The Art of Contrarian Trading: How to Profit from Crowd Behavior in the Financial Markets (Wiley Trading) Review

The Art of Contrarian Trading: How to Profit from Crowd Behavior in the Financial Markets (Wiley Trading)

Back in 1990 I read an article in the July/Aug issue of the Commodity Traders Consumer Report(CTCR)that forever turned my trading mindset around. Carl Futia wrote the article. And no, I don't personally know Mr. Futia, and I have no interests financial or otherwise in his world. But in my 25 years of trading, I can honestly say that this article helped to shape my trading mindset forever. To make a long story short, I'll quote and explain to you the two concepts from that 1990 article that engendered the changes in my trading mind.
Concept #1: Quote: "I had seen clearly that if I relied on oscillators and trend-following techniques, I was always getting into the trend too late. It struck me that I should try to "Anticipate" the beginning of trends rather than waiting to enter in the middle after they had started".
Concept #2: This concept was the idea of "Free Exposure" which Mr. Futia was taught from a seminar by the legendary trader Peter J. Steidlmayer. In essence Free Exposure meant; To enter the market where the risk is the least and the reward is the greatest, one must find, and be able to read where "Value" lies in the market. All entries made at "Value" are essentially tantamount to a "Free" ride in the market, with very little risk "Exposure".
These two concepts started me on my mental journey into what I now call "Anticipating Value" in the market. In any case, back then, after doing months of research and extensive reading on these two concepts my trading was completely turned around for the better. Today, both concepts have melded in one technique, and now form the foundational element of my trading strategy and methodology. Further, since reading this new book, I can see that most of his ideas have since matured into a cohesive philosophy, worthy of anyone's personal library. And by the way, my personal library once numbered over 800 books, so I believe I know a good one when I see it.
Thankfully, I too arrived at some of those same conclusions in his book a long time ago. This is because they were the natural and logical progression from his initial concepts in the 90's. Do yourself a favor and at least read this book, even though you may not agree with it now. Some time in the future, after you have been "sorely tested" in the market for a while, you may be truly thankful that you did. It might just spark a new way of looking at the market for you.

Why is it so hard to beat the market? How can you avoid getting caught in bubbles and crashes? You will find the answers in Carl Futia's new book, The Art of Contrarian Trading. This book will teach you Futia's novel method of contrarian trading from the ground up.
In 16 chapters filled with facts and many historical examples Futia explains the principles and practice of contrarian trading. Discover the Edge which separates winning speculators from the losers. Find out how to apply the No Free Lunch principle to identify profitable trading methods. Learn about the wisdom and the follies of investment crowds – and how crowds are formed by information cascades that drive stock prices too high or too low relative to fair value. Discover the power of your Media Diary - and how to use it to spot these information cascades, measure the strength of the crowd's beliefs, and decide when the crowd's view is about to be proven wrong.
You will watch Futia apply these principles of contrarian trading to navigate safely and profitably through the last 26 tumultuous years of roller coaster swings in the U.S. stock market – a time during which Futia kept his own media diary and developed his Grand Strategy of Contrarian Trading. See how this Grand Strategy worked during the Great Bull Market of 1982-2000. Watch the Contrarian Rebalancing technique in practice during the dot.com crash of 2000-2002. Find out when the Aggressive Contrarian Trader bought and sold during the bull market of 2002-2007. Read about the causes of the Panic of 2008 and ups and downs of contrarian trading during that dangerous time.
Futia shows you how the market turning points during the 1982-2008 period were foreshadowed by magazine covers and newspaper headlines that astonishingly and consistently encouraged investors to do the wrong thing at the wrong time. By monitoring crowd beliefs revealed by news media headlines – and with the guidance provided by the many historical examples Futia provides – a trader or investor will be well-equipped to anticipate and profit from market turning points.

Investing Online For Dummies Review

Investing Online For Dummies

The author starts out by building confidence in investing on-line. His eleven Getting Started points (Decide how much you can save and invest, Master the terms, Understand the difference between being an active and passive investor, etc.) set the tone for the entire book. He assumes you have never invested on-line and then shows you exactly how to do it. Not only does he explain how to invest at your computer but he also explains basic terminology (selling stock short, buying a call in options, shareholders' equity, etc.) so that you are never lost in his explanations. Thankfully, he reserves the deeper topics (Capital-gain distribution nightmare, stock splits, etc.) for the gray sidebars. The hundreds of internet addresses he provides are enough to fill anyone's bookmarks. This is the kind of book you read with your laptop so that you can check out the references and bookmark those which have meaning to you.

