Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility: Stakeholders in a Global Environment
Average Reviews:

This book presents a stakeholder perspective for understanding the big picture of corporate social responsibility (CSR). These stakeholders are grouped as follows:
organizational (employees, managers, stockholders, unions);
economic (e.g., customers, creditors); and
societal (e.g., communities, government and regulators, the environment).
The book examines the scope of CSR, and views it through the lens of the needs and values of stakeholders. It puts forth the arguments against CSR.
CSR is examined in a strategic context, placing the subject in sharp focus from a business perspective. The authors examine a long list of issues that define CSR in practice, each associated with a specific stakeholder group, using a real-life case study with supporting sources. Vivid examples of CSR strategies in action are provided.
The book is a treasure trove of information and insights. It is comprehensive, and extremely well organized-an outstanding book in every respect. For anyone interested corporate social responsibility, this book is must-reading.

The New Entrepreneurial Leader: Developing Leaders Who Shape Social and Economic Opportunity (Bk Business) Review

The New Entrepreneurial Leader: Developing Leaders Who Shape Social and Economic Opportunity (Bk Business)
Average Reviews:

A fascinating look at the mind and worldview of the "new" entrepreneur. The book lays out three key principles of entrepreneurial leadership based on years of research and the expertise of business school professors who give lively, first-hand accounts of training MBA students at Babson College, the top business school for entrepreneurship in the country. Especially interesting is the idea of "cognitive ambidexterity" which posits the necessity of using both analytical reasoning and experiential, action-based learning. In other words, a leader must be able to shift from logic to creativity and back again to succeed in the business climate of the future. As an educator myself, I was heartened by the stated mission of the authors who believe that the next generation of managers must be inculcated with values that go beyond creating profit to embrace concepts like "maximizing the common good and minimizing social injustice and environmental impact." Filled with colorful detail and stories from the trenches of real entrepreneurship at work, the book is a must-read for anyone interested in leadership, education, or social justice.

In years past, the keywords for leaders were confidence, single-minded purpose, and strategic planning. But today's vastly complex, globalized, and fast-evolving world requires a different kind of leadership. This game-changing book details a new approach—entrepreneurial leadership—developed at Babson College, the number-one school for entrepreneurship in the world.

Entrepreneurial leadership is inspired by, but is separate from, entrepreneurship. It is a leadership approach that can be applied in any organizational situation, not just start-ups. Based on two years of extensive research, it embraces three principles that add up to nothing less than a fundamentally new worldview of business and a new logic of decision making.

The authors discovered that rapid change and increasing uncertainty require leaders to be "cognitively ambidextrous," able to shift between traditional "prediction logic" (choosing actions based on analysis of known trends) and "creation logic" (taking action despite considerable unknowns). Guiding this different way of thinking and acting is a different worldview of business and society, where simultaneous creation of social, environmental, and economic value is the order of the day. Entrepreneurial leaders also leverage their understanding of themselves and their social context to guide effective action.

Praise for The New Entrepreneurial Leader

"The Babson team cracked the code on global entrepreneurial leadership for the 21st century. Their three principles—cognitive ambidexterity, responsibility and sustainability, and self- and social awareness—are the bedrock for winning on the competitive global playing field of tomorrow. A conceptually sound and very practical guidebook for leadership success." —Noel Tichy, Professor and Director, Global Citizenship Initiative, University of Michigan, and coauthor of Judgment (with Warren Bennis)

"Helps us understand the imperative for developing leaders who create both economic and social value. Importantly, this book offers a blueprint for how educators across the curriculum can prepare students to have the vision and ability required to achieve integrated value." —Nancy McGaw, Deputy Director, Business and Society Program, Aspen Institute

"Precisely what our turbulent and uncertain environment requires: a new leader with good self-knowledge and passion, able to reconcile the apparent contradictions (in the yin-and-yang tradition of the Chinese) brought by complexity. The model will be a source of inspiration, and action, for all those concerned about leadership today." —Henri-Claude de Bettignies, Emeritus Professor of Leadership and Responsibility, INSEAD, and Emeritus Professor of Global Responsible Leadership, CEIBS

"Working with Babson College, we've seen how its entrepreneurial approach to management education can unlock the growth and job-creation potential of small businesses across the United States. The New Entrepreneurial Leader is a must-read for anyone who is interested in positioning American students and businesses owners as the cornerstones of this country's economic recovery." —Dina Powell, Global Head of Corporate Engagement and President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation, Goldman Sachs Group

