The New Forensics: Investigating Corporate Fraud and the Theft of Intellectual Property Review

The New Forensics: Investigating Corporate Fraud and the Theft of Intellectual Property
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The New Forensics is a fascinating account of the ways in which some unlikely and unsung heroes of the digital age ' forensic accounting specialists ' ferret out evidence of crimes ranging from corporate fraud to homicide, from intellectual property piracy to secretion of assets from Holocaust victims in Swiss banks. This is no dry textbook: the author obviously has a deep passion for his subject matter and a natural gift for storytelling, both of which come across in an easily readable, almost breezy prose style. In an interwoven series of stories of greed, arrogance and shady dealings ' some well known, like Enron and WorldCom, others not so well known - the author gives even the novice a comprehensible education in computer forensics and accounting concepts without "dumbing down" or oversimplifying these topics. Though the techniques used by the investigators and described in this book reflect the state of the art at the time the investigations were conducted, the human weaknesses and strengths that underlie the use of technology both to perpetrate and uncover misconduct are timeless, and they are ultimately the real subject matter of this fine book. For what it has to say, and for way in which the author tells these stories, this book ought to be required introductory reading on college campuses and in business and law schools. In fact, anyone who is interested in real-life crime drama, in computer and software technology and high-tech sleuthing, or in the rise and fall of the "dot-com/dot-gone" economy, will enjoy this book. Highly recommended.

I ordered this book as part of a larger effort by my firm to modernize our internet presence. We now have a social media presence on all of the major sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), and we've seen an uptick in client referrals through these sites. This book was generally useful for insuring that our initial foray into social media was at least somewhat sophisticated. The information was dense in some places, but it was still understandable.

Principles of Auditing & Assurance Services with ACL Software CD Review

Principles of Auditing and Assurance Services with ACL Software CD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book at Amazon for an online Auditing class at UC Berkeley as a required text. I completed the class and did well, in spite of the book. Auditing is very detailed, structured subject. How the author could create such a jumble is beyond me. If I was a crook I'd want the author as my auditor. If he audits like he writes I'm home free. I normally don't do reviews on textbooks, but this book is so bad it warrants special treatment.(It is true the international edition is much cheaper and exactly the same. I was fortunate enough to find one. Don't waste more money on the US version. It's bad. Paying more for it makes it worse. The ISBN number: 978-0-07-017054-4) The author lacks the ability to be concise. The material on any one subject is scattered all through the book. In some case repeated, in others missing in one chapter only to be included in another. Lists of important terms are incomplete. The index is poor. Suggested reference material locators in the problem section don't refer you to the appropriate sections in the chapter. It's as if a number of people wrote the book and didn't talk. I can't image using this as a reference book in the future, since the material on any subject is not stated completely in one place. There is too much competing explanation. Also the author talks too much and takes forever to get to the point, or buries the point in never-ending language of questionable relevance or repeated topics. In a good reference the subject to be discussed is clearly defined at the start of the chapter or section. The salient points are immediately summarized, then detailed explanation of each point is clearly and consistently presented. Or if not that, some form is at least consistently followed to present the material across all chapters, so the reader learns where to look for things. This book follows no particular form from chapter to chapter. Sometime even within the chapter, some material is in charts and lists while other times is buried in paragraphs. Sometimes bold faced. Sometimes italicized. Sometimes important ideas are not made note of in any particular way, buried forever. Also the language is not consistent across sections and chapters. In the problems new terms are introduced that were not defined in the chapters, but have the same meaning as the topics in the chapter. Get use to looking up definitions on Google. This book is a very painful read, particularly in an online class where you are pretty much left on your own. There must be better more concise treatments of auditing. Avoid this book if you have any choice in the matter.

Financial Accounting (Media Enhanced Edition) Review

Financial Accounting (Media Enhanced Edition)
Average Reviews:

I used this Textbook in my MBA Financial Accounting course at DePaul Unversity in Chicago, IL. I had very little knowledge of the topic before I took this class.
This book is well written, well organized, and is not too wordy. Because of the depth of this book and its brevity, every sentence is important and I found I had to reread chapters about three times before I really understood the material.
I did notice a few minor typos in the chapter exercises, but for the most part I found it extremely accurate.
This is a difficult subject and this book covers much material. Each chapter must be read carefully. To fully understand the material, I highly encourage doing the exercises in the back of each chapter. Houghton Mifflin has the answer keys in Excel files on their web site, but you need a password to get it.
I can understand the person who found this book confusing. I don't think this book is great for somebody new to the subject. But after getting your feet wet in the subject, this is an excellent text.
This book will make a wonderful reference for years to come. In fact, my father, a small business owner wants my copy.

