While the CharityChannel professional community consists of thousands of well-experienced, top-of-their-game fund development experts, it is also home to colleagues just entering the sector.
I suppose I am one of the grizzled veterans who has fantacized for years about writing a little handbook covering the essentials of fundraising. It would be my way of giving back to my less-experienced colleagues.
It would be a fast read. A couple or three hours, max. Okay, may four if a nice breeze came up while sunning myself in the back yard and I slipped the surly bonds of earth for a few moments of snooze. Not that the book would be a snooze. It's just that I live in Southern California and that's what we do here. Snooze in the back yard. In summer or the middle of winter. But now I'm just bragging.
Each succinct, no-nonsense chapter would cover just what is needed. No fat. Just the facts, ma'am.
It would be so clear that even a board member could understand it. Staff members who are new to fund development could sneak a peek too, as long as no one actually saw them. Maybe it could ship in a plain brown wrapper.
Darn it. I no longer fantasize about writing this little book. It's just been written, and by none other than CharityChannel veteran member Linda Lysakowski, ACFRE, and Michael A. Sand.
The little book is The Essential Nonprofit Fundraising Handbook. I recommend it for anyone who serves on a nonprofit board. It would also be a good starting point for any staff member who is involved in creating or expanding a fund development program.
The handbook is 224 fast-reading pages. Here are the chapters:

Chapter 1: Planning for Fundraising
Chapter 2: The Role of the Board
Chapter 3: The Role of the Staff
Chapter 4: Involving Volunteers

Chapter 12: Fundraising Dinners

Are there not enough hours in the day to raise the money your agency needs? Do your colleagues not have the expertise or interest to generate the needed dollars? Do you need a quick source of practical information about ways to raise funds? Then you need The Essential Nonprofit Fundraising Handbook. This book is for individuals who are dedicated to helping their communities but who need useful recommendations on how to raise money. Written by two of America's foremost fundraising experts, you will learn how to: * Develop a clear, efficient fundraising plan. * Ask for contributions from individuals. * Target businesses, foundations, and government agencies. * Hold special events. * Conduct a Capital Campaign. * And lots more! How many times has a well-meaning board member suggested that you do a golf tournament (gala dinner dance, art auction, walkathon) because the Girl Scouts (local hospital, Rotarians, PBA) scored big with theirs--only no one has any experience with such an event? With The Essential Nonprofit Fundraising Handbook, you'll learn exactly what to do, step by step, to pull off a successful event of any kind or size, or to raise badly needed funds in a wide variety of other ways.