"As business schools reconsider their point of arrival and their future destinations, The New Entrepreneurial Leader provides a vocabulary and conceptual road map for those institutions that consider entrepreneurship and innovation as the way forward. The book both provides a toolbox and shows the power of a core focus on entrepreneurship in developing a distinctive educational program that has implications for all business schools." —Rakesh Khurana, Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development, Harvard Business School, and author of From Higher Aims to Hired Hands

"This book is an exemplar of the new wave of thinking about how to develop the next generation of entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers for the 21st century. The discussion is framed by tractable concepts and is grounded in practical application. You will gain a valuable perspective on what matters and how to deliver transformational learning to students." —Robert F. Bruner, Dean and Charles C. Abbott Professor of Business Administration, Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, and author of Deals from Hell "In a world overwhelmed with problems, we desperately need more entrepreneurial problem solvers—whether that's young people starting companies from scratch or change agents inside big companies launching breakthrough initiatives. This remarkable book showcases the newest thinking from Babson College, one of the world's most-admired centers of entrepreneurial education, about two timeless questions: what makes entrepreneurs special, and what are the most effective ways to teach aspiring entrepreneurs to succeed? The best education doesn't just tell you what you need to know; it changes how you think. This powerful book does just that." —William C. Taylor, cofounder and Founding Editor, Fast Company, and author of Practically Radical "In The New Entrepreneurial Leader, Babson extends its own leadership in management education. Indeed, this book effectively argues that 21st-century management requires entrepreneurial leadership. Larger companies should require this book for every executive." —Stephen Spinelli, President, Philadelphia University, and cofounder, Jiffy Lube International "More than thirty years ago, Babson College was the first institution to teach entrepreneurship as a discipline, and once again, with the publication of The Entrepreneurial Leader, Babson has demonstrated that it is an innovator in management education. This is a thought-provoking book that provides very practical insights on ways to teach future entrepreneurs how to think and act more critically and analytically, strive for greater self- and social awareness, and achieve outstanding results." —William D. Green, Chairman, Accenture "This book provides a vision for developing leaders who aspire to create social, environmental, and economic value simultaneously. It offers practical advice on how to transform management education to realize this vision." —Liz C. Maw, Executive Director, NetImpact "This is a book that was long overdue...the chapters that discuss the challenges of defining metrics for CSR and the difficulty of linking CSR to corporate social performance (CSP) have the potential to impact the content of our business curriculum." —Dr. Norean Sharpe, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs, McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University

"Reinvention is essential and must be done with guts and in a vigorous manner. In The New Entrepreneurial Leader, you will find a viable approach to reinvent management education. This book is a must-read for all who run, teach in, or plan to attend a business school." —Kevin C. Desouza, Associate Professor and Director, Institute for Innovation in Information Management, University of Washington, and author of Intrapreneurship "This book builds on Babson's thirty years of pioneering researching and teaching entrepreneurship. It challenges conventional business education by arguing convincingly that the entrepreneurial mindset is key to success in our incredibly complex world—not just for entrepreneurs but also for managers, whether they operate in businesses or nonprofit organizations, in highly advanced or in emerging economies. It is a must-buy book." —Guy Pfeffermann, CEO and Chairman of the Board, Global Business School Network

Sustainable and Resilient Communities: A Comprehensive Action Plan for Towns, Cities, and Regions (Wiley Series in Sustainable Design) Review

