This book is a complete let down and at best a brochure/advertisement for you to visit their SEO marketing website and employ their services. And the fact there were so many positive reviews makes me cynically think that the authors of this book knew how to game Amazon's website and put up bogus positive reviews. It should be titled "The Hidden Truth: How I Fooled Kindle Users to Pay Double for Info that Could've Gotten Free".
There is not one thing in this book that's a 'Hidden Truth'. Everything in this book I have read for free years ago on 'net. I was really hoping there would be just a few nuggets of advice that would help us improve our rankings. But nada. I could give more meaningful advice on SEO than this author did.
The book is ridiculously short (equivalent of probably 30-40 pages), making you feel even more ripped off that you paid $17 - more than you'd pay for a real and quality book for $9.99 on Amazon.com.
Save your money and do a search on Google for "how to optimize my web page for search engines" or something similar, and get much than what's contained in this book for free and in a few minutes.
NOTE: of all the Reviews you'll see here, I am the ONLY one that's a verified buyer (sucker).

As the owner of a web design firm that offers a growing bundle of SEO services, I have spent thousands of dollars staying up-to-date with the latest strategies for search engine optimization.
But despite the big-name conferences I've attended, this $30 book is the best investment I've made in SEO.
The author does a phenomenal job of covering every phase of the process. In fact, I hit Amazon this evening, because I'm buying 4 more copies that will be distributed to every part of my team... 1 for our lead web programmer, 1 for the people doing keyword research, 1 for our copywriter and 1 for the people who focus on link building strategies. There's stuff in here from which everybody can benefit.
I also appreciate how it's organized. If you like text - there's a section in each chapter with text. If you prefer pictures, the second part of each chapter is chock full of diagrams and images that would allow somebody to learn a lot with minimal reading.
I highly recommend this book.

local online advertising for dummies is a great read cover to cover...the fact i like the most about the book is that it touches upon every aspect of local business marketing from creating a website, to PPC, SEO and more...The book authored by Yodle, in my review fairs a "Good read"....for me the chapters that talk about "social networking" and "PR" were the most helpful, as those are relatively new marketing channels I am trying to better use to attain business goals... In my review, Yodle and this book are "highly recommended".

Professional Search Engine Optimization with PHP: A Developer's Guide to SEO Review

Professional Search Engine Optimization with PHP: A Developer's Guide to SEO
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Creating a website that can be found among all the other sites on the web has always been important to the success of any site. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is as important to the marketing of a website as image optimization is to its graphic design. For dynamic-driven websites such as BellaOnline, it is a continuous challenge to maintain search engine optimization. This book by Jaimie Sirovich and Cristian Darie is written for the PHP programmer who needs to understand the many technical issues involved when programming a search-engine-friendly site from attracting search engine spiders to site promotion. Throughout the book, you will find code examples and practice exercises which show how to implement the techniques covered in the book.
The authors begin with a discussion of the programming environment including setting up the MySQL server and then move on to tools and resources for the IT professional and the basics of search engine optimization. One of the most important aspects of search engine optimization is the URL. The URLs that you generate for your pages must not only be search engine friendly but also people friendly. The authors discuss how to make the task of creating and managing search-engine-friendly URLs easier. Another problem you will encounter is duplicate content which will harm your site's search engine rating. The authors discuss many ways to prevent or minimize this problem such as using robots.txt and meta exclusion.
Your site visitors enjoy those cool looking interactive features, such as fancy menus, that can be created using JavaScript, Ajax and Flash. These same features make it difficult for search engines to find your site. However, web readers have come to expect a certain amount of interactivity and without at least a few of these goodies, your site will be bland by today's standards. The authors discuss this problem and cover several ways to help such as generating SEO images and the use of graphic text.
One of the most popular ways to promote a website is with RSS feeds and syndication. To be effective, these feeds must be updated as new content is added to your site. This can be time consuming especially if your site is updated several times a minute. Two answers to this problem offered by the authors are to automate the generation of RSS feeds with a PHP class and displaying feeds with SimplePie.
A standard for a good search engine friendly site is a good sitemap system. As with RSS feeds, keeping a sitemap updated can be a challenge and the authors show you how to create a traditional and an XML-based sitemap. Once your site is live, your job as an IT professional has just begun. There are many SEO technical issues the authors touch on including maintaining your site, changing hosts and cross linking.
One thing that makes a technical-heavy book like this more helpful is a working example that incorporates what you have learned. The case study for this book is an E-commerce store and catalog. The authors have also covered how to enhance a pre-existing site to be more search engine friendly and how to create a search engine optimized blog using WordPress.
Jaimie Sirovich is a search engine marketing consultant, programmer and administrator for the search engine marketing blog SEOEgghead. Cristian Darie is a software engineer and author of several books and tutorials on AJAX, ASP.NET, PHP and SQL. [...]

