(More customer reviews)Rough Guide's "First-Time" series give a basic overview of a given part of the world meant to orientate people who have a vague plan of going there and a little uncertainty about independent travel. Indeed, each installment contains much the same information about basics like how to pack, how to get air tickets, and what to wear. A large portion of the book is made up of two-page summaries about each African country, excepting those currently dangerous to travel in (CAR, Buruni, Republic of Congo, Somalia). These summaries sketch the major places to see and the daily budget you'll need. There's also general coverage of African culinary traditions, health matters, and how to stay safe. I found the boxed texts with travel anecdotes fun, where travelers write in to talk about zany or touching situations they found themselves in.
There is nothing here that you couldn't pick together from disparate Internet sources. And certainly, this is more valuable as something to get psyched up with than to plan your trip in any detail. However, if your budget allows, this is an entertaining all-in-one resource to get you started on going to Africa.

Mexico City: An Opinionated Guide for the Curious Traveler Review

Along with An Opinionated Guide, we used Fodors.
For me, the great value of An Opinionated Guide was the walks it lead me and my wife on. These walks were through both the historical center and some of the wealthy and artistic neighborhoods.
I feel that the walks gave me as good a sense of Mexico City as a non-Spanish speaking tourist is likely to get in a few days.
I agree with another reviewer that sometimes it was helpful to carry along a thicker guidebook which gives longer descriptions of specific sites.
One way in which this criticism does not seem fair, however, is that many of the sites that the walks cover are not so much historically or culturally important (a famous painting or a building by an important architect)as they are important in showing an aspect of Mexican life: transvestite hair dressers in a flower market and how this reveals the tolerance of Mexican society or a uniform shop where the mannequins are posed like famous sculptures such as the Pieta and how this shows the presence of a folk art tradition.
I think this is an essential book for anyone traveling for pleasure to Mexico City.

(More customer reviews)If you are thinking about buying a dog (it explains puppy mills, contracts to consider when you buy a dog and licensing laws); you already have a dog (laws you might want to consider even if you're sure your dog is always well-behaved and how to get dog insurance); you want to provide for your dog after your death (what may or may not work in your will); you hate your neighbor's dog's barking (how to talk to your neighbor or seek mediation, or your liability if you are cruel or provoke the dog) or if you suspect your neighbor's dog is mistreated or are in any other way concerned about dogs: YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. There is much more covered than what I have put here.
I expected to read a few key chapters, but ended up reading it cover to cover. It contains interesting facts throughout (have you ever thought about the number of dogs injured/killed by riding in the back of a pick-up truck?), history of dog laws, real cases and the rulings in those cases (though obviously missing the recent case of Ms. Whipple's murder); and sound, common-sense advice whether it is written in the law or not.
For the sake of the dogs and the people who own or are around them, I hope everybody will read this book.

I found the authors website based on the book and then I pre-ordered it and got it only the day after it was officially released on July 1st, 2009. WARNING: Full on raving and 5 star shenanigans ahead...
I read this book in 2 days. Not an easy feat as I look after two girls, 9 and 2, AND a 44 year old kid posing as my husband.
Once I read the first few sentences I could not put it down. Now, granted, my husband and I have been talking about a trip like this for as long as we have been together, and we place world travel very high on our priority list, so that could be why I just inhaled the thing. But don't take my word for it either! Just check out Amazon.com! In just 6 weeks this non-fiction delight has garnered ONLY 5 star ratings, and rave reviews. And I can totally understand why.
John Higham is a rocket scientist. Not as in, "Oh gee, it doesn't take a rocket scientist." No, he really IS one. He and his wife took 10 years to plan the "world the round" trip (as one of his children exclaimed in their toddler years), and he not only gives great detail of their travels but it is entertaining as heck and hilarious at times! When was the last time you laughed out loud while reading a travel memoir other than a Bill Bryson? Not only is it wildly entertaining, it is also educational without being text-booky, and honestly? You just feel like you are along for the ride, the tandem bike ride, as that is how this family largely travelled. Surviving on ham sandwiches and hitting the off-off beat track and getting sidetracked by some crazy stuff, you will feel like you know each and everyone of these people intimately. Not only that, if you have any interest at all in travelling the world? This will definitely inspire you to google earth yourself an itinerary.
The other neat thing the author did, he created a layer within Google Earth and there are many photos and extra little anecdotes to follow along as you read. Every time you see the little Google Earth symbol in the text you can visit the website and see the added bonus! GENIUS! All in all a FANTASTIC read for anyone, but especially those of us wanting to travel with our kids.

(More customer reviews)I was searching for a book that I could relate to since I'm not in my twenties anymore, or even thirties for that matter. This has a lot of good information and I'm finding it very useful for planning my travels.
My only criticism is with regard to all of the volunteer opportunities they've pasted on many pages throughout the book for which people must pay in order to participate. I can only assume that the writers/publishers of this book are receiving gratuities for doing this. However, in my research I've found that these companies are not all that they seem in these advertisements or their websites and I encourage anyone considering that route to do his/her research before committing and paying thousands of dollars to volunteer somewhere else in the world.
All in all, this book was a good investment for references but you can obtain the same information and more with enough dedication and time spent searching the internet.

I've gone into the Tapo bus station in Mexico City and chosen my destination based on what bus was leaving soonest (Chiapas). I've eaten in Maya, Zapotec, Totonac, and Mixe village kitchens. One Holy Thursday I happened into a Mixe curing ceremony (which included a turkey sacrifice) on the peak of a remote mountain, then joined the indigenous speaking curandera, her client, and the client's mother in a drink of pulque afterwards. I've traveled by every class of bus, top to bottom, day and night. In every case, I have always had a sense of what was happening culturally thanks to Carl and Lorena's book, The People's Guide to Mexico. It is the only book I know of that could prepare one for Mexico. When the men are slaughtering a pig behind the house, while women are kneading masa and washing banana leaves to make tamales for a fiesta; from banana trees to eating cactus paddles; during impromptu living room sing-alongs; or drinking homemade capolin wine; you will not be unprepared. With Carl's illustrated discussion of Mexican hand signals, his introduction to Mexican cooking, and references to Mexican music you will be an insider.
None of my adventures duplicates any of Carl's accounts. Like the best kind of education, Carl and Lorena teach one how to understand Mexican culture in order to use the understanding in new or unusual circumstances, of which Mexico has an endless supply.
Even if you have a Mexican spouse, you need this book. The truth is that one even needs this book to understand what is going on in Postville, Iowa these days.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book hoping that it could provide some insight into the laws surrounding a travel-based business or provide some really helpful insights into building the business, but really this book is less about the travel aspect, and more about the nuts and bolts of building any business and really has little focus on the travel industry in particular.
Even as a setting up your business book, it provides brief overview of what you need to do, but doesn't really dive deep into any particular topic. One topic that I found especially bizarre within the book was about creating your travel website as an e-commerce website and how you could start that business via E-bay -- there's a good part of a chapter dedicated to that, but when I look at the variety of travel websites out there and talk to people in the industry, very few associate travel with an e-commerce website.
Furthermore, the choice of highlighted providers are odd and I've barely heard of some of them and surprised that some of the big players are not even mentioned.
I wouldn't waste your money on this one...
