If you own a small business (or large one, for that matter) you've heard the buzz about social media. You've been told and told again you NEED to get on it, but you have no idea where to start. Monica Obrien's social pollination is where every business should start. It should be on the desk of every business owner looking to dive into social media, or thinking about hiring someone to do it for them. The book comes armed with relevant case studies, insight from leading experts, and most importantly, step by step guides for beginners (and experts). After reading the book, the reader will answer four important questions:
1) What is social media and how can it be leveraged as a business tool?
2) Is social media right for me? What business objectives can it help MY business achieve?
3) What are the specifics tactics and steps I need to take to accomplish those objectives in a cost-effective, timely manner?
4) How can I track and measure my progress and ROI.
There are many social media books that do a phenomenal job explaining how social media is changing the business world. However most of them stop there, and the reader is left thinking "ok, well, now what?" Monica picks up where those books leave off, by providing actionable tactics and tips business owners can implement immediately after reading.
The book does not tout social media as a cure all solution, like many experts and books seem to do. Instead she encourages readers to think of social media as a business TOOL. The author helps the reader understand the types of goals and objectives they might hope to accomplish, before deciding if social media is worth it for them.
From there, she provides a thorough overview of best practices and specific strategies. It a comprehensive guide book that a marketing team can use to get started right away. At the very least, it can be used to combat any outside social media hires who are charging without adding any real value.
All in all, this is a must read for business owners, marketing professionals, or students looking to understand the next monumental shift in marketing/advertising.

Unlocking Android: A Developer's Guide Review

Unlocking Android: A Developer's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a must have book for anybody doing Android development. It is definitely targeted at developers who are new to Android -- which describes most Android developers out there given what a new platform it is. However, the level of depth on many topics and the clarity provided behind many key concepts in Android are so well done that this book will benefit anyone working on Android applications.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section is called "What is Android? -- The Big Picture." I have to admit, I thought this might be fluff, but it is definitely not. The overview is good, but what the real value is the explanation on getting your development environment setup. This is something that many books fail to mention at all, as it can be a tricky topic to illustrate in a book. It is well done here, and can definitely be a big time save for new developers. More of this kind of "how to" material is also presented in the appendices.
The second part is called "Exercising the Android SDK" and is the real meat of the book. It takes a very practical, top-down approach to Android application development. It starts off by explaining UI concepts, then intents and services. It then dives into excellent detail on some of the key aspects of mobile application development: working with data, using the Internet, telephony, notifications, graphics, multimedia, and GPS. I would recommend that you immediately read the chapters 3-6 (UI, intents, services, data management, Internet) as these are really the building blocks of any mobile app that is not a game. The other chapters are great too, but you can probably read them as needed. Maybe you don't need GPS today, but need it three months from now. Just read chapter 11 at that time, and you will have no problem. The chapters are self-contained enough for this, while there is still a nice flow of thought between them as well.
The last part of the book is called "Android Applications." It starts off with a very nice example of creating a very "full" application. It really drives in all of the previous material, and is a veritable cookbook of sample code. There are a lot of clever little things you might want to do in your application that you can find an easy to follow sample of in this chapter. I found myself thinking "oh I'm going to rip this off and re-do some part of an existing app." The last chapter is title "Hacking Android" and is all about writing an application in C to run "closer to the metal" on Android. This is probably not that useful to most developers, but I imagine it would be invaluable if you actually did need to do something like this. If nothing else, it is a good read and reveals fascinating aspects of Android's internals. It certainly demonstrates the technical mastery of the authors.