I am going to presume (I know that's not very smart, but I'm going to do it anyway) that you're already decided on Quickbooks software. So the reason you're reading this book review is to determine if you want to buy this book to learn what to do with it.
This book is pare of Que's 'On Demand' series of books. It's a visual quick reference guide that uses a task oriented philosophy to show/describe how to do things in Quickbooks. Specifically, say you want to Schedule a Recurring Transaction, that is, a bill that needs to be paid the tenth of every month for the same amount. You can look up: Recurring Transactions or Scheduled Transactions in the index or Scheduling Recurring Transactions in the Table of Contents. All of these lead you to page 189. Page 189 is printed with two columns. The left hand column has a set of instructions on how to do the task. The right hand column has pictures of what the screen should look like as you follow the instructions.
So you read through the whole book quickly, learning at least the basic idea of what you can do. Get Quickbooks installed (page 2), register it (page 5), and work you way through the first couple of chapters. Then skip around to get what you want done, as you decide to implement those features.
It's a pretty handy way to learn a software system.

I only wish this book had been out years ago when I decided to venture off into the world of start-ups. This book is a fantastic read if you are thinking of turning your passion into your own business. My suggestion for anyone thinking of starting their own company is to first buy this book and then think deeply about the risks involved, and if you still think they are truly worth it, then read this book AGAIN! Most people don't know that the chances of a start-up succeeding are pretty slim. However, if you are still convinced that your idea is brilliant and that starting up your own company is what you want to do then this book is a must have.
The book explains some of the obstacles that you will encounter and examines both the mundane and the meticulous details you will need to think about while trying to set up shop and navigate your way through the heady world of business ~ all while trying to get paid! The best part about Whoops is that it is optimistic yet honest in its assessment of starting up a new company. A very important fact Whoops touches upon, which is often overlooked is that perseverance alone isn't enough to keep your company in business. If you decide to take the plunge don't do it without Whoops!

Outcome-Based Marketing New Rules for Marketing on the Web Review

Outcome-Based Marketing New Rules for Marketing on the Web
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John is one of the most savvy marketers I know. His sage advice is field focused and road tested. He's been in the trenches of both technical marketing as well as years of helping small business find the on-ramp to using the Internet to gain visibility for their brand and products.
The approach of this book is comprehensive yet modular -- you don't have to read through the whole book to begin to get value from what you've learned from each section. John breaks it out into easy-to-consume "chunks" that teach you not only the concepts of Internet marketing, but also the principles of why you do these things. Then he takes you through the how of implementing. The book is particularly well arranged with helpful navigational tools to let you know where you are and summary comments at the end of each section to reinforce what you've learned.
Starting with strategic thinking, he outlines the tactical action items necessary to reach the goals that a company has set. He addresses the different roles in an organization, and how each one manages or contributes to the marketing effort.
But the big payoff is how John explains the use of the major social platforms. He discusses the "rules of the road" for each of them -- LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter... even Foursquare -- how each is unique, addressing different user populations, use cases, and target audiences. He separates the fact from the fad. And he keeps you out of trouble by explaining the special "Netiquette" of each.
John's particular expertise is SEO, Search Engine Optimization, and I know of no one who is better at doing it. He's been helping companies for years raise their visibility on the Internet, and getting them the most bang for the buck from their web advertising dollar.
This is a uniquely valuable book for any company to either start their online marketing efforts, or to a help a company that is already "on line" to step up their game to leverage latest social networks and platforms to expand their web presence.

How to Write a Business Plan Review

How to Write a Business Plan

I was disappointed with this book because I had thought it would be broader and relate to all kinds of businesses. But this book is very specific to the entrepreneur starting up his or her own business, only. Its examples are mostly of home-based businesses or small sole proprietorships. The writing is sometimes condescending and assumes you know nothing whatsoever about finances and investments (which may be good for some readers). It includes several chapters of additional information for start-up companies which take up a significant portion of the book and have little or nothing at all to do with writing a business plan. I feel like this book is mistitled and would be better named, "Mike's Guide to Founding and Funding your Own Business."

How to Start a Successful Home-Based Freelance Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation Business Review

How to Start a Successful Home-Based Freelance Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This books certainly contains some helpful information if you're going to start you own bookkeeping business, but 3 major things make me recommend you think twice before purchasing this book:

1. To say frankly, this books is about starting ANY professional service business, not just bookkeeping. It certainly refers to some accounting topics - i.e. choosing accounting software etc., but essentially it gives you no idea about how to build competitive advantage of your bookkeeping business and doesn't tell you any ins and outs of this particular business type
2. This books is poorly edited - it has two authors and it looks like these authors wrote different part of the books and nobody took time to make sure that the book is cohesive and doesn't say the same ideas twice. Pictures in this book just magnify the impression of a poor editor work - they are absolutely not stylish and resemble the standard picture set of MS Word in 1990s. This is certainly not to say that poor editing will preclude you from understanding what this book is about, but I expected much more from the item priced at $40.
3. Talking about "Tax preparation" part of this book, the whole content of this chapter can be put into one sentence "At some point of time in developing your bookkeeping business, you might find it interesting to expand your services into tax preparation field". Well, this looks too simplistic to me - taxation is one of the most complicated areas of finance and just to say that sometimes you will wake up and decide to get into this field and next morning you will be there is just odd.
To put is short, if this book cost $15 and were titled "A couple of nice ideas about getting into the world of services business", I would certainly give it 5 star. But a combination of this book's actual name and its $40 cost only earns a 3 star rating.