Maybe you're a great programmer or IT professional, but marketing isn't your thing. Or perhaps you're a tech-savvy search engine marketer who wants a peek under the hood of a search engine optimized web site. Search engine marketing is a field where technology and marketing are both critical and interdependent, because small changes in the implementation of a web site can make you or break you in search engine rankings. Furthermore, the fusion of technology and marketing know-how can create web site features that attract more visitors.
The mission of this book is to help web developers create web sites that rank well with the major search engines, and to teach search engine marketers how to use technology to their advantage. We assert that neither marketing nor IT can exist in a vacuum, and it is essential that they not see themselves as opposing forces in an organization. They must work together. This book aims to educate both sides in that regard.

Search Engine Advertising: Buying Your Way to the Top to Increase Sales (2nd Edition) Review

Search Engine Advertising: Buying Your Way to the Top to Increase Sales (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Catherine Seda's excellent book "Search Engine Advertising" is the perfect complement to Shari Thurow's "Search Engine Visibility" from which includes an excerpt toward the end. Where Thurow's book, the best one in terms of accomplishing high rankins in 'organic' (read unpaid) search results, Seda's book brings along the whole other side of the equation: that of paid options to accomplish high rankings. In doing so, one of her key points is that Search Engine Advertising doesn't end when the customer arrives at your site (visits), but it really is about conversions (getting the customer to make a purchase, subscribe or whatever your web site's purpose is when s/he arrives to it).
The book is very well structured around six parts:
i) Planning: the key (yet sometimes overlooked) part of the process, to ensure you know who you are targetting and how, before jumping into the paid options.
ii) Paid Placement Programs: she presents the differences (pros and cons) of the most important fixed placement and pay-for-placement programs available.
iii) Paid Inclusion Programs: directories are presented here in all their splendor, along with what you can do to enhance your possibilities before submitting your site, and how to manage a large number of simultaneous submissions. Web site optimization is touched upon briefly at this point, but in no way substituting Thurow's book on the topic: you simply have to have both, if you're serious about Online Marketing at all.
iv) Specialized Search Engines: comparison shopping engines, vertical market search engines and international search engines are discussed in some detail, to get you started with them.
v) Tracking ROI: normally just as overlooked as the planning stage, the tracking of the results of paid advertising campaigns are discussed in extensive detail to ensure that you are able to steer the boat in the right direction if your ROI data shows that you're putting money on the wrong key terms, your copy is not doing what it should to engage customers, or your landing pages are not taking customers where you want them to go once they get to your site.
vi) Protecting profits: topics such as click fraud, trademark infringement and affilate networks are discussed, as things to keep an eye on.
All in all, this is not a book you'd want to sit down and read in one afternoon (nor would you be able to). This is a hands-on book to work through and use as a reference as you're getting your feet wet with this whole other animal that is paid advertising on the Web. It has done a ton for me in the two months I've been applying the concepts contained in it, since it summarizes very well all the options available to you, their pros/cons and how to best take advantage of them, considering your size and budget. I highly recommend it without reserves for eMarketers that have not had too much exposure to paid options, as well as those who have some experience in the area, since it provides a wealth of tips and insights that most people in the field can benefit from.
Disclosure: I received a copy for review from the publisher.

