Professional Augmented Reality Browsers for Smartphones: Programming for junaio, Layar and Wikitude (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)There can be no reasonable argument against the contention that the primary growth market in software development is going to be that for handhelds/smartphones. Even long-term IT people that have experienced dramatic increases in computing power are extremely impressed by the enormous increases in capability that has taken place in handheld devices.
Augmented Reality (AR) is used to refer to the practice of inserting enhancing features into the content that appears on a smartphone. It can be as simple as a section of popup text similar to a dialog balloon in comics or as complex as an embedded video. The other content is still the primary point of interest, as the name implies the additional content augments rather than replaces it.
As the subtitle implies, the user receives instruction in programming for junaio, Layar and Wikitude, stepped through the process from basic access to the web sites to how to view and debug the finished product. When needed, the reader is pointed to useful additional tools such as language-specific text editors. Keyhole Markup Language (KML), which is similar to XML, is used to describe the data with no primer. Therefore, some knowledge of XML is necessary to understand the KML code.
Segments of code in PHP that carry out the appropriate action are included as well as the needed SQL source code, written for the inexpensive MySQL database. While some background knowledge would certainly be helpful, experienced programmers unfamiliar with PHP will understand the code by making some effort, although the SQL will require more thought if you are unfamiliar with how such code is written.
Programmers have to constantly be looking to upgrade their skills, learning new languages, programming tactics and how to target new platforms. This book is an excellent primer into the hottest and most dynamic of the current platforms.
