(More customer reviews)Kevin Roebuck's book contains a great deal of current information about sentiment analysis. A good thing, one would think, for those wanting to learn about this topic.
Not so much, if you are familiar with the Wikipedia web site. This book contains one hundred sixteen articles from Wikipedia on various topics related to sentiment analysis and text analysis generally. There is some very good information here. And all of it is available for free on the Wikipedia web site. This book's static capture of the web site will gradually drift out of date, but the site itself will live on, continually updated with the latest information. It will be there for anyone with web access.
Don't buy this book. Use the web site instead. In fact, don't buy any of the books in the High Impact Strategies series--just use Wikipedia online. I am sure that the author has worked out all of the copyright and permission issues to make this book legal. But it still seems shady to charge readers a hefty amount for a Kindle book built from free information. Granted, the author has done the work of identifying which Wikipedia articles are related to sentiment analysis. If he wanted a buck or two for that, I'd give it without squawking. But he asks a bit more.
A further recommendation: If you are interested in sentiment analysis, download the Kindle free sample for this book. Its table of contents is the list of Wikipedia articles the book contains. Use this list as a guide to Wikipedia's sentiment analysis information online. If you like, send a suitable donation DIRECTLY to Wikipedia. It's a worthy effort.

Arguing A.I.: The Battle for Twenty-first-Century Science Review

(More customer reviews)Is research and thinking on artificial intelligence stuck in a local minimum? Those in the field have attested to major advances in the last decade, but are these advances merely a renaming of approaches that were taken decades ago?
This book does not address these questions as its major goal, but instead attempts to give a broad overview of how A.I. got started and where it is now, and where it might be going. The reader is lead to ask the questions above though after reading the book, for the author seems to ask them implicitly. Its validity as a science are questioned, and the future of A.I. is addressed in detail. The author though is fair in his representation of both sides of the A.I. debate.
After a short introduction and a brief "A.I. debate timeline", the author begins chapter 1 with what could be considered to be the mathematical origins of the subject, due to the mathematicians David Hilbert and Alan Turing. Hilbert was essentially the originator of the formalist school of mathematics and proof theory, but his ideas were countered by Turing, and the mathematicians Kurt Godel and Alzono Church. These counterarguments are taken to be final by the author, and he follows the lead of many others in asserting this. But the "unprovability" results of Godel do not show up in the normal practice of mathematical research though, with the self-referential statements having to be artificially constructed. There are no examples in the everyday practice of mathematical research where these kinds of statements arise when engaging in the activity of making definitions and proving theorems. Empirically and practically speaking therefore, the Godel counter to the Hilbert formalism is weak. As far as any negative ramifications to A.I. are concerned, the author does mention the assertion of Douglas Hofstadter that Godel self-referential statements would be a (positive) sign of machine intelligence and self-awareness.
The next chapter discusses the A.I. contributions of the LISP pioneer John McCarthy. A brief biography is given of McCarthy and how he got started in A.I. This chapter gives much insight into the "giddy" optimisim that surrounded the A.I. community in the 1950's, an optimism that has grown beyond all bounds at the present time. McCarthy's time scale for having machine intelligence is on the order of 500 years, but, as the author reports him saying: "The breakthrough could come this or next year." In addition, and I think correctly, McCarthy believes that computational power is not enough for advances in A.I., but some new ideas. When viewing the status of A.I. research, with fairness one could say that it is trapped in a local minimum, and some radically new ideas are needed to force it out of equilibrium. Computational power will certainly help in testing out these new ideas of course.
In chapter 3, the author overviews the contributions and attitudes of Ray Kurzweil to A.I. Called the "optimist" by the author, and this is indeed an understatement. Kurzweil predicts the onset of thinking machines way beyond the capabilities of human intelligence by the year 2030. His contributions to A.I. and his technological ingenuity justify though this optimism. His attitude that computational power is the sole issue is not really justified, at least from current levels of knowledge. But increased computer performance may result in more innovative ideas to be developed, resulting in a kind of self-fulfilled prophecy for the rise of intelligent machines by the year predicted.
Chapter 4 discusses an idea that you don't hear much about anymore: virtual reality. The author overviews the work of Jaron Lanier, the leading innovator of virtual reality software. Critical of the claims of A.I. researchers, Lanier has much to say about the future of both A.I. and software development. As reported by the author, his motivation for developing virtual reality is very intriguing, as he wanted to build an interactive computer-graphics program that would give mathematicians the power to express their ideas in graphical form. Software development though, according to Lanier, has taken a turn for the worse, with bug-ridden progams the norm rather than the exception, all written, he says, to take advantage of increasing microprocessor speeds. The future in 2030 is one where software maintenance is the predominant activity, according to Lanier. Lanier though omits the fact that software engineering is one of the main applications of A.I. at present, and shows every sign of increasing. Intelligent debugging, intelligent software maintenance, and even intelligent software development are acting as testing grounds and financial justification for A.I.
In chapter 5, the (pessimistic) ideas of Bill Joy are discussed by the author. Joy is clearly very concerned that the future may result in a terrifying one for all of humanity, if indeed A.I. is realized to the point of autonomous, thinking machines. He believes that A.I. will reach such a status, but he is not optimistic as to its consequences. It is interesting to compare his ideas on software development with those of Lanier. Joy, as reported by the author, believes that it will not be like anything we currently understand. In addition, strong A.I., or a conscious thinking machine, does not have to be realized in order for it to be dangerous, Joy argues.
The last chapter, entitled "Fact Versus Fiction" is an attempt by the author to wrap things up and assess just where we all are in A.I. research. As in most books of this kind, the arch-villan HAL of 2001: A Space Odyssey makes its appearance. HAL has turned into a sort of benchmark for A.I., in both popular and professional circles. And, interestingly, the movie "A.I." is mentioned also, it being held as an example of the current thinking in many A.I. circles that a machine must interact with the environment in order for it to become intelligent.
But more A.I. is coming....