Sustainable and Resilient Communities: A Comprehensive Action Plan for Towns, Cities, and Regions (Wiley Series in Sustainable Design)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having embarked on a sustainability plan without the aid or foresight of any type of guidebook or comprehensive strategy, I am extremely supportive of the effort that author Stephen Coyle has undertaken in compiling Sustainable and Resilient Communities. This book should be the "Read Me!" document for anyone looking to engage in sustainability planning efforts from a government or community perspective. It's not the first book that I've read on how to engage in sustainability efforts (honestly such titles are beginning to become "a dime a dozen"), but it is the first book that focuses on how to create an action plan to make a community more sustainable (rather than simply focusing on successful efforts in other areas). Coyle manages to provide realistic strategies that can easily be worked into the political context of almost any community without crossing into the fringe of developing technologies or antiquated reductionist themes.
Sustainable and Resilient Communities is broken down into 13 chapters which address the various facets of sustainability. The chapters are:
1.The Built Environments and Its Supporting Systems
2.The Process of Transformation
3.The Physical Built Environment
4.The Regulatory Environment
5.Transportation
6.Energy
7.Water
8.Natural Environment
9.Food Production/Agriculture
10.Solid Waste
11.Economics
12.Engagement and Education
13.Public Health
The first two chapters provide a solid assessment of the sustainability planning process and offer a prescriptive framework for how it can be implemented within a community. Chapter 2 also provides a robust breakdown of the process showing how to assemble potential stakeholders, how to effectively use those stakeholders, how to gain support from a broad segment of the community, and how to successfully implement a sustainability plan. The remaining chapters break down each of the specialty topics and provide case studies that demonstrate how the topics were successfully tackled.
Sustainable and Resilient Communities is a 404 page manual on how to create a sustainability plan. This is the manual that you should pass around your organization or civic group to learn how to manage the process and how to build support. I found it to be well-written and filled with a wealth of information. Coyle has done a superb job of assembling a group of experts well-versed in the subject matter presented. It doesn't take a singular or rigid approach to building a sustainability plan but instead shows how communities can create objectives that meet the needs of their citizens.
I found the book to be well illustrated with rational and relevant examples. The graphics and detailed examples from municipalities around the country are extremely useful in brainstorming approaches. The graphics are also appropriately placed to make the topics at hand more cogent. The book opens with a Foreword from Andrés Duany and continues with poignant articles by renowned experts in their respective fields.
If you're interested in sustainability plans or sustainability action plans or just creating sustainability indicators for your organization this book is an excellent place to start. It's targeted to those involved with government organization, but it's a good tool in the hands of a community activists or civic group. It would also be an excellent manual for organizations looking to approach sustainability internally.

The ultimate step-by-step action plan guidebook for making communities resilient, resourceful, and healthy

Many of today's communities face an unprecedented struggle to adapt and maintain their environmental, economic, and social well-being in an era beleaguered by fiscal constraints, uncertainty about energy prices and supplies, rapid demographic shifts, and accelerated climate impacts. This step-by-step guidebook for urban planners and urban designers explains how to create and implement an actionable plan for making neighborhoods, communities, and regions more environmentally healthy, resource-conserving, and economically resilient. Sustainable and Resilient Communities delineates measures for repairing, retrofitting, and transforming our built environments and supporting systems-transportation, energy, water, natural environment, food production, solid waste, and economics-through:

Methods for assessing a community's key sustainability quotient

Deploying tools for establishing timely performance goals and metrics

Developing strategies for evaluating, selecting, and implementing 'high-leverage' interventions

Activating policies, codes, programs, plans, and practices, as well as monitoring and upgrading their performance

The book includes a range of targeted case studies, from New Orleans and South Carolina to Arizona and California, illustrating geographically diverse approaches for urban contexts large and small.
A resource for developing an ecological urbanism, Sustainable and Resilient Communities employs time-proven, broadly applicable strategies and actions that can be customized for specific environmental, energy, and economic conditions.

Recycle Everything: Why We Must, How We Can Review

Recycle Everything: Why We Must, How We Can
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I confess my excitement about this book because it goes much further than any to date in its prescription for long-term sustainability. This book covers an area of sustainability that has not been addressed by many, with the exception of Cradle to Cradle, in that it distinguishes sustainability from delayed resource depletion. Recycle Everything is unique however, because it is a play book that defines the systems, processes, roles and challenges to be met to achieve long-term sustainability. I believe this book is a must-read for anyone interested in sustainability and green business practices.
Recycle Everything throws down the gauntlet on the current unsustainable production system that supplies all the goods to the economy. This system consumes resources until they are exhausted and for this reason cannot be sustainable. The book asserts that efforts such as life cycle assessment and similar methods only delay the inevitable, an economic decline. The book goes on to illustrate and provide examples of a cyclical system that retains within itself all the materials used in production. The cyclical system is called a "system for material sustainability", which circulates goods or their constituent materials among several roles including the manufacturer, consumer, disassembler, materials re-processor and others. The system is a closed system that eliminates extraction of new materials and their subsequent disposal.
The book is predicated on the notion that, for the manufacturing industry, resource depletion is a more urgent motivation to become sustainable than protection of the environment. The author discusses reasons to be concerned about approaching material scarcity and recommends closer scrutiny of the materials used in production and the issues related to their availability. The book redefines sustainability as the "ability to continue human production and consumption indefinitely within the limitations of a finite Earth." The intent of the book is to make sustainability "operational" through its "systems for material sustainability".
Although the book focuses mainly on inorganic materials (e.g., metals, glass, plastics), organic materials (e.g., cotton, wood) used in such things as clothing, some kinds of furnishings and food waste are also accounted for. Organic materials pass through a phase of composting and return to field and forest to replenish the soil for the cultivation of more organic products. All of the systems, both organic and inorganic, are illustrated in the book.
The book raises the issue that the inorganic materials are created for a single use and due to their chemical composition, cannot be reused to make new products. These single-use materials must be replaced by materials that are "perpetually reusable," a term coined in the book. These new materials would be recovered and reused to manufacture new products, into the distant future. It remains to be seen whether this is achievable simply because all materials decay; however, it may be possible to reconstitute them in some way and return them to production. The author leaves these issues to research and development and to this end, she has begun an institute dedicated to engaging scientists in resolving them.
This book describes the processes used in the new sustainable systems in enough detail that those in manufacturing and related industries can actually apply them. There are no doubt issues that will emerge with the plan offered in this book however, I share the author's confidence in human ingenuity and believe that the issues can be resolved. This book offers real, practicable hope for sustainability and I highly recommend it.