Nicely written with a good sense of humor, I trust the writer must be making more money selling the book and many other things than in the stock market. I wa not very impressed, nevertheless pulled out a few good recommendations.

In this revealing new book, top trader Robbie Burns cuts through the jargon to give you the lowdown on the strategies you need to make money from share dealing.Robbie, aka the Naked Trader, is an expert and highly entertaining guide to the sometimes baffling world of the stock market. In between cups of tea, rounds of toast and the occasional 'cuddle' with Mrs Naked Trader, he describes the straightforward techniques that have enabled him to succeed in the markets and escape the rat race. The book kicks off with the basics such as: the best websites, magazines and newspapers to look at; the kit you need to get cracking; and some key tips for choosing a broker. Robbie then gives you the essential techniques for picking the good shares and, just as importantly, avoiding the bad ones, and finishes up with some more advanced topics like how to make money even when shares fall. Along the way you also get the chance to spend a day with the Naked Trader with an exclusive extract from his private (and revealing) diary.Throughout, everything is explained in plain (sometimes too plain! - Ed) English and with a sense of humour, honesty and enthusiasm rarely found in books about money. Not afraid to bare his soul (among other things) the Naked Trader even reveals some of the painful mistakes that he has made in the markets to help make sure that you do not fall into the same traps. There may not be any guaranteed short cuts to trading success (as an important Naked Trader rule states - 'If it sounds too good to be true it probably is'), but this book gives you everything that you need to learn to trade successfully, and perhaps even escape the 9 to 5 slog like the Naked Trader has.Packed withpractical advice and delivered in a down-to-earth style, this book is all you need to get started. Ahead of the Curve: Nine Simple Ways to Create Wealth by Spotting Stock Trends Review

Ahead of the Curve: Nine Simple Ways to Create Wealth by Spotting Stock Trends
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book reads as if someone looked over the past few years of stock prices, picked a few stocks that went up significantly in price, then made up stories to explain why she invested in them. The endless tales of stock market success could not possibly be true. Well, they might be, but there would have to be an almost equal supply of purchases that did not fare so well. Nobody could have the batting average this woman implies.
Basically, she explains, over and over again, how she caught wind of a trend (brilliantly ignoring all the fads and looking only at real trends), found a stock that could profit from the trend, bought it low, then sold it high. Presto! Easy as that. She even demonstrates a worksheet that takes us into her thought process. She writes "lower interest rates," then makes deductions from there on the impacts to various industries, such as housing and mortgage finance companies and makers of home fixtures. Incredibly, her ability to predict what stocks will benefit from low interest rates includes companies that sell all manner of home renovation equipment, but she presciently manages to exclude the giant home reno stores like Home Depot and Lowe's (which of course have not performed well over the past few years).
There is simply no way anyone could have made as many brilliant forecasts as this woman claims (at least not without making a commensurate number of not-so-brilliant forecasts). While her concept of looking for trends and trying to logically deduce the extent of the trend and any secondary and tertiary effects is a great idea, all the difficulties inherent in doing such analysis is completely ignored.

The most important edge you can develop in becoming a smart investor is knowing how to spot an emerging trend before the pundits are advertising it and everyone jumps on board. As global investment specialist and popular AOL Finance Editor and Money Coach Hilary Kramer knows, picking the stocks that are hot today doesn't give you that edge -- it just makes you part of the pack. Instead you need to learn how to get ahead of the curve, discovering the trends that will lead you to the best up-and-coming companies well before others are on to them. You don't need elaborate calculations or a degree in finance to discover great investment opportunities. As Kramer reveals in this fascinating and indispensable book, the clues are all around you, hiding in plain sight -- you just have to learn the secrets of spotting them as you go about your everyday life. Offering a wealth of specific examples from her own wildly successful investing career, Kramer divulges the remarkably effective techniques she uses to spot trends: nine powerful yet simple methods for discovering trend indicators all around you. Who would have thought that, in the days of the Atkins diet anti-carb craze, a company called Panera Bread -- now a booming chain -- would be a great investment? Hilary Kramer knew it would be. How did she know, way ahead of the crowd, that Embraer, an aircraft manufacturer located in Brazil, of all places, was becoming a market leader and had great growth potential? She knew how to spot the trend. As she shows, if you follow her simple methods, you, too, will be able to: • Identify reliable market trends early • Spot other, secondary, trends that will be sparked by more obvious trends • Discover the clues in everyday life that will lead you to great growth companies • Evaluate which companies among the competition are the best investments • Recognize when a trend is peaking and it's time to sell Armed with her time-tested techniques, your own eyes and ears become your most reliable and powerful resources for market-beating wealth creation, not only today but for the rest of your life.

