My roommate used this book in her class and asked if I wanted it when I take the class. I looked it over and I am sure it's fine for some, but if you managed to turn your computer on, find the Internet, find amazon, and search for these reviews, then you no longer need this book. I wasn't impressed that the author rated his own book, but at least he gave it 5 stars. I would hate to think of an author giving less than that to his own book.

I'll begin by acknowledging that Nick Holliday is a dear friend. That said, he has written a very informative book outlining the basics of online marketing. If you're looking to gain more referrals via online marketing, you need to read this book. Having built my own website, I thought I would be reading the book with a significant head start on internet marketing. I am happy to say that this was not the case - Nick's ideas were brand new to me, as they will be to most therapists who've had little to no formal training on marketing strategy.
As a licensed psychologist in private practice, I can comment directly on this book's effectiveness at helping build a practice. Prior to reading Nick's book, my website was the only means of online marketing that I utilized (and poorly, as I found out by reading the book). By following the easy-to-read, click-by-click directions, I revamped my site and added several social media outlets to my online presence. The results have been impressive; since following the strategies suggested in the book, I've received nearly 20 new referrals over the last three to four months that came solely from online sources. My site now ranks on the first page of Google searches for several relevant keywords.
Nick writes in a down-to-earth, easily accessible style. In what could be an overwhelming presentation of information, he distills important points and provides resources for learning more in-depth strategies if you're interested.
Most importantly, you can follow the step-by-step instructions in this book (easily completed in a "working weekend") and go to the office on Monday morning knowing that you've taken a huge leap forward in gaining new clients. No one uses the yellow pages anymore - you need an online presence. This book helps you develop an effective one.

The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains Review

The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this short but informative, thought-provoking book, Nicholas Carr presents an argument I've long felt to be true on a humanist level, but supports it with considerable scientific research. In fact, he speaks as a longtime computer enthusiast, one who's come to question what he once wholeheartedly embraced ... and even now, he takes care to distinguish between the beneficial & detrimental aspects of the Internet.
The argument in question?
- Greater access to knowledge is not the same as greater knowledge.
- An ever-increasing plethora of facts & data is not the same as wisdom.
- Breadth of knowledge is not the same as depth of knowledge.
- Multitasking is not the same as complexity.
The studies that Carr presents are troubling, to say the least. From what has been gleaned to date, it's clear that the brain retains a certain amount of plasticity throughout life -- that is, it can be reshaped, and the way that we think can be reshaped, for good or for ill. Thus, if the brain is trained to respond to & take pleasure in the faster pace of the digital world, it is reshaped to favor that approach to experiencing the world as a whole. More, it comes to crave that experience, as the body increasingly craves more of anything it's trained to respond to pleasurably & positively. The more you use a drug, the more you need to sustain even the basic rush.
And where does that leave the mind shaped by deep reading? The mind that immerses itself in the universe of a book, rather than simply looking for a few key phrases & paragraphs? The mind that develops through slow, quiet contemplation, mulling over ideas in their entirety, and growing as a result? The mature mind that ponders possibilities & consequences, rather than simply going with the bright, dazzling, digital flow?
Nowhere, it seems.
Carr makes it clear that the digital world, like any other technology that undeniably makes parts of life so much easier, is here to stay. All the more reason, then, to approach it warily, suspiciously, and limit its use whenever possible, since it is so ubiquitous. "Yes, but," many will say, "everything is moving so fast that we've got to adapt to it, keep up with it!" Not unlike the Red Queen commenting that it takes all of one's energy & speed to simply remain in one place while running. But what sort of life is that? How much depth does it really have?
Because some aspects of life -- often the most meaningful & rewarding aspects -- require time & depth. Yet the digital world constantly makes us break it into discrete, interchangeable bits that hurtle us forward so rapidly & inexorably that we simply don't have time to stop & think. And before we know it, we're unwilling & even unable to think. Not in any way that allows true self-awareness in any real context.
Emerson once said (as aptly quoted by Carr), "Things are in the saddle / And ride mankind." The danger is that we'll not only willingly, even eagerly, wear those saddles, but that we'll come to desire them & buckle them on ever more tightly, until we feel naked without them. And we'll gladly pay anything to keep them there, even as we lose the capacity to wonder why we ever put them on in the first place.
Most highly recommended!

Foundations of Evidence-Based Social Work Practice Review

Foundations of Evidence-Based Social Work Practice

I found this book to be difficult to read in that it is basically a compilation of journal articles on the subject. It has some good information for someone who is new to the concept of evidence-based social work practice, but it wasn't that user friendly.

So Much, So Fast, So Little Time: Coming to Terms with Rapid Change and Its Consequences Review

So Much, So Fast, So Little Time: Coming to Terms with Rapid Change and Its Consequences
Average Reviews:

The enjoyment of reading how the author is watching a beloved ritual in his life slip away at his kitchen table made me want to keep reading this book about change. His morning practice of spreading out some newspapers around his morning breakfast to enjoy some in depth articles about a few of his favorite subjects is now in flux with catching snippets of a subject on TV, or looking over his cell phones text messages or video on his I Pod of last nights baseball game, maybe check a friends blog. It is more about our fingers, as St.Clair notes, moving across techy objects than our minds going into much detail.
I love this book! Researched subject matter on many fronts and well balanced with St. Clair's personal daily walk thru the rapid technology advances we all enjoy to our benefit and convenience - usually. His ride thru the Boston T to work is right on the real experience in real time many know all to well. As well as his description of speed and how we expect a certain speed that a few years ago would of been mind blowing. We expect more speed and speed changes us.
Really recommend this book for everyone. Its helpful in reflection and encouraging in its outlook. Price of book is high- even for the digital but worth it.

Consumerology: The Market Research Myth, the Truth About Consumers, and the Psychology of Shopping Review

Consumerology: The Market Research Myth, the Truth About Consumers, and the Psychology of Shopping
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you let market research dictate your business decisions, consumer behavior expert Philip Graves thinks you're making a big mistake. Market research, he says, can't predict customers' buying decisions because it focuses on the wrong criteria - a conscious-mind, logical thinking process. But consumers almost never make buying decisions like that, although they'll insist they do. Instead, they make choices, quickly and efficiently, with their unconscious minds. Business owners who understand this and who apply Graves's criteria to their research will gain valuable insights into what their customers really think and want. While just about anyone who shops can enjoy this entertaining, informative book, getAbstract believes it will help business owners and marketers - if not to read their customers' minds, then at least to understand them better.

Market research is a myth. Philip Graves, one of the world's leading experts in consumer behaviour, reveals why the findings obtained from most market research are completely unreliable. Whether it is company executives seeking to define their corporate strategy or politicians wanting to understand the electorate, the idea that questions answered on a questionnaire or discussed in a focus group can provide useful insights on which to base business decisions is the cause of product failures, political blunders and wasted billions.Consumer.ology exposes some of the most expensive examples of research-driven thinking clouding judgement, experience and evidence – from New Coke to General Motors, from Mattel to the Millennium Dome – and instances of success through ignoring market research, such as Baileys and Dr Who. It also shows organisations the tools they should be using if they want to understand their customers.Using his unique AFECT approach, a set of five criteria to evaluate the reliability of any consumer insight, Graves asserts that it's time for a fresh approach that embraces this new understanding of human behaviour. Along the way, he reveals why the current practice of market research is a false science, why we often don't buy what we say we will, and how to understand consumers better than they do themselves. After reading Consumer.ology business leaders and politicians will never look at market research in the same way again.
