I hate to be the person to ruin the perfect score that this book has acquired, but I simply in good conscience cannot give a five star rating due to some flaws in the methods used to teach VB 2005.
In all fairness however, there exists no single programming book that will be able to suit every individual, at least in my opinion. For some this book could easily be 5 stars, for others much less. I think that much of this is based on the reader's perspective, experience, preferred learning style, and goals.
First the good; the book is very well written. The style that the author uses is clear and concise. The book is an easy read in the sense that it doesn't feel like you're reading a textbook, or rather, a lab report on some obscure organic chemistry finding from 1970. Instead of throwing numbers, statistics, or tables requiring massive amounts of raw memorization, the book allows the reader to jump around and reference the parts that are relevant to their "here and now" issues. The book can be read straight through, or used as a reference, and in either case the introduction and application of the .net backbone is well advocated and mostly easy to understand.
Furthermore, the code examples work and provide for very good, usable programs that the user could build upon should they desire. Rather than just providing for simple programs that are useless, the book demonstrates viable, functional programs which is something that many programming books fail to do. Also, there is a lot of explanation given as to the relevance of class libraries and dll's, and how they tie into a project.
Unfortunately, there are some critical flaws that many will notice if they take the time to really evaluate the techniques this book uses. To start with, this book is not for beginning programmers that lack experience. The author assumes that the reader already knows quite a bit about VB and more specifically, about .net when providing very brief explanations or examples. If the reader has never touched programming before, this book would be a waste of time, and I find it odd that a dummies book would be allowed to require a non-dummy. Fortunately for me, I have done quite a bit of coding in VB 6.0 so most of the time I was familiar with the references the author would make when he used programming lingo that lacked explanation.
Moving on, the teaching method of this book is a big no-no in my opinion. Rather than explain what every command is doing in a program, the book basically says, "here's how you make a program that does "X"", and then the reader is spoon fed a big block of code, often with only one or two commands or lines within the code explained. Making a person a programmer this does not do, rather just copying code from a book that fails to explain the dynamics behind the code resembles data entry more than coding. Anybody can just copy blocks of code and make a windows program in VB, or any other language for that matter, and most people that teach VB strongly suggest against just spoon-feeding code to people and solving their problems for them.
Coming from VB 6.0, I was mostly interested in getting behind the .net framework and utilizing this added power to create much more serious programs. Unfortunately, little advice is given to the 6.0 programmer, and most of the specific .net commands (especially the new ones in 2005) are not presented in a way that the user can utilize that suits their own style, rather we're given a gigantic line of .net specific code and told, "this does that". Rather than explaining how or why each specific property comes into play to produce a result, we're just given a big line or a big block of code and are supposed to just trust that it helps to perform a function that contributes to the results of the final project. The problem this creates is that many people will be likely to write out code because they just happen to know that it performs a certain function, but they don't know WHY it performs this function, and therefore will lack the ability to create custom code to suit their needs.
If I don't know why a command, command property, or event does what it does, then all I can do is memorize lines of code from other people, and mish mash them together to make my own programs.
In any case, this book is probably better suited to the individual that is taking VB 2005 classes and needs another perspective, another reference to aid them. As a standalone product however, I feel that it is lacking somewhat. On the other hand, if you're not receiving any instruction, want an easy read, and have no problem with being spoon-fed code just to see its end result, then look no further.

I am an experienced developer so I only expected to skim over the book to get familiar with any of the new asp.net 3.5 features. I found myself reading every word of every page because the book was actually "entertaining". The writing is very smooth and easy to understand. You feel as if a really good teacher who knows how to relate to people is talking to you.
I was also surprised how deep the book was able to go into each subject. For example Linq is a very complicated subject yet the book does contain enough examples for you to use it in the real world.

Visual Basic 2008 For Dummies Review

While a decent Dummies book in essence, the problem lies in it's target. The main focus on the book is VB 2008 Professional Edition. I find it hard to think of a common situation where a user would have full access to VB'08 PE, a $650 package at least, and be on a "dummies" level. For a user to have a need of this book, they would normally be on an entry level. Most entry level user's would be using VB'08 Express. There are a lot of features he highlights that are not available in this edition. This makes this book of little use for a lot of the "dummies" demographic.
It does have a lot of useful information in it. With some trial and error and copious use of the Help files, you can adapt this book to the VB Express edition. I have to give it 2 stars for that. I wish I had found another resource instead to waste my money on.

Very thorough book, and at 1600+ pages, it ought to be. That being said, there are some weaknesses. I have read parts of the book, and then later when trying to retrieve same information, could not find it in the index. This was frustrating having to re-read entire chapters until I found what I was looking for.
Also, there is no background information on OO techniques. While technically not the purpose of the book, it would be nice to know how pages can be inherited from one another and how that technique differs from, say, using Master Pages.
Another thing the book did NOT have that I was hoping it would is detailed information on how to programmatically add controls to an ASP.Net web page. Nothing in the book at all.
Last but not least, the book claims to explain ASP.Net in VB 2008 yet some of the examples are clearly C# syntax. This is a typo for sure, but frankly an unacceptable one in my opinion. If I wanted a C# book, I would have purchased one.