With the ever-increasing attention paid to the search engine space, it pays to know how best to design your web site and plan your marketing campaigns to optimize this resource. A recent book I received fills that space nicely... Search Engine Marking, Inc. - Driving Search Traffic to Your Company's Web Site by Mike Moran and Bill Hunt.
Content:
Part 1 - The Basics of Search Marketing: Why Search Marketing Is Important... And Difficult; How Search Engines Work; How Search Marketing Works; How Searchers Work
Part 2 - Develop Your Search Marketing Program: Identify Your Web Site's Goals; Measure Your Web Site's Success; Measure Your Search Marketing Success; Define Your Search Marketing Strategy; Sell Your Search Marketing Proposal
Part 3 - Execute Your Search Marketing Program: Get Your Site Indexed; Choose Your Target Keywords; Optimize Your Content; Attract Links To Your Site; Optimize Your Paid Search Program; Make Search Marketing Operational; What's Next?
Glossary; Index
First off, this book is really well done. Using a writing style that's more conversational and readable than I expected from the cover, they go into solid detail about everything related to search engines. This includes how they work, what people are looking for when they search, and how best to understand the types of visitors you'll get in order to turn them into potential customers. They also spend plenty of time telling you what to avoid in the way of spammy and sleazy tricks to get better rankings (which will probably also get you banned from the engines). As a result, you can read the information with confidence that you're being useful and ethical information related to improving your visibility on the web.
While most any size business could benefit from this information, I kept thinking of larger organizations during my reading. Marketing Communication (MarCom) departments, at least those who understand the web, absolutely need to know this information and formalize their organizational approach to search engine optimization. A single person business looking to advertise on the web, especially if this is their first foray into the cyberworld, might find themselves a bit overwhelmed by over 500 pages of information. Conversely, a MarCom department would have the time and resources to commit to a focused and planned approach to their search engine results. Both businesses would benefit, but I think the larger companies would benefit more...
Regardless of your organizational size and structure, it's worth the read. You'll come away with a much more complete understanding of how you need to position yourself to get noticed in the increasingly crowded world of search...

Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Marketing: An Hour a Day
Average Reviews:

I have known and followed David for a number of years. I have always admired his level of understanding for AdWords - both on the search and the display network.
When I read his book, I was impressed by the step by step walk through of all the little things that you do (or need to do) immediately after launching an AdWords campaign. I don't believe I've ever seen anyone list all those details and steps in one place.
A few of my favorite sections:
I highly recommend the section on defining personas under the researching keywords section.
Designing effective landing pages is thorough, solid.
It was refreshing to see the chapters on how to migrate your campaign into Yahoo and Bing because training and information on PPC strategies around those search engines is very hard to find.

I've spent well over half a million dollars of my own money on AdWords and know a thing or two about what works and what doesn't. Trust me, this book has everything you need to know about using AdWords. I like the way the book is organized, with each aspect of AdWords explained in clear understandable language. A lot of guides and instructional books I've read use language that is too complex, or instructions that just don't make sense in the 'real world'. Brad Geddes is well known in the pay per click (PPC) world as THE guy who knows what he's talking about. I've followed Brad's advice via blogs and when he's spoken at various internet marketing seminars for the past three years, and wished I'd known about him sooner. If you're just starting out as an AdWords advertiser, or you're already a seasoned veteran, this book should definitely be part of your marketing plan. Andy :-)

(More customer reviews)
Although overall a book with a lot of tips, the author does not explain things as well as she could. For instant, she starts talking about Google Trends and doesn't tell us where to find it online (I guess there's Google for that ;). That said, there are a lot of good gems she shares. Here are some:
-Searchers click on organic results 85% of the time
-Companies connect with searches in two ways: Paid and Organic
-Longer search queries = fewer paid results appearing to the searcher
-Videos and images draw users away from the paid search column
-50% of searchers will see the 7th search result
-100% of searchers look at the first organic result; 50% look at the first paid result
-Increased organic results = increased brand awareness
-organic results last over time, whereas paid results stop the second you stop paying for them
-Searchers click on a brand 92% of the time when a brand is in both paid and organic results
-A search is on avg. three words long; nearly 25% are only one word
-Women are more deliberate in reading search results
-A #1 ranking is less important than people think. If you rank in the top 3 to 4 results and have a more compelling title and description, you may own the click
-Searchers don't even look at the entire title. They look at the left half of it
-Remember that every page of your site is a potential entry for visitors
-The days of normal search results that everyone sees the same are now over
-YouTube is the second largest search engine
-Results that contain both video and images, searches start with that first, then go above, and then below in their scan

