This is as good a place as any to quickly, but thoroughly familiarize yourself with tools used to improve Google page rank via SEO. There are a lot sites covered here - close to 70 in all, each of which includes a star ranking (5-star scale) and a brief review. Best of all, other than a couple of exceptions, all are free.
The sites are organized into 8 major categories, which align with the format of author's online webinars. This makes it easy for webinar participants to find the tools needed to complete the analysis covered in detail during the webinars.
A wide range of sites offering SEO tools and services is included, though tools offered by Google, due to their sheer number, are covered in a separate section. Beyond the tools in this section, it's important to note a host of Google-specific training, blogs, guides, and help are included which extend beyond SEO to related topics like AdWords, Google Places, and Google Merchant/Product Search.

Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit, Vol. 2 Review

Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit, Vol. 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Penetration testing is definitely a recommended security discipline that helps you find real vulnerabilities and security wholes before the adversary does. This book is a reference guide of the different penetration testing stages and considerations, covering a wide range of technologies and tools. It is just focused on open-source and freely available tools, and do not include any commercial counterparts, like Core Impact or the specialized Web application testing suites. Perhaps this is a good addition for a future edition without the "open-source" term on its title.
The wide scope of the book is one of the reasons why it is not extremely cutting-edge and does not go into the deep details required to master each topic covered. I completely understand it is not possible to create such a book (at least with less than 9999 pages), covering a wide range of topics and including in-depth details. Overall, this book is a good reference guide (in fact one of the few generic references) that will open the door for more advanced knowledge from other books focused on specific areas, such as wireless, Web applications, databases, etc.
Something that can be quickly appreciated is the involvement of multiple authors, as the quality and look and feel of chapters varies. I specially liked the first two chapters, focused on Recon, Enumeration and Scanning. Even if you're an experience pen-tester, I've been doing penetration tests since 2000, you can easily identify the positive SensePost influence on these chapters, and the section contains valuable tips and tricks. At some extent, the "you always have something new to learn" principle applies here.
The book is really good emphasizing best practices and suggestions from a professional pen-testing perspective. When running tests over production environments, there are lots of considerations to need to have in mind, beyond the pure attack techniques. The book does an excellent work on this area, and this is also ratified by the final chapter detailing how to build your own pen-testing lab, including common political and technical issues (I can confirm I've seen lots of them in real world situations). Once you run pen-tests frequently, you need to customize and build your own scripts and tool set. The book also emphasizes this by explaining how to customize the Backtrack CD with your own additions. Definitely, it is a good approach as Backtrack is the reference pen-testing Linux Live CD distribution nowadays.
At first sight, the book structure is a bit strange and it seems there is a lot of repetition on each and every chapter, but once you get used to it, I think is a great approach. Each chapter introduces the goals and scope, then covers the technologies (or pen-testing phases) analyzed, plus the hacking techniques and vulnerabilities involved, and after that it focuses on the tools required to implement the attacks and how to use them, with practical and detailed examples.
It is crucial to differentiate between the techniques and foundations, and the tools, as multiple tools can be used for the same attack, sometimes you do not even need any hacking tool, and new tools will come in the future. I recommend you to master the techniques, the attack principles, and understand the vulnerabilities, and from there, select the best tool on each case. All this structure is complemented with a final case studies subsection on each chapter that exemplifies real-world situations where the techniques and tools can be applied, and how.
The databases, wireless and network devices hacking chapters are good. They provide some insight in the methodology, hacking tools and techniques available for these type of targets. The database hacking focuses on MS SQL Server and Oracle, for sure the most common DB's available out there. The wireless section mainly focuses on WiFi, and Bluetooth is barely mentioned; not enough. And finally, the network devices chapter is a must, as these systems are typically forgotten, although they manage all the network traffic and are a critical IT component of any organization.
In particular, I didn't like too much the Web application chapter. Although it contains lots of tools references, the structure and methodology presented is not very clear, and there is a kind of mix of tools to perform different tasks. Because Web application pen-testing is one of the cutting-edge areas we are dealing with today, I'd have liked to see more quality and in-depth material on it.
From my point of view, the forensic chapter is not related at all with the book and I would completely remove it. There are other very good forensic books available, so I guess it has been included because the tools and infrastructure for basic forensic analysis is available on Backtrack.
Instead, I would have liked to see more details, practical examples, and resources about vulnerable testing environments, such as the DVL (Damn Vulnerable Linux) distro, WebGoat, the Foundstone hackme suites; just to name a few, as well as Capture-the-Flag scenarios and conference references. It would be great to provide an overview on how to build and break into these testing environments using the tools and techniques covered throughout the book.
I strongly recommend this book to people thinking about, or starting on, the penetration testing field. It provides a good and wide overview of topics you need to master, tools available to launch the appropriate attacks, and other pen-testing best practices. As the book is directly aligned with the Backtrack CD, unfortunately version 2 and not the latest version 3 (time for a new edition, including more Bluetooth stuff and adding VoIP hacking ;)), it has a direct and very strong hands-on component, that allows the reader to test the different tools and examples, and makes it very valuable.