Payback Time: Making Big Money Is the Best Revenge Review

Payback Time: Making Big Money Is the Best Revenge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read Rule # 1 back when it first came out and I thought it was excellent. I'm about halfway done with Payback Time and so far 90% of the information is simply rehashed information from his first book. The one thing that appears to have changed is that MSN now apparently gives 10 year data for free, which was not available when Rule # 1 came out (back then you had to pay a third-party company to obtain 10-year data about a stock and MSN and Yahoo only offered 5-year data if I remember correctly). So if you haven't read either book and are wondering which one to pick up I would say go for the second one (Payback Time). If you've read Rule # 1, reading the second book certainly won't hurt for repetition sake, just don't expect any major new information. The concept of stockpiling is nothing revolutionary. Simply buy more shares when the price goes down. Wow. The one thing I did not like about Payback Time is how Phil is constantly directing the reader back to his website for every little piece of extra information. And he doesn't tell you what link on his site to click on for each piece of information so you end up randomly clicking on his site until you find what you're looking for (not to mention the fact that you have to register in order to use the site in the first place and it keeps on logging you out every few minutes for some reason).
Having said that, I still have to give credit to Phil for his clear writing style. He has a special ability to take complex information and making it understandable to the average person. I also like the fact that he gives his email address in the book and encourages readers to contact him with any questions. I like that type of service. I will update this review as soon as I'm done reading the book.
3/16/10: As a side note, I also have noticed, like others, that many of the raving reviews for this book sound fake (some almost sound like an infomercial) and are from users who have only reviewed a single item (i.e. this book).
4/1/10: In chapter 5, "Eight Baby Steps to Wealth", Phil walks you through a tool on MSN's website called "Deluxe (stock) Screener" (also known as "Supercharge your search"). It's supposed to be a free stock screener that lets you find companies that match Phil's criteria for great companies (saves you a ton of time). Unfortunately, this tool no longer exists (MSN retired it back in November of '09!). However, Phil recently posted an entry on his blog saying that you can find the exact same information on google's website. If you go to "Google Finance" look for Stock Screener. It's supposed to be just as good as MSN's Deluxe Screener. I will be playing around with this tool and will post an update soon.
5/26: Remember how I said that Phil gives out his email address in his book and encourages readers to ask him questions? Well, I sent him a question (regarding the use of Google Finance - see my post from 4/1) in late March all I got was an automated reply saying that someone would get back to me and no one ever did. So much for that. So if you have any questions, I would call the number listed on Phil's website. They will answer your questions.

Don't get mad, get even… Phil Town's first book, the #1 New York Times bestseller Rule #1, was a guide to stock trading for people who believe they lack the knowledge to trade. But because many people aren't ready to go from mutual funds directly into trading without understanding investing—for the long term – he created Payback Time. Too often, people see long-term investing as "mutual fund contributing" – otherwise known as "long-term hoping." But the sad truth is that mutual fund investors are, to a stunning degree, pinning their hopes on an institution that is hopeless. It turns out that only 4% of fund managers consistently beat the S&P 500 index over the long term, which means that 96% of fund investors see a smaller return on their nest egg than a chimpanzee who simply buys stocks in the 500 biggest companies in America and watches what happens. But it's worse than that. The net effect of hitching your wagon to mutual funds is that over a lifetime they'll fritter away as much 60% of your nest egg in fees. Once you understand how funds engineer this, you'll rush to invest on your own. Payback Time's risk-free approach is called "stockpiling" and it's how billionaires get rich in bad markets. It's a set of rules for investing (not trading but investing) in the right businesses at the right time -- rules that will ensure you make the big money.