Search has changed everything. Search has become woven into our everyday lives, and permeates offline as well as online activities.
Every business should have a search strategy. How a business appears online can impact consumer influence as much as if not more than offline advertising like TV commercials. A business's search strategy can have a dramatic impact on how consumers interact with that business.
But even more importantly, search engine activity provides amazingly useful data about customer behavior, needs, and motivations. Accessing search data is like conducting focus groups with millions of people for free. Search isn't just for marketers and techies. It can provide valuable insight on business strategy and product strategy.
Companies of all sizes – from startups to global enterprise level corporations, and even businesses without web sites – can benefit from understanding how consumers are searching for them and talking about them online, both as a powerful acquisition channel and a vast repository of market research.
In this non-technical book forexecutives, business owners, marketers, and product managers, search engine strategy guru Vanessa Fox-who created Google's portal for site owners, Googgle Webmaster Central -explains what every marketer or business owner needs to understand about how search rankings work, how to use search to better understand your customers and attract new ones, how to develop a comprehensive search strategy for your business, and how to build execution of this strategy into the businesses processes. This isn't another book about paid search for advertisers. This book focuses on organic listings – the unpaid results that receive 86% of searcher clicks.
Written by search engine guru Vanessa Fox, formerly Google's search engine strategy spokesperson and creator of Google Webmaster Central
Explains from a businessperson's perspective how to develop a successful search engine strategy
Shows how to use the easily accessible data from search engines to increase qualified traffic, better understand customers, and strengthen customer relationships
Reveals how smaller companies can leverage search engine marketing to achieve parity with larger brands

With this book in hand, every businessperson will have the knowledge and the tools to maximize the potential of search engine marketing to build a brand, draw new prospects, and generate sales.

Google Advertising Tools: Cashing in with Adsense, Adwords, and the Google APIs
Average Reviews:

Harold Davis has not necessarily broken new ground with his "Google Advertising Tools" book. Yet, he's managed to put together a volume that summarizes effectively the basics of SEO and how to structure your site to maximize return on investment as a lead into Google Advertising at large. Starting with Google AdSense (placing Google Ads in your site), he works his way into AdWords (buying pay-per-click keyword-based ads) to wrap the book up with a detail discussion about the APIs offered by Google if developing tools to maximize your overall use of Google's interface and options is up your alley.
If you are new to the field of SEO, this is a nice introduction. If you are experienced with the ins and outs of pay-per-click campaigns or optimizing your site for Search Engines to crawl through it, you are still bound to find a few new useful elements. In any case, I highly recommend it as a comprehensive and current reference on marketing your site through Google.

When it comes to advertising on the web, you just can't argue with the numbers. A $7 billion market today is expected to grow to $18.9 billion by 2010. Jupiter Research also estimates that search advertising will be a larger share of the market than display advertising by 2010. These phenomenal numbers are due largely to Google, which has changed the way the world publishes content - and advertises.

Google Advertising Tools from O'Reilly examines the business and technology behind making money with content and advertising on the web. This focused, easy-to-read guide shows you how to use Google's advertising services to make it happen. You'll find all the background information you need to work with Google AdSense, which automatically delivers text and image ads that are precisely targeted to your site, and Google AdWords, which lets you generate text ads that accompany specific search term results.

This book has specific and detailed sections on:

Turning your web site into a profit center with AdSense
Making sense of AdSense metrics
Driving traffic to your site
Optimizing sites for search engine placement
Working with AdWords campaigns, auctions, and reports
Managing campaigns dynamically using the AdWords APIs

Once you've read all four parts, you'll have a comprehensive picture of how advertising works on the web and how you can use the Google advertising programs to your advantage.

