A blog or weblog is a great way to get started on the web and Blogger.com from Google is one of the most popular software for creating weblogs. In her book, Elizabeth Castro assumes that this may be your first web project as she walks you through the basics for creating a blog at Blogger.com.
First, she gives you an overview of Blogger.com, what the software does, and why she chose it as the subject for her book. After she introduces you to the Blogger Dashboard (the control panel where all the work is done), Castro shows you how to open a Blogger account, give your weblog a name and choose a template. The template does all the work for you when creating your weblog pages. All you need is the content that you want to publish and the template places everything in the correct spot on the webpage. Castro does a great job explaining all of this with step-by-step instructions and lots of illustrations.
Once you have posted your first weblog entry, Castro moves on to more advanced Blogger features such as working with the template tags to customize the look of your blog, how to control the members and comments features, how to post an entry by email and how to use Audioblogger to post an entry via the telephone.
Now that you have your weblog ready for the public, Castro discusses hosting your blog through Blogger's BlogSpot hosting or on your own server. Finally, she shows the many ways to publicize your blog including email and site feeds.
Elizabeth Castro has written many other Visual QuickStart Guide books for Peachpit Press.

Internet Marketing for Architects: Advertising and Promoting Your Architectural Firm Online Using Google, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Search Engine ... Click-by-Click Guide Book for an Architect

I work for a small architect firm that has offices in the tri-state area. My Supervisor recently asked me to find new areas to promote our services given that the economy has hit our area rather hard, especially for new construction. My first thought was the social networking sites, especially Facebook, and when I told him that he was a little hesitant but told me I could look into it and let him know what I found. He was MOST concerned with getting on Google's first search results page and that is what we are working towards especially.
I was shocked there actually existed a BOOK telling us exactly how to go about it. But sure enough, Internet Marketing for Architects was superb in relating various ways we could increase our buisness, even locally, using search engines as well as the social networking sites. We have began two campaigns, both on Facebook and YouTube, and ARE seeing success already. Even though I knew that businesses were using social networks for some pomotion and even though I knew we needed to, I sure had no idea how to go about it. I am thrilled that Mr. Holliday compiled this guide. His click-by-click steps make things extremely easy. We are going to try Google Places next using his techniques although we are fairly pleased at Facebook already. Sure, social media might not ever be our primary means of promotion but we are pleased so far at its payback compared to the little time we have invested there. And as we move up on Google, we really hope to see returns.

SEO Made Simple (Second Edition): Strategies For Dominating The World's Largest Search Engine Review

