iPhone App Development: The Missing Manual Review

iPhone App Development: The Missing Manual
Average Reviews:

I've been looking to get into iPhone OS development this spring, and most books I've come across have fallen into one of two categories:
1) they expect you to have a background in Mac OS X's Objective-C development frameworks or...
2) they're written like a reference book and thus make it difficult to learn the ropes in a step-by-step fashion.
Craig Hockenberry's iPhone App Development: The Missing Manual changes that frustrating pattern. By introducing the world of developing an iPhone app in a way that requires just a bit of programming experience, Hockenberry makes instantly accessible the Objective-C language, the XCode IDE, and the design processes that go into taking your app from notepad sketch to App Store success and beyond. The text is clear and approachable, and Craig's jolly writing style makes grasping important concepts and following along with examples both fun and memorable.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with any C-like programming experience who is interested in writing apps for the iPhone OS.

Mobile Marketing: Finding Your Customers No Matter Where They Are Review

Mobile Marketing: Finding Your Customers No Matter Where They Are
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a marketer for over twenty years, keeping up with all of the technological marketing medium opportunities that have emerged and continue to evolve isn't as easy as it once was. Well-focused, detailed and informative books on a specific growing opportunity, written by an expert, definitely help. This one delivers well on this front. Here's the more specific upsides and potential downsides I see, depending on your expertise and needs.
KEY UPSIDES:
- It's a thorough and well-organized in-depth look across the spectrum of mobile marketing.
There isn't anything I can think of this book should have included that it didn't. It starts with a history and overview of the strengths and complexities of Mobile Marketing and a detailed look at how to target and track your MM audience.
Throughout the book there are great case studies. After looking into each of the different approaches that one might take with their mobile marketing efforts. It goes on to explore the international MM landscape and privacy/spam issues. There's also an appendix of supplier resources, text symbols and a glossary of frequently used terms.
- It's a practical, tactical "how to guide" too.
For each type of potential mobile marketing campaign - including advertising, promotions, application creation, e-commerce, search engine optimization and integrating it with mass media- you'll get a break down of the various mobile marketing tactics available, considerations to help you decide if that kind of effort is right for your business needs, and the best practices, instructions and resources to help you make it happen.
- You recieve free access to the on-line version of the book, w/ purchase of the hard copy.
It's a good reference that's only a click away.
POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES:
- It's not going to be current for long.
One of the great things about this book is that it includes recent research and has added things like a chapter specifically dedicated to iPhone marketing - not included in many other books. But, w/ the recent launch of the iPad - there's already a new chapter waiting to be made. Some of the more specific info is just going to get outdated extremely quickly.
- It'll be easier to understand and more useful to marketers who are already fairly savvy on Internet Marketing and have worked with larger scale campaigns.
Mobile marketing opportunities, to a great extent, parallel Internet marketing ones. So, in many cases the book is highlighting the differences between the two, and it can and does get very technical. MM is also very resource intensive. This makes it more difficult currently for smaller organizations to use as efficiently - and the book really focuses on larger scale initiatives.
BOTTOM LINE: A well-written, thorough and practical guide, as well as reference book. For as long as it remains current, I highly recommend it to marketers that want a greater understanding of the potential Mobile Marketing opportunities available to their brands.

I really didn't like this book, because I was looking for a book on mobile marketing. I already have a background in marketing in general, so this book really didn't do anything for me. The ONLY reason I didn't give it a 1 star was because it's a pretty good marketing primer, but I wouldn't recommend it for that, as there are better ones out there...but I won't get into that.
Anyways, save your money or get one of the other books on the subject, this one is a pass.

Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript Review

Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had bought an iPad when they were first announced. I had the expressed intention of creating some very specific apps; I did not need Wired Magazine to tell me that mobile apps are the future.
My plans were delayed by Apple's delay in releasing a new iPad OS. I didn't want to waste a lot of time struggling with things in the original OS that might become easier in the next.
I'd rather not struggle at all. As I have gotten older, the thrill of twisting C and C++ to my will is far less alluring than it used to be. Honestly, there is no allure left at all: I saw learning the Apple API as an onerous but necessary task. I was not looking forward to it.
Then this book arrived and opened my eyes. Yes, there is that "Android" in the title, but this is really about building device agnostic apps and I saw that long before the author off handedly mentioned iPhones in Chapter 7. Yeah, baby - if you think I was reluctant to learn Apple API's, well, that's nothing compared to how I feel about futzing around with Java to drive Android stuff. No thank you. But CSS and Javascript? That's different.
Not that I still don't have a learning curve. I have done very little with CSS or Javascript because of browser quirks. I realized that Jquery could smooth a lot of that out for me, but I just did not have enough of a need to invest any time learning that either. Mobile apps provides that incentive.
This book opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities I was just not aware of. For example, I did not know about the Web SQL Database abilities in HTML5. The author said that rocked his world; well, it rocked mine also.
I am looking forward to sitting down and playing with the ideas this book has exposed me to. This really changes my plans, and this is one case where I am very happy to veer off course. Jquery, here I come!