Search Engine Optimization: SEO Secrets For 2011 Review

Search Engine Optimization: SEO Secrets For 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others have pointed out, the author is clearly not a professional author and there are plenty of spelling and grammar errors in this book. But that's not the main reason this book is not worth buying.
The problem is that this book isn't worthwhile for anyone. There isn't anything valuable in this book for an SEO expert, and this book is a little too complicated for a beginner. Yes, when reading this book it might sound like a beginner could use this book to do SEO. But there are strategies in this book that aren't completely explained, and other strategies where steps are skipped. So when you actually sit down and try to implement the author's suggestions, often you won't be able to do it.
The author also makes a number of incorrect or confusing statements. For example, he treats AOL as a separate search engine from Google, when in fact Google actually runs AOL's search engine. The author also is obsessed with the keywords metatag, mentioning it as something important at least a half dozen times. But the keywords metatag hasn't been used by search engines for several years now. You would think that a book updated for "2011" would know that. It's also surprising that a "2011" book would have a list of old, outdated search engines on the back cover, such as Excite, Exactseek, LookSmart, Lycos, Netscape, whatUseek and SearchHippo. When is the last time you used one of those search engines? The author has clearly been using the internet for many, many years, but just because the author remembers using those search engines back in the 1990's doesn't mean you need to try and rank in those search engines today. Nobody uses them anymore.
As an example of a good title tag, the author gives one of the longest most convoluted examples of a title tag I've even seen. A title tag is the most important thing on the page for SEO and the title tag should focus on just one keyword or short phrase per page. But his example of a good title tag is four different phrases all squished together.
The most bizarre recommendation is that in the middle of the chapter on submitting to Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines in order for you to get ranked on those search engines, the author says to submit your website to Google Analytics in order to show up higher in the search engines. Ummm, no, that's not what Google Analytics is for. Google Analytics tracks visitors AFTER they arrive on your site. Google Analytics has zero to do with getting more visitors or ranking higher in a search engine.
Another big omission is that this book doesn't mention internal link structure even once, when in fact linking pages on your site to other pages on your site is one of the most important things you can do for SEO.
There are many free SEO tools available on the internet, but the author mentions almost none of them. For example, there are plenty of online tools that will tell you how many times a word appears on each page of your site. You typically want your main word to appear 3 - 5% of the time on the page. But instead of recommending one of those free tools, the author says to paste the page content into Microsoft Word, and use Word to count the number of total words on the page, and then count the number of times that particular word you are interested in appears on the page, and then use a calculator to figure out the percentage of times that word appears on that page. Then do that for each page on your site. Wow. Talk about tedious. Here's a tip. Save yourself a lot of time. Do a search for keyword density checker. Any keyword density checker you use (they all work the same way) will figure out keyword density on your website automatically in less than a second.
Since this book won't teach anything to an SEO expert, and isn't anywhere near one of the best SEO books for beginners, the only thing I can think of is that the author is deliberately trying to confuse beginners into getting frustrated with SEO and contact him for help instead. He conveniently gives many examples throughout the book of all the wonderful things he has done for his clients. And of course the final chapter is how to choose a professional SEO expert, with his email address prominently mentioned.
If you are a beginner who is completely clueless about SEO and you just want to learn the basics, I recommend "Get to Number #1 on Google in Easy Steps" by Ben Norman. It's very simple and easy to understand. If you are a beginner who wants a book that starts off easy and gradually works it's way up to more complex SEO topics I recommend "Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day" by Jennifer Grappone.

The ABC of SEO Review

The ABC of SEO
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The "ABC of SEO" is an alphabetic tour through the often obscure world and language of Search Engine Optimization and Marketing. All the important SEO subjects including competition analysis, keywords, links and page ranking algorithms are well and clearly covered. Although the A-Z format sounds dry the book is easy to read from cover to cover. The author provides many interesting anecdotes and asides and has an engaging writing style.
The "ABC of SEO" scores highly by pointing out both good and bad practices and is an ideal read for anyone thinking of hiring an outside optimization firm or who wants to put in place a methodology for a team working on websites. It would also be of great use to any web author or blogger wishing to optimize their own site.
The book does not assume any knowledge about search engine marketing beyond basic concepts of the Web and HTML. An ideal book for anyone wanting to better promote their website.