Google Web Toolkit Applications Review

Google Web Toolkit Applications

This book is the definitive guide to GWT. I would say you need to have more then a beginner's knowledge of Java (which the authors recommends also) and have some web development experience with the HTTP forms just to appreciate what the author is trying to show you. I can't believe I am saying this because the examples in the books are absolutely top notch, but it would be nice to have more sample little code snippets earlier in the book. There is a ton to digest before you get to Chapter 6 where all the great example code starts. But if you do what I did, and try to put into action at least part of what you have learned from each chapter in your own sample programs you will be better prepared for the later chapters. Otherwise, you get to chapter 6 and you are not sure what hit you. That really is my only complaint, a few easy sample apps after each chapter before you get into the big ones in the middle of the book would be nice. But after you finish this book you will definitely be ready to tackle some major projects and you will at least have some pretty good hands on knowledge of the different methods that you can use in GWT develop rich internet applications.

Google Analytics Review

Google Analytics
Average Reviews:

I had low expectations for this. After all, Google Analytics has very detailed help pages and you can find specific pages for all of the major concepts covered in this book. So what's the point?
Well, maybe there is a point. First of all, someone new to Analytics may prefer the structure of a walk through. But even someone who has been using Analytics from the day they turned it loose in December of 2005 (that's me) can benefit from the specific examples and gotchas detailed here.
For example, I had never thought of tagging links I send out in emails. I don't know why, and it's not that Google's help pages don't mention that. But their page on link tagging is very Adwords oriented, so I missed that you can tag any link. After reading this book, I have even tagged some internal site links so I can easily see if they get used.
I also hadn't thought about tracking outgoing links. Oh, I knew I could, but again I just didn't ever do it. For reasons I can't entirely explain, the section of this book that ytalks about that made me realize that there actually are a few outbound links I would like to track!
The only complaint here is the same complaint I have about far too many books: excruciatingly boring detail in the beginning that far too quickly ramps up to off-hand references without detailed explanation. I do not know why so many technical books exhibit this same pattern, but I suspect it's probably because the basic stuff is easy to detail and the more tech stuff would just get far too complicated. That's fine, I get it, but leave out the detail on the basic stuff. Nobody who is interested in the more complicated subjects needs the detail of the basics!
I do think the book would have a wider audience if it didn't ignore Adsense entirely. The author is probably accustomed to dealing with large sites that don't care much about that, but for many of us little guys, Adsense is an important part of our site income. A bit of attention wouldn't have hurt, I think.
Other than that, this is very good. I picked up some references to tools I did not know about, got some hints that I do not remember noticing in the Analytics Help pages, and have some new ideas percolating in my head.
By the way, this book led me to the author's Analytics Talk blog at [...] I have been enjoying reading that, probably even more than the book.

The Guide To Google Places: Get Your Local Business On The Map and Let Your Prospects Find You Review

The Guide To Google Places: Get Your Local Business On The Map and Let Your Prospects Find You
Average Reviews:

The Internet is vast. In spite of "everybody" using it, the Internet is not always an easy place to advertise smaller, local businesses. Google answered the call to help smaller, local businesses get some attention but we sure never had the time to learn all the ins and outs. We once tried Google AdWords and spent more on clicks than we ever got out of it. (We aren't even sure if ANY of the clicks led to a sale.)
But Google Places changes all that. Now customers can and WILL find us from the Internet. We are anything BUT computer savvy. This book talks respectfully at our low level without talking down to us. In addition, we were shocked that a TRAINING VIDEO is included! A passcode is given early in the book to watch a video showing you exactly how to create your own Google Places and Map listing. That video is Outstanding and worth the price of the book by itself. WHY DON'T OTHER BOOKS DO THIS???
If you rely on Yellow Pages you are just tossing money to the wind. Leverage the power of the Internet, and especially Google, and how to do exactly that is right here. I liked the approach with the author showing us exactly how the playing field has been leveled. It's critical to be found online because that online presence can mean the difference between a customer walking through your door or your competitor's door. And if you think your business is different, EVERYbody thinks that. Your business will benefit from Google Places as much (perhaps more) than others. Plus, people aren't home at a desktop computer and more. They are out and about surfing the Internet constantly on smart phones. "Where do we eat lunch today?" "I don't know, let me see what's close by" (as she looks for a place to eat on her cell phone.
We learned EXACTLY what information we needed to know and supply to get the most hit from Google Places, we learned how to create an optimal Google Places listing, and we saw the costs and benefits of hiring out some or all of our work for others to do. (So far, the guidance in The Guide to Google Places was by far enough for me to manage our online presence myself. At least so far...)
Don't be the business today that advertises where people are NOT (yellow pages, signs outside, etc.) Make your business's ads come TO your potential customers - Google Places will help you do just that, and The Guide to Google Places shows you how. I am a busy person and I don't have time to write lots of reviews all the time (although I do enjoy writing reviews). I thought this book was important enough to tell others about.

With all the technology available today, I get overwhelmed. This book helped me understand what tools are available and how to use these Google tools to my advantage. Without overwhelming me, this book laid out the options in simple, easily readable terms and taught me the basics of what I really need to know to be more productive. Instead of bombarding me with new information, this book focused on teaching me how to make better use of what I already have. For example, it showed me how to be more efficient when checking my email so I don't spend all day sorting through it. The book even offers a "getting started" guide that really helped me put the information to use in my daily life!