Pro ASP.NET 4 in VB 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So you want develop ASP.NET web sites? Then you'll get a really good start with this book, whether you're new to ASP.NET or you have worked with an earlier version. Like so many books, the first part goes through some very basic stuff, like using Visual Studio, but it's easy to skip that part if you don't need it; after all it's just the first 100 pages out of a total of more than 1600 pages packed with information. The table of contents is 25 pages long, so you can imagine how many topics are covered in this book. If you have worked with ASP.NET before, you may like that some chapters contains a "Changed in ASP.NET 4" section that highlights changes to earlier versions of ASP.NET.
The book is very well written and there is a good flow in the topics. Even though there is some basic stuff in the book, you need to have some programming skills and knowledge of VB.NET and the .NET Framework before you dig into this. Most, if not all, areas of ASP.NET 4 are covered and you'll also find that a lot of other topics like ADO.NET, LINQ, and XML etc. are covered as well. The book is divided in five parts and I am delighted to find that a whole part is dedicated to securing you web site with the ASP.NET security model and topics like Authentication, Authorization, Roles and Cryptography. With the Internet today you can hardly imagine publishing a web site without being worried about its security.
The book is also an excellent reference that you'll probably keep returning to; at least I know I will. I recommend this book to both beginner and experienced ASP.NET developers.

Why Don't They Call Me: Job Search Wisdom To Get You Unstuck

Why Don't They Call Me? is a must-read for anyone who works in the corporate world, regardless of your current employment situation. The odds are you'll be let go from a job at some point in your career, and you better be prepared to know how to carry out an effective job search. What worked a few short years ago (job search boards) to find a job, is a low-yield strategy according to the author. What is the most effective way to find a job according to Michael--networking.
... and I completely agree.
Now for those of you thinking cold calling can't possibly work, I can assure you it does. Following the author's script for dealing with gate-keepers, I was easily connected with the hiring manager on my very first call without even knowing his name. We ended up having a lengthy conversation and he was so impressed with my initiative, that he asked for a copy of my resume even though I had zero experience in that particular field! In the end, I lost out to someone with experience in the Technology field but it didn't really matter. By simply connecting with someone who had the power to hire me, I no longer was waiting for them to call me... I was calling them!
I especially liked Michael's chapter on social networking. I never realized the power of Twitter and Facebook until the author explained how to use these free mediums to help you find a job.
The author's website picks up where his book lets off by giving you the tools you need to ace your interview. Job-interview-wisdom.com is written with the same warm and friendly tone as his book, and it's obvious Michael Petras is a person who enjoys helping people. I've learned numerous tips and tricks that have helped me in interviews and plan on visiting the site for years to come!

I was required to read this book for a class I was taking. At first glance I thought it would be "just another textbook." However, I quickly realized what a goldmine of information and guidance the book delivers. It takes a huge concept and breaks it down into readily usable applications. Too often I will find great theory resources, but they will lack the day-to-day nitty gritty of application. This book has the theory, the steps, the handouts, even the lesson plans. I found the readability engaging and direct. Great resource and great introduction into the miasma of inquiry-based research and 21st literacy skills. Thank you, Drs. Eagleton and Dobler, you have given me a launch into a whole new curriculum!

The Public Domain Publishing Bible: How to Create Royalty Income for Life, 2nd Updated Edition Review