Towards the Future Internet: A European Research Perspective Review

(More customer reviews)Given that the Web was born at CERN in Europe some 20 years ago, this book is of interest in showing a European-wide effort to research future directions of the Internet. Alas, most of the papers only describe initial stages in test deployments or modellings. There is no single gripping idea that leaps from the pages that is as compelling as the browser and http that started the Web.
This may be because the low hanging fruit of the Web 1.0 has been harvested, and the peerings into the future will require much harder technical effort.
One proposed idea is the integrating of widespread sensor networks into the Internet. With a concomitant need for machine-to-machine interactions. It is suggested that the traffic for this may well dominate various other human mediated interactions on the Internet. There is also a need for sensor vendor independent specifications (ie. interfaces), to allow for easy downstream applications to use the sensor data. Perhaps existing work on MANETs may head in this direction?
Another paper gives a useful analysis of some current p2p networks - that use the tree or mesh models to distribute their data.
Several papers do seem to drown under a mass of acronymic jargon; perhaps inevitable in any field.

The type is small, and there is little white space and no sidebars to break up the text. Chamberlain rarely repeats himself, and there are no lighthearted quips and few anecdotes. None of these are major criticisms, but it does make for a fairly heavy read. (More customer reviews)I`ve owned Apple computers now since 2000, theres no turning back. However, like most first users I was surprised that there was no manual when I purchased my G4 in 2000. So I went out and got the Missing Manuals, the Macs for Dummies and so on. These books are all great. When I got the G5 with the new OS X, I was drooling. This machine was beauty and with the little knowledge I did acquire from my wanderings on my G4, I realized the G5 was even easier to use and so intuitive that I really did not feel the need to get a manual but I did anyway because I knew there were things I was simply unaware of and that I could take this G5 further into my creative endeavors.
Anyway, there are many excellent books out there to get but I try not to stick with one publisher or writer because everyone has their own style and ideas and I try to get as many as possible, not only that but I just feel every book has their own strengths so I seriously sit down and thumb though key sections for me at the book store before purchasing. With the said, I found this book to be the most helpful of the bunch and the easist to read. There are other books that are more colorful but this book gives me the info I need without all the photos and hoopla.
I should add that even though the book can get technical, if you`re into that sort of thing, it also helped me to set up my printer which should be an easy thing to do but this time I was having trouble with my HP. After thumbing through the book, I found what I was looking for and was printing seconds later. So this book can help with the most simple to the most technical aspects of working with your OS.

(More customer reviews)This is a pared-down reprint of _A Guide to Library Service in Mathematics_, which is still available. That book was a guide to math librarianship plus an annotated bibliography of materials. The annotations are merely "This is a book about...", helpful before the Internet, but now completely worthless. If you want to find a good book, you would now browse the reviews on Amazon. The only part of the 1993 book that is still worth reading is the advice for librarians, which is just what was cut from this new edition. So, I can't see any justification for the existence of this book. Besides that, the paper, printing, and binding are poor. I suppose the reason why they decided to publish this is to compete with Dekker, which has just come out with _Using the Mathematics Literature_.
