What is Music Production?: a producers guide, the role, the people, the process Review

What is Music Production: a producers guide, the role, the people, the process

This book contains some useful suggestions and reference materials for recorded music producers. Hepworth-Sawyer and Golding both teach courses in music production and freelance as music producers. In this book, they describe some of the roles that producers play and discuss some issues that producers routinely deal with. Topics taken up in the book include analytical listening, business practices, deals and contracts with record labels, stages in a recording project, roles in the recording studio, and mastering formats and codes. A list of recommended readings on music production is included in the appendix.
While the authors are clearly highly informed on their topic, I found the presentation of material in this book a bit frustrating. There is a lot of description of issues that successful, big-time producers must deal with, but very little practical information for interested people who are just starting out. Of the entire text, the short section on analytical listening was the most practical bit of information, but it was never made explicitly clear exactly how this skill would then be put to use for a music producer. In contrast, there is an extended section on general business practices, time management and accounting that isn't specifically relevant for music production. After reading this book, I felt more informed about the variety and level of complexity of skills required for established music producers, but I am still quite confused about what music production entails or how a person might get started in the field.
This book was written by British authors for British readers; while many specifically British references and vocabulary have been adjusted for North American readers, a few oddities remain, such as the term "collection agencies" referring to music licensing companies. In addition, copy editing is sloppy in a few places, such as on p. 110, where there is a bizarre out of context, impossible to understand paragraph "Time management sounds almost cult-like. To many people, they follow their system religiously. In fairness, this is how positive gains manifest themselves. Many producers might read this section and laugh out loud and consider it barmy!" Two pages later, the paragraph is repeated with slight editing and put a little more in the context it was intended, "This all might sound far-fetched. To many people, they follow their system [specific time management software packages just introduced in prior paragraphs] religiously. In fairness, this is how the results manifest themselves: by relying on their system. Given the many people who have adopted these systems, it clearly must work. Many producers might read this section and laugh out loud and consider it barmy." All in all, I found the book slightly informative, but not adequate as an introduction to the field.

Voice Actor's Guide to Recording at Home and On the Road Review

Voice Actor's Guide to Recording at Home and On the Road

I was looking for a book to explain how to record one's voice on a home computer. This very practical, easy-to-understand guide to voice-over recording comes through loud and clear, with excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Best of all, these guys "get" direct-to-computer USB recording, mixing software, the Internet, and other modern technologies, integrating them with timeless recording advice gathered in real careers.
Hogan and Fisher tell you what works, and why what you think might work, won't. Rather than showing off their geek-speak chops, they use regular English and even poke fun at the technical lingo in the process of demystifying it. Other home recording books lavish excessive technical verbiage on how to pad your walls. These guys offer practical solutions (including "move") and even show how to make a portable acoustic foam-lined mic box. You will discover exactly what you need to buy -- although the USB-audio-interfaces section is surprisingly short -- and how to use it. They won't tell you exactly what mic to buy, though, and it's for your own good.
Warning: the jokes are abundant, mostly terrible and distracting, especially the comments from "Prunella," whose parenthetic remarks, although they mercifully trail off, are the editorial equivalent of lip smacks. (The full harshness of this comment will be appreciated upon reading the otherwise excellent text.) Failed humor notwithstanding, the tone ends up being warmly self effacing and encouragingly user-oriented. These guys take seriously the job of helping you, including a strong index and glossary, and plenty of URLs.
Chapter 12, Advanced Production Techniques, is alone worth the price of the book. Embedded in an economically worded step-by-step script for editing recordings are the exact frequencies to manipulate to address problems such as thin sound, dull recording, and sibilance. You end up feeling as though you have two buddies in the recording business; telling you every tip they know, and hammering on mistakes that could ruin your project. Don't let the light tone fool you: this is a seriously great book!

For many years, recording voiceovers was the exclusive domain of commercial studios. Even a simple voice audition meant a trip to a studio, an ad agency, or an agent's office. Today voiceover actors are increasingly producing voice tracks for corporate narration, radio spots, animation, games, and other dialogue projects from their own home studios. Many have learned that to survive in this highly competitive field, they need to learn and master basic home recording production techniques. "The Voice Actor's Guide to Recording at Home and On the Road, Second Edition" shows both aspiring and established voiceover actors how to set up and effectively use their own inexpensive -- but professional-sounding -- personal recording studio to make professional-quality home recordings quickly and easily. Everything is covered to help you get auditions and jobs, from setting up your studio with the right hardware and software, recording at home, and production basics, to promotion, podcasting, and advanced production. This new edition of this bestselling bible for voiceover home recording has been completely updated to cover all the exciting new technology and delivery options currently available.

Absolute Beginner's Guide to Podcasting Review

Absolute Beginner's Guide to Podcasting

This is an eminently readable, straightforward and, dare I say it? entertaining book. Colombo and Franklin cover the territory of what podcasting is, how you (should) get started, pitfalls to avoid, directories that are a must if you ever want anyone to actually listen to what you put out there, and much much more. There are practical suggestions such as "become a voracious consumer of podcasts" at least for a little while before you launch your own podcast into the ether. There are clear instructions, loads of screen shots and--to my great pleasure--a total absence of the analogy laden attempts at "cleverness" that so often accompany technical how-to texts for beginners. I bought it, I'm giving another copy to my tech-savvy son-in-law and I recommend it to you.

Your Cubase Studio Review

The book is great, but you can only read it on a Kindle or Kindle DX. It will not let you use it Kindle for the PC for some unknown reason (which is the only reason I purchased this!). That is a BIG let down. It says "formatted for larger screens like the DX or PC" on the tag even.
Licensing issues like this are one of the reasons I dislike buying ebooks at times.

This is one of those few books about web marketing that doesn't require the Geek Squad to help you become a user of the essence of the book. It is extremely well-written and researched, and gives genuine no-nonsense guidance to those in the music business about how to use the web to promote their artistry in a business environment. I've adopted this book for my use in the college classroom because it's an excellent guide for my students, but it's also a valuable tool for the music professional who wants to use the Internet as a way to compete for the ears of music consumers.

An Independent Artist's Manual Review

An Independent Artist's Manual

I'm not signed to the Blues Farm Records label (far from it) but bought this after meeting Sansietch and discussing aspects of promotion. Reading it, I was impressed. Taking a no-nonsense 'be professional or perish' stance, the manual (and it is a manual) takes would-be artists, be they the lone singer-songwriter or a group of wide-eyed hopefuls, through the steps needed to make their dreams a paying business. It's a must-read before inadvertantly wandering into a morass, and I shall be suggesting it to hopefuls in my circle.