The Public Domain Publishing Bible: How to Create Royalty Income for Life, 2nd Updated Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Andras M. Nagy is a self-proclaimed gambler. The enterprise described in his book The Public Domain Publishing Bible is not to be undertaken by the faint at heart.
Public domain titles contain initial publication dates before 1923. According to U.S. copyright law, anyone can republish these titles for profit. Nagy stresses that it is imperative to add original content to these works in terms of illustrations, footnotes, introductory material, covers, etc. Otherwise, you will be competing with numerous versions of these titles republished without modification. He states that sometimes Amazon.com will not even pick up your version if you merely republish the text as is.
The field is also littered with what Nagy calls "copyright bullies." These individuals claim that they own the copyright to a public domain title. Their claim is invalid, but they will attempt to intimidate you by suggesting legal action. In the very least, their aim is to get you to cease publishing the work. Nagy urges you to stand your ground and demand proof of ownership. Personally, I don't know if I would want to run into potential legal problems. Nagy recommends hiring the U.S. Copyright Office to investigate the copyright status of a title before publishing it. It is a financial drawback at $150 an hour.
To make money Nagy uses print-on-demand (POD). If he has the only in-print version of a public domain title, he uses Ingram's Lightning Source to take advantage of the wholesaler's extensive distribution network. If he's competing against other republished versions, Amazon's CreateSpace has lower set-up fees. He recommends using free software applications such as Scribus, Open Office and Gimp to cut start-up costs. Nagy also discusses book scanning for those not interested in typesetting. Optical character recognition (OPR) scans the entire physical book allowing text to be directly inputted into a word processing program. You can hire a book scanning service or invest in the equipment to create your own scans.
Nagy goes on to explain publicity tactics for promoting your public domain catalog. His main focus is on creating a web site that is search engine optimized (SEO). He explains off-the-page SEO techniques such as blogger reviews, directory submissions and article & press release distribution. On-the-page efforts entail an ALT tag for every image, keywords in page titles and anchor tags for inbound links.
At times, Nagy drifts away from his subject when he writes about creating a screenplay or the IndieBound movement. These sections would have been better off as appendices instead of breaking up the narrative.
Nagy's 10 basic rules for public domain publishing are:
1. Be selective in what you publish
2. Add creative modifications
3. Sell wholesale
4. Republishing titles as is use CreateSpace
5. Do your own set-up & design
6. Use reasonable freelancers for what you can't do
7. Take a long term view
8. Learn to work with Amazon & Lightning Source
9. Work with independent bookstores
10. Write what you know. Stick to fields you like.
Overall, this is a comprehensive guide on how to republish public domain titles with a realm of useful resources and pertinent web sites.

I have purchased used books from Amazon several times in the past. While I knew not to expect mint condition, I didn't expect to receive it in condition that it arrived in. A word of caution. When you deal with a third party supplier, you have to go to them first before you can go to Amazon. Please be careful in selecting these suppliers. It is definitely a gamble. By the way, the content of this book is great. I recommend it to everybody.

I'm not an expert by any stretch. But I've read almost every book on this subject. So I have a pretty good frame of reference.
This book is somewhat promotional for the services of the authors. Subtle but there are references scattered throughout the book that they can help you. So some of the advice is skewed toward that aim I believe. And I don't agree with all the advice. It definitely seems to be for someone going the traditional bookstore route. Common sense info on cover design and editing importance. I belive it's a bit light on content. Only 150 pages if you leave out the resources section.
And I don't think all the advice is good. They downplay POD. They make it sound like it's impossible to produce a decent looking POD book. I still think the best option for the small self-publisher/author I've found is going through lighting source. That way you maintain control and profit. They don't really talk about it. Ithink there is one sentence about it.
At one point they mention that you should price your book according to what's inside. Well, the people looking to buy it can't read it first, so you had better price it according to what your market is willing to pay for books in that category.
It seem's to really miss the boat with fulfillig on the "survive and thrive in TODAY'S literary jungle." This one's going back.

Well, I can tell you after one quick read that the new how-to book INTERNET RICH, by 16 year web selling veteran Mike Bray, and his writing partner, webmaster and ebook publishers L. J. Martin, is a straight-forward 1,2,3 method of using the internet to its best and most efficient effect. As they both say, "after all, selling is selling." And short of marrying a "royal" how else can you get your face, and your product, in front of a billion buyers?
The nuts and bolts of eBook and print-on-demand is covered. Social media is also dealt with, not only the why, but the how, with step-by-step detail of utilizing LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and others to build a dedicated list of followers for whatever your website and social media pages are pushing. In fact List Building is a chapter. And the purchase of the book gives you access to the book's webpage, which allows you to "cut and paste" many lists and resources. The links to the website, other pertinent sites, and the glossary are worth a hundred times the price of the book, available as a Kindle eBook, on SmashWords, and Nook...or in print from Amazon. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Screenwriting, 3rd Edition Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Screenwriting, 3rd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Screenwriting" is a phenomenal overview of the increasingly popular field of screenwriting, and it is written with care, compassion, and expertise by Skip Press. Like his earlier book, "Writer's Guide to Hollywood Producers, Directors and Screenwriting Agents," this volume is chock-full of helpful advice, thoughtful analysis, and best of all, LOTS of website resources that would take hours to find on your own. Like the very best books, it will inspire you, as it has me, and I know that the screenplay I'm writing now will be better as a result of my having read this book.
If your budget is limited, buy this book, along with Robert McKee's "Story" and Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey." You'll be well-equipped to begin your own journey with these fine volumes.
Five stars!

