you need to do certain tweaks to make these frameworks/technologies/APIs work with GAE, because some of the Java APIs are "black-listed" by the App Engine for the obvious reasons.
If you're a beginner, this is not a book for you. If you're advanced, then again this book doesn't give you enough in-depth information of the GAE/J topics. In conclusion, it's sad to say, but this book is useless! You can save money just by going to Google's App Engine website and find more up-to-date and complete information, because they keep changing/upgrading the SDKs for GWT and the App Engine almost every month.

Cloud Computing Bible Review

Cloud Computing Bible
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As technology advances, new buzzwords appear in the lexicon. Lately, we've been hearing more and more about "cloud computing." If you use Google Docs, Evernote, Dropbox, or web-based email, you're using cloud computing. According to Wiktionary.org, cloud computing is, "Computing in which services and storage are provided over the Internet (or `cloud')." Pretty simple, right? Maybe for us, as the user, but there are a lot of details that need to be worked out to create a cloud service.
This is where Cloud Computing Bible by Barrie Sosinsky comes in. If you're looking for a book that explains how to use some of the cloud services mentioned above, stop here. This is not a how-to book on specific applications or services. If, however, you're looking to create a cloud-based service, whether for public consumption or your own private company, then continue reading.
Cloud Computing Bible is divided into five parts: Examining the Value Proposition, Using Platforms, Exploring Cloud Infrastructures, Understanding Services and Applications, and Using the Mobile Cloud. Sosinsky goes into great detail explaining what cloud computing is and why it may or may not benefit a particular business. He discusses the architecture of building a cloud, how to address security, storage issues, and managing the cloud. In addition to these, and other topics, Cloud Computing Bible contains loads of diagrams, tables, screenshots, and web links to further explain points or to look up more information.
The only real issue I have with this book is the reading level listed on the back cover. I consider myself relatively technology savvy with reasonable intelligence, and much of the book was far beyond me. Classifying the reading level as Beginning to Advanced is a bit of a stretch. Someone with experience in programming or information technology (IT) would better appreciate everything Cloud Computing Bible has to offer. Intermediate to Advanced is more appropriate.
If you, or someone you know, is thinking of working with cloud computing, the Cloud Computing Bible would be a good starting point.

We keep hearing that measurement is going to be the most important skill for social media practitioners this year. The ability to match a metric to an objective that will measure a specific outcome will start to separate the social media men from the boys, as they say. If you want to get a handle on that process, this book is for you. If you just want to measure hits, likes and retweets, you just might get a paradigm shift reading the book.
Katie D. Payne's Measure What Matters is the preeminent work in this area to date. I know I'm going out on a limb saying that, because there have been some good books written on measurement. But nothing as thorough and in-depth as this, in my view. I've read them all, believe me.
Even though this book includes some heavy lifting, it's worth the time it takes to read carefully and learn. Those of us without a business or marketing degree may have to slow down in some spots, but for the most part, this book goes at a pace that most marketing and communications practitioners should easily feel comfortable with. I love the fact that the book also offers specfic advice on measuring events, relationships with local communities, higher ed, crisis, internal employee relationships, sales and partner relationships, and the list goes on. It is thorough, and it will open your eyes to the fact that there are much more effective ways of measuring than HITS (How Idiots Track Success). Must read.

Web Geek's Guide to Google Chrome Review

I purchased this book to learn more about this alternative to Internet Explorer (IE). The book details the foundation of Chrome and how it differs (and compares)to IE. The book helped me to move over, with a higher degree of comfort than I'd had without it. I feel the way Chrome works, with prefetching, folders, etc; combined with a home screen designed by and for ME make it, as a clear preference to IE.
