Are you a Lotus Sametime user? If so, then IBM Lotus Sametime 8 Essentials: A User's Guide should be on your Must Read list! Written by collaboration experts Thomas Duff and Marie Scott, this book provides insight into using Lotus Sametime that is just as relevant for beginnings as it is for advanced users. With a writing style that uses plenty of real-world scenarios, an abundance of screenshots, and precise instructions this book leaves little room for improvement and will more than satisfy any Lotus Sametime user's needs.
Chapter one starts at the beginning by providing an explanation of instant messaging and how Sametime can be used for instant messaging in the business environment.
Chapter two focuses on the embedded Sametime client in Lotus Notes. Logging in, preferences, status icons, adding contacts, and starting a chat are explained.
Chapter three moves on to discuss the stand-alone Sametime Connect client. Installing the client is covered for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. The text then moves on to cover the client's preferences, logging in to a Sametime server, and the often overlooked but very useful Sametime Connect plug-ins.
Chapter four is all about Sametime contacts. How to add them, remove them, import and export them, how to group them and sort them, as well as managing your own online presence, privacy, and finally how to conduct a group chat.
Chapter five moves on to slightly more advanced chatting topics that most users will not use everyday, but will want to know how to use. Topics covered include rich-text (bold, italics, and colors), displaying time/date stamps, chat history, spell-check, and sending files to other Sametime users. Also covered is how to send announcements, use the screen capture tool, audio and video chat functions, and a brief overview of Office, Outlook, and SharePoint integration.
Chapter six describes how to connect to other Sametime communities as well as connecting to AOL, Google, and Yahoo instant messaging services.
Chapter seven, available for free from Packt Publishing, switches gears to discuss using Sametime from iNotes (DWA). Many of the previously discussed features (logging in, starting a chat, managing contacts) are covered again but this time specifically for the web client.
Chapter eight moves on the Sametime for mobile devices. A detailed explanation of how to install Sametime Mobile is covered, as well as logging in, chatting, preferences, managing contacts, etc.
Chapter nine and ten depart from the chat basics of the different clients and now moves into using Sametime for meetings. Chapter nine covers how to login to the Meeting Center, chat with meeting participants, chair and participate in a meeting, as well as meeting features such as polls and group chats. Chapter ten explains screen-sharing, whiteboard, video and audio, and meeting best practices.
Chapters eleven and twelve cover more advanced topics including chat rooms, broadcast communities, setting geographic location, and Sametime Unified Telephony.
The book include three appendices. Appendix A covers new features in Sametime 8.5 and 8.5.1. Appendix B discusses chat-aware applications, and Appendix C lists Sametime resources that can be found on the web (including a link to the Sametime Song -- who knew?).