Social Networking for the Older and Wiser: Connect with Family and Friends, Old and New (The Third Age Trust (U3A)/Older & Wiser) Review

Social Networking for the Older and Wiser: Connect with Family and Friends, Old and New (The Third Age Trust (U3A)/Older and Wiser)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Social Networking for the Older and Wiser" is an introduction to the latest internet phenomenon of social networking for those wary about becoming involved in it. Published by the Third Age Trust, the book is aimed fairly and squarely at the older reader (50+) for whom the internet may be a mysterious and potentially frightening place but which nevertheless has a very great deal to offer. The book provides a gentle and reassuring walk-through of the process of getting started safely on a number of social networking environments. The language is kept non-technical and clear throughout; the text is simple but never condescending. The pace is slow enough to be easily followed by even the most techno-phobic of readers and yet sufficiently rapid for the reader to feel they are progressing quickly in the use of what is probably the most exciting development in on-line functionality since the emergence of the World Wide Web itself. The book introduces what are probably the three most significant social networking sites of interest to its UK target audience -- Facebook, Friends Reunited and Twitter -- before moving on to look at three more specialised "niche" social networking sites, Saga Zone, Eons, Meetup and Ning.
The emphasis of the book is mostly one of reassurance and its message that social networking is not only safe but also easy and enormously beneficial, provided one approaches it properly. In that regard, this book should be a huge success. It does most of what it sets out to do reasonably well; Sean McManus seems to understand his target audience and their needs -- and anxieties -- very well indeed. There are a number of shortcomings of the book, however, which I feel will limit its usefulness for some readers.
Firstly, McManus largely skirts around the issue of what social networking is really all about. At no time does he even so much as touch upon the true usefulness of social networking sites as a means of essentially turning one's whole internet usage into a single social activity. Instead, he presents Facebook, for instance, as little more than a means of sharing photographs and news stories, and Twitter as a means of telling the world what you're doing at any moment. As a result, he essentially leaves unanswered the question which any mention of social networking so frequently raises of "yes, but what's the point of it all?" Leaving that question unanswered may indeed in fewer of its intended readers from being frightened away but, by the same token, I think it does its readers a disservice by leaving them in the dark over the true power and usefulness of social networking per se. The book does little more than scratch the surface of each of the sites it covers and never really explains how to get the most out of any of those sites, or what they really aim to provide and how they differ from each other -- it just gets you started on each and shows some of the things you might use it for.
Potential buyers should also be aware that this book will age rapidly - the section on Facebook is already out of date and may confuse some people, with the site's new user interface presenting a very different appearance from that described (and pictured) in the book. Any reasonably bright reader should have no problem coping, but many may be confused by the differences and the fact that some of the things McManus describes no longer work, or no longer work in the same way.
As a guide for safely dipping a toe into the seemingly shark-infested waters of social networking, this book can be recommended (with the caveat that some parts are out of date already). For those wanting a more detailed grounding in emerging social networking rationales and the potentialities that such sites provide (in moving the on-line experience away from the computer and integrating it more fully into everyday living, for instance), I'm afraid it may fall well short of expectations.