Can everything be recycled? Yes, but it's going to take imagination and innovation. Right now, we are taking what we want from the planet, using it, and throwing it away. It's a one-way street from resource to landfill. But if we think there can't be any other way, we are lacking imagination. Once a thing can be imagined, it can be engineered. The one-way street is not sustainable long-term. For this reason, we need to go beyond current methods that merely slow down the rate of consumption and reduce the amount of materials flowing through the system. We need a new system, a cyclical system because by its very nature, sustainability is cyclical. This book describes such a system. The system for material sustainability is a concept whereby materials move through production, consumption, and recovery in a never-ending cycle. The materials in the system are 100% recyclable. This system has no dependence on extraction of raw materials nor does it allow used materials to be discarded. Impossible? This book will show you how it can be done. It elaborates on the system, explains how it works and describes the areas of innovation that are needed to make it a reality. Written by an instructional design professional with a master's degree in Engineering and Technology Management and 10 years of experience working with manufacturing professionals from design to the factory floor. Burned out by all the polemics and grand policy posturing on the subject, I was taken very much by surprise by "Addicted to Energy". I'm unaware of anything else as straightforward and practical-minded--yet comprehensive-- as this. I'm at least as motivated by the economic and national security motivations for saving energy, as by the global warming motivation, but either way Elton Sherwin's recipe is compelling.

How to Live Well Without Owning a Car: Save Money, Breathe Easier, and Get More Mileage Out of Life Review

How to Live Well Without Owning a Car: Save Money, Breathe Easier, and Get More Mileage Out of Life

First off, I am NOT car-free. I'll admit that up front. But I would LIKE to be and this book has convinced me that I'd save a TON of money if I were able to reduce or eliminate my dependence on our car.
The author saved about 40K or more in 4 years of living without a car. To say he did not EVER USE a car, however, would not be totally true. He bumped up against reality sometime and had to rent a car on occasion...but mostly he made do by bicycling, walking or using public transportation or taxis.
"Wait", you might say, "Take a taxi? Aren't they expensive?" Not as part of an overall plan that allows one to stop paying for auto insurance, car maintenance, buying a car, etc.
The author makes a convincing argument and I have cut down on my use of our auto as a result, walking as much as possible. I'd do away with it forever if we had reliable public transportation and if our kids weren't involved in activities that were out of the public transportation loop, sometimes out of the city.
But I still have hope of living "car free" and I am aiming for a life where using our car isn't necessary, in a town with good public transportation and mild winters...someday. In the meantime, this book has given me a road map (pun intended) for a simpler, less auto-dependent lifestyle.

Climate Capitalism: Capitalism in the Age of Climate Change

This book is great in the sense that you don't have to rely on institutions of science, or the voices of sensationalized media in order to realize climate change is a reality. By showing that major corporations like Walmart and Apple, among many, many others, are actively engaged with sustainability and situating themselves with a competitive advantage for the future and simultaneously bolstering profits. While many modern industries remain skeptical of the cries of the coastal nations' leaders, the UN, president Obama, and the countless accredited universities that climate change is real and demands action now, others are planning to profit from it. No longer does the "green revolution" consist of tree huggers and hippies, its an inevitability and capitalists are no longer sitting on the sidelines they're situating themselves to make their fortunes. While Hunter Lovins's book Natural Capitalism (which she wrote with 4 other economists) was a NY Times best seller, this book is an even easier read, FILLED with academic citations, and give the reader insight into to trends the economy has, and is rapidly undergoing, in respect to this green revolution.
