(More customer reviews)I bought this book to learn about fundraising, and it sure was worth it. There's a huge amount of information packed into this book. Chapters break all this information down into easy to understand components. The first chapter takes you through job searches and applying for a fundraising position, including a lot of helpful interviewing tips. Then chapters on annual funds, special events, and corporate and foundation fundraising cover the tasks and skills needed to succeed in these fundraising jobs. A chapter on major gift fundraising and planned giving covers the more advanced areas of fundraising, and a chapter on fundraising technology even has information about fundraising on the web.
This book is packed with writing examples to give a fundraiser a start at a writing project. There a lots of letter samples for every stage from seeking gifts to acknowledging them. Also, the author gives sample tracking and reporting forms, so that a fundraiser can keep on track toward a goal, and provide a boss with a record of work and progress.
I felt when I finished the book that I understand fundraising better and the specific things a person needs to do in order to be successful in a fundraising job. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about applying for a job in fundraising. I used this book also to really learn about the day-in and day-out responsibilites of a person working for a non-profit raising money in this hard economic times and what they really have to do to succeed. I have many clients who are non-profits that use our software to track donors and conversations and letters and emails that have been sent to them requesting and thanking them for donations. I really do better appreciate how hard this work is and that helps me focus on the right needs of the users of our software.