SEO Made Simple (Second Edition): Strategies For Dominating The World's Largest Search Engine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think it's time that someone gives this book something other than a five star review which, in my opinion, it doesn't merit. Toward that end, here's my take:
Judging from the content of the many laudatory reviews, this book's primary audience is among people who are amateurs or noobies in the field of website design and functionality. If your experience in designing a webpage is limited to a WYSIWYG editor, if you don't understand XHTML, you're not sure what tag, element, attribute or "meta" mean, then this book is probably appropriate to your level of knowledge.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with being inexperienced. Everybody has to start at the beginning. However, if you are an experienced website designer who, hopefully, hand-codes your pages in XHTML and CSS, makes an effort to comply with current standards for the separation of structure and presentation, and are making more than a formal bow to the need for accessibility, then there is likely to be little of interest to you in this book.
To be fair, there are certainly many good pieces of advice here, despite the author using the first 20% of the ~100 pages to toot his own horn. However, there is little information that could not be found by spending a couple of hours searching the internet for SEO topics; i.e., almost all of what the author "reveals" is rather common knowledge. Again, in the interest of fairness, the author readily admits that he is not a code expert. As a result, there are very few useful examples of actual HTML markup code. The snippets that do exist would be old news to a real developer but, occurring without the context of a real document, would be of little use to a novice designer. The glossary at the end of the book, which takes up about 10% of an already suspiciously short volume, is the last place I would turn for a cogent definition of many of the terms he includes; e.g., "Cascading style sheets (CSS) - used to manipulate and easily manage the design of a website." Hmmm...perhaps that definition could be improved and expanded a bit for the next edition.
As an ex-professional printer (many years ago), I was disappointed with the design and typography of this book. Besides coming across with too much similarity to the "Get Rich Quick with Real Estate Foreclosures" and "Dr. X's New Wonder Diet" genre, the book is poorly edited (too many typos) and composed in a sans-serif typeface (alright, I admit to being biased against that), making it difficult to read for long lengths of time. Also, many of the screen capture illustrations are so small that I needed a magnifying class to read them. I applaud the quite-readable choice of a large point-size for the body type, but that also helps pad out to about 100 sparse pages what should have probably been nothing more than a pamphlet half that size.
To his credit, the author seems to have adhered to the pre-eminent rule of the medical profession: "First of all, DO NO HARM!" His advice is all good, if not exhaustive, and there is certainly something here for any newcomer to website functionality. He also does a good job of steering the reader away from the "black hat" techniques that may have been effective in the not too distant past. Kudos to him for that. But, in contrast to the many other reviews declaring this book as the be-all and end-all of SEO advice, I beg to differ. There are other books on the subject as good, or better, than this one. Given the short length, the sub-standard physical design and production, the pretty well known nature of most of the advice given, I suggest it is over-priced; a price more like $7.95 would come closer to the real value of this tome.
However, if you are a noobie who is being pressured by some self-proclaimed SEO expert, who is promising to get you on Google's first page for the mere sum of $695, then buying and reading this book at its current price may very well be a real money-saving bargain! Bottom-line: it's not a BAD book; it's just not that GOOD! Caveat emptor!

The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue Review

The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue
Average Reviews:

I've been reading social media marketing books for about a year, and most of them over-promise and under-deliver. This one is different. For the first time, I feel like I "get" it.
It's filled with no-nonsense, practical tips that actually work instead of pie-in-the-sky talk about what social media "can" do.
I started reading the ebook on an airplane, and wasn't quite done when the plane landed -- so I made my husband drive, so I could finish it. If you'd ever ridden with my husband, you'd know that meant I just didn't want to stop reading.
If you want a step-by-step guide to what to do -- and what to avoid -- this is the book for you. I've been a marketer for a long time, so I have some habits to unlearn according to this author. She explained why in a way I can understand, so I might actually follow her advice.

ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income Review

ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked upProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income after blogging for a litle over two years. I've been doing it as a hobby because I love writing and photography, but admittedly haven't thought much about monetizing it.
For me, this book served as a good introduction to how to make money from blogging, both directly and indirectly. However, its focus is a little more broad. It coves everything from choosing a topic to write about, to setting up your blog, to making money. It mixes information and examples with exercises that challenge the reader to apply what they are talking about and use it to inform their own blog.
Because of its broad focus, I think it would be the most useful to someone who is brand new to blogging. I still found it very informative as someone who has been blogging for awhile. However, I did find myself skimming through the pages on setting up your blog because mine has long been set up. However, I thought their instructions were very straight foward and clear and definitely would have been helpful to me if I had stumbled upon them when first starting my blog. They also provide some great tips on deciding what to write about and choosing a domain name.
The content specific to monitization is good but should really be used as a primer. As others have mentioned, much of this content can be found on the ProBlogger blog or elsewhere on the internet. However, the beauty of this book is that it is condensed and all available in one place. No reason to go digging. That said, it is really just the tip of the iceberg so if you are looking for one book to cover everything you will wind up disapointed. I still don't believe I know everything about monitization, nor did I expect to when reading this, and expect to still read more on SEO as a follow up. There are also no secret, magic strategies here. If you are looking for a get rich quick solution this is not it.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and it met my expectations. It was a great first read on how to monetize my blog, but I'm still planning on reading other resources to continue to get smart.
