Harnessing the Power of Intelligence, Counterintelligence & Surprise Events Review

Harnessing the Power of Intelligence, Counterintelligence and Surprise Events

The stories featured in A. P. Martin's Harnessing the Power of Intelligence are fun to read and talk about, at work and at home. I have used some of them to alert my customer-service team about hidden risks and untapped opportunities. We have been applying the ideas of the first six chapters (Part I) for about three months. Our interactions with customers are yielding better results. We are now moving aggressively to prevent tampering with our information assets as noted in the section titled "How Good Organizations Lose Intelligence".
Four of my high-school educated supervisors, who read the book, found Part I a down-to-earth eye-opener, and right on target, for making wiser choices and avoiding costly errors. They, however, thought Part II would be more applicable to middle and senior management. A drawback: the cases in the chapter on Psychographics lack the detail necessary to be useful.
I have also read C. S. Fleisher's Strategic and Competitive Intelligence. Both books represent, in my opinion, two different, credible and complementary approaches to intelligence-based decision-making. Except for some references, there is virtually no duplication of content. A big bonus!

This book covers the organization, leadership, tools, practices and culture of intelligence. It reveals a powerful frameworkcomprising new instruments, platforms and breakthrough concepts toaddress intelligence issues facing professionals and decision-makers,at the national and corporate levels, post September 11. Armed with awide variety of real-life examples and road maps from business, government and the military, the author demonstrates how the frameworkcan be applied to win customers and allies, seize opportunities, anticipate threats, shield assets from adversaries, and gain insightsinto the mindset of stakeholders, by legal and ethical means. Thecontent is based on Harvard University Global System™ managementroad maps pioneered by the author Alain Paul Martin. The failure to act on valuable intelligence is legion. About half ofthe book addresses this issue with new instruments for intelligenceanalysis and interpretation. A full chapter focuses on anticipatingand managing surprise events, and another covers the application ofthe issue-incubation cycle, as an early warning system. Neglectingthis cycle can result in undue risk exposure and flawed decisions. Inaddition, acting on valuable intelligence requires the commitment of ateam, with members playing complementary roles. Otherwise, too manyimportant ideas, intelligent trails and even great goals and missionsare abandoned. The book examines the power, status and role of thecatalysts of intelligence-led change. It also introduces newintelligence tools used to analyze the perceptions and behavior ofconsumers and other stakeholders. The book is suitable for general audiences. Learning aboutintelligence can help each of us make wiser choices, work better andbe a more informed and accountable citizen. Technical terms areexplained thoroughly. Real-life examples about people and importantissues will be fun to read, talk about, both at work and to stimulatediscussions and give your staff or students a primer onintelligence. All in all, this is an excellent, timely and easy to read book withentertaining, vivid examples and breakthrough instruments, most ofwhich are not available elsewhere. As illustrated by the followingtestimonies, this book is highly recommended for managers, professionals, educators and students in business, government and themilitary.

The Perfect Swarm: The Science of Complexity in Everyday Life Review

The Perfect Swarm: The Science of Complexity in Everyday Life

As a glance at the "Look Inside" feature here on Amazon proves, Len Fisher writes a clear, interesting prose, raising important questions and suggesting rules that will help you make better decisions. He describes and applies 33 such rules in this latest contribution to popular science.
His basic thesis is that complex behaviors can be described by a simple rule. For example, gigantic numbers of fish seem to have a single mind -- but all a single fish has to know is to follow the fish immediately in front of it. Watching through your faceplate at gigantic schools of fish as they weave through the water -- you can see this rule in action in beautiful living color.
You can apply the same approach in trying to find a bargain, an approach that works best where there are many sellers and the products are fairly similar to each other.
The basic idea is "to estimate how many samples of the item might be available in total, and then look at a limited selection of these before choosing the next one that is at least as good (in terms of price and quality) as the best of those that we have so far seen. This procedure saves time and effort, and also reduces the possibility that we will spot a bargain, keep looking for a better one, decide on the original one, and go back only to find that it has been sold!"
Fisher explains the use of statistics in three scenarios:
"If we are going for the very best, we should look at one-third of all those available before going on to select the next one that is as good or better than the best that we have already seen (in terms of the lowest price for the same quality). This gives us a 33% chance of finding the very best bargain, and a very high chance of finding an extremely good bargain.
"If we are happy to accept a sample in the lowest 10% of prices, we need only look at 14% of the samples on offer before choosing the next one that we see which is at least as cheap as the cheapest of these. This gives us an 84% chance of settling on one among the cheapest 10%.
"If we are happy with a price in the lowest 25%, things get even better. We need only to look at 7% of the samples before choosing one that is at least as cheap as the cheapest we have seen. This gives you a whopping 92% chance of finding a bargain in your chosen range!"
Of course, if it's easy to find additional offers, or if it's fairly easy to get back to a better offer to see if it's still available, you may be able to get more/better/cheaper by spending a bit more time. Once you get the basic approach in mind, however, you'll be able to decide when to stop looking, make your choice, and get back to reading about other examples of how simple rules lead to great complexity.
Fisher's website is filled with additional examples, and his clear joy in reading and writing about science at work in our everyday life.

One of the greatest discoveries of recent times is that the complex patterns we find in life are often produced when all of the individuals in a group follow the same simple rule. This process of "self-organization" reveals itself in the inanimate worlds of crystals and seashells, but as Len Fisher shows, it is also evident in living organisms, from fish to ants to human beings. The coordinated movements of fish in shoals, for example, arise from the simple rule: "Follow the fish in front." Traffic flow arises from simple rules: "Keep your distance" and "Keep to the right."Now, in his new book, Fisher shows how we can manage our complex social lives in an ever more chaotic world. His investigation encompasses topics ranging from "swarm intelligence" to the science of parties and the best ways to start a fad. Finally, Fisher sheds light on the beauty and utility of complexity theory. An entertaining journey into the science of everyday life, The Perfect Swarm will delight anyone who wants to understand the complex situations in which we so often find ourselves.

Web Services: Principles and Technology Review

Web Services: Principles and Technology

This book stands out from the vast array of contemporary SOA and Web services literature in many ways:
1) It presents business context and technical requirements for Web services design on an adequate level of detail.
2) It provides important historical insight without putting the reader to sleep.
3) It covers relevant related work such as e-business, EAI, and networking as needed, unlike most other Web services books.
4) It separates abstract concepts such as messaging from implementation technology such as JMS appropriately, but shows the connections when needed.
5) It builds up a non-trivial example that demonstrates how the various specifications fit together, many unique illustrations help to digest.
6) It has non-trivial exercises that will deepen your understanding.
7) The author's has a hype-free, vendor-neutral writing style and is very experienced in his field.
It always is a good sign if as a reader I want more... so I would also have been interested in the author's view on the ongoing WS-*/SOAP vs. REST debate, and about adoption of the presented concepts and technologies in the industry (tools and project usage); for example, UDDI does not seem to have much traction these days. Maybe something for the Website accompanying the book, which will also have additional material for students and lecturers?
As a practicing IT architect, I have helped many companies to transform their existing applications into Web services-based SOAs. As a book author, I have captured my own experience with the technology in writing. As a researcher, I now investigate many of the architecture design issues the author points out. Still, I find this book to be very educational and informative; I highly recommend it for practitioners, students, and researchers that want to understand the big picture as well as technical rationale and details behind the various concepts and technologies. Those of you that believe some WSDL-to-Java wizards or RESTful POX/HTTP calls are all that is required for successful enterprise development and integration, please do have a look as well - you will begin to appreciate that there is more to the picture!