As an Open source enthusiast, I never thought I would look back and grab a ASP.NET book or at least be interested in one, but recently a friend of mine asked me to help him to set up a Share Point server so I had to look for all the information available in internet, sooner than later, I asked him if he wanted a different approach to his needs, meaning I could help him out putting together some Open source solutions, but nope, he did stick to his guns.
So I had to tell him that if he wanted my help he would have to buy me some books: Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 and / or Beginning ASP.NET 4 in VB 2010, anyway, he ended buying me both and it's been kind of hard to drop them, specially the second.
I titled this review "A bearer of good news" for a reason: Matthew MacDonald delivers an excellent and thorough compilation of the basics and middle level of the ASP.NET language leaving almost no space covered (he would have to write another volume for that matter) and the good news are that there's another world besides the Open source(d) one, it has improved to the point of (at least) changing some people's mind about it.
There are plenty of topics that I enjoyed reading this book but the ones that I found to be really useful are: Security and Caching, I know, we'll never know for sure if there's some hacker out there who already has the code and knowledge to break the first and I also know we'll never have applications that are fast enough, but I'm obliged to say that if we follow Matthew MacDonald's advice and handy examples, we'll be set to go.
And just to assist my comments, if you have the chance to see the performance of a Liferay portal (Open source under LGPL) against a Share Point's (Microsoft), you'll see what I mean.

I was looking for a solid, comprehensive, yet approachable ASP.NET 2.0 book for a long time when I stumbled across Pro ASP.NET 2.0. I flipped through it and quickly realized that it is both the learning and reference tool I was wanting. Since getting the book, I have not swayed from that position. This book is a great way to get started and to keep going in your ASP.NET development efforts.
Although large (it weighs in at over 1200 pages), it is well organized and easily accessible. The material builds on itself in such a way that you don't need to read the first 900 pages to effectively use the later chapters. Additionally, the content is organized in a practical approach so you can get started relatively quickly. I find this technique helpful in that it I have more information when it comes time to answer specific questions. I never found myself "wishing" I know more in order to understand a concept.
On the down-side, there are some glaring typographical errors throughout the text. It is pretty obvious in some places that there is a copy/paste error from the C# version to the VB version. None of the errata detracts from the book for me. In fact, in some cases, the little research I did to clarify something actually helped.
All told, I have and continue to highly recommend this book to colleagues and clients alike. It is both an excellent learning tool and a great reference. The fact that one person wrote the entire text and in two programming languages amazes me. The author has an easy writing style that promotes absorbing the information quickly. I anticipate this book becoming tattered quite quickly!

ASP.NET 2.0 is the latest version of Microsoft's current ASP.NET 1.1 technology, which is fast becoming the accepted technology standard for creating dynamic web pages on the Windows platform. It is now used across the board from start-ups to blue-chip multi-national corporations. ASP.NET 2.0 is building on this solid foundation and adding new improvements. The new technology will be faster to code, offer a more powerful set of tools (for example MasterPages and Generics) and will also run quicker when deployed, so that customers enjoy a significantly better user experience.Pro ASP.NET 2.0 in VB.NET is a book that understands this. Following on from Apress' well regarded Pro ASP.NET 1.1 title, this is a fresh book rooted in the best-practices and pragmatic style of its predecessor. The author clearly explains how ASP.NET 2.0 works for the professional programmer - covering both the brand new innovations and those features that have been carried over from the previous version. Knowing that while new features are important, it is how you use the technology as a cohesive whole that really matters, Laurence Moroney and Matthew MacDonald adopt a broad-based approach explaining how all the features - both old and new - interrelate. This gives readers the solid understanding they need to code real applications.

So you want develop ASP.NET web sites? Then you'll get a really good start with this book, whether you're new to ASP.NET or you have worked with an earlier version. Like so many books, the first part goes through some very basic stuff, like using Visual Studio, but it's easy to skip that part if you don't need it; after all it's just the first 100 pages out of a total of more than 1600 pages packed with information. The table of contents is 25 pages long, so you can imagine how many topics are covered in this book. If you have worked with ASP.NET before, you may like that some chapters contains a "Changed in ASP.NET 4" section that highlights changes to earlier versions of ASP.NET.
The book is very well written and there is a good flow in the topics. Even though there is some basic stuff in the book, you need to have some programming skills and knowledge of VB.NET and the .NET Framework before you dig into this. Most, if not all, areas of ASP.NET 4 are covered and you'll also find that a lot of other topics like ADO.NET, LINQ, and XML etc. are covered as well. The book is divided in five parts and I am delighted to find that a whole part is dedicated to securing you web site with the ASP.NET security model and topics like Authentication, Authorization, Roles and Cryptography. With the Internet today you can hardly imagine publishing a web site without being worried about its security.
The book is also an excellent reference that you'll probably keep returning to; at least I know I will. I recommend this book to both beginner and experienced ASP.NET developers.

Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in VB 2008: From Novice to Professional, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

THIS BOOK IS A COMPLETE SCAM! It should have been called Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 with VB 2005 (NOT ASP.NET 3.5 with VB 2008). Why? because there is no 3.5/2008 specific content in this book what-so-ever! I could not believe this while i was reading.
He spends a chapter discussing the VB language and syntax, non of which contain the new language features or changes in the VB language, all examples will work in VB 2005 without issue. In fact, there is not even a mention of LINQ, which is the most important part of the new VB 2008 (VB9) language. In fact, he goes further by giving us chapters and chapters on accessing data using outdated data access methods and SQL statements, non of which is necesssary anymore thanks to LINQ (WHICH HE MENTIONS NOTHING ABOUT).
It talks about the old, outdated controls of ASP.NET 2.0 which are no longer used or necessary due to the newer and much better controls available in asp.net 3.5 (in which he mentions NOTHING about).
I still can't believe apress would allow something like this to go through. This really is a book about ASP.NET 2.0 and VB 2005 ONLY. There really is nothing (NOTHING, not even one bit) of anything related to exclusive ASP.NET 3.5 or VB 2008 features and content!!!!
What a damn disappointment, when you are reading a book and realize you've practically read the exact same book 3 years ago and there is nothing new in it!
Thankfully I didn't buy it and downloaded a copy off the internet to review it before buying it.
THIS IS A COMPLETE SCAM, DO NOT BUY IT.
